Tom Saunders and Paul used to work together at the “Bakery.” Tom was already there when Paul arrived and Paul recalled getting two pieces of sage advice from Tom about working in “Corporate America.” They reminisced and talked a lot about the people they worked with and how some were real characters! Tom has great memories of growing up in South Hill, Virginia where his dad was a doctor and he told Paul how he used to go on house calls with him. His dad had gone to the University of Richmond and Tom followed in his footsteps where he majored in political science. Paul and Tom talked about his love for sports, being a big Yankees fan and an equally as big fan of UofR Football. They discussed Tom's passion for cycling, how he has biked over 100,000 miles and he then also told him about two major cycling accidents he has had. They finished by Tom telling Paul about his wife (they're celebrating their 50 year anniversary this year), two kids and three grandkids.

New Zealand is still looking to secure their first medal in this year's Olympic Games.  They had a busy morning on Day Three, with multiple equestrian events, cycling, swimming, and the Black Ferns Sevens moving through to the semifinals.  Kiwi Tom Saunders, one of the top laser sailors in the world, is in Paris for his first Olympics.  He told Ryan Bridge that since they're all racing with identical supplied equipment, it's a lot more pure sailing, and comes down to the individual sailor's skill as opposed to what sort of gear they have.  They're not short on competition, Saunders said, with Australia and Britain setting the benchmark the last two years, but there's also strong competition from Germany, Norway, and Cyprus.   LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It was a breakthrough result for the 29-year-old and sets him up nicely as he not only tries to go to his first Olympic Games in Paris in 2024 but also win a medal for his country. Tom has been on the circuit for the best part of a decade and talks about his experiences in that time – how he's coped with disappointments after finding success came quite easily to him as a youngster, what was different about the last world championships in Barcelona and how he might not have even gone to the world championships had he stuck to his original plan. He also delves into his background growing up in and around a group of young sailors in Tauranga who have gone to achieve phenomenal success, what influence his brother has had on him and how training for and racing in an ironman event last year has helped shape his mentality as he commits to another Olympic cycle.

Forecasters have said the snow across New South Wales and parts of Victoria is a “significant event” not seen for 16 years.Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Gabrielle Woodhouse told news.com.au that snow had reached to far northern parts of New South Wales while on the ski resorts of Perisher and Thredbo in the far south as much as half a metre of snow had descended in the last 24 hours.“We don't often see really widespread snowfall across the New South Wales ranges all the way up to the Queensland border, And likewise, we don't take falling down to such low levels so it is quite significant,” she said on Thursday afternoon.Temperatures across the state have plummeted with Sydney still hovering around 9C at what should be the hottest part of the day. If the mercury remains below 11C in the city it will be the coldest day for 25 years.“Today, it's going to be significantly cold across the state so temperatures are generally going to be at least 10 degrees below average and quite a few places will approach or exceed the lowest maximums temperature record,” Ms Woodhouse said. The snow was likely to continue today on higher ground and will replaced by fierce winds on Friday.Pictures have streamed in from across NSW of the winter wonderland conditions. The forecast for Armidale includes snow and the snowfalls have already been reported in the Northern Tablelands town of Guyra.Snow has also been reported in Orange.Further north in Queensland the apparent temperature dropped to a freezing -5.6C at Wellcamp Airport near Toowoomba.Oakey, an agricultural centre and home to the Army Aviation Centre, shivered through an apparent temperature of -4.2C.The bureau says a low pressure system over central New South Wales will enhance the cool to cold westerly flow over southern Queensland today. It is predicting snow or sleet at times about the higher terrain on the Granite Belt. The cold snap is due to a pool of cold air direct from Antarctica. The bureau has warned that temperatures could plunge 10 degrees below average over the next day or so.Up to 20mm of snow could fall over areas that may only get a dusting once every few years.“This major winter storm will intensify across southeast Australia during Wednesday,” Sky News Weather senior meteorologist Tom Saunders said.“New South Wales will be the centre of this winter storm in terms of the snowfall over the next couple of days.”Mr Saunders said today should be the coldest day in decades for central and northern regions.text by Andrew Backhouse and Benedict Brook, news.com.au

