Jeff and Phil welcome director Jennifer Lin and producer Jon Funabiki to talk about their documentary Ten Times Better and the incredible untold story of George Lee, a pioneering dancer with an unheralded place in ballet and Broadway history. They discuss the sensational skill and artistry that landed George the role he originated in The Nutcracker with the New York City Ballet; the filmmakers' search for the former dance prodigy that tracked him down in Las Vegas, where he was working in relative obscurity as a blackjack dealer; the ongoing struggle for recognition and inclusion in the performing arts; and the film's efforts to honor and preserve George's story, especially in this moment as diverse narratives face the threat of suppression and erasure.

According to the Cambridge dictionary, “longevity means living for a long time or remaining popular and useful for a long time.” Of course, I would like to live a long life, as long as my loved ones anyway, and I would like to be independent and happily busy for as long as possible. We know that nutrition, exercise, sleep and wellbeing are important but is there another ingredient in this secret sauce for living with as much vitality as possible, for as long as possible?Scientific studies show that being happy and grateful has a massive positive impact on our physical health. But there is another way of thinking which can also contribute and that is being curious. According to an article by George Lee (link in notes) “by encouraging our desire to seek out new knowledge, ask questions, and explore the world around us, curiosity may help to improve our memory, reduce the risk of chronic disease, and increase our resilience in the face of stress and adversity.”Miles Spencer is, in his own words, a curious guy from Pittsburgh. His day job has been to help create over 1,100 jobs while founding, financing, building and exiting three digital media companies. Prior to that, he was a Venture Principal at Capital Express (register.com), hosted MoneyHunt on PBS (pre- SharkTank), led over 1,500 people across 14 miles of open sea on kayak, and trekked 1,100 miles through the deserts of Saudi, Jordan and Syria… and A Line in the Sand ended up an Amazon Bestseller in the Middle East.Miles joins me on the podcast to chat about his adventure and his adventurous spirit which be believes has helped him to remain vital, active and interested in life into his seventh decade. It's all virtues. It's values. It's ways of being," says Dejarlais, a past president of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan. Is generative AI over-valued? At the heart of the generative AI boom has been the premise that a ‘killer app' for AI will make investors a return on their capital. But it's unclear how those use cases will actually make money for businesses that deploy them. Plus - is the problem a lack of AI take-up among employees? We hear from Jim Covello, head of global equity research at Goldman Sachs and George Lee, co-head of the Goldman Sachs Global Institute for a debate about the investment case for AI; Victor Riparbelli, chief executive of AI video start-up Synthesia, Amjad Masad, chief executive of coding start-up Replit, and Claudia Harris, chief executive at tech training company Makers.Free to read:UK artificial intelligence start-up Synthesia hits $2bn valuationAI-powered coding pulls in almost $1bn of funding to claim ‘killer app' statusThis season of Tech Tonic is presented by Madhumita Murgia, and produced by Josh Gabert-Doyon. I had the pleasure of speaking with George Lee, creator of Chez Jorge and author of A Gong's Table, to uncover the profound connection between food, culture, and identity. His book, a stunning collaboration with photographer Laurent Hsai, takes readers on a heartfelt journey through Taiwanese cuisine, deeply influenced by his grandfather, Buddhist traditions, and his experiences navigating life across cultures. At the heart of the book lies a tribute to George's grandfather, whose round wooden table symbolized the warmth and unity of family gatherings during his childhood. Together, we delve into George's reflections on family, the evolution of their culinary traditions after his grandfather's passing, and the rich tapestry of Taiwan's gastronomy. From Buddhist vegetarian practices to the creative impulses that shaped his storytelling, George brings a deeply personal and insightful perspective to the table.George's book is a beautiful love letter to Taiwan and a quietly uncompromising work of personal and national exploration, guiding readers through Taiwan's vibrant food culture with a rhythm as steady and intimate as footsteps. The conversation expands on this in a personal way with interesting tangents.Topics Discussed* The comfort and nostalgia of home-cooked meals.