Send us a Text Message.Hi Friend,Sometimes I look in the mirror and focus on the deepening wrinkles across my face. Other times I notice that I move slower on the tennis court than I used to. I imagine the future and what it will feel like to ride the rest of this curve.   If you're like me, you may occasionally feel “blue” when you consider how little time you have here. Even if we are very fortunate, it won't be long until we're looking back on our nearly-completed lives and taking stock.  I know what I hope I will be able to say at that time. I have a great relationship with my Creator and feel peaceful about what will come next.I've used my unique combination of resources, talents, skills, passions and experiences to make life better for others (especially those I'm closest to).I've had beautiful relationships and reveled in the joy of the journey. When I start to feel sad about having finite days, I try to remember that until my last breath I can still be useful. Thankfully wrinkles don't prevent me from sharing an encouraging word with a struggling friend or from handing my jacket to someone living on the street in the cold. But right now I long for clarity on just how to be maximally useful. I think having a sharper definition of that would help me organize my time, find satisfaction in a focussed pursuit, and see the difference I might make. For that reason, I'm going into the locker room for “halftime.” In sports, halftime is that pause at the midpoint of the game to assess how it's going. It's a break to make plans for playing the next period even better than the first. In life, as I take time “off the field,” I'll be meeting periodically (through Halftime Institute) with a small group of people who are asking a similar question, “How do I use what's at my disposal to make the impact I'm on this earth to create?”I wanted to share because as I take this break I don't plan to podcast as frequently. And I may write to you a little less often. But with your permission, I'd love to stay in touch. At a monthly(-ish) cadence, I'd like to share my journey, hear about yours, and continue learning with you. In the meantime, I hope you are thriving! With love,LisaGet uplifting reminders wherever you hang out:Connect with the host, Lisa Liguori:Website:https://lisaliguori.comEmail me: Lisa@AdviceColumn.comConnect with us at Advice Column:tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@advicecolumnp...Website:https://advicecolumn.com/Instagram:@advicecolumnpodFacebook:

Finding peace in an anxious world | with Alan Fadling

Bonjour! Stephanie here. How do we overcome anxiety, and embrace peace? More than ever, our daily life seems to fight us on this quest. Do you, like so many of us, see anxiety as an incentive to perform? Or a proof of how much you care? Or is anxiety simply an unwelcome shadow over your days, bringing with it clenched teeth and an upset stomach? Today is an invitation to step into a life characterized by peace, grace, and gentleness, replete with the palpable presence of God. God promises us that it is ours in Christ Jesus. The world does it best to make it impossible. So, which one will it be? Anxiety leads us to succumb to fear and fight peace. Anxious living is a distortion of good motives, blocking the clarity of stillness and rest. Peace is the antidote to anxiety. This peace is found in practicing God's presence and embodying the virtues of grace, found in Christ. But, what does it look like, and how do we get there? This week I welcome Alan Fadling back on the show to dive into a real and raw conversation about overcoming anxiety and finding peace. Alan has felt mastered by worry, but he brings counsel on how to learn a better way and who to look to for it: Jesus, "the ultimate non-anxious presence." He constructs a posture from which we can rest more deeply, live more fully, and lead better. Fixing our minds on grace and eternity, we can begin to see the benefit of loosening our grip and operating from a sure foundation. Alan candidly shares his personal journey, highlighting how anxiety, coupled with perfectionism, led to a cycle of high standards, achievements, and ultimately, dissatisfaction and discouragement. His honest portrayal of himself as a "recovering perfectionist" resonated deeply with me – and I suspect I am not the only one! Alan's emphasis on progress over perfection reminds us that growth is a journey, not a destination. This is a deeply biblical message that our culture has us forget all too easily. And so we find that grace, with its essence of unmerited favor and unconditional love found in Christ, becomes a transformative force, offering solace and redemption in the face of anxiety. This is one of the key messages of Scripture. Alan also shares with us the practice of embodying God's presence and cultivating "little virtues" such as humility, patience, gentleness, dependence, and surrender. He tells us about learning patience in the chaos of Southern California traffic, reminding us that it's the simple things that steer us towards a peaceful life, even when the world seems to have gone upside down. This underscores the significance of relinquishing the incessant pursuit of materialistic and ambitious goals in favor of humility and grace. Scripture makes clear the importance of faith, imagination, and embracing an "unhurried influence." Rattling through life at top speed isn't the secret to peace. Alan's prayer for the audience to grow in unhurried influence is an open invitation to take the scenic route, savouring the moments, and stepping into a life ruled by peace, grace, and gentleness. So, as you sail away from this episode, remember - peace isn't found in the rush-rush of everyday life, but in the sweet, steady rhythm of grace in Christ Jesus. Episode Description: Are you consumed and overwhelmed with the pace of life or have you discovered the way of the unhurried life? Today's guest is Alan Fadling, the Founder and President of Unhurried Living, Inc. Additionally, he is the author of An Unhurried Life and An Unhurried Leader. In this important conversation, Alan helps us slow down to recognize the negative impact that the challenge of hurry can have on our souls. Alan recognizes the challenge of hurry that we are confronted with on a daily basis, yet shows us another way forward, the way of unhurriedness.   