Joel Primus is an author, speaker, filmmaker and serial entrepreneur. His first success, however, was as a runner, representing Canada at the World Youth Games. His identity as a runner was everything—then he blew up his achilles and that life was over. Trying to fill a void, he hitchhiked across Canada to make a movie—until his camera fell off a cliff. Third time’s a charm? While traveling in Peru, Joel found underwear that was so much better than anything he had worn before. His company Naked was born. Over the course of the next decade, Joel put everything into growing Naked. He raised $10 million and eventually went public, but he also suffered from terrible anxiety and depression. His marriage was on the brink. He knew he needed to make sweeping changes because, as it turned out, he never really stopped running. ”The journey begins with vulnerability. When we don’t allow ourselves to be vulnerable, we don’t allow ourselves to do the work.” –Joel Primus Once Joel stood still and focused on his inner journey, he noticed the same negative belief surfacing: I’m not good enough; I’m not worthy. He realized it framed his decision-making, and it started with his parents’ divorce. So he began questioning his choices, and why he cared what other people thought. As his self-awareness grew, his anxiety and depression lessened their grip. He reconnected with his wife. Listen to my inspiring conversation with Joel as he shares his path to letting go, and the opportunities that have come as a result. He reminds us that everything starts to unfold when you let go of the outcome. Today Joel lives on a farm with his wife and two daughters. His book “Getting Naked” was released in January 2021. Joel and I also touch on another issue that’s really important, and one we covered in depth in episode 5 of the podcast and that’s body image. From talking to Joel, and also from my own experiences and struggles with body image, what our conversation reiterates is that it doesn’t matter whether you are in a smaller, bigger, rounder or leaner body - body image issues can affect everyone - even those you least expect. Today Joel and I go long on all things "Security Dog" related, that his company Fortress K9, brings to the table, like: Training differently than most. Ear protection for dogs? Stabilization training. Dealing with other humans, on walks. The courses and dogs that he offers. Some tasks that his dogs do that surprises other dog handlers. And much much more!
Today Joel hones in on David's story. The Rise of David, The Fall of David, and The Legacy of David
Today Joel talks about God's deliverance of the Isrealites from Egypt and into HIS kingdom. The question: How did they become to know God as deliverer is answered.
Today Joel traveled to Lumsden Saskatchewan to talk with Colin and Meredith Schmidt, the owners and operators of Last Mountain Distillery. They talk about the ups and downs of businesses, how to build a great team and their story of how they got started. Colin & Meredith began their journey on starting Saskatchewan’s first micro distillery in August of 2010. After searching for a unique Saskatchewan spirit and finding none, creating a micro distillery in Saskatchewan seemed like an obvious business choice for the heart of the prairies. Colin Schmidt was raised in Regina, SK and attended Colorado College on a hockey scholarship and was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers. After a short hockey career Colin met Meredith while living in the US and they decided to return to Saskatchewan in 2008. Although Colin and Meredith’s professional backgrounds were in banking and finance, they had been hobby craftsmen since they returned to live in Saskatchewan in 2008. After receiving encouragement and advice from one of Colin’s friends who had successfully opened one of the first micro distilleries in the United States, they were inspired to start Saskatchewan’s first micro distillery out of their home garage. After only a year and a half in business, Last Mountain Distillery expanded and opened its current location on Highway 20 in Lumsden, SK.