* The origins of "Chez Jorge" as a reflection of cultural and personal exploration.* How his grandfather, Ah Gong, inspired his culinary philosophy.* The impact of learning vegetarian cooking from Buddhist nuns.* Fusing modern influences with traditional Taiwanese practices.* His creative collaboration with photographer Laurent to tell Taiwan's story.* Future projects blending food, craftsmanship, and culture.* Tradition, innovation, and the transcendent power of food as a connection to home and heritage.Excerpts from Interview“The book was exactly like a learning process. I didn't have a clear idea of what I was gonna write until it was written.”“ Looking at new things with old eyes and to feel the changes”“ I think it's always like that when you're too comfortable with your own surroundings, there's not that much to write about anymore.”“It's sort of the feeling I wanted to capture with my cooking was just, like a sort of home cooking that is comforting that brings you home.”For more information: A Gong's Table Get full access to Leafbox at leafbox.substack.com/subscribe

From GAA superstar Jack Lynch who became taoiseach to RTÉ journalist George Lee whose political career was brief – for decades Irish voters have been presented at the polls with a range of well-known names. If the recent celebrity-filled European elections are anything to go by, the candidate list for the next general election will include a sprinkle of high profile names which the parties hope will break through the noise because of their name recognition among with voters.Well-known TV presenters Grainne Seoige and Alison Comyn have already been signed up by Fianna Fáil to go before the electorate, while others, particularly sporting names will likely emerge as the weeks go on as all parties hunt out candidates with strong name recognition. But why does that matter? And just because someone is glowing on the red carpet or the pitch, does it mean they'll be good on policy?Irish Times political correspondent Harry McGee explains why familiar names are so appealing to political parties and the electorate.Presented by Bernice Harrison. About 10 years ago, a stranger unwittingly revealed facts about Tom Wilson's adoption, pointing the singer and guitarist with Blackie and the Rodeo Kings towards life-changing truths about his identity. His origins had been hidden from him for more than five decades, even though a sense of not belonging and a recurring dream had made him suspect things were not exactly as they appeared. Growing up in Hamilton, he'd come to think of himself as "a big, puffy, sweaty Irish guy, when I'm actually a pretty big Mohawk guy," Wilson tells cohosts Jessica Vandenberghe and George Lee. "Now I can continue in my life, knowing the blood that runs through me, and that only strengthens my intent creatively," says Wilson, a member of the Kahnawake Mohawk Nation in Quebec. "My job now is to bring the Mohawk culture into the light, to battle whatever way I can, artistically or with my voice, or through standing as a land defender, or through starting an Indigenous scholarship, which I did at McMaster—all those ways are fighting colonialism."Find out more about Wilson, his thoughts on Canada, colonialism and identity, and his way of living a Mohawk life in this episode of Unsettled: Journeys in Truth & Conciliation. The Tom Wilson Indigenous Bursary in Honour of Bunny Wilsonhttps://tomwilsononline.com/scholarship/Beautiful Scars: Steeltown Secrets, Mohawk Skywalkers and the Road Homehttps://www.penguinrandomhouse.ca/books/531052/beautiful-scars-by-tom-wilson/9780385685672Beautiful Scars TVO Documentaryhttps://www.tvo.org/video/documentaries/beautiful-scarsThe Art of Tom Wilsonhttps://tomwilsononline.com/art/Kahnawake Mohawk Nationhttp://www.kahnawake.com/Thunder Bay Podcasthttps://www.canadaland.com/shows/thunder-bay/Thunder Bay on Cravehttps://www.crave.ca/en/tv-shows/thunder-baySupport the Show.Join our Facebook community: www.facebook.com/UnsettledJourneys/Check us out on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/unsettledjourneys/Become a paid subscriber: https://ko-fi.com/unsettledjourneysQuestions, comments, suggestions, offers to volunteer:unsettledjourneys@gmail.com