Looking to the example of Jesus, we are reminded that “he didn't let busy fill every waking minute of his life.” Alan invites us to re-evaluate what matters most, loving God and loving people. Unfortunately, if we lose sight of this, hurry can consume us and we will find ourselves missing the mark. We are presented with the important reminder that “you can't love people in a hurry and you can't love God in a hurry.” By embracing the way of unhurriedness, we can experience a deeper connection with God and therefore re-establish our identity in our relationship with God instead of our performance or accomplishments. The way of unhurriedness sets the stage for the profound kingdom impact that we can cultivate in our lives and in the people around us.   In this conversation, you will hear Alan and Bobby discuss the following: Focusing on the things that matter most. The challenge of hurry vs. the challenge of busyness. The patient process of developing people. Developing personal habits and rhythms. About the guest: Alan Fadling (M. Div., Fuller Theological Seminary) is President and Founder of Unhurried Living, Inc. in Mission Viejo, CA, inspiring people to rest deeper, live fuller and lead better. He speaks and consults internationally, as well as nationally with organizations such as Saddleback Church, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, Cru, Halftime Institute, Apprentice Institute and Open Doors International. He is the award-winning author of An Unhurried Life (IVP 2013), honored with a Christianity Today Award of Merit in spirituality, An Unhurried Leader (IVP 2017), and What Does Your Soul Love? With the overwhelming pace of life, many of us struggle to stop long enough to be present. Too often we live our lives more at the pace of the culture in self-interest, drivenness, empty excitement and anxiety. Alan Fadling has spent years coaching leaders and communities how to live an unhurried life, teaching that productivity and success are not our chief end, but rather living at the pace that our true self longs to live. So, he and Stephanie discuss how to follow the pace of Jesus Christ. Jesus never hurried, yet He accomplished everything He needed. How can we run counterculture and embrace rest as part of our spiritual roots? Alan invites us to ponder the essential nature of slowing down in a culture that tells us that productivity is the measure of our worth. Brew yourself a cup of your favorite hot drink, curl up with a blanket and join this slow, purposeful conversation about worshipping Jesus Christ through rest. As part of our “Pathways to God's presence” series, Stephanie and Alan invite you to slow down enough to hear the whisper of God's presence in your day. MEET ALAN FADLING Alan Fadling is president and founder of Unhurried Living, Inc. in California. He speaks and consults internationally with organizations such as Saddleback Church, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, Cru, Halftime Institute, Apprentice Institute, and Open Doors International. He is the award-winning author of An Unhurried Leader and An Unhurried Life, which was honored with a Christianity Today Award of Merit in spirituality. He is also coauthor (with Gem Fadling) of What Does Your Soul Love? Alan speaks from his award-winning book, An Unhurried Life, about unhurried life with God, in community, in leadership development, in solitude, silence and prayer, and in doing the hard work of continued growth. From his book, An Unhurried Leader, he speaks on leading from overflow, working and leading with God, grace-empowered leadership, and leadership vision. He addresses the intersection between personal spiritual formation and fruitful leadership engagement. People leave these gatherings inspired, encouraged and energized for their life and work with God. Alan consults with groups of leaders to provide training in a way of planning, strategizing and leading that is well-rooted in deep intimacy with God. Incorporate a “seek the kingdom first” approach to leadership. Learn to plan events from a center of listening to God and seeing people through His eyes. Learning these patterns contributes to the sustainability of your leadership, and can produce “much fruit that lasts (Jn 15:16).” Alan offers coaching to focus individual attention on issues of personal spiritual and leadership formation. He has served as a sabbatical coach to many. He brings decades of leadership experience to those he coaches. His coaching combines the essence of a spiritual director and the practicality of a leadership formation coach. Alan can help you get unstuck and find your unhurried and fruitful way forward in leadership and ministry. GO TO https://www.unhurriedliving.com/ for more. Buy Alan's