It's not just big cities where public safety is a concern. In the Cowichan Valley, for example, there's an area surrounding the Trans-Canada Highway where some residents and business owners say crime, drug use, and street disorder mean they don't feel safe in their own community. It's in the region's urban core, where North Cowichan, Duncan, and Cowichan Tribes land meet. On this episode we talk to some of those people, as well as to those working to try and change things.++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Want to hear some good news out of the Cowichan Valley?Check out these stories:Fresh Vancouver Island food delivered straight to your doorstepThis native plant nursery will bring traditional foods and medicines to the Cowichan Valley

He singlehandedly brought Canadian Whisky to the attention of Canada and The World. His latest book is the updated and expanded third edition of Canadian Whisky - The Essential Portable Expert. I love the first line. "Handles, mickeys, shots or drams, no matter what its measure, Canadian whisky is a story of Canada." Davin is my ultimate connection to the world of Canadian Whisky. He helped create these awards and leads the judging team. Grant Stevely - Distiller at DubhGlas (Oliver) In the fall of 2010, Grant purchased some property at Gallagher Lake near Oliver, B.C. “I wanted to build a distillery from the ground up, which is distinctly different from a lot of other distilleries,” he says. “So we built the distillery with expansion in mind.”  Grant Stevely[/caption] At the heart of the operation is a German-made Arnold Holstein still. No sooner did Stevely open Dubh Glas Distillery in the spring of 2015, when he began winning awards for his first product, Noteworthy Gin. “Dubh Glas” is Scottish Gaelic for “from the dark water.” It's pronounced “Douglas,” which happens to be Stevely's middle name. Sheringham (Langford, BC) Sheringham Distillery  won Best Contemporary Gin at the 2019 World Gin Awards Its Seaside Gin captured the award against World-class competition from 23 countries,  including the UK  and USA. "We created Sheringham because we saw a hole in the market: the opportunity to create the world's most drinkable spirits. This approach has served us well, and in the seven years since founding Sheringham, we have been on the ground building authentic connections with buyers, retailers, and consumers, sharing our story and highlighting our chef-driven approach to innovation and quality."  (Distiller Mag) Jason and wife  Alayne now have their growing portfolio available across Canada and in 15 markets in the USA. Graeme Macaloney - Master Distiller  Macaloney Island Distillery (Saanich) There once was a wee Scottish lad by the name of Graeme Macaloney who found a summer job bottling whisky and fell in love with Uisge Beatha, the ‘water of life'. He dedicated his heart to finding a way to make whisky for a living. Graeme set up shop on Saanich, just outside Victoria. Some of his favourite Scottish and Irish whiskies were island-made. Graeme has found his "island" in Canada. Congratulations Champ!! - Distillery opened in 2016 - The first whisky made onsite and  released in 2020 -Canadian Whisky of the Year - 2025 Brennan Colebank - Master Distiller Stillhead Distillery (Duncan) Founded by the Colebank family, Stillhead Distillery Inc. opened its doors in October of 2017. We're nearing the end of a volatile year in BC Wine. It featured wildfires, floods, COVID, road closures, price, tax and wage increases and two cold snaps over two Winters. Vineyards were damaged or destroyed by the freeze. Wineries and growers were facing a 2025 with little or no wines to cellar and sell. The Wine Industry and Government leadership came up with a plan to allow BC Wineries to harvest next year's fruit this year in Washington, Oregon, California, Ontario and The Cowichan Valley. As long as the label states "Crafted in BC" and the process is transparent. Will BC wine fans buy their favourite labels if the fruit comes from another region? If they like the new juice, will they still embrace their original BC wines? What gets replanted, and what new varietals will we see growing in the new BC? So much to consider. Which is why we've invited four of the most connected leaders from the BC wine industry to share opinions, suggestions and creative ideas over the course of an hour.   They are:   Cristine Coletta:  Co-Owner Okanagan Crush Pad.  For 9 years,  executive director of the BC Wine Institute! Odds of an NDP Majority

Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents - A day before the election 338Canada is predicting a slight NDP majority. 338Canada is a campaign website that uses available polling data, each riding's history, and population data etc. It predicts the outcome of the election for every riding and has been used in 13 elections. They have been right close to 90% of the time. They were wrong, but still within the margin of error 6% and totally wrong in 4% out of 1,657 electoral district races. This prediction for the election was made Oct 16: 49 seats for the NDP and 42 for the Conservatives. As this is based on projections that show the popular vote very close (45% to 43% respectively) and this is within the margin of error (4%), the race could still be very close. The NDP need 47 seats to form a majority government. They are especially vulnerable in the 5 ridings where their lead is within the margin of error. This means their number of seats could (but probably won't) sink to 44. The Conservative lead is especially vulnerable in 10 ridings, which means their total number of seats could be as low as 32. Our North Island riding is one of the ones where the Conservatives have a slight lead, but the race is so close 338Canada is calling it a ‘toss up.' The popular vote for: Andy Kindy was projected at 44%, Michele Babchuk at 43% and Nic Dedeluk 13%. The margin of error for both Kindy and Babchuk is 7%, which means either of them could win. The Green Party is expected to take 2 ridings (Saanich North and the Islands and Furstenau's own Victoria Beacon Hill riding) could take 3 and it is possible they may take 4. They are only 2% behind the Conservatives in West Vancouver Sea to Sky, which means that race is still a ‘toss up' and they are 6% behind the NDP in Furstenau's old Cowichan Valley riding. Overall, 338Canada is stating the Conservatives could still win, but gives them only a 20% chance. They gave the NDP a 69% chance of victory and a 5% chance this will only be a minority government. Of course if a large number of NDP supporters stay home, as happened when Christy Clark was elected in 2011, the Conservatives could win. The recent Angus Reid poll identified two segments of the population who are especially pro-NDP: women and males under the age of 34. Given the closeness of the vote, their votes (or decision to not vote) may decide the election. The Green Party's hopes of increasing their number of seats beyond 2 most likely depend on the same segments of the population.

Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents - 338Canada's latest projection, taken on Sunday October 13, shows the NDP may be heading towards a majority government.  The NDP was leading in 49 ridings, but in 6 of these only by a narrow margin. The Conservative Party of BC was leading in 42 ridings, but in 7 by a nose. Our own North Island riding is one of the the latter. Conservative candidate Anna Kindy is currently projected as a nose ahead of incumbent Michele Babchuk, 45% to 43%. As the margin of error for these projections is 7%, it is actually too close to call. A new projection came out Sunday, and the principle change appears to be more people turning to the Green Party. Prior to the the televised all-candidates debate on October 8, it looked like they might be reduced to a single seat (Saanich North and the Islands). Saturday's projection suggested Furstenau has taken taken a 6 point lead in Victoria-Beacon, as of Sunday that lead is 9%. When I originally posted this article, the Greens were only 2% behind in West Vancouver-Sea to Sky. This is where Green candidate Jeremy Valeriote lost by a mere 60 votes in 2020. Sunday's projection shows them tied with the Conservatives at 37% each. The Greens also appear to be narrowing the gap in Furstenau's old riding, Cowichan Valley, where John Kouri was 9% behind the NDP on Saturday. On Sunday, it was only 6%. At the moment the Green Party appears to be leading or in a very close race for 4 seats. They currently do appear to be gaining momentum and hope to send MLA's from 6 ridings to the next legislature. North Island is not one of the six. The latest projection shows the Green candidate at a mere 13%. Of course these statistics are the at best the most likely results if the election were yesterday. There are still five days until the election.

