As a 9-year-old, Missouri native John O'Leary was nearly killed while playing with fire. Burned on 100 percent of his body with 89 percent covered in third-degree burns, John was not expected to live the first night. But then something happened, call it a miracle. Through the power of countless people all striving to keep John alive, not to mention the well wishes from near and far, including President Ronald Reagan, Pope John Paul II, sports announcer Jack Buck, NHL star Gino Cavallini and the entire St. Louis Blues hockey team, John pulled through. But that's just John's origin story. John survived, but he felt lost trying to fit in. Throughout his youth, he would try to be like everyone else by taking big risks, whether physical feats, drinking, or other extreme behavior. "Anything someone else would do I would do even bigger and better to prove that I was ordinary," he said. "I wasn't chiseled, I was bandaged. I was just raft with lies and a mask." At age 28 while working construction, John was asked to share the story of how he was burned — and he said "yes" for the first time. So, he spoke to a Girl Scout troop of three. "I did a lousy job. I was not even paid with a box of Samoas," he joked. But one of the girl's fathers asked John to speak at his Rotary Club. That grew to another speaking gig and then more and more speaking engagements, not to mention two books, including the Number 1 bestseller, "On Fire, The Seven Choices to Ignite a Radically Inspired Life," which has sold 250,000 copies and been translated into 12 languages. "I'm not afraid of the scars anymore," John said. "By saying 'yes' to others, I began to realize the dignity of my own story." Over the years, John has spoken publicly 2,500 times and reached several million people to reveal "what happens when we allow ourselves to be used for something bigger than ourselves." I am so inspired by John, not only because of the great baseball stories he shares about Jack Buck and the dozens of signed baseballs he received, but also because John embodies the principles of faith, healing, and dedication to purpose. John shares his story and the lessons he's learned in this week's episode of Chiseled. If you'd like to reach John, you can do so on one of his two websites, JohnOLearyInspires.com and readinawe.com, which will also give you the opportunity to take the 21-day challenge to spark inspiration, meaning, and joy. Check it out and enjoy this week's podcast.
When John O'Leary was a nine-year-old boy, he was burned on 100% of his body. He was in his garage playing with matches and gasoline—just like he'd had seen the older boys on his block do. A fire exploded, consuming the garage, sending him flying back against the wall and turning his whole world upside down. He talks with Larry & Rebecca about how he was given 1% chance to live. Now, 36-years later, John is living an inspired life. He has two national best-selling books “On Fire” and “In Awe.” he's a podcast host, an in-demand international speaker and is someone who intimately understands the impact that Parkinson's can have on a family. Today, Catherine shares her evidence-backed resources to help others design lives in which they control their technology, rather than the other way around—with the ultimate goal of increasing happiness, productivity, creativity, health and wellbeing. “You can easily tell the character of a man by how he treats those who can do nothing for him.” – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Years ago, I ran a small construction company. Continuously running material, picking up tools, and dropping lumber, I spent significant time in a truck with my General Contractor, Harold Stewart. Working together for almost a decade, Harold certainly taught me much about framing, wiring, plumbing and painting. The greatest lesson, though, was the power of consistent generosity. My friends, there are so many examples of selfish people, tragic events and senseless violence today. In a world as broken as ours we often wonder what we can do to make a difference. The example my friend- my brother- Harold models is a simple solution to the profound challenges we face today: Love people. Choose to be kind to the one in front of you. Choose to invest in relationships for the long term. And choose to be generous to those who can't repay it. It may not change the entire world, but unquestionably it will change the life of the one you serve. And perhaps that's how we begin making the actual change the world longs for today. “In our own woundedness, we can become sources of life for others.” – Henri J.M. Nouwen For more than a decade I've worked with the FOCUS Marines Foundation. This organization hosts struggling veterans for week-long retreats designed to provide support for complex physical and emotional issues related to military service. On this Memorial Day, I share the story of how the simple act cooking a meal can come to mean so much more. For