Tara stumbled into her experience with Psilocybin, while on a self healing journey in Tulum, Mexico. As a former Paramedic who has suffered with PTSD, anxiety and some depression, she didn't even know how deep her pain was, until she had her first full dose of Psilocybin. Her experience left her with a deep sense of self and a feeling of peace that she had never experienced before. Working in Emergency services for 9 years, she saw an increasing rise in mental health and human suffering, as people become prisoners of their own minds and we enter into a “mental health crises”. She started working with this medicine under the guidance of a mushroom healer and began helping others through their own journeys to healing. She studied Psychology and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Calgary and then went on to train in Paramedicine, holding a A-EMCA, license as a Primary Care Paramedic (PCP), practising for nine years. Tara understands psilocybin and the function it can play on a physiological level. In 2020, she aligned herself with Therapsil, a non-profit organization, advocating for Psilocybin therapy for terminal patients who were suffering from end-of-life distress. She was part of the team that successfully gained the first legal access to Psilocybin for terminal patients in Canada. In the right setting, dose and space, this medicine can offer a very life changing experience to those in need. Tara holds a loving, warm and very safe space for those who are ready to take this journey. Website:

CW: End of life care and distressDr. T and the Truth Fairy welcome Michelle Gagnon, a registered nurse with a background in medical assistance in dying. She is currently pursuing her PhD at the University of British Columbia where her research focuses on ethics, therapeutic psychedelics, and health care practices, specifically where they intersect. Michelle shares a wealth of health care experience and knowledge with Dr. T and Truth Fairy. Michelle's masters' research examined moral distress among intensive care nurses losing patients. She explains what moral distress encompasses and how she is researching the potential for psychedelics to help treat folks struggling with it. Dr. T shares a related personal experience that lends perspective to what Michelle is exploring. In conversation with Michelle Gagnon, Dr. T and Truth Fairy learn about Michelle's work with non-profit association TheraPsil, her hopes for the legalization of psychedelics like psilocybin for medical use, the limits of the current health care structure, and how ethics must factor into every aspect of research and practice. There is a lot of insightful information imparted about Canadian research into psychedelics and the individuality of approach necessitated by each person's reaction to medicines in this episode. “I think sometimes with psychedelics as it's framed now, there's a lot of excitement about it and sometimes we can get lost in the hype that this could change things drastically. And it could, but it's not an easy cure, like you said, it's not necessarily even a cure or an assist for everybody. It's not right for everyone. It's just the way I kind of see it is it's another potential tool under our umbrella of other tools. And it's so unique in so many ways. And I think it is, like you mentioned, disrupting potentially a lot of the way we do things, which is exciting.” - Michelle GagnonAbout Michelle Gagnon, RN:Michelle Gagnon is a registered nurse with a background in emergency critical care and medical assistance in dying. As a by-product of her master's research, which focused on moral distress in pediatric critical care nurses related to the death and dying of child patients, Michelle became interested in the use of psychedelic medicine for distress. She is currently a PhD student at the University of British Columbia with a research focus on the intersection of ethics, therapeutic psychedelics and health care practices. Michelle worked for nonprofit TheraPsil to support Canadians seeking access for medical psilocybin through Health Canada. She also spends time volunteering with the Psychedelic Association of Canada's Ethics Working Group to draft and disseminate articles related to pressing ethical topics in the psychedelic field. In her free time, Michelle is an avid baker and enjoys reading mystery and fantasy. Through mud and snow she enjoys mountain biking the trails where she lives in the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy, the Tsuut'ina, the Stoney Nakoda nations and the Metis Nation, and all who make their homes in the treaty seven region of Southern Alberta.Resources discussed in this episode:Michelle Gagnon on MediumTheraPsilPsychedelic Association of Canada---Punk Therapy: website |email

