Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis

This week, we welcome back Dave Fleischman, a trail maintainer and a newly minted Triple Crowner. Dave already had the PCT and the AT under his belt, after hikes back in the 90s. Suddenly, the opportunity arose to do the CDT, so he headed back out. On this Thanksgiving Day, it is worth being grateful for so many things, yet Dave personifies the selfless nature of trail maintainers, so let's thank him for that. In our conversation, Dave refers to the Triple Crown ALDHA ceremony out west. Check it out at this link. Triple Crown | ALDHA-West Our new book reading, Happy Hiking, by my friend, Emily Leonard is–of course–written from a woman's POV and a woman's voice. I hope you enjoy listening to my reading of it. If you'd like to buy the book, you can find it on Amazon at Happy Hiking: Falling in love on the Appalachian Trail, or on Emily's website, at Happy Hiking. I used my recent hike in the UK on the South West Coast Path to help raise money for my absolute favorite charity, Parenting Matters, on whose board I've been privileged to serve for over a decade. You can learn more about the hike and the organization–and donate–by visiting Hike with Steve - Empowering Parents, One Step at a Time | Parenting Matters %. I hope you want to support this critical mission. Don't forget. Our entire series of videos from our Woods Hole Weekend in 2022 is now FREE and available at my YouTube page at Woods Hole Weekend - Trailer There, you'll find all sorts of tips and tricks that our guests took away from the weekend that helped them with their own hikes this year. Check it out. I often ask listeners for ideas on who to interview, and I'm sure several of you say, “I could do that. I've got an awesome story to tell.” You're the person we need to hear from. If you'd like to be interviewed on the podcast, just register as a guest on the link below, and I'll be in touch. Come on the show! If you like what we're doing on the Hiking Radio Network, and want to see our shows continue, please consider supporting us with either a one-off or monthly donation. You'll find the donate button on each Hiking Radio Network page at Hiking Radio Network . If you prefer NOT to use PayPal, you can now support us via check by mailing it to Mighty Blue Publishing, PO Box 6161, Sun City Center, FL 35751. Any support is gratefully received. If you'd like to take advantage of my book offer (all three of my printed hiking books–with a personal message and signed by me–for $31, including postage to the United States) send a check payable to Mighty Blue Publishing at the address just above.

Modern Family: B2B Marketing Lessons from the Emmy Award-Winning Show with CMO of Altimetrik, Jeff Fleischman