new book at https://www.unhurriedliving.com/ayearofslowingdown  Alan says, “These devotionals had their beginnings in my personal journal. I began to practice the regular discipline of spiritual journaling in my twenties. Since then, I've journaled thousands of pages and millions of words. My journal is a place where I wrestle, meditate, reflect, create, and, in it all, pray. It's a place where I acknowledge the presence of God with me. I trust that the Spirit of God with me along the way will be with you as you read.” Endorsements for “A year of slowing down”: "The brilliance in this book cannot be overstated. Resting takes time. Lord knows, it takes great grace as well. When Israel came out of Egypt, it took a long time to learn the new rhythms of God under the lordship of Yahweh. This book invites us to a conversion of rhythm. And if you are like any of us, it may take a whole year. Highly recommended." - A. J. Swoboda, assistant professor of Bible, theology, and world Christianity at Bushnell University, author of After Doubt "I can't think of anyone better than Alan Fadling to lead us on these five-minute daily retreats that he has provided. Far from being escape moments, these times will help us sink more deeply into reality." - Jan Johnson, president of Dallas Willard Ministries and author of Abundant Simplicity "Don't be fooled by the title of this book into thinking it's about slowing down the pace of your life so you can 'smell the flowers' or somehow break away from the world. It's about adopting a pace of life that allows you to listen to the Scripture more fully, with your mind as well as your heart. That is what Alan has done in the writing of this book. He models it for us on every page. If this is the result of a deliberately unhurried pace, then I'm in!" - Michael Card, musician and author of Scribbling in the Sand. During the next few episodes we will be talking about joy and experiencing a life of joy, even in times of sadness.  In this episode we will discuss the difference between happiness and joy. The Merriam-Webster dictionary definition of joy and happiness: Joy is the emotion evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune or by the prospect of possessing what one desires. Happiness is a state of well-being and contentment; a pleasurable or satisfying experience. An article in Psychologies Magazine states:  Joy and happiness are wonderful feelings to experience, but are very different. Joy is more consistent and is cultivated internally. It comes when you make peace with who you are, why you are and how you are, whereas happiness tends to be externally triggered and is based on other people, things, places, thoughts and events. They suggest 3 things that you can do to help foster joy. 1.  Meditation. It's important to be able to tap into your heart rather than your head, your intuition rather than your thinking mind. Quietening the chatter in your mind and creating space within allows you to listen more closely to what brings you joy. 2. Cut down on social media. We are so heavily influenced by what we 'should like/do/have/buy' that this so often is not in line with what truly brings us joy. For many of us, social media has become a necessity in our day. If ditching social media altogether is not an option, think about how you can cut down on it. 3. Keep a journal and practice gratitude for the things that bring you joy. Cultivate gratitude wherever possible and even have gratitude for the things that challenge you, as these help you to grow and build strength. This also helps to define what brings you joy and what doesn’t. Having an attitude of gratitude makes us more appreciative and trusting, gives us better self-esteem and helps us bounce back from stress. It allows us to view the world, and our situation within this world, in a more positive, healthy way. An article I reference in Psychology Today states:  Happiness is external. It's based on situations, events, people, places, things, and thoughts. Happiness is future-oriented and it puts all its eggs in someone else's basket. It is dependent on outside situations, people, or events to align with your expectations so that the end result is your happiness. But happiness is not joy because joy is not external, it can't be bought and it is not conditional on someone else's behavior. In fact, joy is not contingent on anything in order to exist. Making a large purchase of something that you have wanted can make you happy, but does it cause you joy.  How many times have you been so happy because of something you acquired, such as a new car, house, boat, clothes, and the list goes on.  How often can you say, knowing what we have heard about the difference between joy and happiness, has the acquisition ended up giving you joy? How often has it resulted in regrets? We will be talking about why joy can be so elusive, even when we experience happiness.  We will talk about why people experience joy even while living in the darkest places or experiencing great difficulty. Much of the discussion will take place around the book The Joy Model by Jeff Spadafora of the Halftime Institute. Action Item:  Send me a comment about what makes you experience joy, or what you feel is keeping you from experiencing a sense of joy.  Email your comments to craig@craigcoilecoaching.com or put them in the comments section under the show notes for this episode at craigcoilecoaching.com/encore.  