Human-caused climate change increased damaging wind speeds for every hurricane in 2024. That's according to a new study by the Princeton-based Climate Central. From our friends at WHYY's Climate Desk, Susan Phillips explains how higher ocean temperatures led to the higher wind speeds. You may have recently received a letter from your water company about new rules for lead and copper pipes. That letter may ask you to identify your service line, but some consumers are confused about what that means. From our partners at WPSU, Sydney Roach reports these letters are the result of new rules from the US Environmental Protection Agency.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

To slowly enjoy it. This is not a sports drink that you gulp down, this is a decadent Bordeaux that you slowly sip and enjoy. Slow down as you read, relax, enjoy and digest the wisdom in these pages. To do that you may need to make some time in your schedule. Voila - this is Lent - and we encourage you to abstain from something you do regularly for these 40 days and use that time to enjoy this book. New fronts in the fight against climate change

The search for solutions to address climate change is urgent. People want action now, something that will move the needle. But every solution that's on the table has potential unintended consequences or tradeoffs involved. For example, wind power sounds like a great, clean option, but wind farms need space — where should they be located? A plan to construct them in the ocean is upsetting many fishermen and conservationists. Efforts to mine the ocean floor for precious metals needed to make batteries for renewables are scaring marine biologists. And an audacious plan to cool the earth through geo-engineering is making lots of folks very anxious. On this episode, we explore climate solutions, their potential drawbacks, and how we can carefully weigh the risks and benefits. Also heard on this week’s episode: We talk with environmental researcher Forrest Fleischman about why planting trees may not be the climate cure-all we think it is. Fleischman is an associate professor of environment and natural resource policy at the University of Minnesota. How do we cut fossil fuel emissions? One idea from the Biden administration is opening large-scale commercial offshore wind farms. But in New Jersey, Susan Phillips reports the planned wind farms occupy some of the most fertile fishing grounds in the nation, which has sparked a major fight. Erik Cordes, professor and vice chair of biology at Temple University in Philadelphia, joins us to discuss the pivotal — yet often forgotten — role the deep ocean plays in protecting us from some of the worst effects of climate change, along with a new threat facing it: deep sea mining. While countries struggle to cut carbon emissions, some scientists say it's time to study a more controversial, short-term measure — reflecting more sunlight away from the earth to cool the planet. Alan Yu reports. People spend a lot of time and effort fighting invasive plant species and trying to return landscapes to their previous state. Samantha Chapman, professor of biology at Villanova University and co-director of its Center for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Stewardship, joins us to discuss rethinking that approach.

It was a movement born out of the George Floyd protests for racial justice: Hundreds of people who had experienced homelessness camped out on the Ben Franklin Parkway, on Ridge Avenue and squatted in empty houses across Philadelphia to demand affordable housing. Finally, after months of negotiations with the city and federal housing officials, the two sides have come to an agreement that will clear the encampments and provide permanent housing for residents. WHYY’s Susan Phillips explains how this historic deal was struck, and whether it could make a dent in Philadelphia’s affordable housing problem.

How to Stop an Invasion

It feels like we’ve been invaded by an invisible enemy — so scary we don’t even want to go to the grocery store. Inside of hospitals, patients and health care workers are fighting this invasion by wearing layers of protective gear. As a country, we’re dealing with it through social distancing and increased testing … And, it feels a bit like war. All of this got us thinking about the idea of invasion. What happens when you face an outside threat, that’s trying to come in? On this episode, we’ll explore this idea through different lenses. We’ll hear stories about coronavirus invading our bodies. Then, we dig into invasive species, and the pushback against the language we use to describe them. And lastly, we get to invasion on a personal level — inside of our minds, and our homes. Also heard on this week’s episode: Climate change has already started pushing wildlife into new territories — leading to widespread concern over the threat posed by “invasive species.” Susan Phillips reports on how some scientists are rethinking this threat, including whether we should consider it a threat at all. Last year Alex Wolfe and his girlfriend made a big decision: They were finally moving in together. Things were going smooth at first, until they realized they were not alone. Are security cameras making us safer at home — or just more paranoid? Reporter Grant Hill tells the story of how a prank planted a seed of suspicion in his family’s home, and talks with psychologist Pamela Rutledge about why and what we’re hardwired to fear. Microbiologist Carolina Lopez offers a primer on our immune systems’ amazing ability to defend against attacks. She also explains all the ways our bodies are — and aren’t — prepared to fight off coronavirus. Can you stop a virus from invading? We talk with Ashish Jha, director of the Harvard Global Health Institute, about what we can do better to halt the spread of the coronavirus in our communities. Disease outbreaks can make people suspicious of others or more likely to cast blame. Public health historian Michael Yudell walks us through some past examples of when racism, discrimination, and fear bubbled up to the surface during times of crisis.
