Zdravo.

Zdravo.

We're having a chat about characters that differ from the source material and turn out crap because of it. Characters where the people adapting them didn't care, understand, or even take time to read the original stuff because they thought they knew better. There are a lot of instances where characters are adapted from source material and get totally messed up because the writers either don't understand or care about the source material they're taking from. Were not talking about being exactly true to a book, we're talking about understanding and respecting the characters so you can translate them to another medium and still have them recognisable and be themselves. There are many examples of poor character translation… apparently this is what happened with The Witcher in the 3rd season of the show. The story is that the led actor, Henry Cavil is a fan of the character from the books and games and took exception to the character's dilution and sidelining as the series progressed. We've been told that the writers for the show would openly laugh at the source material, something they're not really qualified to do since even the well regarded first series is extremely badly written and only gets the praise it does because of Cavel's portrayal of the lead character. An example that's very near and dear to me is the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie. This is a sort of a special case since the author had SOME involvement in it before he died but not enough apparently. the characters of Arthur Dent as played by Martin Freeman and Ford Prefect by Mos Def are terrible interpretations, so much so that they end up actively damaging the movie and harming the story. The essence of Arthur's character is a bemused, suburban British superiority: He has an expectation that as a British citisen his rights should be respected, his opinion should be listened to, people should understand his language, and things should conform to his suburban understanding of what is normal and good, all this is signaled by his wearing of Pajamas, a dressing gown and slippers the whole time. Whereas Martin Freeman's version simply doesn't understand what he's seeing and goes through the whole movie with an affronted frown on his stupid face. This is absolutely incorrect! Rather than not understanding anything Arthur is suppose to believe that he understands everything, but only in simple, suburban British terms,so that he can go through the story with a sense of befuddled superiority. Ford Prefect is supposed to be cool. He's easy going, and just meshes with whatever situation he's in, even if he doesn't understand it. He's very smart and quick to adapt. Mos Def's version is just a moron who looks good. All that said,Sam Rockwell's version of Zaphod was more perfect than perfect, and Zoe Dashenell was perfectly fine as Trillian, but that character was never ever written well to begin with in the original. What characters do you think with translated poorly in an adaption? Adam West's Batman? Hernry Cavil's Superman? Who?

The only problem is that they're on their way, at Zaphod's suggestion, to Asgard. What Zaphod does not know, however, is that the beasts guarding Asgard have been given Zaphod's scent... Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz in the meantime has got a whiff of the fact that a small colony of homo sapiens escaped the multidimensional destruction of (all the) Earth(s) and is now on his way to obliterate them in order to complete his paperwork.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-bearded-wit. "In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."Above is a typical funny passage that one can find in 'The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe' by Douglas Adams. This is the 2nd book of the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy trilogy and follows the adventure of Arthur, Ford, Zaphod and Trillian as they continue their random, absurd, highly illogical journey. They travel through time and space to get a good meal and enjoy the end of the universe.I summarised the book as follows. "The plot (if you can even call it that) is so zany and has so little structure that each chapter could almost be read as a stand-alone short story. What comes out in the writing of Adams is the classic British deadpan humour and his unique gift with wordplay. A fun, forget the troubles of the world type of book. Some examples provided by my new nonprofit, The Free Association about how DAS KAPITALISM IS DEAD as a Doornail, man! ... & hell, why not!! I'm starting to see a bright future post-Kapitalism. KKKapitalism was killing us all, anyway. So DOWN W/KKKAPITALISM; & Let Kapitalism be Dead! Let Kapitalism die not a slow, prolonged death like our grandparents did; before they died enmasse. In nursing homes from covid19! Because Nazi ass-clown & his minions don't give a rats arse about our old people! They want ‘em to ‘sacrifice themselves for the economy'??! Somebody tell