Higher Ed Now is pleased to launch a new series of student-driven podcast conversations issuing from the College Debates and Discourse (CD&D) Alliance – a national initiative led by ACTA, Braver Angels, and BridgeUSA. ACTA's program manager for the CD&D Alliance, Sadie Webb, will host the series to showcase students across the nation who are leading a movement to promote civil discourse, depolarizing debates, and free expression on college campuses. In July 2023, the CD&D Alliance team gathered at the University of Denver for a symposium bringing together faculty leaders and student fellows from ten colleges and universities that are participating in a two-year $1.3 million research project, funded by the John Templeton Foundation. This multifaceted project explores the effects of Braver Angels debates and discourse on campus communities – and student leaders have a major role in driving it. Joining Ms. Webb in today's episode are three student fellows in the Templeton project. They include Jordan Phillips from Duke University in North Carolina, Lucas Rice of Texas A&M University Corpus Christi, and Cheyanne Rider of Linn-Benton Community College in Oregon. The wisdom and insights of these students are inspiring and instructive for our politically fractured nation.

About Eric I'm running because the communities of the 27th Congressional District deserve better - a true public servant. I've been fighting for disenfranchised communities across the country and it's time to bring that fight home. I was born and raised in South Texas to a working-class Tejano family, and it's about time that the people are represented by someone who represents true South Texas values. I will stand alongside you every step of the way to make sure we can go beyond dreaming and start achieving. GET TO KNOW ME... My name is Eric Holguin. I was born and raised in a working class family in South Texas, and graduated from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. My father is a respected teacher and championship winning football coach, and my mother is a caring nurse. I’m also very proud to come from a law enforcement family. My two brothers are Texas State Troopers, close relatives work in various levels of law enforcement, and my grandfather was a Justice of the Peace for many years in Jim Hogg County. My support system is mi familia, and they’ve always taught me to work for what I want and never ask for freebies. My late abuela, Maria, taught me to always stand up for those who can’t do so for themselves. She had to do so as a single mother raising my father and tio. Read More Here: http://www.ericforus.com/
Andrea Valdez has been an athlete her entire life. As a former competitive gymnast and long-time coach in the sport, she developed a discipline and respect for the powers that strong minds and bodies can achieve. This led her to continued success in competitive cheerleading and bodybuilding throughout her journey in higher level education. She received a Kinesiology degree from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi with an emphasis in Sports Management and a Minor in Business Administration. Upon graduation, she worked as a Marketing Intern for a Major League Soccer organization, the Houston Dynamo. Andrea then continued on to teach and research at the University of Oklahoma, where she earned her Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology. Her scholarly development and professional experiences in training, coaching, teaching and mentoring lead her to begin a career as an author and video content provider for her own personal website and YouTube channel, both of which began in 2012. Andrea became a 3DMJ athlete for her next figure season in 2013 and for powerlifting in 2014. She continued her journey with the team by teaching alongside the other 3DMJ coaches at posing clinics, and helping to create digital products and content for the 3D Muscle Journey website. After months of collaborating as a project manager and writer, she was officially added as the fifth 3DMJ coach in September 2015. Also in 2015, she had the pleasure of co-authoring a pair of books with Eric Helms and Andy Morgan titled The Muscle and Strength Pyramids. These nutrition and training guides have become the industry standard for anyone trying to gain strength or manipulate body composition. During her current figure off-season, Andrea has begun training in Olympic weightlifting and gymnastics-based movements to pursue competition in a new sport called GRID. She continues to journal her athletic experiences on all of her social media platforms and throughout her personal website at AndreaValdez.com.

THE WILD MAN OF THE NAVIDAD is an unsettling brew of dark comedy, suspense and terror, adapted from real-life journals kept in the early 1970's by Dale S. Rogers while living in Sublime - a town in a sparsely populated part of Texas about 100 miles north of where the movie was lensed. Mr. Rogers lived with his invalid wife, Jean, and hired hand, Mario, in a quaint ranch house on a plantation that can be traced back through at least five generations of his family. It was in this region, in the mid 1800's, that the legend of the wild man was born - a story many believe to be the first documented sightings of a Sasquatch-like being in South Texas. This vintage horror tale debunks history books to tell the veracious, harrowing story of a rural community whose residents were terrified for years by a mysterious creature inhabiting the nearby woods The Wild Man of the Navidad is a 2008 much-praised horror film picked up by IFC Films shortly after its world premiere at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival, and is slated to debut on the Independent Film Channel's Festival Direct platform February 11, 2009. The film is a throwback to drive-in Sasquatch classics of the 1970's like The Legend of Boggy Creek, and is unique in its extremely accurate recreation of their specific vintage style, pacing and feel -- from the vivid, real-life characters all the way down to the period production design and hometown music. The film was co-produced by Kim Henkel, co-writer of the original The Texas Chain Saw Massacre with Tobe Hooper in 1974, and was written, directed and edited by two of Mr. Henkel's screenwriting/production students at Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi, Justin Meeks and Duane Graves. Join us on Nite Callers tonight as we welcome Justin and Duane to share with us how they brought history and legend to the big screen. http://ifcfilms.com/viewFilm.htm?filmId=1376