Remarkable Marketing

“A rare thing.” That's what co-creator Steve Levitan called “the incredible alchemy of elements coming together” that was Modern Family. He and Christopher Lloyd, who he'd worked with on Frasier, wanted to create a show that felt real. A show with heart. And it took the right writers, characters, and actors to play them to make it happen. And it happened for 11 years, winning 22 Emmys. And in this episode, we're taking B2B marketing lessons from it with the help of our special guest, CMO at Altimetrik, Jeff Fleischman.Together, we talk about being passionate about your brand, showing persistence and grit, and the art of making “a rare thing.” About our guest, Jeff FleischmanJeffrey Fleischman is a seasoned senior executive with over 35 years of experience spanning the financial services, banking, insurance, and technology. As CMO of Altimetrik he manages the company's brand, marketing, lead generation, public relations, and communications functions. Jeff brings a wealth of expertise to the role. Previously, he served as Chief Marketing & Digital Officer at Penn Mutual, driving omni-channel campaigns and advancing digital initiatives. His leadership journey includes key roles at renowned companies such as Citi, American Express, TIAA-CREF, and Chase.Jeff's passion lies in creating innovative, customer-focused strategies and experiences that integrate data, technology, and design. His extensive expertise covers areas like omni-channel marketing, data analytics, product management, and business transformation. He holds a B.S. in finance from Syracuse University and an MBA in finance, investments, and banking from Hofstra University. He has or held board positions with Artemis, Zenmonics Inc., Hornor, Townsend & Kent, Telera, and IEP Youth Services.Jeff is an author, advisor, investor, and speaker. His book, "Advice To My Younger Self," reflects his commitment to empowering others to achieve their aspirations.Beyond his professional achievements, he expresses creativity through painting and crafting unique art pieces, breathing new life into old furniture, and has a passion for music. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Modern Family:Be passionate about your brand. Jeff says, “On the passionate and competitive side, Jay Pritchett's archenemy was Earl, his former partner of Closets, Closet, Closets. And they were at odds with each other, trying to outdo each other, trying to out-innovate each other. It's that competitiveness and that passion that you need as a marketer. That passion really does have to come through.”Show persistence and grit. A lot of marketing is about trial and error. You find out what works with your audience by keeping things fresh and building your momentum. So don't let the things that don't work slow you down; just keep going. Jeff says, “Both Jay and Phil shared that kind of grit to be the best of what they can be, to beat everyone else out, whether it be another realtor, whether it be Earl from Closets, Closets, Closets. And as marketers, it's a very noisy world out there. Everyone's pushing content out. Everyone's trying to be everything to all customers. So how do you stand out? Not everything's going to be a home run. Not every piece of content, every blog, every white paper is going to resonate. But you need to just stick to your focus on how you take your brand and elevate it. And you don't stop trying. And if it works, great. If not, move on to the next one.”Focus on the heart of your content. Work on the emotion you want your audience to feel when they experience your content. That's how you know your message will hit home and stick. And then you can start to chop it up for use across channels. Ian says, “So often in B2B marketing, we get so caught up in trying to create the asset and then chop it up and do all these things that you're trying to do all the motions of the thing rather than the actual sentiment that is in the clip.”Quotes*”You need to create opportunities for your community and your audience to talk about you to other people. They're not just sitting around all day thinking of your software. The number of people who are just thrilled with [your product] are not just going to sing it from the rooftops every second of every day. You need to cultivate those things and allow them to share it as much as you can.”*”For marketers, tie what you're doing back to the company strategy. And if you do that, you don't have to push people. They're going to be pushing you to do more, and want more from you. If you don't know numbers, you don't know how to measure, you don't know ROI, it's a serious blind spot. Bring back what you're doing to numbers, bring back to ROI, talk like a CFO.”*”Take a bite-sized approach. We never start off with a big bang. Our approach is tiny. Let's do a proof of concept. Let's get a quick win. We won't disrupt your customers. We won't disrupt your business. It's within your environment. And I can tell you, 99 percent of everything we started out with was a small project. And now we have extremely large engagements. They trust us, they know us, and those relationships grew over time.”*”You're basically in a newspaper business. You have to invest in content, it's 24/7, it never ends. If you think putting a PDF up on a website or, you know, putting new colors onto your website is the idea of content, you know, it's a big miss. So, content is an investment, it's an asset, and it's very dynamic. You have to put the right content at the right place at the right time on the right, you know, device or environment. And it just never stops. Technology's gotten better, data's gotten better, AI is now in the mix. So as you think about B2B marketing and where you really can make a difference, it's taking content that gets noticed. And, you know, the more you do that, the more you'll get noticed.”Time Stamps[0:55] Meet Jeff Fleischman, CMO of Altimetrik[5:41] Learn about Jeff's Role at Altimetrik[7:43] About the Creation and Success of Modern Family[10:59] Casting Challenges and Character Development[15:17] Marketing Takeaways from Modern Family[27:48] What Marketers Can Learn from Jay Pritchett's Competitive Spirit[29:12] Grit and Persistence in Marketing[33:48] How to Build a Strong Social Media Presence[34:49] The Role of Earned Media[46:14] AI in Marketing: A Game Changer[52:02] Jeff's Advice for First-Time CMOsLinksConnect with Jeff on LinkedInLearn more about AltimetrikAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. Joel Fleischman, though not widely known, profoundly shaped modern philanthropy by professionalizing the field and championing transparency and accountability. His work at Duke University and his book, A Great American Secret foresaw the growing influence of fewer major donors and the need for foundations to be held accountable for their impact. Fleischman's legacy continues to influence how we approach giving and measure the effectiveness of philanthropic efforts today.

