From Harvard Business School to Rural Africa: Nicole Poindexter's Journey to Advance Clean Energy Access

Business for Good Podcast

In this episode we're taking you on a journey to some of the most remote corners of West Africa, where energy access is scarce, and innovation is changing lives. Our guest is Nicole Poindexter, the founder and CEO of Energicity, a company that's bringing clean, reliable solar power to off-grid communities in countries like Sierra Leone, Benin, and Liberia. Nicole and her team are doing something extraordinary: building solar mini-grids that provide electricity to tens of thousands of people who otherwise rely on polluting and expensive energy sources—or have no power at all. And, impressively, Energicity is doing all of this while making a profit, already being an EBITDA-positive company.  In our conversation, Nicole shares how she transitioned from a background in finance—after an Ivy League education—to founding Energicity in 2015, driven by her vision to end energy poverty. We dive into how solar mini-grids are more than just a source of light—they're catalysts for economic growth, education, and health improvements in communities that have often been ignored. Nicole also talks candidly about the challenges of working in rural Africa, from financing to infrastructure to cultural dynamics, and how she tackles these head-on. One part of this conversation that resonated with me and I think will with a lot of founders is when Nicole says she takes to heart the saying: “Those who know how work for those who know why.” So many people see a problem, and because they don't know how to solve it, they don't act. Nicole makes it clear that if you surround yourself with smart people of whom you can ask many questions, combining those who know how with those who know why can really lead to transformational results. So, if you're ready to get inspired by a trailblazer who's proving that business can indeed be a force for good, stay tuned for this enlightening conversation with Nicole Poindexter. Discussed in this episode Nicole was employed at Opower when it IPOed. TechCrunch on Energicity's work. Energicity has raised $10 million so far, and is seeking to raise another $30 million. Nicole recommends reading Atomic Habits and Dare to Lead. She also recommends checking out Entrepreneurs for Impact. Our past episode with African clean energy startup I-G3N. More about Nicole Poindexter From starting her career as investment banker, Nicole Poindexter has had a variety of leadership roles in finance, government, and business. Prior to her founding Energicity Corp, she was an early employee at OPower prior to its successful IPO and subsequent sale to Oracle, founding and growing the business development team. In that role, she brought together the skills of an operator and software product development with sensitivity to energy customer needs delivering USD 10's of millions in revenue for the company. She was inspired to start Energicity Corp both due to her deep seated commitment to developing renewable sources of energy and also her passionate desire to create economic opportunity for some of the world's poorest people through energy access.

Dimitry Gershenson is the CEO and co-founder of Enduring Planet, a fintech platform that offers founder-friendly working capital and financial advisory services to climate startups and SMEs. Prior to Enduring Planet, Dimitry led M&A and served as COO for Rango Wireless, an Enduring Ventures portfolio company. Before that, Dimitry built Meta's Energy Access program, a $15M+ investing initiative that enabled energy access for 3M people and unlocked nearly $500M in additional capital in underserved markets like Kenya and India Beyond his role at Enduring Planet, Dimitry sits on the board of Ecosafi, a Lowercarbon-backed climate startup enabling clean cooking in emerging markets. In this episode, we discuss: ●     What bridge financing is ●     The different financing tools available for climate tech start-ups ●     Why Enduring Planet started offering bookkeeping and fractional CFO services to climate start-ups Key Takeaways: ●     Bridging the Climate Finance Gap: Addressing climate change requires substantial financial investment. We are building things that have never been built before, and solving challenges that have never been solved before. US Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen suggests that achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 necessitates annual investments of approximately $3 trillion. However, in their own study, Moody's states that current funding levels fall significantly short, with a gap of about $2.7 trillion per year projected by 2030. This shortfall hampers efforts to mitigate climate impacts and underscores the need for increased investment from both public and private sectors to build a sustainable future. ●     The Power of a Complementary Co-Founder: Launching a startup demands a diverse set of skills, often too extensive for one person to manage alone. Finding a co-founder with complementary abilities can be crucial to a startup's success. This partnership allows for shared responsibilities, diverse perspectives, and a balanced workload, setting the foundation for a resilient and dynamic business. Also, with the mindset of true collaboration, it's more likely that a leader will share equity equitably across all individuals that are building and contributing to the start-up. ●     Embracing Unexpected Opportunities: In the entrepreneurial journey, unexpected opportunities can arise when least anticipated. A potential partner might agree to collaborate despite previous indications otherwise, or a chance encounter could lead to a pivotal breakthrough. Maintaining an open mindset allows you to recognize and seize these moments of serendipity, turning unforeseen possibilities into tangible successes. Stay open to possibility, stay open to things working out for you, stay open to being delightfully surprised References: ●     Connect with Dimitry on LinkedIn ●     Enduring Planet  ●     World Resources Institute (WRI) ●     Power for All ●     Enduring Ventures ●     Photon Marine ●     Circuit ●     Dollaride ●     Sparkz ●     Blip Energy ●     Project K ●     Kinetix Connect & Share: If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? Dimitry, Enduring Planet Co-Founder, speaks to Green Planet Blue Planet about the fund's support for various projects from software with indirect impacts to planting trees with very explicit impacts. He speaks to the profound impact of tax incentives included in the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act to catalyze transformative decarbonization. Rather than necessitating a complete overhaul of existing economic and energy systems, Dimitry said by altering the economic dynamics, the tax incentive has become one of the most influential pieces of climate legislation in the US, fostering the largest expansion of clean energy investment in the nation's history. While some might have hoped for radical disruption, the government's approach to supporting decarbonization focuses on incentivizing clean energy deployment within the current framework. While it is laudable to have large decarbonization goals,  Dimitry explains that for Enduring Planet, all initiatives are considered, as can be seen in their portfolio case studies. The impact metrics across businesses may be dramatically different, but it's all within their climate finance scope - from water to energy to waste. By design, every dollar they put to work is having an impact. Enduring Planet offers rapid financing without dilution, personal guarantees, or collateral. It is climate focused for impactful teams, big or small, working across mitigation, removal, adaptation, and resilience to address the climate crisis. They provide two products now, Revenue Based Financing and Climate Grant Advances for government backing to be repaid once the funding is received. Join Dimitry and Julian in this discussion of the nature of the work in a new climate economy, “where every business is a climate business.” The two explore the idea of dismantling capitalism and incentives for extractive structures that are misaligned with climate change. Learn more about Dimitry and how he came to his ecological conclusions while working in Honduras with the Peace Corps, addressing questions such as how to restore damaged ecosystems and bring the planet back to a healthy, happy place, only to determine what motivates him is love of people and a desire for equity and accessibility to services and principles of conservation. #About Dimitry Gershenson Dimitry co-founded Enduring Planet, building on his 10+ years of experience across climate tech, operations, and impact investing. Prior to Enduring Planet, Dimitry led M&A and served as COO for Rango Wireless, an Enduring Ventures portfolio company. Before that, Dimitry built Meta's Energy Access program, a $15M+ investing initiative that enabled energy access for 3M people and unlocked nearly $500M in additional capital in underserved markets like Kenya and India. While at Meta, Dimitry also led the development of multiple predictive ML products in the cleantech space and built corporate accelerator programs for impact startups in India and Puerto Rico. Outside of Enduring Planet, Dimitry sits on the board of Ecosafi, a Lower carbon-backed climate startup enabling clean cooking in emerging markets. Dimitry holds an MS in Energy and Resources from UC Berkeley, a BS in Natural Resource Management from Rutgers University. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/julian-guderley/support

