I'll be back with the fallout from the election next week. But until then here's a Halloween Hangover episode of the show that consists of my appearance on Jason Myles' Pop Life. Toure Reed also joined the program. We talked about teen-campers in the woods horror movies from FRIDAY THE 13TH and SLEEPAWAY CAMP franchises to more obscure titles like THE BURNING, MADMAN, and CHEERLEADER CAMP. Toure gave his thoughts on Joss Wheadon's CABIN IN THE WOODS and its tongue-in-cheek "meta" approach to horror. Realize everyone is burned out from the election, so hopefully this episode will be some type of reprieve.

Holly Campbell gave birth to her son, Jake in 2007. At just two and a half months old, Jake suddenly stopped breathing and was rushed to the hospital. The following day, Holly and her husband were told the devastating news that their baby was not going to survive. In their grief, they wanted to give their son a legacy and help others, so the selfless decision to donate Jake's heart was made. During this same time period and nearly 1,000 miles away, Kim Scadlock gave birth to her son, Beckham. Beckham seemed healthy at birth, but soon medical staff discovered he was struggling to breathe. After tests were done, Kim and her husband were told Beckham's only chance to survive was to receive a heart transplant. Thankfully, Jake's heart was a match for Beckham and the transplant took place. Afterward, while both families were in the process of grieving and healing, they thought of each other often, although they did not know each other's identity. Through the organ donor networks, the families were eventually able to contact each other and in 2010, Holly, Kim and their families met for the very first time at the Transplant Games in Wisconsin. Thirteen years later in 2023, Holly and Kim were invited to performed the song “For Good” from the musical, “Wicked” on the popular television show, America's Got Talent. “For Good” has a special meaning for Holly as it was the last song she was able to sing to Jake before he passed and also special for Kim, as it was the first song she sang to Beckham after he received his new heart. In this episode of Your History Your Story, Holly and Kim will share their story of love, friendship and the importance of life saving organ donation. In the early 2000s the South African mining industry carried an inescapable risk for its workers. Alack of innovative tools, minimal research and poor organisational cultures meant that miners wentto work without knowing if they’d return home, safely. Over two decades later, the industry can boasta sterling improvement in managing health and safety, a very critical factor in every mining operation.Minerals Council South Africa head of safety and sustainable development DR SIZWE PHAKATHI tellsHLENGIWE MOTAUNG.
We all go through life facing our own battles. Often times, a voice in our head convinces us to think we are in the battlefield alone but, when we open up to someone else, we soon realize we are not the only one with wounds and battle scars. In this episode, I sit down with my dear friend Kim Ciarcia as we reflect on our shared experiences of recovery with respective eating disorders and what they have taught us about mental health in general. Health and wellbeing of the individual is not achieved at one moment of life and kept the same from then on. Rather, it is a life long journey that changes with time and requires us to persistently challenge the status quo, our thoughts, and develop patience in the relationships with ourselves and others. Leave this episode feeling empowered and connected, and share it with a friend. -K xx {Ephesians 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the authorities, against the powers of this world's darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms}Ways you can help Hurricane Ian relief:-- donation and volunteer networks --https://convoyofhope.org/https://samaritanspurse.org/our-ministry/hurricane-ian/?utm_source=Bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=m_YYHI-N22V&utm_content=USDR&msclkid=ca3a4b30e389137b6504287139d69bb0&utm_term=hurricane%20ian%20reliefhttps://www.redcross.org/donate/disaster-relief.html/?cid=disasternonbrand&med=cpc&source=b&scode=RSG00000E017&msclkid=01c20fd616dd1bf6829b6c97ccaba2c3&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Disaster%7CNonBrand&utm_term=hurricane%20ian%20relief&utm_content=Hurricane%20Ian&gclid=01c20fd616dd1bf6829b6c97ccaba2c3&gclsrc=3p.dshttps://www.elevationoutreach.org/https://www.americanhumane.org/monitoring-hurricane-ian/?msclkid=df7291672b0f1e337682f226f016cfe5&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=SEM%7CBrand%7CUS%7CHurricaneIan%7CGoogle&utm_term=hurricane%20ian%20how%20to%20help&utm_content=Ian%7CPhrase**Trigger warning for eating disorders and mental health recovery**
This Sunday we conclude the Sermon on the Mount Series: The Good Life, Human Flourishing According to Jesus! What a journey it's been to hear Jesus preach this famous sermon and hear his heart for everyone who will hear Him. As he concludes he makes one last appeal to all of us to choose wisely. Jesus came to give us life and life more abundantly. He accomplished what was needed to give us life, His life, by taking our sins upon himself so that we might be forgiven and receive the Holy Spirit who imparts Christ's righteousness to us. His final words in Matt. 7:24-27 invite us to build our lives on Him!

