Conquering the Datasphere: Assessing the Threat of Chinese Data Collection With Ms. aren Reesman

About the Lecture: This lecture is part of the Student Speaker Series Through engagements like the Digital Silk Road and various state-owned enterprises (SOEs), the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has succeeded in creating an immense global network for data collection and stores of the world's data. This capability is unnerving, but a more serious threat emerges coupled with CCP's intentions to dominate on the world stage. Direct risk to the US varies depending on how the CCP will learn to process and use this data—whether for economic or coercive advantage. We can assume they would seek both, but the US knows little about what or how much data has been collected or the advancement of Chinese data learning technologies. Using the international financial system as inspiration, a model for monitoring, limiting, and reporting on global data collection and trading emerges that could provide the transparency needed to prevent China from conquering the datasphere. About the Speaker: Laren Reesman came to IWP with a B.A. in Intelligence Studies and double minors in French and Anti-Money Laundering from Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pennsylvania. She has always been interested in public service, foreign affairs, and policy. Laren completed her Master of Arts in Statecraft and National Security specializing in Defense at IWP summer of 2024. She has focused on China as a US adversary and hopes to help strengthen the US against Chinese threats. Laren honed her research skills through her time at IWP and is excited to share a relevant and emerging topic with her peers. Today's guest is Darren Angell, Assistant to the Head Coach at Furman University! Darren is the first ever “run it back episode” on Sports Business Secrets. Which is awesome for a few reasons. First, it means I've been bringing on experts in the industry for a long time. Second, and more importantly, he has pivoted to a different role in the sports business world so we get to learn a new perspective! Darren played basketball at Mercyhurst University before getting his law degree from the University of Kansas. He spent many years practicing law as an attorney in Chicago, during which time he simultaneously represented professional basketball players as a licensed sports agent. He had a change of heart in 2021 to get back into the coaching world, and after a giant leap of faith and found himself on staff at Indiana State University. Fast forward to today he is in his second year with Furman University with a role that I like to refer to as, “the most important job in modern college basketball.” Today we talked about…. leaving law and jumping back into college sports his first role as a director of basketball operations the opportunity to join coach Richey's staff at Furman the extraordinary NCAA Tournament win in 2023 his role as the “chief of staff” and what that entails why coaching staffs need to manage the business side NIL updates and how Furman is navigating that space What fundraising means for college basketball The challenges of building a culture in today's landscape What the future college landscape looks like and much more Appreciate you tuning in. Mach 18, 2023: Around The Horn Podcast on Crier Media brings you its spinoff ATH Sports with Ray Rauth. Ray reviews all the stories he worked on during the week for Crier Media: Earlier this week a video of Mercyhurst University hockey player and son of Philadelphia Flyers general manager Daniel Briere; Carson Briere was seen pushing a wheelchair down a flight of stairs. Mercyhurst released a statement on the incident, and I asked Twitter what they thought of the response. The answer; people thought it was pathetic. | Last season, casual baseball fans were introduced to New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz, after his entrance went viral across social media. A video of Diaz went viral Wednesday night for all the wrong reasons. In a win-or-go -home game, Edwin Diaz closed out a 5-2 win over the Dominican Republic, sending Puerto Rico to the next round of the World Baseball Classic. Unfortunately, for Diaz, Puerto Rico, and the Mets, Diaz was injured while celebrating the win with his teammates. | Between Wednesday and Thursday I asked Twitter users to vote on the worst fanbase in the AFC East, with 50% of the vote going to Patriots fans. Bills Mafia came in second with 33% of the votes. | Day one of our worst fans in the NFL had the Patriots voted the worst in the AFC East with 49.5% of the votes. Day two of our polls wrapped up Thursday night and Dallas Cowboys fans secured 51% of the votes, officially making them the worst fans in the NFC East. | Day three of our polls has wrapped up and the Cleveland Browns join the New England Patriots as the worst fans in the AFC. | The more the Bills Mafia tastes their version of success, the more sensitive the “hard as nails” table jumpers become. If Bills Mafia is a culture, it's a culture of cry babies that celebrates being the AFC East Champions (The only championship you celebrate is a Super Bowl) Friday, a former Buffalo Bills wide receiver Cole Beasley said what every football fan on the planet knows, and the Bills Mafia lost its mind.  Learn more about your ad choices.