Shelly, known for her captivating encaustic and mixed media work, takes us through her artistic evolution—from a lover of poetry and a private creator to a celebrated artist. Listen in as Shelly shares the transformative power of a supportive community and a life-changing residency that ignited her creative spark.Ever wondered how artists balance creativity with the demands of daily life? We unpack the concept of "otium" and its essential role in the artistic process. I share personal routines that fuel my creative energy, from morning walks in pajamas to watching birds and sun salutations. The conversation highlights the often overlooked challenges faced by artists, such as finding a supportive community and the dichotomy between artistic fulfillment and conventional job expectations. We dig deep into how "odium," the luxury of doing nothing, is a crucial part of letting ideas simmer and eventually flourish.Navigating the art world is no easy feat, and we explore the unique challenges and triumphs of being a professional artist. From the vulnerability of sharing art to balancing creativity with business, we discuss the pressures of maintaining a social media presence and the mental exhaustion that can come with it. I share personal anecdotes about the importance of taking breaks and finding inspiration in nature to combat creative blocks. We also delve into the joy of celebrating wins, not just by achieving personal milestones, but by supporting fellow artists and building a personal art collection. In this episode we are joined by Forrest Fleischman from the University of Minnesota and the project principal investigator, Maria Ehrnstöm-Fuentes from Hanken School of Economics.  Forrest gives us insight into the work he has done in the Indian context in relation to tree planting and the long-term outcomes of tree planting schemes. India has had a long history of tree planting programs, but are they always successful? In the western Himalaya, where Forrest is working about half the planting takes place in areas where trees are already growing and about half takes place in areas where trees are not currently growing and most probably will not successfully grow due to environmental or land use reasons. There is sometimes a disconnect between what the government programs want to accomplish (or what looks good on paper) and the experience on the ground of the best land use—both geographically and for the community living in place. One key in indicator of success is the inclusion of the community and getting their buy-in and participation in the tree planting program. However, more research is needed to figure out how to generate that local participation and where it roots from.  Forrest gives us insight into the mythology of the modern concept that trees everywhere are a good thing. As more people are divorced from earning their living from the land this concept become more and more common. However, this lionization of the forest landscapes devalues the natural and vital landscapes that naturally do not have trees or have only scattered trees. These landscapes are currently being destroyed in support of tree planting to match this prominent environmental narrative.  Resources mentioned in the episode: Veldman, J.W. et al., Tyranny of trees in grassy biomes. Through her private practice, Bliss Counseling, and a unique movement system she developed called Dance Your Bliss, Rachel works with individuals and couples and has expertise in crisis management, trust, body image, premarital and marital issues, sex therapy, depression, anxiety, life transition, and panic disorder, to name a few. Rachel's love for supporting others began at a young age in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she grew up experiencing complex trauma and learned about resilience and self-reliance as she raised herself. She found reprieve through dance classes and put herself through college and graduate school, where she also taught aerobics (which she thoroughly enjoyed). At the age of 24, Rachel took care of her dying father by teaching him exercises, which sparked the ideas surrounding the Dance Your Bliss classes and programs that she would later go on to develop. “As a young person, I often found myself being called upon to help others who were having difficulty coping with life situations. I had this ability to really “get” them and wanted desperately to learn more about how we process emotions, deal with adversity, and thrive,” says Fleischman. “During my 23 years practicing, I've trained with Esther Perel, the Gottmans and many other clinicians. I have studied Couples Counseling, sex therapy, CBT, and Solution-Focused Therapy. I refuse to stop learning – my clients mean the world to me!” Fleischman is currently developing new e-books and coursework surrounding perimenopause and menopause, and working with individual clients. It wasn't long ago that the notion of the mind-body connection was considered New Agey. It was as if the mind and the body were two totally separate systems that had very little to do with each other. Now, with contributions from scientific research, wisdom-based traditions, and modern psychotherapy, the mind-body connection isn't even questioned. Still, there's a lot to learn about how our bodies and minds connect and I'm so glad I got to have this conversation with psychotherapist and dance instructor, Rachel Fleischman (https://www.blisscounseling.com/). Rachel is a seasoned therapist who does both traditional individual and couple therapy but who also integrates talk therapy with movement. As you will hear, she is wise, fun, and extremely skilled in pulling her information from various sources that contribute to her knowledge base. If you're a fan of movement and want to learn more about how it can be a component of psychological healing, this episode is for you! So, listen in as Rachel and I geek out to the psychotherapy and movement.