While you are doing this, please take time to leave a rating and review on your favorite podcast platform. Joy, feeling one's own value, being appreciated and loved by others, feeling useful and capable of production are all factors of enormous value for the human soul. - Maria Montessori The exercise of benevolence is joy to loving hearts: the more pain it costs, the more joy it is. Are you discontent even though everyone around you thinks you “have it all?” Lloyd Reeb, founding partner of Halftime Institute, is on a mission to help you ensure your next season in life is defined by joy, impact, and balance. Today, Lloyd will remind us of the importance of not just doing what is valuable, but doing what is priceless. Regardless of your age or what you can bring to the marketplace, Lloyd will encourage you to get clear, get free and get going. SHOW NOTES: How can your second-half be even more impactful, fun and joyful than the first half was? At 14-years-old, Lloyd's father helped him purchased a few acres of land, charging interest which taught him values. “What do I need to do to pass down the values of generosity, honesty, and hard work before passing the monies down.” A successful building developer inadvertently taught him the importance of significance beyond success. The exposure to what was happening around the world inspired Lloyd to serve or give back to others. Lloyd was introduced to Bob Buford, author of best-selling book Halftime. Because they naturally bracketed the movement of people wanting to renew themselves at mid-life, they created The Halftime Institute. “Sloppy busy”: Your calendar is full but you have a nagging lack of focus and leverage that you had in your career. Resist the temptation to start working on the solution and take the time to think through your core strengths. Gallup's Strengths Finder 2.0 played an important role in their children being heard. Get a copy or each other's strengths like I did with my family. Halftime is a remedy, not a strategy: Think about who you are and then the work you’ve been given. Don’t just jump in and get “sloppy busy.” Take time to reflect on who you are and the best place you can give back. Ask yourself: When was I at my best? What was the most painful experience in my life and what did I learn from it? Very often our pain from the past calls out a path for our future. Think about who you are and not the work. Valuable vs. priceless: On one side of the paper, write a list of all the valuable things your life. On the other side, write the priceless things. What are you doing to protect the valuable versus priceless things? The Halftime Institute: University for the second half of life, a place where people blessed with success, begin to explore how to make the second half even richer + fulfilling than the first half. Have a healthy mid-life renewal: Get clear, get free, get going. Intentionality: Lloyd strives to help other leaders be more intentional in not only how they give their time away but also building a world-class family.  If you enjoyed hearing how Lloyd is moving from success to significance, you'll love hearing Live Inspired Podcast guest Jill Blashack Strahan share how she created a successful business during a tragic season in her life on ep. 18. You'll also love hearing Live Inspired Podcast guest + graffiti artist Erik Wahl share how the dot-com bust in 2000 led him to reevaluate his life on ep. 80. LLOYD REEB'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? The Bible and Ordering Your Private World by Gordon McDonald. 2. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? Curiosity. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? I have seven “Book of Days”. Every day, I keep an artifact of someone’s life that I’ve affected, touched or helped. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? Historian David McCullough. 5. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? My mom taught me it’s better to give than to get. 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Marry Linda Walker. She's taught me relentless forgiveness. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? 100x: I’d like to take what I’ve been given and invest it so it produces 100 times that blessing or impact in other people’s lives. *** Did you enjoy today's episode? He spent 20 years as a leadership and executive development consultant for Fortune 1000 companies such as Ford Motor Company, Sears & Roebuck, Compuware, Domino's Pizza, Visteon, Northern Trust Bank, Helene Curtis, and Sky Chefs. Favorite Success Quote “As long as habit and routine dictate the pattern of your life, the full potential of your soul will never emerge.”~Henry Van Dyke Key Points 1. Success Will Not Fulfill You In today's materialistic and ego driven society, we are incepted from birth with the idea that buying more stuff and achieving higher status will lead to joy and fulfillment. But as anyone who has ever been to the top will tell you, this is simply not true. While it is true that achieving goals, improving your material comfort, and reaching new heights of social prestige will increase your momentary happiness, this path does not offer any sort of contentment or joy in the long term. It results in a never ending quest to recreate the dopamine high that is released every time that you hit a new tax bracket. 