these arse holes to stick it up their man!! CALL CONGRESS 202 224 3121 & tell ‘em: GFY!!! Let Kapitalism die a quick, painless death- cuz it sure has strangled us all out, hasn't it?!?!? Like Republican Governor Doug Ducey sending all of us democrats to the polls —sites of mass infections- instead of delaying the primaries! Kapitalism can GFI! If Nietzsche were alive, that's what he'd say & report. In this podcast, I cite many examples from nature & current events to show ways COMPETITION CAN KILL. To be sure, KAPITALISM IS KILLING US SOFTLY— from withheld PPE for our nation's first responders; Benny White's dirty GOP tricks to block my ballot access & this attacking civil liberties; to Sheriff Napier suppressing my podcast series; these criminals in power all want to SHUT US UP, silence our voices, kill us with their incompetence & criminal neglect of their duties. It's not even just a partisan thing; #DNCisCorrupt, too. When we had a media, it reported student vote purges in Ohio; The #IowaFiasco was #electionfraud, plain as the nose on yer face! And it produced a FRAUDULENT ‘Winner' that night & in #NewHampshire, too. If somebody -ANYBODY — called the DNC on their sh*t from the start, maybe it would've stopped, & we'd actually have FEEE AND DAIRE AND SfeRlections. But noooo, #Mayorcheat. Then there's HEALTH ‘insurance' companies competing with each other to get us to throw money at them every month so they can bankrupt & kill patients; Other points of interest in this podcast: I announce a few of cabinet appointments for when I'm PRESIDENT :). But for now at least, ‘SOMETHING IS ROTTEN IN THE STATE OF UNITED'; I cite examples from nature and me pets: My pet peacock Zaphod nearly pecked to death my silver pheasant, Mr Fezzie cuz Fez was fryin to bang his gf. They are MALES, and Males kill each other over competition. Fezzie stuffed himself in between two fences tryin to escape, would've died of fright alone if I hadn't intervened. Zaphod trying to eliminate competition for his Lady, Eccentricca2; Let's use a Native American context: indigenous peoples were destroyed when Andrew Jackson wanted to implement the White Man's Manifest Destiny. So Down With Kapitalism! It sucked ass, anyway --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Welcome back to the manor, as we sit once more along the side the pools, just outside the Megadodo Publications offices on Ursa Minor, nursing hangovers from too many Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters that were made by a fun-loving two headed man.  We didn't ask if he had two of anything else.     In the last part of our ever expanding trilogy, we geek out in general.  What did you expect? He'd had his immortality thrust upon him by an unfortunate accident with an irrational particle accelerator, a liquid lunch and a pair of rubber bands. We are back for Season 2 covering the classic Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. We are happy to be back and are thrilled to discuss the basics of hitchhiking across the galaxy, which medium we prefer the story to be in, and why extra creepy parts were added to the movie.   Episode Drink: Pan Galatic Garbel Blaster   1TBL Gin 1TBL light rum 1 TBL vodka 1TBL tequila 2 TBL creme de menth liqueur 2TBL Galliano 1 cup ice cubes 1 slice of lemon   Side note: We recognize that the typical way drink recipes are written are in ounces so we looked it up and one ounce is equal to two tablespoons. For those of your measuring along at home, the one tablespoon alcohols all get half an ounce in this recipe and the two tablespooners get a full ounce.   Combine the gin, rum, vodka, tequila, creme de menthe, Galliano and ice in the container of a blender. Cover, and blend until slushy. Pour into a glass and garnish with a slice of lemon.   Recipe: https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/76897/pangalactic-gargleblaster/   Our Drinking Game for this Story: Take a drink when: The Hitchhiker's Guide is quoted The improbability drive is used Every time you see a towel Arthur is confused Ford or Zaphod doesn't understand something that was just said to them     (So basically anytime any of the men are holding the story back?)   And knock back your drink when you just understand Marvin. Like, you get him. This makes sense to you.   Please drink responsibly! Hail hydrate.   What's Making Us Happy This Week; Or Podcasts that we are feeling. R R is a velocity measure, defined as a reasonable speed of travel that is consistent with health, mental wellbeing and not being more than, say, five minutes late. It is therefore clearly an almost infinitely variable figure according to circumstances, since the first two factors vary not only with speed taken as an absolute, but also with awareness of the third factor. Radiation Swamps of Cwulzenda The Radiation Swamps of Cwulzenda were a site of battles between the Silastic Armorfiends of Striterax and the Strenuous Garfighters of Stug, both of which I think we'll be covering later.