In Memoriam: Friends of Baltimore Who Passed in 2018

Midday

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 19, 2018 5:26

As the year comes to a close, I’d like to take a moment to look back and remember some important contributors to local cultural and civic life who we lost in 2018. This is by no means an exhaustive list. I simply want to mention a few people I was blessed to know, and who our community was blessed to have. Tom Saunders died in January. He was an accomplished historian of local African American history, who led bus tours of important sites throughout the city. His tours drew thousands of people. He took them to Frederick Douglass’ house, the house where Thurgood Marshall was born, and the “Colored Pool,” that had long been abandoned in Druid Hill Park. He was a masterful story-teller, and having worked at the city Rumor Control office for many years, he knew very well how to separate fact from fiction.Few people knew John Taylor by his given name, but thousands of children knew him as Kinderman. He drove his Kindermobile from his base in Howard County to schools, festivals and conferences around the region, delighting children and their parents with his songs and dances, that he presented gently, lovingly and always with large dollops of audience participation. John passed away last July. In August, Baltimore lost one of its most dynamic, determined, and dedicated citizens. Sally Michel was a force of nature, an irrepressible spirit, and one of the most generous and committed people our city has ever known. She was a trusted advisor to Mayor Donald Schaefer, and a civic powerhouse who transformed Baltimore immeasurably. She established the Parks and People Foundation and the SuperKids Camp. She was an early and ardent supporter of the Baltimore School for the Arts. The Baltimore Sun reported that she served on 57 boards of organizations and institutions large and small, and she was the chair of 19 of them. She was indefatigable, elegant, and selfless. There are many fine people who are doing a lot of great work on behalf of Baltimore. They are not deterred by the depth of the problems we face. But none, in my experience, have explored solutions to those problems with the zeal and imagination and grace of Sally Michel. In September, we lost one of our most effective and experienced advocates for education. For more than three decades, Mike Bowler was a journalist for the Baltimore Sun, and his coverage of education was exemplary. His erudition, his deep concern for the success of students and teachers, his insights and his thorough understanding of the nuances and complexities of what it means to teach and what it means to learn made his work an invaluable resource for citizens and policy makers alike. He also worked at the Department of Education, and he served as a member of the Baltimore County School Board. We’ve heard the phrase, “If you can read this, thank a teacher.” Well, if you respect those special people who have made an incalculable difference in classrooms throughout our state, tip your hat to Mike Bowler. Not long after Mike’s passing, we learned of the death of Rashad Ollison, who died of cancer at the age of 41. He was also a reporter for the Sun, who wrote for the major papers in Dallas, Philadelphia and Norfolk, VA, as well. His expertise was in music and pop culture, and he wrote knowingly and compellingly about the ways in which music can uplift, enlighten and engage. His memoir, ----Soul Serenade: Rhythm, Blues, ---- Coming of Age Through Vinyl,---- is a gem. And so was he.  When Suzanne Cohen passed away last month, lovers of the arts lost one of our community’s most respected and generous philanthropists. It was Sue’s support of the Baltimore Museum of Art in 2005 that allowed the BMA to offer free admission for many of its exhibitions. She was also a generous underwriter of this station, in particular, the program and podcast, Out of the Blocks, which won an Edward R. Murrow Award for Aaron Henkin and Wendel Patrick. The contributions that these wonderful people have made to our city comprise some of the greatest blessings Baltimore has ever received. May they rest in peace, and may we build on their invaluable legacies.-- Tom Hall

Luke 5 1-11 The Calling of the First Disciples  One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the people crowding around him and listening to the word of God, he saw at the water's edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus' knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon's partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don't be afraid; from now on you will catch men.” So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

John 13:1-10 It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love. The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.  He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand. "No," said Peter, "you shall never wash my feet."  Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no part with me. Then, Lord," Simon Peter replied, "not just my feet but m hands and my head as well!" Jesus answered, "A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you."

Isaiah 45:18b-19 I am the LORD, and there is none else. I have not spoken in secret, in some dark land; I did not say to the offspring of Jacob, 'Seek Me in a waste place.' I, the LORD, speak righteousness, declaring things that are upright. Isaiah 46:3-4 Listen to Me, O house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel, you who have been borne by Me from birth and have been carried from the womb; Even to your old age I will be the same, and even to your graying years I will bear you! I have done it, and I will carry you; and I will bear you and I will deliver you.

Isaiah 41:17-20 (NASB) The afflicted and needy are seeking water, but there is none, and their tongue is parched with thirst; I, the LORD, will answer them Myself, As the God of Israel I will not forsake them.  I will open rivers on the bare heights And springs in the midst of the valleys; I will make the wilderness a pool of water And the dry land fountains of water. I will put the cedar in the wilderness, The acacia and the myrtle and the olive tree; I will place the juniper in the desert Together with the box tree and the cypress, That they may see and recognize, And consider and gain insight as well, That the hand of the LORD has done this, And the Holy One of Israel has created it.

Luke 18:31-34  Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things which are written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished.  For He will be handed over to the Gentiles, and will be mocked and mistreated and spit upon, and after they have scourged Him, they will kill Him; and the third day He will rise again."  But the disciples understood none of these things, and the meaning of this statement was hidden from them, and they did not comprehend the things that were said. Luke 24: 5b-7   Why do you seek the living One among the dead?  He is not here, but He has risen Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee, saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.

He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from birth.  Many of the people of Israel will he bring back to the Lord their God.  And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."

Isaiah 57 14-19And it will be said:“Build up, build up, prepare the road!  Remove the obstacles out of the way of my people.”  For this is what the high and lofty One says— he who lives forever, whose name is holy: “I live in a high and holy place, but also with him who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite.  I will not accuse forever, nor will I always be angry, for then the spirit of man would grow faint before me— the breath of man that I have created.  I was enraged by his sinful greed; I punished him, and hid my face in anger, yet he kept on in his willful ways.  I have seen his ways, but I will heal him;  I will guide him and restore comfort to him, creating praise on the lips of the mourners in Israel.  Peace, peace, to those far and near,” says the Lord. “And I will heal them.”

Soybean Pest Podcast

Today, Matt and Erin cover a wide range of topics. First, there are two entomologists interviewing for ISU president: Sonny Ramaswamy and Wendy Wintersteen. But the conversation is quickly diverted into talking about why entomologists make good leaders. Matt has another F.I.T. that includes a reference to Hogwarts. Tom Saunders named a new parasitoid wasp species after Lucius Malfoy, a character in the Harry Potter series. The new wasp was named Lusius malfoyi. Erin asks Matt about fall nuisance invaders around Ames, including multicolored Asian lady beetles, minute pirate bugs, and brown lacewings. Erin gives a shout-out to an insect-related podcast, Arthropod, from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This interesting series goes in-depth on insects and closely related species (e.g., painted lady butterflies and brown recluse spiders). Lastly, they are spreading the word about a fundraiser for BugGuide - help them meet their goal of $15,000!