Today, I'm talking to Don Ezra. Don's illustrious career in the insurance and finance industries began in the 70's and his achievements are numerous. His 26-year career at Russell Investments culminated when he became its Co-Chair of Global Consulting. In 2010, Don "graduated" to a part-time schedule that gave him more freedom to pursue a wide variety of other interests. Since then, Don has also served on the Joint Investment Committee of Margaret A Cargill Philanthropies. He's been on the advisory board of the World Pension Summit and on the Scientific Advisory Board of Manifold Partners, LLC. He's also become an occasional contributor to the Financial Times, where he's the author of a column called The Art of Investing. Don's passion is to teach others about personal financial planning, investing, and the economic and subjective aspects of happiness, especially as it pertains to life after full-time work–what some of us still call "retirement." In his newest book, Life Two, he helps readers conquer their irrational fears, put themselves in the driver's seat, get an understanding of their financial situation, and take control of this extraordinary period of life. In our conversation, Don and I talk about why your identity is not defined by what you get paid to do, the irrational fears so many people face as they transition into retirement, and how to find real, lasting happiness at every stage of life. Sweathead Facebook group member Philipp Paster lives in Kyiv, Ukraine. Much of his family is there, too. But everyone lives in different apartments. On Friday, March 11, Philipp (formerly a brand strategist at TBWA Ukraine) spoke with me about what it's been like to be living in Kyiv during the Russian invasion. I only watched the documentary “Winter On Fire”, which looks at the toppling of one of Ukraine's leaders Yanukovych, after speaking with Philipp. Watching it before speaking with Philipp would have given me better questions. Like many of us, I'm only just starting to wrap my head around the history of Kyiv and Ukraine. Still, many thanks to Philipp for sharing his thoughts with us. I'll post another interview with three Ukrainians later this week. **

The Simple Sophisticate - Intelligent Living Paired with Signature Style
"When we speak a language that denies us choice, we forget the life in ourselves for a robotlike mentality that disconnects us from our own core." —Marshall Rosenberg, Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life Two lives may look like one another, but one may indeed be fulfilling, while the other a life of disdain and pain. Choosing to live as we do versus living a life out of an expectation, obligation, avoidance of guilt, approval, to avoid shame, or to gain money is to choose a life of integrity according to Marshall Rosenberg. When we choose a life of integrity, we discover the ability to tap into our essential and most sincere self, and enable ourselves to share with the world the gift and talent only we can give. While sharing a list of actions to refrain from taking as to avoid the latter of the two options mentioned above would certainly simplify how to choose to live, there is no such universal list. Rather, the list of what we choose to do versus what we do out of a feeling of "have-to" will be unique to each of us. How can we discern the difference? Rosenberg's determinating factor is if the sole motivating force for our actions comes from a place to "simply make life wonderful for others and ourselves" then we are choosing the life we are living. And the latter - making life wonderful for ourselves - is perhaps the most important. We must pay attention to our needs. Rosenberg writes "we cultivate self-compassion by consciously choosing in daily life to act only in service to our own needs and values rather than out of duty, for extrinsic rewards or to avoid guilt, shame and punishment". Understanding fully and completely what our needs are is the homework we each must tend to in order to live a life everyday that we enjoy living. I highly recommend reading Rosenberg's book as he delineates clearly and in great detail the common societal pushback to his assertion about choosing how you live versus adhering to a life out of anything but choosing it. The result of any action made void of choice is a deprivation of joy at the very least and resentment, detestation, misery, anger, and a loss of self and a denial to the world of the uniquenesss only we can share at the very worst. We have been taught falsely and ironically selfishly by outside institutions of many sorts to believe choosing and valuing our needs is hedonistic, wrong and, self-absorbed. Primarily we have accepted such a purported claim because their "marketing department" is skilled in the ways of psychology as they tap into our perceived need to be accepted - approved. However, the needs Rosenberg writes about are fundamental to valuing ourselves, and thus living a life of integrity. "In fact, when we do things solely in the spirit of enhancing life [for others AND ourselves], we will find others appreciating us. Their appreciation, however, is only a feedback mechanism confirming that our efforts had the intended effect. The recognition that we have chosen to use our power to serve life and have done so successfully brings us the genuine joy of celebrating ourselves in a way that approval from others can never offer." When we seek to live a life of choice, we contribute positively to the world, and that means contributing positively to others' lives, and the cycle continues forward