In this episode, I'm going to tell some more of my truths… everything in his life is a choice and we all have free will to choose the path we want to go down.. please don't judge me, but if you do, you're only judging yourself!
When you finally decide to own your truth, it means that you are tired of living a lie, tired of not saying what needs to be said, or doing what needs to be done. You are tired of the day-to-day BS. Three things will happen once you start living this way. People will think something is wrong with you, they will distance themselves from you, and then they will start thinking about you. -Where do we begin with getting real, honest, and real honest about our pasts? -What gets in the way of being honest about the roots of our codependency (and how does that keep us codependent)? -When, why, and how can we start to tell our truth, even if it involves others like our parents? In this episode, I have the honor and privilege to sit down with Paul Gilmartin, Host of Mental Illness Happy Hour podcast. Paul shares about his codependency and what that has looked like for him before and after he joined 12-step recovery programs. You'll also hear how Paul cultivated the courage to talk openly about his past, including his relationship with his mother, despite having a codependent relationship with her. How does a codependent tell their truth if and when it involves being hurt by those they are most codependent with? Tune in to hear Paul's journey to telling his truth. Thanks for listening! About Paul: -Paul Gilmartin is the Host of the Mental Illness Happy Hour podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/mental-illness-happy-hour/id427377900 -He has amazing surveys for listeners to fill out anonymously. They may help you tell your truth! Go here to check out different survey topics: https://mentalpod.com/ -Here's the episode where Paul interviewed me on codependency this past summer: https://podcasts.apple.com/no/podcast/543-codependency-marissa-esquibel/id427377900?i=1000525031453 Helpful links: www.codependummy.com/toolsforhealing www.codependummy.com/challenge www.codependummy.com Want to come on the show: email marissa@codependummy.com More deets on the episode: We start with hearing about Paul's definition of codependency and he shares about his codependent experiences. Paul talks about ways he was codependent with his mother and how, due to his father's alcoholism, he felt like he had to play the role as her emotional support. Paul discusses what codependency in his life looked like before and after he started attending 12-step meetings and support groups. He shares about the empathy, support, and encouragement he received in his meetings as well as from therapy which helped him share honestly about the antecedents to his mental health struggles. I then ask Paul about how he was able to share openly on his podcast about his past, particularly his relationship with his mother. Paul reveals how it was the culmination of therapy, support groups, finding supportive friends, having guests on talking about their pasts, reading listeners stories about what they had been through, and other factors related to his healing that led him to open up about his past. How did he start to talk so openly about his mom? As you hear, there is no easy formula. It's messy. “And it's not about demonizing people. I just have to share my truth.” You'll hear about my own realizations about what I have had to share thanks to all our guests and listeners talking about the connections between our childhood, family, and past trauma with the development of codependency in adulthood. We conclude with Paul sharing about one of his favorite coping skills: LAYING DOWN. What coping skill are you already utilizing that works? No, you may not read about it on some “Top 10 Coping Skills” list–but if it's working for you, I encourage you to keep doing it and do it more often if possible! Questions for you: What comes up when you think about ways your mom and dad contributed to your codependent behaviors? Do you blame your parents for your codependency? Do you see how their actions contributed to your codependency developing? Or do you sense they did the best they could and it's up to you to heal from codependency? If you had a platform like this podcast, would you talk openly about your relationship with your parents & family or not? If so, how come? If not, why not? Where do you sense you are in your journey in talking openly with others about what you have been through? What have you been met with in response by others when you have spoken honestly? I'm delighted to welcome Dr Anita Heiss to Sparta Chicks Radio this week Anita is a proud member of the Wiradjuri Nation of central New South Wales and one of Australia's most prolific and well-known authors. She has written 18 books including her latest novel, an epic tale called Bila Yarrudhanggalangdhuray (or River of Dreams). It's also the first time in Australia a commercially published book has used a First Nations language for the title. Anita enjoys eating chocolate, running and