Former All-American basketball player, Olympian, Rhodes Scholar and United States Congressman Tom McMillen chats with League of Fans' sports policy director Ken Reed in this episode. The two talk about Tom's decision to delay his NBA career by accepting a Rhodes Scholarship to attend Oxford University. The discussion then turns to the state of college athletics today, given the pressures of NIL, the transfer portal, sports gambling and huge media contracts. Reed switches the topic to the poor state of physical fitness our young people are experiencing today. McMillen provides great perspective on this issue given his long involvement with the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (now called the President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition). Other topics include the "Jungle of Youth Sports," as McMillen has called them, the profit-at-all-costs nature of sports in this country; why we use taxpayer money to fund new sports palaces for wealthy owners, instead of funding programs that create broad-based sports participation in this country; the lack of a national sports commission or sports ministry in the United States; and why our National Governing Bodies (NGBs) for sports don't -- or can't -- fulfill their mandate to promote "sports for all" in America.

It was a personal honor to have as my guest on this episode, Tom McMillen, President and CEO of Lead1 Association. As a kid growing up in Washington, DC, I had two dreams: 1) to play in the NBA and 2) to be President of the United States. I like to think I came a little close, having played basketball in college, worked for a U.S. Congressman and spent time as an NBA agent. At least that's what I tell myself. Having those dreams, and living in DC, Tom was someone I followed closely. Tom was an All-American at the University of Maryland, where he also became the school's first Rhodes Scholar. I got to watch his 11 year NBA career, especially his three seasons with the then Washington Bullets. I also followed closely Tom's three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he represented the 4th District of Maryland. Tom's career journey was what I aspired for myself as a young man. Today, Tom McMillen is President and CEO of Lead1 Association. Lead1 is a membership organization of collegiate athletic directors from primarily Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) programs. As the business of college sports has grown, so have the challenges facing institutions, programs and athletic directors - diversity, new media, sexual assault and domestic violence, and gambling are just a few. With his background in legislation, being a student-athlete, playing professionally and experience leading public companies, college athletics is fortunate to have Tom as a leader. In this episode, Tom and I discuss: How he, as a young man, followed the career of Bill Bradley, a former U.S. Senator, basketball All-American at Princeton and 10 years in the NBA. The impact attending college and playing professional basketball in the Washington, DC area had on his political aspirations. What leadership means to him. As a member of Congress, Tom's role in the original sports gambling legislation - Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992. Concerns of new legalized sports betting. What it was like when the news of the FBI college basketball investigation and arrests broke in the middle of their annual conference of more than 100 athletic directors in attendance and NCAA president Mark Emmert speaking at the same time. Concerns of legalized sports betting. College basketball "guarantee games" - the affect they have on career advancement of low and mid-major coaches. The importance of college coaches having an understanding of the issues and challenges AD's face - changing media landscape, declining game attendance, financial and budget pressures, hiring and retaining the right coaches, federal investigations. Gender and ethnic diversity in coaching and sports administration. The annual Lead1 Institute. Tom McMillen on his former University of Maryland Coach Lefty Driesell ~ ". . .Lefty, I still keep in touch with him. He's indomitable. He's really a special person. He should be in the Naismith Hall of Fame. It's such an injustice. I mean when he retired as an active coach, there were only three other coaches who had more wins than he did. I think it was Dean Smith. . ." Tom McMillen, Retired Basketball Pro, Rhodes Scholar, Public Servant, Businessman, and Philanthropist in studio interview Andy Ockershausen: This is Andy Ockershausen. This is Our Town. We have such a special man to talk to today. He's done so much in his lifetime, it's tough for me to keep up with him. But not only is he six feet 11, but he's got a track record that's unbelievable what he's done in the community. From playing professional basketball in the NBA to serving as US Congressman from the fourth congressional district of Maryland. He was a Rhodes Scholar. He's written a book about ethics and sports. He's been on a board of directors for the President's Foundation on sports, physical education, and nutrition. And these are only a few of his accomplishments, in addition to the unique distinction of being the tallest member of Congress. I got to know Tom McMillen with my involvement many, many years ago with Lefty Driesell and the University of Maryland. Tom McMillen, welcome to Our Town. Tom McMillen Loses U.S. Congressional Seat to Gerrymandering Tom McMillen: Well, it's great to be here Andy. Andy Ockershausen: Our Town is so big now, McMillen. Everywhere you went except Pennsylvania was Our Town. Certainly when you were in Congress in the fourth district was part, it's still part of Our Town. But they changed the voting district and they voted you out. Tom McMillen: It's the whole thing about gerrymandering they talk about today. Well, my district was basically split up into six different congressional districts. It's not new. It happens all over. The real question for me was ... It would have been nice to stay in Congress maybe 10, 12 years. There's really a choice you make whether you want to be there 30 years. I don't think I ever wanted to be kind of ... Andy Ockershausen: It wasn't a lifetime for you. Tom McMillen: ... a lifetime thing. It was more an opportunity to serve and make a difference. I had that experience and it was fantastic. Andy Ockershausen: Great. They were great years. Everything changed during your period in Congress. The whole delegation changed. And Virginia changed and Maryland changed. That's all part of our life has changed. I want to talk to the Tom McMillen I first heard about as a high school athlete. We had a relationship with the University of Maryland for WMAL and Lefty Driesell was one of our contacts. Lefty was trying to recruit a kid in Pennsylvania to come to the University of Maryland. The Road to University of Maryland Basketball and Coach Lefty Driesell Tom McMillen: Well, if you recall the history of that. My brother had played at Maryland- Andy Ockershausen: That's correct. Tom McMillen: -with Gary Williams, Coach Williams. Andy Ockershausen: They were players? Tom McMillen: They were teammates. My brother had played there. My brother was heading into medical school. He wanted me to go to Maryland. My other brother was at Carolina. He wanted me to go to Carolina. My other sister was at University of Pennsylvania. She wanted me to go there. The coach at University of Virginia used to coach in my hometown. He wanted me to go there. Andy Ockershausen: You had a lot of people pulling on you. Tom McMillen: Yeah. It was very difficult. It was compounded because I was on the cover of Sports Illustrated. I was the second high school player on the cover of Sports Illustrated in February of my senior year.

After 11 years playing in the NBA, McMillen embarked on his political career, serving three consecutive terms as a Democratic Congressman for Maryland.