2. Giving  Yourself Away is the True Path to Gaining Everything While living a life in pursuit of excess material wealth won't lead to fulfillment, living a life in pursuit of generosity and impact, and legacy will. If you truly wish to live a life of fulfillment and joy, not just momentary happiness and brief episodes of ecstasy, you must start by giving yourself to a cause bigger than yourself. You must find a passion and a calling that makes it difficult for you to stay in bed in the mornings because you are so excited about how you will get to change the world. As cliche and trite as it may sound, finding a calling that is about a bigger picture than just yourself is the true path to success. Perhaps at this moment, you can't find that calling or simply don't know how you want to impact the world. This is fine. Start with simple things: Volunteer at a local habitat for humanity, give away 10-15% of your income to a cause you believe in, or even just call your grandparents from time to time. Find things to do that remind you that you are a small part of a whole, find things that let you serve and give without any expectations. Give yourself away and you will gain everything. 3.You Need to Line Up your Core, Capacity, and Context  Similar to the four pillars, the Three C's are the essentials of life that must be in alignment for you to be living a “10” life. Core: This is who you are, what your mission is, and what you stand for. To have a well defined “core” (in the sense of success and fulfillment, not your abs), you must define your virtues, your beliefs, and your character traits that will remain unwavering no matter how strenuous the external circumstances become. (also called NUTS or Non-negotiable, unalterable terms by Wayne Levine) And you must also discover and be actively pursuing what you believe to be your calling and purpose in life. Capacity: This is how you are showing up in each area of your life, it's about maximizing your potential. Are you staying in the best shape you can physically? Are you being the best husband, father, friend, son, or brother that you can relationally? Are you connected with whatever your definition of God is? (Or if you are an atheist, have you done your research and do you have peace about the question of God?) Context: This is where you are working towards your calling and purpose. Do you need to move jobs, cities, or countries? Do you need to stay where you are and simply work change how you are showing up? Only you can answer these questions, and it is imperative that you take the time to do so lest you work your whole life away on something that you realize (too late) was never in line with your calling in the first place. 4. Busyness and Comfort are Your Two Greatest Enemies  The two greatest enemies to success and fulfillment are not laziness or greed or ignorance, but busyness and comfort. Busyness and comfort are malicious and sneak into your life slowly, without any obvious signs, but once they are in, they slowly and surely convince you that you are ok at your current level because there isn't the pain necessary to elicit change. When you are comfortable, it is difficult to find a real reason to change your lifestyle or pursue dreams, and when you are constantly busy, you never have the time to sit down and ask these questions in the first place. Don't allow busyness or comfort to rob you of your destiny. Take time to evaluate where you are in life with an open and unbiased mind. Go down the rabbit hole and it is likely that you will come out of the other side with a better understanding of yourself, your purpose, and the actions required to achieve it.

In this episode, Marc interviews Dr. Joel Dobbs. Dr. Dobbs is an experienced life sciences executive, with over thirty years of experience in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. He has served in a variety of senior leadership roles in information technology, as well as general management, clinical research, regulatory affairs, post-marketing surveillance, academia, and consulting. Dr. Dobbs has served as a member of top-tier executive teams of dynamic organizations, in startup, rapid-growth, turn-around, merger, integration, and change phases.   He currently serves as the Executive-in-Residence at the University of Alabama Birmingham's Collat School of Business, where he also directs the school's office of innovation and entrepreneurship, teaches, and works with entrepreneurs within the UAB environment and the greater Birmingham business community to help them develop and grow their business. He is also the CEO of the Compass Talent Management Group, LLC, a consulting firm that assists organizations with the identification and development of key talent with designing organization strategies and structures to maximize their ability to compete in the business world of today and tomorrow. Marc and Joel discuss several topics, including Joel’s intentionally varied first half of his life, some of the triggers that started his pursuit of goals for the second half of his life, and how giving back through mentoring, from his extensive experience, is so gratifying.   Key Takeaways: [:54] Marc welcomes you to episode 75 of the Repurpose Your Career podcast. 75 episodes make a year-and-a-half. Marc invites you to share this episode with like-minded souls. Please subscribe wherever you listen to this podcast, share it on social media, and tell your neighbors and colleagues. [1:39] Next week, Marc will team up with Mark Anthony Dyson of The Voice of Jobseekers podcast for a Q&A episode to answer some listener questions. [1:52] This week’s episode is from the archives. It is an encore interview of Dr. Joel Dobbs. Dr. Dobbs was Marc’s first interview with a person who had made a career pivot in the second half of life. It was one of the best stories because Dr. Dobbs planned out his transition. Marc hopes you enjoy this episode! [2:15] Marc welcomes Dr. Joel Dobbs. [2:40] Joel majored in Chemistry, went to pharmacy school, and got a doctorate. He followed a purposefully varied career path, in three phases, until he retired five years ago. He was with GlaxoSmithKline when it was just Glaxo. In his time there it went from a startup to $3.5 billion a year. He helped the various business units develop.