nearly a decade, four military moms - all of whose lives have been impacted by veteran suicide - pour their hearts into a homemade meal for groups of veterans seeking support for the complex and often traumatic emotional burdens resulting from deployment. I'm honored to share a story of not just surviving impossible odds but thriving in a world that is too often caught up with how we look on the outside rather than seeing that our true value is within. When Kechi Okwuchi was 16 years old, she was one of just two survivors of a devastating plane crash that killed more than 100 people, many of them her classmates. Spending months in hospital recovering from the third-degree burns that covered more than 65% of her body, Kechi learned the power of perseverance, unrelenting faith and music's profound ability to heal. With courage, honesty and wit, Kechi shares her journey of healing, her fortitude in becoming a finalist on America's Got Talent and her boldness in choosing to not be defined by her scars. This conversation will give you the hope, strength and boldness to face life's challenges directly. Learn more about the Live Inspired Podcast at JohnOLearyInspires.com.
Kiana Clay is the first adaptive female motocross racer, top-ranked para-snowboarder and 2026 Paralympic hopeful. At 12 years old, Kiana suffered a traumatic brachial plexus injury on a motocross practice run that left her right arm paralyzed. While recovering from this accident, she was hit by a drunk driver, reversing any strength she was recovering and leaving her dominant arm permanently paralyzed. Although these circumstances certainly changed her life, Kiana is not letting them define her. Today, Kiana shares how she learned to accept her body, her struggle with depression, how she's learned to trust God and what led to her recent decision to have her injured arm amputated. This conversation is a reminder that you can't always choose the path you walk (or race!) in life, but you can always choose the manner in which you walk (or race!) it. What would you do if you knew today was your last? As a nine-year-old, this wasn't just a hypothetical question to consider, but a reality I faced daily. Because of my weakened condition, the additional stress of surgery and blood loss presented the very real prospect that the next surgery could be my last. With this in mind, my parents would make the evening before surgeries extremely special. They'd bring me a gift, my siblings would visit, we'd eat pizza, down milkshakes, and stay up late. We'd do our very best to ignore the painful reality before us. The focus was on me. That's how I spent my nights when I thought they might be my last. How would you want to spend yours? How do you respond when tragedy strikes? As we face storms in life, we have a choice. We can choose anger, yell about it, and remain negative about what happened and all we've lost. Or we can choose to accept it, make the best of it, grow from it and realize that in spite of those unwanted changes that the best of life remains in front of us. "Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does." -William James As we race through this day, and read about tragedies overseas, challenges in our nation, difficulties in our region, and feel discouragement that there is little we can do to influence positive change, be reminded that your one life is a sacred gift. While big numbers might grab headlines, the most important number recognizes that what you do matters, that the words you speak influence, that the dreams you cast impact the path you take, and that while your road forward may be difficult, your best is yet to come. Let's act as if what we do makes a difference. Let's remember that indeed it does. And today, let's choose to not just read about it, but to act like it. John O’Leary is a thought leader, a world-renowned speaker, and best-selling author of http://johnolearyinspires.com/onfire2/ (“On Fire”) and http://readinawe.com (“In Awe.”) When he was a kid, he burned himself really badly—he suffered burns on 100 percent of his body. Doctors gave him a 1 percent chance of survival. And yet he survived. Not without some issues. He spent months in the hospital, he had numerous surgeries, his fingers were amputated—all of this around his 10th birthday. But he survived, and he persevered. This has been a wildly difficult year for almost anybody, but we can all move forward with a sense of gratitude and awe—but don’t forget the lessons that this time has taught us. What you will learn: The voice you follow influences who you become How belief can change your life The pain of today is the lesson for the future Why you should pour into others Staying generous in challenging times Why you should lead at home Good begets good Quotes: “It’s one of the reasons why the voice you follow is so important, because it’s going to influence who you become.” – John O’Leary “What you believe eventually will become your life.” – John O’Leary “Just give yourself permission to be sad, and upset, mad from time to time.” – John O’Leary “We can forget everything we learned, which is one way to go forward, or we can become far better versions of ourselves because of the pain we’re going through today.” – John O’Leary “What we have is intended not to be selfishly used just for our own benefit, but ultimately poured out into those around us.” – John O’Leary “You’re not just called to be joyful when you’re on top of the world, you’re called to be joyful when you feel like you’re beat down by it.” – John O’Leary “Good begets good.” – John O’Leary “Raise the sail high… and you have to almost create your own wind sometimes.”