In this episode of the podcast, I bring you a fantastic conversation with Valorie Masuda, Psychedelic Therapist with Roots to Thrive, “Roots to Thrive is Canada's first and only multidisciplinary, non-profit healthcare practice to legally offer evidence-informed, multi-week, group therapy programs that use a community of practice model, uniquely designed to address trauma and to promote resilience, and to also include the option of psilocybin-assisted and ketamine-assisted group therapy.” source: https://rootstothrive.com/about-us/what-is-roots-to-thrive/Valorie is a palliative care physician and general practitioner in oncology working in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island. She is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of British Columbia currently working on a clinical trial demonstrating the feasibility of delivering psilocybin therapy in a group set, setting and integration model with Roots to Thrive. She is certified in psychedelic medicine through the California Institute of Integral Studies and has also received training through Therapsil and Roots to Thrive. Valorie is a Fellow of the College of Family Physicians, specializing in Emergency Medicine and Palliative Care.I am really excited to bring you this conversation. Those of you who have listened to the podcast know that, as a self experimenter, I have dabbled with the use of Psilocybin in microdoses as a way to manage depression and anxiety. Although we don't discuss microdosing in this episode, you will still find a ton of information and insight here as we discuss the use of psilocyban mushrooms in larger doses as a way to help patients deal with existential end of life mental health difficulties. The common thread through it all is that humans have lost their connection to one another. Human connection used to be vital for survival but is something we have lost through the way we now look at our lives with a colonial lense. We also discuss how our dismissal of indigenous culture has negatively affected our long term mental health with our disconnection from community and nature. We chat about how poor mental health is addressed with pharmacology rather than digging down to the roots of trauma and how natural medicinal compounds such as psilocybin can help.I've been wanting to share a conversation like this for some time and I'm so happy to be bringing this to you now.TherapsilRoots to ThriveMultidisciplinary Association For Psychedelic StudiesSave 15% at Redshift Sports when you use the code MB40Save 25% off a consultation at Cycling 101 when you use the code MB40 at checkout.Save 25% at Dynamic Cyclist when you use the promo code MB40 at checkout.Visit Rollingdale CycleThanks to Ottalaus Inc. for their support. Thanks to Spandex Panda for their support. Thanks to Lakeside Bikes in Invermere for supporting me!

Welcome to the second episode in our series on the potential of psilocybin-assisted therapy to help us live as well as possible with metastatic breast cancer. In this episode, we talk to two women with breast cancer who had legal access to psilocybin-assisted therapy. Journalist and writer Erica Rex participated in a clinical trial at Johns Hopkins after being diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. Mari Singfield, a young Canadian woman living with MBC, gained access through an exemption to Section 56(1) of the Canadian Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, a process facilitated by the organization, TheraPsil. On the personal level, these skills help in developing quiet inner calm and authentic emotional and physical intimacy. This work is backed up with scientific research in the neuroscience and phenomenology of mindfulness, flow, and other exceptional states. As co-author of The Ketamine Papers and other ongoing research, Glenn is participating in the current revival of scientific interest in this legal and promising psychedelic antidepressant. His motivation in advancing the study of ketamine therapy is based on how quickly and effectively it can relieve symptoms of depression—often in just a few hours. He also works with FireflyVR as a content expert developing virtual reality education products to help individuals prepare themselves for ketamine therapy. As Main Editor of the International Journal of Transpersonal Studies, a peer-reviewed scientific journal that focuses on whole person approaches to psychology and wellness, Glenn has brought this publication from fewer than 25 subscribers to almost 100,000 article downloads per year by nearly 50,000 total users. As former professor and founding chair of a PhD program in Integral and Transpersonal Psychology, he attracted more than 100 doctoral students to his doctoral program in just four years. As co-editor of The Wiley-Blackwell Handbook of Transpersonal Psychology, Glenn has played a key role in the revival of transpersonal psychology, and in identifying and cultivating a second wave of the field based on embodiment, social embeddedness, diversity, and transformation.Glenn is transitioning out of the university setting to spend more time doing scientific research and to give more room to his small boutique coaching practice where he teaches and