My guest for this episode is Zac Brown of Alderlea Vineyards in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Zac grows an array of grapes in his vineyard, some that he has to spray multiple times every year, and some that he doesn't really have to spray but chooses to once per year. Zac grows resilient wine grapes (some PIWIs), side by side with more common vinifera, and he has direct comparisons between their resilience and performance in many ways. His findings are striking: the resilient hybrids out-perform vinifera in every measure, including fungal resistance, drought resistance, recovery from extreme heat and cold, and productivity... and the hybrids don't need to be sprayed to do this.  In addition to talking about the viticultural advantages to growing resilient grape varieties, we discuss wine making techniques for working with specific resilient grapes. Like any grape, they can make beautiful wine but each variety requires its own specific care in the winery to elicit its best flavors. Zac had some great insights for making wine with the varieties he grows. Zac is at the forefront of a revolution - the dawn of the ecological era of viticulture, guided by biology. His mixed vineyard provides a great example of a way that the larger wine industry may begin to transition to a kind of wine that can withstand climate change... and be interesting, indigenous, and delicious.  https://www.alderlea.ca/ Support this episode by subscribing via patreon. She is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of British Columbia currently working on a clinical trial demonstrating the feasibility of delivering psilocybin therapy in a group set, setting and integration model with Roots to Thrive. She is certified in psychedelic medicine through the California Institute of Integral Studies and has also received training through Therapsil and Roots to Thrive. Valorie is a Fellow of the College of Family Physicians, specializing in Emergency Medicine and Palliative Care.I am really excited to bring you this conversation. Those of you who have listened to the podcast know that, as a self experimenter, I have dabbled with the use of Psilocybin in microdoses as a way to manage depression and anxiety. Although we don't discuss microdosing in this episode, you will still find a ton of information and insight here as we discuss the use of psilocyban mushrooms in larger doses as a way to help patients deal with existential end of life mental health difficulties. The common thread through it all is that humans have lost their connection to one another. Human connection used to be vital for survival but is something we have lost through the way we now look at our lives with a colonial lense. We also discuss how our dismissal of indigenous culture has negatively affected our long term mental health with our disconnection from community and nature. We chat about how poor mental health is addressed with pharmacology rather than digging down to the roots of trauma and how natural medicinal compounds such as psilocybin can help.I've been wanting to share a conversation like this for some time and I'm so happy to be bringing this to you now.TherapsilRoots to ThriveMultidisciplinary Association For Psychedelic StudiesSave 15% at Redshift Sports when you use the code MB40Save 25% off a consultation at Cycling 101 when you use the code MB40 at checkout.Save 25% at Dynamic Cyclist when you use the promo code MB40 at checkout.Visit Rollingdale CycleThanks to Ottalaus Inc. for their support. Thanks to Spandex Panda for their support. Thanks to Lakeside Bikes in Invermere for supporting me!

Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - Cortes Kayaks bioluminescence tours have been setting out from Mansons Lagoon every Friday and Saturday for the past month. There were about a dozen people in our group, which was mostly composed of off islanders from Vancouver, Victoria or the Cowichan Valley. The only experienced kayakers were our guides, Jolaine Boucher and Maria Francis. However most of the group had some experience and the only rookie was me. “How can you live on Cortes Island for twelve years and not go out in a kayak?” asked an astonished Boucher. This is her fifth season as a guide and she has not lost her enthusiasm. It was in her voice as she squealed with pleasure, paddling close to the phytoplankton covered marine vegetation along the west bank of Mansons Lagoon. A milk-like bioluminescent trail followed every stroke. Or when her awestruck voice came through the darkness, “Did you see that shooting star?” Boucher was our principal guide, who we followed. Francis kept to the rear, where she could come to the aid of any stragglers. Not that there were many stragglers. Our trip from Mansons Landing to the mouth of Gorge Harbour was punctuated by periodic regrouping, as Boucher ensured all of her flock kept together. This is Francis' first season as a guide, and I suspect she will soon be leading groups on her own. Assembling at Mansons Lagoon about 8 PM on Aug 13, 2022 – Photo by Roy L Hales Our session began with an introductory lesson of everything from a ‘bum drop,' as you are entering the kayak's cockpit, to how to hold a paddle. “Never stand up in a kayak,” explained Boucher. “98% of all flips occur when you are entering or leaving the kayak.” The only thing I found difficult was sitting in the kayak with my legs sticking out in front of me. I blamed this on my 71-year-old body's loss of flexibility. While it is more efficient to paddle sitting erect, I could only do this for short distances. Googling this later, I read, “the muscles used to maintain erect posture are out of tone.” I slouched back in my seat throughout most of the trip.
