De uitspraak van een raadslid over een Marokkaans trouwfeest dat de Urker zondagsrust zou hebben verstoord, maakt nogal wat los. Maar ook een mogelijke kerkscheuring wordt nader toegelicht. Een gevarieerde podcast weer, die ons van Spitsbergen naar de Urker camping en van de rotonde bij de Michiel de Ruyterbrug tot Nunspeet brengt.

Poolbioloog Maarten Loonen van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen ziet dat al lange tijd met eigen ogen, en met pijn in het hart. De afgelopen 35 jaar reisde hij elk jaar af naar Spitsbergen, waar hij onder andere onderzoek doet naar de ecologie en vogeltrek in het gebied. Maar in al die jaren zag hij het klimaat op de Noordelijke eilanden zo erg veranderen, dat juist die klimaatverandering een centraal thema in zijn vak is geworden.  Presentator Ruben Rosen Jacobson Maarten vannacht over de verdwijnende gletsjers, over zijn onderzoek naar ganzen. Kraakblauw ijs dat als gletsjer door een landschap meandert. Kilometersdikke ijskappen die tot ver aan de horizon rijken. Het zijn prachtige beelden in natuurdocumentaires, maar voor hoe lang nog?  De temperaturen op aarde blijven stijgen en de kans dat dit het warmste jaar ooit zal worden is groot. Zelfs als het lukt om de uitstoot van broeikasgassen fors te verminderen, zijn ijsvrije zomers bijvoorbeeld in het Noordpoolgebied niet langer te voorkomen.  Wetenschappers maken zich zorgen. Sinds gisteren zijn zij samengekomen op de alternatieve klimaattop in Parijs 'One Planet, Polar Summit'. Dit is de EERSTE klimaattop specifiek gericht op het behoud van de poolgebieden en gletsjers op aarde! Hoe gaat het met de poolgebieden? Zijn ze nog te redden? Aan al het moois komt een eind. Zo ook aan de Spitsbergen reis. Want bijzonder was het! In 8 dagen tijd hebben we alle vogelsoorten mogelijk kunnen zien, Ijsberen, walvissen, poolvossen en ga zo maar door. Maar we zijn gelukkig nog niet klaar. Onze vogelguru Matthias vertelde ons dat dit echt een dag voor vogelaars zou kunnen worden. We gaan namelijk naar een meer toe en waar water is, zijn vogels. Zeker nu er nog veel ijs ligt. Er is namelijk nog één vogel die we missen op het lijstje en dat is de Rosse franjepoot. Bij deze vogel heeft, in tegenstelling tot de meeste vogels, het vrouwtje een veel fraaier kleed dan het mannetje. Ook neemt het mannetje het broeden op zich en zorgt hij voor de kleintjes als die eenmaal uit het ei zijn. Het vrouwtje zorgt voor het eten. Een hele geëmancipeerde vogelsoort zou je kunnen zeggen. We hadden twee doelsoorten deze reis. De eerste hebben we vorige aflevering gezien en hoe! Een ijsbeer moeder met twee kleintjes. Een mooier beeld hadden we niet kunnen dromen. Maar qua vogels staat er ook nog een hoog op het lijstje. We blijven deze aflevering aan dek van het schip want we gaan door het pakijs varen. We naderen de 80e breedtegraad en hierachter ligt zowaar de noordpool. Dat we hier ooit zouden komen met de vogelspotcast is een wonder. Maar goed de vogeldoelsoort. Het is de witste vogel op aarde en daarmee straalt die bijna iets godelijks uit. Vorige aflevering kregen we een van de mooiste hoog arctische vogels in onze kijker; de koningseider. Maar vandaag hebben we kans op de 'the holy grail' van de Spitsbergenreis. We varen steeds noordelijker en dat betekent dat we wellicht het grootste en gevaarlijkste roofdier op aarde kunnen tegenkomen. Ja mensen zet u schrap. Dag twee van de reis begint met een zodiac tour. In rubberbootjes varen we langs euwenoude en adembenemde gletsjers. Op veel vogelgeweld moeten we volgens Arjan niet rekenen, maar je weet het nooit met de natuur. Na de lunch maken we ons op voor de tweede excursie van de dag. "You snooze you lose" luidt een bekende uitspraak. De grootste nachtmerrie voor een vogelgids is om te laat te komen voor je excursie. Maar het kan de beste overkomen. Zo ook Arjan en Gisbert. Maar gelukkig was de groep alert en werden de jongens nog snel aan land gebracht voor de eerste excursie. Met schaamrood op de kaken stamelde Arjan dat hij het goed zou maken. En dat deed hij dan ook. All aboard! De reis is begonnen. We vertrekken van Longyearbjen richting de St. Jonsfjorden. Dit is ruim een dag varen dus we begeven ons veel op het dek. Maar de Noordse stormvogels en de verschillende alken vliegen ons al om de oren. Daarbij kan er potentieel elk moment een walvis of ander groot zoogdier in onze kijker verschijnen. Wereldreiziger Arjan is zichtbaar enthousiast, want hij is nog nooit zo noorderlijk geweest. Daarbij heeft hij alle soorten wel eens gezien, maar nog nooit zo mooi in zomerkleed. Het is zo ver. Arjan en Gisbert maken zich op voor de vogelreis van hun leven. Waar het begon met een rondje Vondelpark, begeven de jongens zich over drie dagen op een van de meest afgelegen plekken op aarde; Spitsbergen (google maar). Maar bij een grote reis als deze hoort ook voorpret en serieuze voorbereiding. Gisbert is benieuwd hoe Arjan zich op grote vogelreizen als deze voorbereidt. I had oil painter Summer Spitsbergen on my podcast today. She is a young and upcoming artist that I happened to have met last summer at the C.M. Russell Museum. They have their big show every third week of August (which you should all go to). It's a great show and while I was up there I fell in love with her work.Summer is a self-taught artist, hyper-focused on what she wants to achieve with her painting. When you're doing that as an artist and you have great talent, you can go very, very far. She's a real cowgirl too, living on a ranch with her husband raising Wagyu cattle as well as chickens. Summer does all of this while raising her three kids and somehow finding the time to paint every single day.We talk about what it takes to succeed with such a full life. You know, what's that magic serum that allows you to break free and be creative while successfully making it your profession? The first attempt on Everest took place in 1922 by a British team led by George Leigh Mallory. What happened is an extraordinary story full of controversy, drama, and incident, populated by a set of larger-than-life characters straight out of an adventure novel. I spoke with Mick Conefrey about this story. Bio: For thirty years I've made documentaries for the BBC and all the major British and US channels. I've been everywhere from the Arctic to the Himalayas to Angkor Wat and written books on mountaineering and exploration. I've been lucky to have been able to film all over over the world from Cambodia to K2, from Puerto Rico to Spitsbergen. I'm particularly interested in films about exploration and mountaineering, and have filmed in the Alps, the Himalayas and Alaska. Several of my films have won international and British awards, at festivals such as Trento, Telluride, Banff and Kendal. As both a film maker and a writer, I'm fascinated by the art of narrative. I love to find good stories with complex characters dealing with even more complex situations. My definition of good drama is what happens when people are put under pressure, and exploration and mountaineering provide plenty examples of this.