- Derrick Kinney “If we don’t lead at home, they’re going to think that how many followers they have, they’re going to think only the grades they get in school, only the teams they make on the weekends, that’s the stuff that matters. Let me clarify the title of this episode, that it’s from a place of peace and abundance. It’s not from an exasperated place of “Well, what more can I do?!” But it’s brought to us from a place of care and love, and to use that word again, abundance. Wouldn’t you like to be at a place of wholeness and gratitude where you can readily and eagerly ask, “What more can I do?” John O’Leary is not just back for my Habits show, this is in many ways a Part Two from our initial conversation in episode 815 where we discussed the childlike qualities John shares in his new book, IN AWE: Rediscover Your Childlike Wonder to Unleash Inspiration, Meaning + Joy.” This is my Habits episode with John and he shares his gratitude and joy in asking just that, “What more can I do!” You will be inspired, not burdened. I also take us into an issue I meant to in our previous episode. Something deep many of you will want to hear. At age nine John was horrifically burned and had third degree burns on more than 87% of his body. After examining him a doctor bluntly told his parents, “If John were a horse, I’d shoot him.” John was sitting right there. Can you imagine being given this prognosis and devaluation of your life? But what you’ll want to hear is...what happened next. It’s in this episode. John O’Leary is such an inspiring human. To have lived life as he has is simply miraculous. When John was young he had 3rd degree burns upon 100% of his body. It is statistically impossible for him to be alive and thriving today. He didn’t set out to be in the spotlight, it was actually the opposite, he strived to be as normal and unremarkable as possible to fit in with everyone else. Until his parents told their story, thus sharing John’s incredible story with the world. He then realized his story was important and impactful to the lives of others. Today, John is one of the world’s leading motivational speakers. It is my honor and privilege to share his story with you today.
If you've ever struggled, had self-doubt, felt trapped, at a dead-end, or like your life wasn't igniting, then do we have the show for you. Today I'll be talking with John O'Leary, one of my all-time heroes, both him and his mom, though I just heard about him a few weeks ago. He is the author of the future New York Times Best-Seller, "On Fire: The 7 Choices to Ignite a Radically Inspired Life", and one of the most inspirational people I have ever had the pleasure to have on the show. Today we'll talk about John's miraculous journey, one that should have killed him, and instead helped mold him into the person he is today. We'll talk about going through our own fires in life, flipping the ignition, learning to burn, and out of the fire, creating something more beautiful than we ever could have imagined. That plus we'll talk about the world's greatest mom, accumulating baseballs, Phra Phuttha Maha Suwan Patimakon and what that means, and why in the world, you'd want someone to get in a hockey brawl for you. Key Points Discussed: What is a milkshake promise? What happened to John when he was 9. How the experience became a true blessing in John's life. How his older brother Jim changed and became a state hero (lifesaver of the year for Missouri) How his sisters Amy and Sarah became true hero's as well. Why he asked his sister for a knife so he could kill himself How his seven-year-old sister risked her life (3 times!) to save her brother John. What his mom told him he credits with saving his life What his mom says when he asks if he's going to die How do we light our internal flame? What we can learn from Robin Williams. How do we turn our lives around? What you can do to ensure that tomorrow is better than today Journals ‘why me' in the morning and in the evening ‘what can I do to ensure that tomorrow is even better than today? What Big Roy had to do to him, to keep the scars from pulling him into the fetal position How do you become extraordinary??? “We have to forget everything we've learned and realize we are BORN extraordinary!!!” The importance