In this episode, Marc interviews Dr. Joel Dobbs. Dr. Dobbs is an experienced life sciences executive, with over thirty years of experience in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. He has served in a variety of senior leadership roles in information technology, as well as general management, clinical research, regulatory affairs, post-marketing surveillance, academia, and consulting. Dr. Dobbs has served as a member of top-tier executive teams of dynamic organizations, in startup, rapid-growth, turn-around, merger, integration, and change phases. He currently serves as the Executive-in-Residence at the University of Alabama Birmingham's Collat School of Business, where he also directs the school's office of innovation and entrepreneurship, teaches, and works with entrepreneurs within the UAB environment and the greater Birmingham business community to help them develop and grow their business. He is also the CEO of the Compass Talent Management Group, LLC, a consulting firm that assists organizations with the identification and development of key talent with designing organization strategies and structures to maximize their ability to compete in the business world of today and tomorrow. Marc and Joel discuss several topics, including Joel’s intentionally varied first half of his life, some of the triggers that started his pursuit of goals for the second half of his life, and how giving back through mentoring, from his extensive experience, is so gratifying. Key Takeaways: [:54] Marc welcomes you to episode 75 of the Repurpose Your Career podcast. 75 episodes make a year-and-a-half. Marc invites you to share this episode with like-minded souls. Please subscribe wherever you listen to this podcast, share it on social media, and tell your neighbors and colleagues. [1:39] Next week, Marc will team up with Mark Anthony Dyson of The Voice of Jobseekers podcast for a Q&A episode to answer some listener questions. [1:52] This week’s episode is from the archives. It is an encore interview of Dr. Joel Dobbs. Dr. Dobbs was Marc’s first interview with a person who had made a career pivot in the second half of life. It was one of the best stories because Dr. Dobbs planned out his transition. Marc hopes you enjoy this episode! [2:15] Marc welcomes Dr. Joel Dobbs. [2:40] Joel majored in Chemistry, went to pharmacy school, and got a doctorate. He followed a purposefully varied career path, in three phases, until he retired five years ago. He was with GlaxoSmithKline when it was just Glaxo. In his time there it went from a startup to $3.5 billion a year. He helped the various business units develop.[6:34] Another company recruited him and he spent the last 15 years of his career as a CIO — a completely unplanned path — until he retired five years ago. That was the first half of his career. Marc calls this a portfolio career or “a lot of different stuff.” [7:44] Today Joel is a business school professor at UAB Collat School of Business. He also runs a leadership consulting business, teaching from the multitude of mistakes he has made over the first half of his life. He finds it tremendously gratifying. [9:16] In his late 40s, Joel started considering his life’s impact. Around 50, he read Halftime: Moving from Success to Significance, by Bob Buford, and it set his path. [11:11] The halftime of your life is a period to ask: how do I turn the second half of my life into one that leverages my success, but focuses on significance? [11:42] Joel began really thinking about what did he want to do next? Was his ladder of success leaning against the wrong building? [13:52] Joel was very interested in his company’s offer of a voluntary retirement when they extended it to executives. He talks about consulting work he did, and other companies that recruited him. He wrote the job description for one of them. He also attended The Halftime Institute, which changed his view of life. [16:00] Joel put together in a notebook his plan for the second half of his life. He looked for opportunities to test concepts about working. [21:16] Marc comments on how Joel drove his career agenda. He knew when to move on and he left, always with the goal in mind. [22:03] If you know what you want to do, and you're able to answer that clearly, concisely, and decisively, you'd be surprised how often you get to do that. [22:19] Spend time thinking about the perfect life and writing it down. That very act sensitizes you to opportunity. [22:54] When Joel checked his ‘perfect life’ list after years, how much had he achieved? [24:45] Intentional achievement takes clarity. Usually, clarity does not come overnight. [26:50] Marc’s final thoughts: Dr. Dobbs was very purposeful in planning out his second half of life. [28:11] Marc invites you to check back next week when Mark Anthony Dyson and Marc answer listener questions. "Leverage faith over doubt. Those praying over me had an inch more faith than they did doubt." Joel Boggess is the bestselling author of Finding Your Voice, host of the incredibly popular podcast the ReLaunch Show, and a motivational speaker bringing his message of never giving up and using action in the face of fear to his audience. At the age of 5, Joel suffered a devastating accident; falling 30 feet resulted in a tremendous amount of blood loss and a fractured skull, and Joel spent more than four weeks in a coma. In an instant, Joel's life went from "happy-go-lucky" to an immense daily struggle and a long road to recovery. The injury left him with hearing problems and difficulty with memory, yet it taught Joel that some lessons are learned on the playground, the boardroom, or even a recovery room. Joel's insights into how action can be the greatest weapon to conquering fear will motivate you and inspire you to never back down. Today Joel shares how one action can make life better. SHOW NOTES: Joel is the author of Finding Your Voice He started on the radio 25 years ago. He said the transition to podcasting was a "no-brainer." His ReLaunch Show podcast has over 1.7 million downloads. At the age of 5 in San Antonio, Texas, Joel drifted away from his group and climbed up what he thought was monkey bars; it was actually a train bridge. He fell 30 feet to the rocks below. The paramedics were unable to find a vein because he had lost so much blood. He had a triple skull fracture resulting in a four-week coma. His parents were told, "don't expect Joel to live a normal life." "Faith doesn't grow in a vacuum" In 2017, Joel launched his professional speaking career. You can listen to Joel's Podcast here. JOEL BOGGESS'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? The Bible, particularly The Book of Proverbs. Also, The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Miller Peale. 