being a 'creative disruptor'. Initially, I wanted to talk to Anita to explore her running career and how she uses running as a tool to support herself and her work. Yet the more research I did, the more I realised I wanted to speak to her about: - awareness, history and truth-telling, - the importance of getting comfortable with being uncomfortable and - the power of using your voice, sharing your story and telling your truth. Here is your Monday Motivation, because it's Monday, somewhere. Welcome to a new segment, not to be confused with the new season of the Dating After Divorce Survival Guide. This week let's take a look at telling the truth. Telling the truth, no matter what the situation, can often be a scary thing when your truth is not in agreement with what someone else wants. But why? Why do we keep our truths from others — others who need to hear it — especially when they stand to lose in the long run from a lie, a half-truth or an omission. This week I share a recent experience of my own when I opted to tell the truth and what I learned. If you like what you're hearing please recommend this podcast to one person who you think will benefit from this message. Did I mention subscribing? This week I was on Ariel Helwani's Podcast, and I talked openly about how I live my life with anxiety, among other things. I can't overemphasize the importance of speaking your truth and being vulnerable. It's not just about recognizing your truth, however. It's about taking that truth and putting in the work: I have anxiety, so how do I make sure it doesn't control my life? Be vulnerable, tell your truth, and get to work.

We all have a store to tell and who better to tell your story than you. But for whatever the reason you may be hesitant to share your truth. What I have found is that once you open and share your truth it empowers others to do the same. Staying silent is what empowers abusers and shields them from having to be confronted with their tragic offenses perpetrated on innocent victims; meanwhile the victims are left broken having to deal with the stain and shame from the traumatic experience. As a kid I was abused by an adult within the NYC Public School system. I thought it was my fault, at the time I had no idea what was appropriate or inappropriate behavior. My parents didn’t talk about the birds and the bees Mets Jets or Sex-so we were left to explore on our own. When I finally did open up as an adult it was thrown back in my face. I can totally understand why Its easier to keep those feeling buried in a box. I literally felt like a knotted in a box. Which is what I called my bow tie company “Knots In A Box” because that’s exactly how I felt. Through the creative process and sharing I started to find relief. I continue to find relief through pursuing my dreams and empowering others to do the same. I never want to get to the place where I feel as though I’ve arrived so I’ll continue to strive and remain teachable. The Black Tux --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/derek-oxley/support

Mitchell Mullins is a visual content creator. In 2018 alone he spent 300 days on the road traveling the world for both client and his own personal work. He has learned to let his work speak for himself and he hopes through it, it helps lead, instill confidence and inspire others to chase their passions every second of everyday. Born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee, his childhood was filled with creativity. He first picked up a camera at the age of 11 to record his brother on a trampoline and never seemed to put it down. After finishing up high school he attended Savannah College of Art and Design with intent to study film. 6 months later, not satisfied with school, he dropped out, bought a flight to California and joined his buddy Jackson Thomas on a road trip. While driving on the freeway in the early morning of April 13, 2017, their 15 passenger van blew out one of its front tire which led to the van swerving and flipping 6 times before landing right side up. Mitchell’s friend Jackson who was driving at the time had to be airlifted to the nearest hospital. Fortunately, they both survived this traumatic accident and so he tattooed the word “alive” with a line through it on his wrist as a mark of gratitude which he is reminded of daily. In this episode Mitchell discusses the importance of letting off the gas pedal & reflecting, the benefits of watching and listening to other people, how to avoid the comparison trap, why fulfillment is a higher version of happiness and why we must tell our truth. - If you enjoy this podcast, please leave us a 1 sentence review on the iTunes Podcast App with your honest feedback OR screenshot this Episode, post it to your Instagram Story tagging @Mitchell_Mullins & @PurposeintheYouth! - Connect with Mitchell! First look inward. Don't be afraid to hold a mirror up to yourself. Don't shoot the messenger. Have the courage to acknowledge the good, the bad, and the ugly within yourself. Make a commitment to change, to move from the darkness to the Light. And then DO IT!