of asking ‘why do you choose to thrive?” Why his story with his Dad, Denny will be a second book. Who was Glenn Cunningham – and how did he help hundreds if not thousands of kids. Can you tell us about the announcer Jack Buck, the voice of the Cardinals? How John O'Leary day at the ballpark took place How you can make a huge difference in someone else's life – simply! How Gino Cavallini got in a hockey brawl on John's behalf. Why he wanted his book to be a guide to waking up from Accidental life. Additional Resources: www.JohnOlearyInspires.com ……. I'm really grateful for all of the guests that come on our show, but the individual that you're about to hear today is somebody that I have been really excited about, and trying to get on this show for over two years. I'm so honored to have him with us today.John O'Leary is a #1 national bestselling author and speaker. He inspires over 75,000 people at over 100 events each year. He speaks to companies and organizations across industries such as sales, healthcare, business safety, marketing, financial services, faith, education, and insurance. One of the things that John has also done is created his first book, On Fire: The 7 Choices to Ignite a Radically Inspired Life. This was an instant #1 bestseller. Over 120,000 copies have been sold, and it's been translated into twelve languages. His Live Inspired podcast ranks in the top 20 on iTunes, and his online community is over 200,000 strong. You'll notice that I didn't mention anything about John's background within this introduction; that's because his story is so powerful that I can't wait for you to hear it yourself from him. “Discover what your life is ultimately about, and what really matters, and then you encourage and guide and shepherd as many other people as possible to climb, to rise, and to cross that bridge with you.” John's major tip to radically improve your life: shift from being a victim to being a victor. Ask yourself this question every morning: “why me?” Instead of asking it as a victim to the circumstance, ask it as a victor over it, and it will influence the way you view your life . It will transform what you think, how you feel, the actions you take, and the results you get. The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway You are worthy. Your life, your profession, your retirement - you are worthy. Start there. Act like it. You have a future that is even bigger and better than you can fathom right now. Open your eyes, your mind, and your heart a little bit more to that possibility. Have a little bit of faith. Children have it naturally, and we start to lose it. Grab onto that possibility that is robustly and vibrantly still present within you and in front of you. Be intentional. Ask questions like, “why me,” in the morning, before you start your day. Ask a question like, “what more can I do,” at the end of each day to make tomorrow even better than today. Lastly: have a mission that guides you forward toward something bigger than yourself. With a compelling enough “why,” not only can you move through fire, but you can climb mountains, you can overcome the insurmountable, and you can free countless individuals to do likewise in their own lives. -- Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. Brené Brown, 4x New York Times bestselling author, researcher, Oprah's Super Soul Sunday favorite and top-5 TED Talk presenter of all time, joins us today! We'll talk about her new book Dare to Lead. Share tips to become better leaders. Identify what might be holding us back. And hear the vulnerability expert herself share vulnerably about her "big, rowdy Texas" family + life. Join us to live (and lead!) inspired with one of my very favorite authors. Show Notes: Watch Brené Brown's TED talk on vulnerability here. Brené studies courage, vulnerability, shame, empathy + what transformational leaders will need in the future. "I was raised with a very Texas sensibility. I had to be brave and wasn't allowed to be vulnerable. Now, years and 400,000 pieces of data later, I know there is not courage without vulnerability." "You can't write a new ending to a story that you have not owned." You know what is harder than not fitting in at school? Not fitting in at home. True belonging never requires you to change who you are. It requires you to be who you are. We can never experience a sense of belonging that is greater than our sense of self-worth and courage to stand alone because sometimes we have to stand alone. Even at fortune 10 companies, without exception, Brené hears that one of the hardest things about work is feeling like you don't belong. In the absence of belonging, we show up in ways that are outside of our normal values. My kids don't need me to apologize for working. They need to see me be strong and contribute and do something I love and then they need me to be present when I am home. 90% of "balancing it all" is having the right partner, one that shines when