How do you forgive someone who committed unspeakable horror against someone you love? In 2015, 21-year-old white supremacist, Dylann Roof, was welcomed into a bible study at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. Minutes later, he opened fire and murdered nine members of the church. At his trial, the family members of those killed got the chance to speak to Roof publicly, voicing their pain; and some, in the midst of such anguish, publicly forgave him. But Sharon Risher, whose mother was shot and killed by Roof that day, was not immediately ready to forgive her mother's killer; for her, it was a long, hard road to forgiveness. Today, we discuss Sharon's book entitled "For Such a Time as This: Hope and Forgiveness After the Charleston Massacre," which explores her journey of grief, healing, and grace after her mother's murder. Our hope is in heaven - not here! I want to say to Christians in Ukraine, in China, or wherever you may be, under persecution or in lack, our hope is not here - out hope is in heaven! Paul is showing the Colossians so clearly in verses 5-10, “This HOPE, preached in the Gospel of truth – despite the trouble and persecution – brings forth fruit in all the world, and in you, since the day you heard it and knew the Grace of God in truth.” The Gospel preached to the first generation Church was preached to a Church which would suffer persecution and death – and here Paul continues to the Colossians, verses 7-10, “You learned this Gospel from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, a faithful minister of Christ – and he has told me of your love in the Spirit and, from the day we heard of this, we have not ceased to pray for you, and desire that you be filled with the knowledge of God's Will in wisdom and spiritual understanding, that you might walk worthy of the Lord, pleasing Him, being fruitful in good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God.” Paul is saying, whatever the circumstances, however hard, walk worthy of the Lord in order to please, not yourself, not the pastor, but that you might please the Lord, and that you might be fruitful in what you do!

"The instant her phone rang, Reverend Sharon Risher sensed something was horribly wrong. Something had happened at Emanuel AME Church, the church of her youth in Charleston, South Carolina, and she knew her mother was likely in the church at Bible study. Even before she heard the news, her chaplain's instinct told her the awful truth: her mother was dead, along with two cousins. What she couldn't imagine was that they had been murdered by a white supremacist. Plunged into the depths of mourning and anger and shock, Sharon could have wallowed in the pain. (Mini-series on Newborns and Grief, Part 1/3) Are you raising a newborn baby without a dad in their life? Are you in the early stages of your own personal grief? Then you will find hope and comfort in this episode. Having walked out her own grief, Lori has a unique understanding of how the first several months of the healing process is similar to pregnancy, birth, and the newborn stage. Like a first-time mom, you might not have a clue what to do with this grief. Lori is here to help by talking about: The basic needs of a mom in her newborn stage of grief (the first few months after loss)
 Denial - God's “grace coma”
The need for spiritual nourishment for the journey
Finding a promise of God that will allow you to grieve with hope
The importance of tears in the healing process and how precious they are to God
How the Holy Spirit prays for you when you can't pray for yourself
Journaling to record the story of God's faithfulness for your child to read later - even with the hard parts
Learning to embrace the pain to deliver your “newborn grief”
Knowing that, just as you hold, love, and comfort your child, God is holding you.
Lori includes a section with Scripture and prayer to wash over you and your newborn baby and a special song that was a great source of comfort and hope during her own stage of “newborn grief.” Dear Mama, please know that you are not alone! The upside down theology of Christianity- down is up and up is down – We lose ourselves in order to find ourselves; admit we are wrong so we can be declared right; are strongest when we’re weakest;. this one is We rejoice in suffering instead of learning to just get over it or learning to put up with it. There’s a secret here, a mystery, a hidden treasure as usual which declares the reality of a life lived with God. It’s the story of the gospel again in one of its 10,000 reasons. Suffering produces enduranceRomans 5:2 but we rejoice (buoyant) in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance (seeing the potential - pain/gain Hebrews 12:2), and endurance produces character (‘dokime’ trustworthy, genuine, tried and true - sine-cere - without wax), and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame (make us feel worthless and helpless), because God's love has been poured into our hearts (a cloudburst after the drought Joel 2:28) through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. (The healing rain) What is suffering? In this life we live with suffering and limitations. They belong to our limited being as distinct from God who is an unlimited being. Suffering is the human experience of our reaction to our limitations – Can’t have what we want, do what we want, be what we want or know who we really are. This is actually our reaction to losing our entitlement to certain things (the current global crisis). This disorientates us and leads to an identity crisis – what I thought was mine now isn’t mine. Who is the ‘me’ that says it’s mine (Babies - and kids in kindy). Losing the true ‘me’ brings about shame (makes me somehow feel worthless or helpless or hopeless. Endurance forms Character. If I cannot accept and endure the reality of this loss or deprivation that is due to limitations character is not formed. Jesus came into the midst of our limitations. He did not come to remove them but he has given us his unlimited risen self in the midst of them. (Hebrews 12:2-4 He endured the cross despising the shame, resisting unto blood). As we learn to live consciously with him we can ‘lose’ our me-self and find our true self (Matthew 16:25). limitations are now met and endured with acceptance (1Thessalonians 5:13). This opens the way for grace to become buoyant in trials (rejoicing). This character (sincerity, inner strength) creates a new hope This hope is an expectation of God’s goodness and love. We then experience the love of God poured out upon us. We are not disoriented, or made to feel ashamed (worthless, helpless or hopeless). We are made to feel worthwhile! (Joel 2:27) This Hope fills our real self with God’s loveWe begin to know who we are and to live in the potential of who we were designed to be in Christ.

UNBREAKABLE PROMISE - NEW PREACHING SERIES What is your promise for life and eternity? What does God think about you? Does God change in moods and seasons? In UNBREAKABLE PROMISE we discover the power of a COVENANT. While contemporary ideas of a “promise” express future intentions, God has taken us back to the Cross of Christ where He swore by Himself. What that means is God isn’t bolstering hope around what He intends to do; He has committed His entire being and existence in what He has already done. For God to change His mind about you - about your future, or your daily nurture, or your freedom – He would have to self-destruct. The power of this COVENANT, that Jesus has invited us into, is that we never have to question God’s will for our protection, health, strength, prosperity and contentment. The CALL on our lives will lead us to uncomfortable and inconvenient places, often surrounded with sufferings in obedience to God. However, the COVENANT has forever established our welfare as we fulfill the CALL. This series will change the way you think of God, yourself and the provisions He has generously provided!   TODAY’S PREACHING PROMISES, PROMISES? GUARANTEES?