as others choose to tap into their unique gifts and talents that contribute positively without expectations, simply out of joy of living the life we have the opportunity to live each day. At the core, we are seeking joy, thus contentment, and both can only be found within. To live a life out of obligation, guilt, to avoid pain, to avoid shame, may be seen as a survival mechanism, but don't we want to thrive? When we permit ourselves the freedom to fully seek joy in living - to fulfill our unique needs, it becomes far easier to stop the judgment, comparison, blame, criticism, insults, put-down, and labels. Why? Because we recognize each of these negative and unhelpful behaviors are reactions to living a life void of choice. When we take responsibility for our lives, we take on a weighty task of exploration of our feelings and needs. For so long and in so many cultures, current and past, American and endless others, feelings have been equated to weakness. But human beings have feelings and when we acknowledge them in ourselves, it is far easier to observe them and communicate healthily and helpfully with others to deepen understanding and to discover empathy. Rosenberg shares it is empathy that is often the missing ingredient in frayed relationships - not only an empathy to acknowledge fully and entirely what others are feeling, but to refrain from being empathetic to ourselves. What do we each need? Why do we feel pained after a conversation with a loved one we are "supposed" to have a relationship with? Why do we feel hurt and disconnected when we go about tasks we thought we chose of our own free-will? Everyone around us applauded when we made said decision, but why doesn't it feel right within ourselves? Each of these and many more feelings are what each of us needs to explore to determine how to live a life we love living. Choice is at the heart of living with true contentment, not obligation, not duty, not to avoid guilt, not to avoid punishment. Choose you and let others choose for themselves as well. The journey forward of both individuals will be unknown, but when lived by choosing the path will be fulfilling and full of respect and true love for ourselves and for those we have set free to be who they truly have always been. ~Read Marshall Rosenberg's book Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life Petit Plaisir: —New episode of The Hookup Plan (Plan Coeur), Season 2 - The Lockdown Plan, episode #7 ~The Simple Sophisticate, episode #293 ~Subscribe to The Simple Sophisticate: iTunes | Stitcher | iHeartRadio | YouTube | Spotify ~Note: Some links shared today are affiliates in which upon purchase TSLL receives a small commission. Do this exercise: Close your eyes and picture a life where money didn't matter. If you didn't have to worry about money and are financially abundant. What are you doing in your day? What would that version of you be doing? What is she saying? Who is she hanging out with? 2. Create an action plan! Make a list of things you know you need to do. For example, if you want to become a psychiatrist and open your own practice, you know there are multiple steps to get you there like apply for schools. Think about what the small goals will be to get you to the big prize of opening your own practice, or starting a business, launching a planner, or whatever it is you dream of! 3. Address your fears! Sit down and be like what am I scared of. This is a very important exercise to do because you need to be real with yourself going into something this big. You need to know there are going to be things that come up, there are going to be limiting beliefs. So, you need to be ready to embrace them, handle them, and begin to rewrite the story for each fear. You have to decide you can still do it because your dreams are your dreams for a reason. Lean into your truth. 4. Implement and do not give up! So now that you have done the work and are seeing the big picture start to take messy action. A small part of the implementation was you creating your action plan, you sent the sign to the universe that you are ready. You are showing up for the life you want to manifest. Now it is time to take the steps on your list, figure out how it is possible and do it. Embody the CEO you want to be and call manufacturers or schools to begin your process. The sooner you start to step into who you are meant to be the downloads of your next step or next thing will keep coming. The universe or your higher power, or whatever you want to tall it is ready to guide you to be the best version of yourself. But you have to show up and show that you are ready to take action on the manifestations you dream up. You are meant to do something amazing and have been possibly putting in your back pocket. Save, save, save – that's the retirement mantra. But then do you know how to draw down from your pot of money so that you can enjoy Life Two? Relatively little attention has been devoted to this logical conclusion, also known as decumulation. When you have no idea how long you're going to live, how do you determine the sustainable rate at which to withdraw your money? We sit down with one of the world's pioneers in this field, Moshe Milevsky (finance professor at York University’s Schulich School of Business), describing the sensible and the less than sensible practices he has encountered. Also, you don't have to do this alone – later in the show, we discuss what to say with financial professionals and how to share your Life Two plans with those close to you. This interview was recorded in the summer of 2019.