applies the attentional skills he has developed. The skills that Glenn teaches are based in bottom-up emergence of one's own unique capacities and creativity—one that complements more conventional approaches to management of feelings and behavior. As such, working with Glenn is an entry onto a path that opens toward more integrated ways of bringing one's whole self to every area of life. Now brought to you by Scout Magazine. Marijuana was legalized in Canada just a few years back and we are certain there are not many who are upset with this. Psilocybin, the chemical altering compound found in "magic mushrooms" is still illegal. It has been since 1974. This needs to change. Enter in Spencer Hawkswell. He's the CEO of a new Victoria based non-profit called TheraPsil. He helped co-found this venture with his friend and mentor Dr. Bruce Tobin who is a psychotherapist. Together they've helped a small group of Canadians in times of need, specifically end of life treatment. In doing so they've given those individuals at this time a new medicine with which to work with, one that isn't addictive and completely natural. The results have been life changing. But they want to help all Canadians and until Health Canada changes the law regarding the manufacture, production and use of psilocybin, their hands are limited. Enter a few weeks ago where they submitted a 165 page proposal detailing how psilocybin should be legalized. In this interview Spencer goes through this document, how he sees this process unfolding and what psilocybin access and treatment will look like. You can hear it in his voice, he wants to help and we appreciate his candour and empathy for this cause. We're confident you'll enjoy this one. In this episode, Joe interviews Nick Meyers and Tyler Chandler, the makers of the documentary that has made a lot of waves over the last year (and been praised on this podcast): "Dosed." They first visited the podcast last year, a few months after the film's release, and are back to talk about the response it's received and their progress on "Dosed 2: Psilocybin and the Art Of Living," which will follow the journey of one of the patients granted legal palliative psilocybin therapy by TheraPsil last year. And although it's not mentioned, they're actually planning a "Dosed" trilogy. They talk about their early psychedelic experiences, the accusations that some of Adrianne's scenes in the film are fake, the risk profile of iboga and how age can be a factor in its efficacy, the strength and passion of the iboga community, the complications of methadone in our opioid crisis, "The Pharmacist" docuseries, pill mills, the absurdity of the drug war, and the argument for treating someone for a year vs. a lifetime. They also talk about how many people have been inspired to change their lives after watching "Dosed." If you haven't seen it yet, "Dosed" is now available on several streaming platforms. Notable Quotes “The way we did it was, as I said earlier, maybe not exactly correct, but she still had the profoundly beneficial experience, and I think that’s because her intentions were there. She was ready to make a change in her life. And anybody that’s looking to get past depression, anxiety, and/or addiction, you need to have that shift and realize it’s time to make a change and move forward.” -Tyler On criticisms of the film: “I find it actually a little frustrating, but I can just go back just a few years in time and if I had heard about a film like this, not knowing what I know now, I would probably be like, ‘Yeah, right. That sounds hokey or kind of like, bullshit.’” -Tyler “A better judge of what it’s doing and the impact that it’s making is not a negative comment here or there; it’s the fact that we have emails in our inbox every single day from people that are expressing to us that the film changed their lives, [and] it set them on a different path, away from their struggles and towards potential solutions. It’s a very, very good feeling to be a part of something like that.” -Nick “Mental health is a problem that is actually getting worse and worse over the last few decades even though the pharmaceutical industry is supposed to have all the answers. But ‘Why is it still getting worse and worse?’ is the question.” -Tyler Links Dosedmovie.com Their last appearance on the podcast: Tyler Chandler, Nick Meyers and Adrianne – Dosed Movie: Psychedelics and Mental Health Contribute/donate to Dosed 2 Doubleblindmag.com: Vancouver Becomes First City in Canada to Decriminalize All Drugs Therapsil.ca: 4 Palliative Canadians approved for end of life psilocybin therapy through section 56(1); First legal medical exemptions for psilocybin in Canada since 1970s “The Pharmacist” docuseries on Netflix Apnews.com: Florida ‘pill mills’ were ‘gas on the fire’ of opioid crisis Vetsolutions.org About Nick Meyers and Tyler Chandler Nicholas Meyers is a Canadian producer, writer and cinematographer, known for the multi-award winning feature documentary, DOSED.