[6:34] Another company recruited him and he spent the last 15 years of his career as a CIO —  a completely unplanned path — until he retired five years ago. That was the first half of his career. Marc calls this a portfolio career or “a lot of different stuff.” [7:44] Today Joel is a business school professor at UAB Collat School of Business. He also runs a leadership consulting business, teaching from the multitude of mistakes he has made over the first half of his life. He finds it tremendously gratifying. [9:16] In his late 40s, Joel started considering his life’s impact. Around 50, he read Halftime: Moving from Success to Significance, by Bob Buford, and it set his path. [11:11] The halftime of your life is a period to ask: how do I turn the second half of my life into one that leverages my success, but focuses on significance? [11:42] Joel began really thinking about what did he want to do next? Was his ladder of success leaning against the wrong building? [13:52] Joel was very interested in his company’s offer of a voluntary retirement when they extended it to executives. He talks about consulting work he did, and other companies that recruited him. He wrote the job description for one of them. He also attended The Halftime Institute, which changed his view of life. [16:00] Joel put together in a notebook his plan for the second half of his life. He looked for opportunities to test concepts about working. [21:16] Marc comments on how Joel drove his career agenda. He knew when to move on and he left, always with the goal in mind. [22:03] If you know what you want to do, and you're able to answer that clearly, concisely, and decisively, you'd be surprised how often you get to do that. [22:19] Spend time thinking about the perfect life and writing it down. That very act sensitizes you to opportunity. [22:54] When Joel checked his ‘perfect life’ list after years, how much had he achieved? [24:45] Intentional achievement takes clarity. Usually, clarity does not come overnight. [26:50] Marc’s final thoughts: Dr. Dobbs was very purposeful in planning out his second half of life. [28:11] Marc invites you to check back next week when Mark Anthony Dyson and Marc answer listener questions.   Mentioned in This Episode: Careerpivot.com Mark Anthony Dyson The Voice of Jobseekers GlaxoSmithKline Stevens Institute of Technology UAB Collat School of Business. Owning a company with thousands of employees and having influence in the community gave Tana amazing resources to serve the cause WHILE still keeping her company. How did she do it? Tana DID NOT DO the typical thing that entrepreneurs do after they come back from a conference. She did not walk back into the business and immediately bark orders on the new direction she was taking with her role. Tana wanted to help change people’s lives and that first started with mentoring and guiding her executive team. Getting her executives on board with the new vision was a slow but effective process. She gave them the resources they needed to become the next level team that would allow her to move into a different and more distant role. Everyone on her team first took their Strength Finders 2.0 to help guide the process. After the Strength Finders, Tana set up a monthly meeting to touch base with her team. She also wrote a book called Creating a World of Difference that she gives to eve

The 8th in line of 8 older brothers, a negative net worth of $50,000 and a love for manufacturing, Joe had no doubts he was destined to be an entrepreneur. He went to the library and built his own database of manufacturing companies, pre internet, with the goal of calling all the owners to see where they were at. Joe’s main goal was to find someone that would be willing to take on a hard working, ambitious young man that would be willing to sell their company over time. After finding his perfect situation Joe did just that… and then acquired 3 more manufacturing companies before selling! What happened when he first sold his companies? He sold his companies at a relatively young age because he had 4 little kids at home and was starting to realize that he should reprioritize some things in his life. After Joe sold he got to work on his bucket list, i.e. single-digit golf handicap, running the Boston marathon etc. But soon it just wasn't cutting it. In his words: “I thought I'd either have to create a new list or go back to work, or I'm gonna die!” That's how he ended up in sports management, specializing in acquiring companies on behalf of sports stars. What has he learnt from the people he's worked with? Many people measure success on the things we can see, i.e. flash cars, big houses etc., and this is more the domain of the first half. In the second half it's more about things we don't see, like respect, dignity and serving others. In the second half it’s about finding a purpose and having a life vision. Joe's advice on how to measure your life after business: If your life turned out really great, what metrics would you use? Not enough people really define what success means. They can easily assume they're unsuccessful, or on the flip side, aim for something