You don't have to do it alone – setting goals and figuring out how to structure your life for greater satisfaction. We explore how Life Two coaching works and its benefits, both psychological and financial, with retirement coach Jon Glass of 64 PLUS. Later on the show, Don Ezra shares his own experience, with its unexpected emotions, and draws lessons so others can benefit.

It's time to get in touch with our feelings because as we all know, money is deeply tied to our emotions. How does one psychologically prepare for retirement? One of the scariest aspects is how you find a sense of purpose in Life Two, how you’ll fill your time, and how you’ll coordinate activities with your partner. International best-selling author Ernie Zelinski (The Joy of Not Working and How to Retire Happy, Wild, and Free) tells us how to make plans that transform your mindset from fear to eager anticipation. And later in the show, we get back to managing your finances as you approach Life Two.

Once you’ve earned the freedom to retire, what will you do next? What are your plans for retirement? How will you approach preparing to retire so that one day you’ll be happily retired? Well, Don Ezra thinks that the word retirement is obsolete. He believes it’s high time that we reframe how we think about it. In Don’s view what we used to call retirement, is today the beginning of a new second life. He calls it Life Two – life after full-time work. In fact, multiple surveys indicate that the vast majority of people want to continue to work past what used to be seen as the “normal retirement age.” For many people, the desire to work longer is not primarily financially driven. For some, it’s about purpose. When work is a calling in retirement, it’s wise to be thinking about how you’ll be creating a second career – and a second life. Will You Be Happily Retired Someday? Achieving the freedom to retire is not easy. Neither is creating a new second life. It takes a different level of planning and preparing to retire to do that well, both financially and emotionally. Don has written one of the best books on retirement planning: Life Two. Based on Don’s experience, the keys to sound retirement planning lie in education and introspection. And it’s not theoretical for Don. He does not refer to himself with references to his previous titles in an impressive and distinguished career. He’s simply ‘happily retired.’ He describes his experience in transitioning to this second life in retirement as planting a new tree, different from the tree he grew in his years of full-time work. If you want to learn more about how to retire happy and make the most of your freedom to retire, you’ll want to listen to our conversation with Don Ezra. We discuss with Don: What inspired him to write Life Two How Life Two differs from Life One The concept of a “Life’s Abundance Portfolio” Why having the freedom to retire is exciting – but why retirement can be scary – and what to do about that How couples can prepare for Life Two – and stay up to date on what’s most important – as a couple and as individuals Lessons learned in his personal journey Advice on how to prepare for retirement & Life Two ________________________ Bio In Life One, Don Ezra was Co-Chairman , Global Consulting at Russell Investments. He has served on the Executive Committee of the Washington DC-based Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI), and as Chairman of its Research Committee. In 2004, he was awarded the EBRI’s Lillywhite Award “for extraordinary lifetime contributions to Americans’ economic security.” Don is the author of Life Two: How to Get and Enjoy What Used to Be Called Retirement, Happiness: the Best is Yet to Come and several books on pensions and the financial side of retirement. Don joins us from Toronto. ____________________________ Wise Quotes On Life Two: “That’s when I realized that if you think of this as Life Two, Life One is our grown-up working life. So Life Two is what follows. And for most of us, it’s going to be long enough. It’s going to be healthy enough to be a life that we can enjoy. It’s not just an end to Life One, it’s a life in its own right. And so, forget the old concept of retirement. In fact, let’s retire the word. So, I think of Life Two as the best part of life. I think of Life One in fact is just being a very long prologue that finally gives way to the real show – when enjoyment and happiness and fulfillment peak.” On Freedom & Stress “It’s not until we retire or at least stop working full time that we have both the time and the money to truly enjoy all of life. And that gives us freedom. So, I think of Life Two as a full life. I think of it as a mature life rather than an immature one. I think of it is a happy life rather than a stressful one. That’s how I try to reframe retirement and, and given that I go back to the point I was making that it’s ironic – dreading retirement makes us...