Most famously, he was brought in to be Journey's lead singer as work started on the “Infinity” album. He was only in the band for five months, before he was replaced by Steve Perry, but he left an indelible mark on the band, co-writing songs like ‘Wheel in the Sky” and “Anytime.”   Robert also was the frontman for the Vinnie Vincent Invasion in the 80s, after Vincent left KISS.   And in the early days, Robert was in talks to join bands like (no kidding) ASIA and Genesis.   These days, Robert is an accomplished artist with regular gallery shows. He's also readying his first music release in a long time: “Emotional Atlas.”   We cover it all in this episode, fueled by the amazing food of Bistro Monadnock (325 S. Federal). Their menu is fantastic, and the restaurant's vibe is perfect for after work food and drink, date night or dining out with a group of friends.   Robert and I both went with the Bistro Burger (brioche, steak, butter, dijonnaise, red onion relish, gruyere, vargo bros pickle). It was absolutely perfect.

On this episode of Unsupervised Learning Razib talks to Aporia Magazine's Diana Fleischman, an evolutionary psychologist who earned her Ph.D. in David Buss' lab at the University of Texas in Austin. Fleischman discusses the origins of her field, its methodological framework and presuppositions, and why evolutionary psychologists seem obsessed with sex. Razib also brings up the relationship of evolutionary psychology to primatology and the role that behavioral studies of common chimpanzees and bonobos play in understanding what Jared Diamond termed the “third chimpanzee,” humans. They then circle back to the importance of the reality of heritable “hard-wired” behaviors in evolutionary psychology, and its relationship to behavior genetics. Fleischman and Razib then move on to eugenics and the controversy that ensued after Fleischman's piece You're probably a eugenicist. They wonder how narrowly to constrain the term; for example, is the ubiquitous termination of fetuses with Down Syndrome eugenic if those individuals brought to term cannot themselves reproduce? Is selection for intelligence and height in your marriage partner eugenical? Razib and Fleischman also talk about the eugenical impact of abortion, including the decline of crime, and why the Left does not talk extensively about this topic. Fleischman discusses eugenics' future with the rise of reproductive technology and a more detailed understanding of complex trait architecture. The possibility of embryo selection's rise brings up concrete concerns and resurrects the specter of bottom-up eugenics, despite the abolishment and banning of top-down eugenics. Fleischman and her co-authors tackle ‌‌embryo selection for complex traits in a recent piece in Aporia.

On this week's episode of London Calling, Toby and James start by talking about James' health (he has a cold), then segue into discussing what James says is the best hunting experience of his life. Toby then tells James about his week (hangover and all), which included appearing on Jacob Rees-Mogg's debut show on GBNews and attending the third anniversary party of the Free Speech Union. They then get on to the past week's big story - the Lockdown Files - the more than 100,000 WhatsApp messages belonging to former Health Secretary Matt Hancock that were leaked to the Telegraph by the journalist Isabel Oakeshott. It inevitably leads to a heated argument about whether they prove Toby right that the past three years have just been one almighty cock-up, or corroborate James' suspicions that the lockdowns and the vaccine rollout are part of some diabolical conspiracy. In Culture Corner, they discuss the season 3 opener of The Mandalorian (Disney+), Drive to Survive, Fleischman is in Trouble (Disney+ in the UK, Hulu in the US) and The Playlist (Netflix) which James highly recommends.