they assume will make them successful; but it could all end in tears if they haven't focused on what success really means to them. The questions Joe asks himself at the end of each day: What's the best thing that happened today? What did I do today to create my ideal day? What am I most grateful for? What's one new thing I learned today? What did I do today to make X dollars for my family? What did I do today to allow God to work through me? What am I looking most forward to tomorrow? We continue the theme of ‘halftime' in people's lives by speaking to Lloyd Reeb, an eminent author and speaker who coaches and mentors for the Halftime Institute. Lloyd shared with us some great advice about how to use an existing business as a platform to do good for others and for yourself, and his own story will strike a chord with many people too. In his words: “I was pursuing the american dream without any sense as to where it was going to take me” In today's episode, you will learn: What the most important question you need to answer as an Entrepreneur What it’s like to use your company as a platform to live the life you want The Post-it note exercise to a great management team How to find the right people to go on the Entrepreneurship journey with you The 3 steps to find the best path to a great life and business What was the moment when he realized his corporate life needed to change? At the age of 30 he travelled across Asia and ended up in Manilla to visit a friend who was a missionary. He spent most of the week in Manilla playing basketball with kids and talking to them about faith. After that he went to a 5-star resort in Malaysia and realized he had more fun with the kids in Manilla than he did in the sanitized surroundings in Malaysia. How did he start the process of change? He looked at his life in the same way as he would look at his businesses. In his words: “you wouldn't build a business without metrics, but how many of us use metrics for our own life?” Then his mentor Bob Buford (author of Halftime: Moving From Success To Significance) empowered him further by saying: “You come into my office and give me these goals every year, but you've never told me where you want them to take you. Any time you've got free, work on the question ‘if your life was perfect; what would it look like?'” Lloyd's advice for what you can do today as a family: Ask yourself three questions: Is there any limit of money you can spend on yourselves? If there is, what is it? What is in my kids' best interest to inherit when I pass away? How can you find your ‘mission'? The first thing you should do is watch Lloyd’s TEDx Talk.  It is amazing and summarized everything you need to know Lloyd's big point is for people to understand their mission in life before they make wholesale changes. It might be that their current company/workplace can help them do that or it may be that they have to move on. In his case he defined his mission as being a thought leader rather than an operator, so he relinquished his day-to-day management responsibilities and set about finding fields of work that had thought leadership at the forefront, hence how he became an author. He has also seen many examples of people using their companies creatively to make the kind of impact they want as part of their mission, i.e. a man who had a company that sold jumpsuits for prisoners created a sub-organization dedicated to preventing convicts from re-offending. What did Lloyd learn from the battle to change his identity? When you reinvent yourself, you're going to go through a detox process. You're addicted to the adrenaline of everyday business so it figures that it may take some time to adjust to a life without it. Understand there is a ‘head journey' and a ‘heart journey' in midlife renewal. The head journey is things like ‘what am I going to do with my time?' The heart journey is the concept of allowing you

Today we're speaking to someone who truly understands a life beyond business. As CEO of the Halftime Institute, Dean Niewolny has been empowering people to find fulfillment in their lives outside of work. Dean has lived through his very own crisis too. Having spent 23 years in senior exec roles across Wall Street, he can remember staring out of the window one day and wondering what it all meant. That feeling of emptiness persuaded him to sign up to the Halftime Institute as a client, and it wasn't long before he was given the opportunity to cross over to the other side and become a member of their senior management team. What a meaningful conversation we had – it's well worth a listen – but if you're pushed for time, read on for the summary of the show… What does the Halftime Institute stand for? Based on Bob Buford's book, ‘Halftime: Moving From Success To Significance', the institute offers guidance to people like Dean who find themselves at a crossroads in their career/life. As the title of the book says it is geared towards finding ‘significance' rather than the endless pursuit of ‘success'. People find themselves working with The Halftime Institute after they experience what Neil called  “smoldering discontent”… They have achieved success in today’s terms but still feel like something is missing. They are on a search to find more meaning in life. What does ‘halftime' mean? The concept of halftime started when Bob Buford woke up and had a “success panic”  in the middle of the night.  He had an epiphany that he was addicted to the kill and the thrill of the deal. He found himself asking, “What’s this all for? Is this it?” Halftime is not a time of crisis but a time to reflect.  