With the rapid de-escalation of the cost of solar PV technologies, and the conversations surrounding climate change, coupled with research suggesting climate change will indeed have an adverse impact on the flow, hydrology, and therefore, the overall electricity generation output of Nepali rivers, discussions about the uptake of other-than-hydro renewables have started to pick up momentum. To further complement Nepal's renewable energy potential, by 2030, Nepal has set an ambitious target to expand clean energy generation from approximately 1,400 MW to 15,000 MW, of which 5-10% (70 MW to 1500 MW) will be generated from mini and micro-hydro power, solar, wind and bio-energy. Of this, 5,000 MW is an unconditional target. The remainder is dependent upon the provision of funding by the international community. By 2030, ensure 15% of the total energy demand is supplied from clean energy sources. In today's episode, PEI's Saurab Lama sits with Anjal Niraula, the Chief Executive Officer of Gham Power, a renewable-energy-focused social enterprise based in Kathmandu, Nepal. Anjal is an off-grid solar expert, and he oversees Gham Power's R&D and product strategy – including business development, design, and engineering. His focus is on developing solar microgrids along with productive end-use loads. Anjal was a Chevening scholar at the University of Edinburgh where he studied Energy Systems. He is also a member of the Future Energy Leaders group with the World Energy Council where he works on the Energy Access task force. Saurab and Anjal discuss Nepal's solar industry and its feasibility in Nepal, where Anjal makes a case for a higher uptake of solar electricity within a hydroelectricity-dominated electricity sector. The two discuss the global solar uptake patterns and why Nepal's uptake has not followed similar trends and Nepal's own set renewable energy targets set through its Nationally Determined Contributions. They also discuss some important policy-level issues, including the role of governmental institutions, and the private sector, and evaluate their performance in promoting renewable energy sources. They end the discussion with some technical solutions, including the importance of battery technology and some recommendations for the future of solar energy within the country. Picture a remote island, populated by many small and medium-sized communities. The local economy largely runs on a fishing industry. Children go to school, markets sell food & goods, but two important things are missing: reliable energy access and connectivity. There's no real cell signal in the village of Maybuuho, Philippines. This means that not only do people lack the ability to communicate outside their village, renewable energy solutions like solar-powered mini-grids or Solar Home Systems aren't very easy to use. Without any sort of connectivity, modern off-grid energy companies that are operating today end up de-prioritising "zero connectivity" locations, which exist all around the world. Okra is a technology company that manufactures everything needed to set up what they call a "mesh grid" as a kit, and then sell those kits to  Energy Access companies (like SHS or Mini-Grid companies) around the world. Their latest innovation is called the Cicada WiFi, an open source communications module, that brings WiFi connectivity to remote areas using VSAT technology.Tamara Mahoney from EnAccess and Oscar Aitchison from Okra talk about Cicadas - not the insects, but the chip - today on Open Energy Access. They discuss the impact this technology had not only for the company that participated in their pilot, but also potential impact for the village of Maybuuho, who could be offered Internet As A Service for the first time.  More information: https://enaccess.org/materials/okra-cicada/

In this episode, we talk about the impacts of living through a global energy crisis while living through a climate crisis. Inflation is running at 10% in most major economies, the highest in decades. This is driven primarily by the cost of food and energy. And while most of us are aware of higher prices at the pump and on energy bills, today we focus on the hardest place it is hitting: Africa. Since 2019, 4% of Africans have lost access to affordable energy, undoing a decade of gains.  And with a desire in the Global North to get off of Russian Gas, there is higher demand for gas, and therefore pushing more and more people out of the ability to afford it. This week in response, African Ministers made the case for expanding gas production in Africa, amidst a climate crisis. So that's the setup for this week's discussion - we bring in Rachel Kyte, Dean of the Fletcher School at Tufts University to argue the case on how to move forward out of this complicated situation.