2. Tomorrow you discover your wealthy uncle shockingly dies at the age of 103; leaving you millions. What would you do with it? After everyone is taken care of- wife, parents, in-laws- I would do something for dog rescue. My wife and I have always had dogs. Perhaps buy a property and make a facility for dogs. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? One grandfather sitting on each side of me. Both my grandfathers have passed. I didn't get as much information from them that I needed to. 5. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? Joe Callaway gave me this information four or five years ago; he said, "don't be cute, be clear." 6. Looking back, what advice would you give yourself at age 20? Put the beer down. Drinking was something that I leaned on a lot. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? Joel was a guy who just wouldn't give up. *** If you enjoyed today’s episode: Subscribe (automatically get new episodes), rate & review (help spread the word!) this podcast wherever you get your podcasts. He currently serves as the Executive-in-Residence at the University of Alabama Birmingham's Colatt School of Business, where he also directs the school's office of innovation and entrepreneurship, teaches, and works with entrepreneurs within the UAB environment and the greater Birmingham business community to help them develop and grow their business. Key Takeaways: [2:52] Joel majored in Chemistry, went to pharmacy school, and got a doctorate. He followed a purposefully varied career path, until he retired five years ago. [8:03] Today Joel is a business school professor at UAB Colatt School of Business. He also runs a leadership consulting business, teaching from the multitude of mistakes he has made over the first half of his life. He finds it tremendously gratifying. [9:35] In his late 40s, Joel started considering his life’s impact. Around 50, he read Halftime: Moving from Success to Significance, by Bob Buford, and it set his path. [11:28] Halftime is a period to ask: how do I turn the second half of my life into one that leverages my success, but focuses on significance? [12:00] Joel began really thinking about what did he want to do next? Was his ladder of success leaning against the wrong building? [14:25] What did Joel think about his company’s offer of a voluntary retirement? [16:59] What areas of focus did Joel put in his plan for the second half of his life? [22:40] Marc comments on how Joel drove his career agenda. He knew when to move on, and he left, always with the goal in mind. [23:35] If you know what you want to do, and you're able to answer that question clearly, concisely, and decisively, you'd be surprised how often you get to do that. [24:13] Spend time thinking about the perfect life and writing it down. That very act sensitizes you to opportunity. [24:22] When Joel checked his perfect life list after years, how much had he achieved? [26:22] Intentional achievement takes clarity. Usually, clarity does not come overnight. Today Joel and Dave discuss how vitally important prayer is in the life of a Christian, and we look at the example Jesus taught us in Mark 1.
Today Joel and I are tackling a subject that is often discussed but never, it seems, resolved. That is the question of alcohol. I’ve found this to be a hot topic where ever I’ve been because, on the one hand most see the dangers of alcohol and on the other there is no direct prohibition against it. So what are was a believers to think? Part of the problem, I think, is the inability of many to ask the right questions. If you ask the right questions, there is no guarantee that you’ll arrive at the right answers, but if you ask the wrong ones, then it’s nearly certain that you’ll be misled. So Joel and I approach this subject with the prayer that we’ll not only ask the right questions, but also draw conclusions strictly from the word of God so that may follow along and examine the evidence for yourself. So if you have ever wondered about this topic, or know someone who has (and by the way, that’s nearly all of us) then stay tuned for this lively discussion.
Today Joel and I issue an apology. That’s right, an apology. Of course, what we mean by that and what you might be thinking are two very different things. Like all languages, English has words do double, triple, quadruple duty and more. The same is true of the word apology. It can mean an admission of error or an expression of regret. Or it could be used to describe a poor substitute for something, as in “he is a poor apology for an actor.” But the word has at least one other meaning as well. It can be used to express a formal justification for something. So an apology in this case would be a defense of our podcast. IOW, why is it that we feel to publish this podcast at all? And the answer lies in our ability or lack of it to know things as they really are apart from God’s revelation. Now in making this apology or defense of our conversations, Joel and I have to discuss some philosophy. But don’t let that word scare you off. I think you’ll find our treatment of some of our fundamental presuppositions to be easily attainable. So keep listening for a discussion that deals with our whole reason for publishing, our presuppositions, how it affects what conclusions we draw, and why we feel you need to share these basic assumptions as well.
Today Joel and I address the unhappy topic of the disaster in Haiti. As with any natural disaster, there has been much public speculation trying to answer the question, "Why?" We as humans have an inherent need to understand our world. In many ways, this is positive. But what do we do when the unexplainable comes along. Oh certainly, geologists can provide technical, materialistic answers as to the physical causes of the earthquake. But ultimately that leaves us empty. Because God has created us as both material and immaterial beings, a simple materialistic answer only satisfies part of us. Ultimately we want to know, "Where was God in all this?" Was this really the wrath of Gaia or a result of a pact with the Devil? Stay tuned as Joel and I disuse the biblical evidence about what can and can't be known.