It should be a catalyst for purpose, impact, and growth. Dean has seen the definition of what halftime means change significantly during his time in the business. When he started, it normally meant the literal halfway point in somebody's life, i.e. at 40-65 they'd look to identify significance. Now he sees people begin the quest for significance ranging from their late 20s to their 80s. It also used to be very male dominated, but now the split is only 60/40 male to female. How do people reach the awakening? In the case of many business owners and highly successful business people, it's a significant event like a death in the family or an illness. In Dean's case it was the realization he was in a state of ‘smoldering discontent'. Can significance only be achieved outside of work? Not at all – this is a common myth that Dean is desperate to bust. The obvious thought in many people's minds is to throw away their career and do something conventionally worthy like open a homeless shelter, but it is distinctly possible for people to use their existing platforms to find better fulfillment. According to Dean, 70% of people who complete Halftime programs actually stay where they're at. They simply find ways to reach significance with what they already have. How do you find your significance? Dean tried to do it on his own and it was a disaster. He advises you to take a pause in life, ‘figure out your strengths, passions, gifts and what makes you sad, glad and mad.' Dean says it's essential to have someone walk you through the journey. There are also great benefits in doing it as part of a group because sharing the journey with somebody else at the same level is a great motivating factor. What are the main obstacles that prevent people from finding their significance

And that’s my love for Halftime. Nothing satisfies more than to help a man or woman say, ‘This is what God has for me to do.’”   — Dean Niewolny, Halftime Institute CEO   You are probably going to live a whole adult lifetime that wasn’t available to your parents and grandparents. Their life expectancy at birth was 50 years. We have two lifetimes now. Life I is what occurs before halftime, and Life II comes afterwards. Most people have a pretty good plan for Life I, but few can see their way forward into Life II. Halftime is the in-between season that occurs at about age 45, plus or minus a few years. It’s the time first described in the book, Halftime – the season of “now what?” In our time, halftime really marks the end of Life I and the beginning of this whole new second adult season that we’ve identified as Life II or the second half. Halftime used to be the beginning of the end. Now it is the beginning of a whole new beginning: a season that for many has turned out to be the richest and most meaning-filled season of all. Peter Drucker once told Bob Buford, “The strongest insight you had in Halftime was that there is more than one lifetime.” Life II takes most people by surprise. Most people are unprepared and they are searching for meaning in mid-life. The Halftime Institute is the leading authority on creating a second half defined by joy, impact and balance.  We’ve served thousands of men and women from varied backgrounds. We also serve organizations like Kingdom Advisors, Young Presidents Organization (YPO) and World Presidents Organization (WPO). While in Chicago, he and his wife, Lisa, traveled many times to Africa and, seeing the abject needs of widows and orphans, made life changes that enabled them to get involved, such as helping to complete an orphan home and a Hospice home in Durbin, South Africa. In 2010, Dean traded his marketplace career for Halftime to help more people who, like him, wanted to expand their own “first half” success and skills into passion and purpose for meeting human needs and making a significant difference. Dean joined Halftime as managing director and in 2011 became chief executive officer. He speaks at events around the world, encouraging business leaders to channel first-half achievement into a second half defined by joy, impact and balance. Having grown up playing sports—eventually in college and semi-professional baseball—Dean still enjoys coaching youth sports, especially his son’s little league teams. He and Lisa have two children and live in Southlake, Texas.

And I said, “How am I going to bridge this gap? How am I going to reconcile this?”-Jeff Spadafora So many people “have been brainwashed into thinking that the key to happiness is to make as much money as you can as fast as you can,” begins Jeff Spadafora in this inspiring and enlightening message of how to integrate your career with your God-given gifts and purpose. He relates how we mistakenly tend toward a “binary vision” of thinking that we can only choose the marketplace or the mission field, when in fact there are multiple ways that we can remain in our current platform and still be fully obedient to God’s plan for us. We can “bloom” right where we are currently planted!  “Live an integrated life, where your Tuesday afternoon board meeting self is the exact same self as on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. when you’re tearing up hearing the Gospel.” –Jeff Spadafora  You will learn How to determine God’s plan for your life How to become self-aware through your skills and passions How to “unlearn” the expectations others have placed on you How to have the courage to become who you were created to be How to experience real and lasting joy and peace!