you shine. Brené's marriage hack: Instead of thinking, "it should be 50/50" a solid partnership is one where, when you have 20%, they can cough up 80%. Share how much you have + ask how much your partner has. If you can't get to 100% together, you have to have kindness, patience, grace with each other to make it through. If I feel nauseous when I'm done, I probably did a good job. Vulnerability is courage. To opt out of difficult conversations around gender, race, or class, because you can't do it perfectly or be comfortable is the definition of privilege. I'd rather contribute and be criticized then play it safe. Show Notes on Brené Brown's new Book: Dare to Lead Get a copy of Brene's new book Dare to Lead and additional resources for it here. We asked all the leaders we interviewed: What is the future of leadership? What scares you the most about not being able to find new leaders? What is missing? From family-owned, to starts-ups to fortune-10 companies we heard: "We need more courage in our leaders." We asked "What do you see as a barrier to courage?" In the book we share 10 barriers to leadership. Examples: (1) unwillingness or inability to have tough conversations (2) blaming instead of accountability. The biggest barrier to courageous leadership is self-protection, the way we armor up. You can't lead from an armored place. If you can't do hard, real and vulnerable you cannot lead in the future. What doesn't need to be vulnerable and human will be done by machines. When we are unsure how we are contributing/don't see meaningfulness in our contribution, we start hustling for our work. We over emphasize our importance... and hustle to make sure people think we are worthy. Tip: Make sure you have conversations and acknowledge where your employees are adding value. Ask where they see themselves adding value. There is nothing worse than the behaviors that show up when people don't know. They stop being learners + start being knowers... put more emphasis on being right than doing something right... on being important v. doing important work. If you see some of these tendencies in yourself, it's a sign you're not clear on your value. The biggest sign of confidence is curiosity; when we know our value, we don't have to know everything. When we aren't confident, we: Prove, please, perfect, poll. How do you pivot from negativity to hope and courage? I give myself permission to complain with perspective. Once I do this, I move into practicing gratitude, because the people who have the most capacity for joy are the most grateful. BRENE BROWN'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? The Alchemist because I always go back to it. My main takeaway: when you are on the right path, the universe conspires to help you. 2. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? Photos and the crosses I had made out of the my kids' baby cribs. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? Maya Angelou. 5. What is the best advice you've ever received? When we know better we do better. 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? You don't have to act so tough, it's okay to be afraid. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. Joe DeLoss is the founder of Hot Chicken Takeover, a Nashville-style, hot chicken restaurant chain based out of Ohio. What's more inspiring than delicious fried chicken? The mission behind the chicken and the resulting success and growth the company is enjoying. Joe will share how his competitive advantage (what he calls fair 'chance employment') is leading Hot Chicken Takeover to outperform its competitors in productivity 2 to 1. Join me and life-long entrepreneur Joe DeLoss to get inspired and to get new ideas to grow your business, life and relationships. SHOW NOTES: "How can we sustainably tackle problems in our community through entrepreneurship?" Meaningful employment = building positive job experiences for people who probably haven't had many due to homelessness, poor work history, incarceration, criminal record. One in 3 Americans have a criminal record from misdemeanor to felony. "The work we do isn't charitable. We hire really high character, high integrity people (who have been looked over by traditional employers) and have made our restaurant best in class." "Our team members are proving that their futures are bright and look much different than the past so many others hold them to." Turnover is 40% or less. We're performing 2 to 3 times better in terms of employee turnover + productivity in our segment. Love and community are disruptive for everybody and have been taken out of most environments. As an employer, these are key elements for us and it makes a difference for the community of employees and customers. "Challenge and adversity is part of life, but suffering is optional." "If you can reflect, empathize and lead with love instead of judgement you will start to understand that a lot can be done. You have that choice everyday. Take it. Lead with love, it will be more disruptive than any technology or application we will ever have." Hear more inspired dialogue around meaningful employment, check out Ep. 92 Ex-Felons to Farmers, highlighting Ironbound Hard Cider. JOE DELOSS LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? Walden by Henry David Thoreau. Everytime I read it I find some peace and contentment. The idea of seeking and exploring a different way of living inspired me to take the reigns of what my life will look like. A life of exploration, understanding and reflection is the basis of growth. 2. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? Creativity and freedom from ego is really magical. Battling with my judgements of myself constrains me. The more I can be present, love and empathize with the world the way children do feels boundless. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? Nothing, if you press me I'll go straight tactical: My iPhone. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? I want mountains not beach! My wife, Lisa. Every meaningful conversation we have opens me up and gives me a different perspective. 5. What is the best advice you've ever received? As a leader, instead of answering the question, ask the question back. If you have the right community around you, they'll have the right answer. It is the most freeing thing. 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Slow down and be present. Make decision for the moment you are in not the moment you want to be in. In my 20s, I escaped to my future a lot. It damaged relationships, because it is not the place to be. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? He was empathetic, saw and communicated the value that everybody has. *** If you enjoyed today’s episode: Subscribe, rate & review wherever you get your podcasts. See you here next Thursday! Suicide Prevention Awareness Month is September. Join the conversation, get involved + support at Suicide Prevention Lifeline or National Alliance on Mental Health. Goal of his book was to show that even in an idyllic family, mental illness can rear its head and take a family member. "I felt stuff strongly." Adam Cayton-Holland on growing up with anxiety. Getting his start in comedy, Adam did stand up in secret for 6 months. When he finally invited his friends, he bombed + had to figure out how to get back up on stage after bombing. It's a a scary thing. Mental illness can come snatch a person away. When you have this one idea of life and then what truly matters is [taken from you] it is shocking, it is like the whole access of your being shifts. "People work on their physical health and we pat them on the back. It should be the same for people working on their mental health. We should say, "Hey good for you! Going to a therapist... Bring it into the light. You don't have to be ashamed of feeling it or your family member who is feeling it." Continue the Suicide Prevention Awareness conversation with Ep. #46. Loneliness epidemic. Did you know we're currently experiencing this? A recent Harvard study found that 1 in 4 Americans feel they have no one to confide in. So, if you feel lonely or like you're lacking something, you are (ironically...) not alone.Today's episode can help. Radha Agrawal shares simple tools from her new book, BELONG: Find your people, create your community & live a more connected life. My friend, the Live Inspired community is absolutely a place where you belong. My hope is that today's episode helps you strengthen the community where you live, too. NOTES: Check out these recent articles about the loneliness epidemic: New York Times, Washington Post. Get a copy of Radha's new BELONG book. Meaningful relationships are the key to a healthy, happy life. Isolation is as detrimental to your health as being an alcoholic; twice as detrimental as obesity, according to the same study noted above. Learn more about Radha Agrawal on her site radhaagrawal.com. The cornerstone of belonging is participating. Don't just be a bystander. Begin architecting your community: Ask yourself: Who am I and what do I care about? Write down the qualities you're looking for in a friend. Write down the qualities you do not want your friend to have. Realize you need to have the qualities you're seeking (i.e. less judgmental, listen well). Be gently self-aware of how you're showing up. Begin with "exploratory" phase (try new things, show up at new events, observe). Move into "participatory" phase: Which events would you like to go back to and push yourself to participate, volunteer, strike up real conversation? Stop asking questions like "what do you do." Ask bigger questions: What are you most excited about? What's a moment when you were most afraid? Be patient in the process. It takes 80 hours to call someone a friend. Prioritize this. ALL of our issues ladder down to one thing: NOT belonging. It's exhausting to hang out with people who don't get you. Take the time to find community members who fill up your tank. Sometimes, the more successful you are the more at arms length you are from people. It can be lonely on top. We're often part of a community because we're born into it. Cultivate a sense of belonging; feeling of "I'm home. I'm happy." Want to get started making new friends? Listen to Ep. #87, Mel Robbins' 5-second rule will hold you accountable to getting out of your comfort zone + making new friends. If you like this podcast, you will love Live Inspired IN STUDIO. What is the best book you’ve ever read? Sapiens, by Yuval Harari. And a children’s book by Dallas Clayton, An Awesome Book. 2. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? I wish I was less combative and a better listener instead of beating my own drum. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? A video that my partner made of our engagement. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? Sacagawea! She helped Lewis and Clark get across harrowing parts of the country while pregnant. I'd ask her what it takes to be such an incredible explorer. 5. What is the best advice you've ever received? Choose your friends wisely. You're as good as the 5 closest and the sum of all the friends you keep. Pick your friends and nurture them. 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Stop trying to be so cool and relevant. This is your time to discover who you are. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. Amy Jo Martin’s company Digital Royalty was wildly successful with partners like Zappos and NBA all-star “Shaq.” She seemed to be on top of the world, when she realized she had a “purpose problem.” Amy Jo left the business to move into nature and reset. Now, she journals at home in the woods 15 miles outside of Mount Rushmore. She’s again serving as an entrepreneur, angel investor + “the third most powerful woman on Twitter,” but today she’s got her purpose in place. Join us to hear Amy Jo’s story, see how to choose significance over success and ultimately live more inspired. SHOW NOTES: I attribute a lot of things that have gone well in my life to being comfortable with getting uncomfortable, adapting, getting curious + having an addiction to change. "Amy Jo, come down to the [Phoenix Suns] locker room now! Shaq wants to Tweet and no one knows how but you." It's amazing what happens when we stop looking for permission. When I was 30, in a room consulting billionaires, I had a trick. I painted my nails red. It was a trigger, because when you lose confidence your head goes down. When I saw my nails, it was a reminder to look up + just own it. I had a purpose problem. Sometimes you are supposed to let things happen (instead of make them happen). How do you know the difference? Amy's Podcast "Why Not Now?" I got great advice from people I respect (Tony Robbins, Mark Cuban, Jessica Alba). I thought, I should record this to share with others. I realized there were probably many times my intuition was screaming at me and I needed to learn to listen. Great leaps in life come from intuition. If you find yourself hopping onto Twitter, Facebook or Instagram and feeling drained and annoyed: Stop following those accounts. Check in + see how you feel. If you wouldn't invite them in to have dinner, don't expose yourself them; they don't bring you positive energy. Live Inspired Podcast Ep. 80 guest Erik Wahl, performance graffiti artist and innovation guru, introduced me to Amy Jo. Andre Norman went from juvie, to jail to Harvard. Andre began selling marijuana in 6th grade to pay for pants so he wasn't seen as the "poor, smelly kid with only two pairs of pants." Vulnerable insights like this one from Andre will allow you to expand your humanity and understand the very real, everyday struggles that can snowball into time spent in jail. Join me for an amazing conversation that will shed light on an often forgotten part of our community... and share the redemption that can come with setting a lofty goal and sticking to it. From jail to Harvard, our friend Andre is here. Don't miss it. SHOW NOTES: "Please speak kind words to your kids and never stop. The day I wanted to change my life, it was those kind words I was able to hold onto. I've seen people who wanted to change their lives, but they had nothing to hold onto so they got blown back in." "Every Wednesday, the rabbi taught me how to be a better person. He taught me things I'd never learned before; to say I'm sorry." If you want to get to a new place at the next level, it's about forgiveness. Empathy v. forgiveness - choose empathy. Once you do, forgiveness will come. I'm the sum total of all of my mentors. Don't speak to their potential; speak to their pain. I try to teach kids to ask for help. I realize I wanted my parents to be the ones, so I passed up good help. Take the help that is offered from teachers, etc. www.AndreNorman.com If you like this podcast, you will love Live Inspired IN STUDIO.
