Nearly three decades after 81-year-old widow Gerthie Carolina was found savagely beaten and stabbed to death in her rural Oklahoma home, authorities have charged two of her relatives with murder, alleging they killed her to obtain a $40,000 inheritance. According to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), the case remained unsolved for 28 years until forensic testing revealed Carolina's blood on a shoe belonging to her then-17-year-old grandniece, Dakota Davis, who was present at the crime scene in 1997. Davis, now 45, and Carolina's niece, 81-year-old Carolyn Foreman, were both arrested and charged Friday with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Carolina's body was found in August 1997 at her home in Sasakwa, a small town of fewer than 200 residents. An autopsy showed she died from multiple stab wounds and blunt force trauma. At the time, Foreman and Davis told investigators they discovered Carolina's body around 3:15 a.m. when they arrived to take her to a doctor's appointment. However, investigators now allege the pair were motivated by a $40,000 certificate of deposit placed in a living trust for Foreman just four months before Carolina's death. Court filings say Foreman and Davis cashed out the trust days after the widow was killed, believing they were entitled to the money. In the years since, Davis allegedly confessed to killing her great aunt on multiple occasions, sometimes referring to an ax or a machete. Investigators say Davis' father also told them that in 2001 his daughter admitted “chopping up” Carolina while Foreman urged her, “Hit her again, hit her again,” during the attack. Family disputes were reportedly brewing prior to the murder, including an incident in which Carolina confronted Foreman, accusing her niece of stealing from her bank account. Foreman, who has been married for 51 years and suffers from dementia, was arrested in Midwest City, Oklahoma. Davis was taken into custody in Sacramento, California. Foreman was previously charged with first-degree murder in the 1999 shooting death of a 16-year-old, though that charge was dismissed. Her son was later convicted in that case and is serving a life sentence. Seminole County District Attorney Erik Johnson praised investigators for their persistence in pursuing the case. “This case is a testament to the relentless dedication of these investigators and our unwavering pursuit of justice, even decades after a crime is committed,” Johnson said in a statement. “We hope this brings some measure of peace to Gerthie Carolina's family after all these years.” Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA—When Wade Leist first came back to the family's stockyards from auctioneer school in 2004, his dad didn't exactly turn the auctions over to him — and he says that's a good thing. Instead, the elder Leist started his son out selling a few baby calves here and there, and spending plenty of time working in the back. The tactic paid off, as 20 years later, Leist came out on top in the World Livestock Auctioneer Championship, hosted by Livestock Marketing Association. It was the ninth time to compete for the auctioneer who regularly sells at Mitchell Livestock Marketing, Mitchell, South Dakota, United Producers Inc., St. Louis, Michigan, and his family's Northern Michigan Livestock, Gaylord, Michigan. The bid-caller earned his spot in the contest by winning the Torrington, Wyoming, qualifier last fall. He and 29 other semi-finalists battled it out in Oklahoma City June 12-15, participating in an interview competition and then selling on the block at the Oklahoma National Stockyards. As the new champion, Leist will spend the next year traveling the country, sharing his auctioneering skills with other livestock auction markets and acting as a spokesperson on behalf of the association and the livestock marketing industry. It's something he looks forward to — and a responsibility he doesn't take lightly. “I can't wait to go to work,” he said. “Both for the people who have supported me along the way, but also those who have never heard of me and are just excited to have the champion come sell. “Auction market owners care for and work hard for their producer customers. That they would invite me to come and represent them means a tremendous amount to me.” Dakota Davis, Waukomis, Oklahoma, was named reserve champion, and Dean Edge, Rimbey, Alberta, Canada, was runner-up. Jace Thompson, Billings, Montana, was the high score rookie and Barrett Simon, Rosalia, Kansas, had the top interview score. Rounding out the top 10 were: Justin Dodson, Welch, Oklahoma; Eric Drees, Caldwell, Idaho; Brennin Jack, Virden, Manitoba, Canada; Sixto Paiz, Portales, New Mexico; and Zach Zumstein, Marsing, Idaho. A one-hour highlight show from the 2024 competition will air on RFD-TV July 8. The 2025 World Livestock Auctioneer Championship will be held June 4-7 in Dunlap, Iowa.

This week we have Sheriff John Sproles and Captain Matt Pierce on as our guests. A kitten was rescued last Sunday. A new income tax is headed towards the folks of Henry County to pay for 911 service. Our main topic revolves around the Indiana Town Marshal system, where communities can create a police department. Sheriff Sproles expresses concerns that it creates “badge factories” where towns are giving full police power to individuals who don't necessarily have the citizens as their focus. Long discussion around how the process currently works, what the Sheriff and his team have done to address the issue, and if residents still have full police protection.