How much do I need to save for a comfortable retirement? It's the million dollar question – maybe even a bit more. It depends on a number of factors, making it all the more overwhelming for individuals to tackle retirement saving. We speak to author Fred Vettese (former chief actuary at Morneau Shepell) who has researched and written about what people can do. And later on the show, we discuss getting serious and building your financial base for a good Life Two.
Retirement, or what we call Life Two, is one of life’s biggest expenses, and with people working and living longer, traditional retirement planning is becoming more costly and complicated. Jonathan Clements (former personal finance columnist for The Wall Street Journal) draws on his experience and observations to tell us what goes into a good retirement plan, and later in the show, we break down an individual's five financial stages and determine where you are in your retirement planning.
What does it mean to retire in the 21st century? Pensions and a full-stop retirement are becoming things of the past, and global retirement systems are struggling to keep up with the changing trends. We speak to Chris Battaglia (VP/Group Publisher, Pensions & Investments) and Jeremy Cooper (Chairman, Retirement Income, Challenger Limited) about what needs to be fixed and which countries are doing retirement right. Even as individuals are increasingly left to manage their own financial future, later in the show we explain why retirement, or what we call Life Two, is potentially the peak time of life: the most enjoyable and the most rewarding.
Don Ezra and Common Wealth are excited to introduce LIFE TWO, a new podcast featuring some of the world's best thinkers on retirement. The 10-part pilot series launches on November 13th.

Welcome back to the #1 Investment and Retirement Planning Blog & Podcast in Ireland. Of late our focus has been very much around preparing our finances in advance of, and indeed after we leave full-time employment. Some people call it retirement, other people don't like that term (hear Fin's interview here!). This week, as promised we will explore that big question for many, When can I retire? A few readers got in touch after Blog 118, where we looked at maximising the income you achieve from an ARF. They were asking why not just retire earlier? So here we go! Oh, for those of you that don't like the term 'retirement' I'm delighted to share an alternative! I came work by a US guy, Don Ezra recently. All about preparing for retirement. He calls retirement phase 'Life Two'. He suggests it came about when the accronym for 'Life After Full Time Work' (LAFTWO) was converted into 'Life Two'. I like it! I also like 'Accumulation' phase and 'Spending' phase however if you are anything like many who find their calling in Life Two you may find yourself so busy that you don't have much time for spending! Very Special Episode! Cheryl Richardson Joins Bob Olson to talk about the subject of his new book: creating a magical life. I'm so very excited to announce the release of my new novel, The Magic Mala. And joining me in my studio to celebrate the book's release (and my birthday) is my dear friend, Cheryl Richardson. Cheryl’s a four-time New York Times bestselling author. And because we’re old friends, which you’ll recognize in our chemistry together, and because Cheryl is such a fabulous author and teacher, this episode is a very special treat. Cheryl and I talk about the lessons from the book as well as the extraordinary results people are having who've read it. I call them "Magic Mala Moments." What you realize while reading the book is that we're always communicating with creative intelligence and it's always working in our lives, whether we’re being positive or negative. The mala practice taught in my book serves as a tool to communicate to the universe what you really want in your life. You won’t believe the results. We also discuss the kind of practices Cheryl and I use in our everyday lives that help us stay positive, grateful, and open to receiving good things in our lives. And we discuss this while having a lot of fun and laughs, and while sharing a lot of personal information about ourselves. I think you’re going to be happy you watched or listened. As usual, all the beautiful photography on the video was taken by my wife, Melissa. I would love to know what you thought of today's chat with Cheryl and your reactions to The Magic Mala lessons we shared. And I'm so excited for you to share your Magic Mala Moments after getting a chance to read the book (more on how to do that in an upcoming show)! ~ Bob Olson SHOW NOTES: The Magic Mala: http://www.BobOlson.com On Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0965601919/?tag=ofspiritcom07-20 On Barnes and Noble: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-magic-mala-bob-olson/1126266927 On iTunes iBooks: https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/the-magic-mala/id1228859702?mt=11 On Kobo: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-magic-mala Audiobook is coming very soon! …………………………….. In this first message in our Songs for Life series, Psalm 1 clearly presents a choice in life: the way of wickedness or the way of righteousness.
