Rwanda, Africa's “Land of a Thousand Hills,” has emerged from its tragic past as one of the continent's most remarkable success stories. This small, landlocked nation offers visitors pristine mountains, ancient rainforests, and the rare opportunity to encounter mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Modern, clean, and incredibly organized, Rwanda defies typical African stereotypes – it's the continent's brightest jewel, a true Wakanda, where even plastic bags are banned and environmental consciousness reigns supreme.Love the pod? Today's episode offers a powerful example of courage, peace, and forgiveness. Our story looks back thirty years, to one of the most violent periods in modern history — the genocide against the Tutsi — and to the resilience and wisdom of the Rwandan spirit and heart. On April 6, 1994, beautiful Rwanda, known as the Land of a Thousand Hills, became a hell on Earth. Between April and July 1994, hundreds of thousands of Rwandans were slaughtered in a horrifying frenzy of state-sponsored terror. Freddy Mutanguha, an ethnic Tutsi, was just eighteen years old when the genocide began. Today, Freddy shares the story of his unimaginable losses, the miracle of his survival, and his life's work nurturing peace, forgiveness, and reconciliation in his country and across the world. What does it mean that God owns the cattle on a thousand hills? What is the meaning of Psalm 50:10-11?
Jason talks plenty about pork, but MN has a robust beef industry too. Matt Maier joined him for DeRusha Eats to talk about the state's beef farmers.
My father owns the cattle on a thousand hills, says the Psalm. How wonderful it is to know my father owns it all, I don't own anything. It is not my car, house, job, money, family, not even myself- We are not called to heatless worship and routinely giving away what isn't ours. But to to be thankful, repay my vows, and to acknowledge my dependence on him. God wants the only thing he has given us control over, ourselves- Obedience is what he desires and deserves.

It's a film she's incredibly proud of as it's taken nearly 20 years in the industry to get here. Since then, she's produced and directed a plethora of films for Mzansi Magic, written for Imbewu, and attended Cannes three times. Now she's using that experience to bring her stories to life on the big screen. Enjoy. God calls Israel into judgment because of their false view of sacrifice. Instead of sacrifices teaching them about their dependence on God, they believed the sacrifices could "buy" God off.
June Fair Harris Robinson was born into poverty at Valley View Hospital in Ada, Oklahoma during the late 1950's. June, being the 5th of 8 children was the 1st of her siblings born in a hospital setting. Until 1971 her family lived in an old uninsulated dilapidated shack that had no indoor plumbing. Winters were cold and summers were hot. Government-issued commodities were their primary source for meals during those years of lack. June grew up in the small town of Stonewall, Oklahoma where she attended integrated public schools. June's parents attended segregated schools and both received a 10th grade education. June's father worked as a service station attendant and her mother initially worked as a dishwasher and later a cook. After graduating from high school, June became a 1st generation college student after receiving financial assistance from a generous donor who lived in her hometown. Through God's grace, the trajectory of June's life changed. Statistics had already predicted she wouldn't graduate from high school. June received her Bachelor of Science in Education degree in 1983 from East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma and followed a career path to Wichita, Kansas where she worked with Special Needs students, In 1987, June changed careers and began working for Sedgwick County Department of Corrections at Judge James Riddel Boys Ranch in Goddard, Ks. June found her niche in working with male juvenile offenders. In her years of work it became apparent that her students had taught her so much. She learned compassion and mercy on another level. She learned to think outside the box. She discovered the effectiveness and value of building healthy relationships. June retired in 2016, as Corrections Shift Supervisor. Writing has always been a type of therapy for June. It was something that came natural to her. She began writing her 1st book in 1995 but lacked the confidence to seek out publication. In 2007 she began writing again and became a published author in 2010 after completing Book 1, Varsity Dreams. Varsity Dreams is a children's book for 3rd grade students and above. June's character, Jimmy Jenkins is a gifted basketball player in need of a pair of basketball shoes. His family cannot afford to buy him a pair. The book vividly describes some of the challenges faced by children living in poverty. So often, children living in poverty are left trying to solve the problems of meeting basic needs. In 2020, June completed Cattle on a Thousand Hills which is the sequel to Varsity Dreams. June's character, Jimmy Jenkins continues his journey through a maze of interpretation in Book 2. Through it all he comes to understand that his Varsity Dreams came to fruition through Cattle on a Thousand Hills. June resides in Wichita, Kansas with her husband Ronald Robinson. June's 3 adult children, Lance (Alexandria), Jordan (Marissa) and Lindsay Harris also reside in Wichita along with her seven grandchildren, Mariah, Michael, Lincoln, Londyn, Lane, Mason and Landan Harris.

Nina Iliza is the founder of Heart Of a Thousand Hills (HOTH), an organization with a mission to provide educational opportunities to underprivileged children. The organization began as a passion project and a way to change her own narrative of what it means to be a survivor. While developing the organization, she received her Masters in Nonprofit Management with a concentration in fundraising. She has combined her love for giving back, and her devotion to education into what she hopes to be a path for the future. Heart Of a Thousand Hills started by collecting and delivering school supplies but has now grown to build a school, implement programming and promote a volunteer culture among Rwandan youth. While the organization is still young and always growing, she has enjoyed every bit of the roller-coaster. With a small team, HOTH has been able to stand out as an NGO operated solely by volunteers. The work is hard but the joy received is priceless. Website: https://www.heartofathousandhills.org/ Contact Iliza at: info@heartofathousandhills.org

Thanks again to Albert Lea seeds for making this episode possible. A few announcements — Minnesota is the theme of today’s show. Acres USA will be in Minnesota in December for our annual conference, and one of the reasons — other than the great December weather there — is the amount of trailblazing agriculture that is going on in that region. You can learn more about our event at www.acresusa.com — tickets will go on sale later this spring. But before that, we’ll get into some of that agriculture, and talk to some of the country’s original grassfed beef farmers. Today, we’re going to have two cattlemen on the show to discuss their operations and some current topics, a few of which are creating quite a debate: Matt Maier, with Thousand Hills Cattle in Minnesota, and Will Winter, a teacher of holistic animal medicine and founder of the American Holistic Livestock Association. I met Will at our annual conference a couple years ago, and recognized his trademark cowboy hat and beard. He’s written for our magazine and spoken to our audiences before, and we’re excited to have him on the show today. I met Matt’s team at our conference last year and learned that they had pursued Savory Institute Hub certification, and are — and have been —leading the way with regenerative agriculture. Their cattle were grazing 365 days a year in Minnesota, which is not an easy thing to accomplish, and takes a disciplined system. Will and Matt worked together in Minnesota at Thousand Hills. During our talk, they walked me through the Polar Vortex experience, where temperatures reached -30 on their farm, and their reactions to the Green New Deal, as well as sharing some ideas and inspiration for new cattle farmers. Here’s a video that shows off the environment at Thousand Hills: https://youtu.be/5ZezvrKOxS4

Playlist | Singing the Songs of the Church What’s on your playlist? What are the songs that you could listen to over and over, the ones that make you turn up the volume whenever they come on the radio, the ones you might even sing in the shower? Songs have a way of moving us and shaping us. The church has her own ancient playlist, songs she has been singing throughout the centuries. This ancient playlist is known as “Psalms.” Join us this summer as we listen to these ancient songs, sing them together and allow them to shape us and move us into the future.