If you could meet five people you admire from the past, people who are dead, who would they be? Pitney was tasked with this exercise and it stumped him. We thought of all sorts of dead folks we would want to meet and what we would talk to them about. But mostly we talked about what dead people we'd like to have as guests on our show! For example, did you know your grandfathers? Pitney and Amelia didn't know theirs. One was a really interesting dude who has some 'splainin to do about minstrel shows! What was much easier was to come up with fictional characters we would want to hang out with. After all, who wouldn't want to hitchhike the galaxy with Ford Prefect? And finally, human nature. Are we good or are we bad? The answer might surprise and depress you. Promos: Chewed Gum Podcast  and the 2 Skeptical Chaps! (Want to swap show promos? Email us!) We love you for listening! Oolon Colluphid Oolon Colluphid is the author of heretical works of non-fiction. We've covered many of his books already, but titles include Where God Went Wrong , Some More of God's Greatest Mistakes and Who is this God Person Anyway? Orion Beta Orion Beta is noted for its madronite mining belts, where Ford learned to play a drinking game involving telekenesis and obsene forfeits. Pangalactic garbleblaster The Pangalactic Garbleblaster is the best drink in existence, according to the Guide. Parallel Universes Now, the Guide has had a great deal to say on the subject of parallel universes. Very little of this is, however, at all comprehensible to anyone below the level of Advanced God. The first thing to realise about parallel universes, the Guide says, is that they are not parallel, because being parallel doesn't mean anything. It's all part of the Whole Sort of General Mishmash, but I thought it worth bringing up since it's sort of noteable by its absencen. Paralys-o-Matic The Paralyse-o-Matic is a bomb of some sort. Zaphod throws one into the crowd that comes to watch the uneiling of the Heart of Gold. Parties In the third book, Arthur gets hit in the small of the back by a party that's into its fourth generation, and has taken to conducting raiding parties of nearby planets, depleating them of stocks of cheesey snacks and booze. Mark Steadman, Jon Hickman and Danny Smith continue their mission to discuss everything in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy canon , in alphabetical order. Fortillian Bantoburn O'Perfluous The BarBot of the Starship Titanic, played by Dermot Crowley (from Luther, among other things). In the game, he mixes your character a bizarre cocktail that ends up helping to fix the ship. Here, Danny runs the team through some working class cocktails. Frastra Where they say “life begins at 40,000 degrees”. This planet has fire storms, and an equable temperature is between 40,000 and 40,004 degrees. Mark asks the question of the kind of lifeforms one might expect to find on Frastra, bearing in mind that the tardigrade can only hack it up to 148.9℃. Frogstar Frogstar World B is quite staggeringly nasty, and is where Zaphod is dragged to before being put in the Total Perspective Vortex (to which we'll come in a later episode). This planet gives us a bit of a continuity headache, as our characters happen upon it in very different ways, depending on whether you've read the book or listened to the second radio series. Frood A frood is a really amazingly together guy. And that's about all the time there is for this segment. Fuolornis Fire Dragon The team discusses the sexiness - or complete lack thereof - of flying bescaled fire-breathing lizards. And Dire Straits. Gag Halfrunt Gag Halfrunt is Zaphod and Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz's private brain-care specialist, and the man who employed Jeltz to destroy the Earth. He's played by Stephen Moore in the radio series and is the man who utters the immortal words “ah, Zaphod's just this guy, y'know?” which is one of very few Hitchhiker's catchphrases. Danny helps Mark understand how wrong he is to like this character, given that he is quite a bit evil. Jeff has a agenda but lets face it we only care about the cool stories!    IN THIS PARTICULAR EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN:     Zaphod Beetlebrock is not really the guest's identity and for legit reasons, he stays anonymous to all but those familiar with him.   Jeff was the holder of the title "RPG Magnet" and folks this is just a little of the reason he has been so far un challenged with a total of 18 near strikes and over 20 misses from the bad training of the enemy gunners.   Jeff is not the Bullet magnet however that is apparently some Green Beret named Bobby.   B movies are not the source of advisable tactics unless your a third world lunatic with a good heart.   Tony Soprano has an Afghan counterpart.   Jeff is reluctant to speak of his glorious awards but Eddie and Bennet have rights to force him to talk about it eventually. Plus he promised them...   Your phone is the best weapon against suicide... use it and if called pick it up!   Jeff played High School football (played is a loose term) on a team with an awesome guy from a great family. the guy has a Superbowl Winner for a younger Brother and Jeff endorses his new book.    LINKS AND RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: Find links to this episode's content here:   Order Superbowl champion and friend of Jeff's Kieth O'Neil's  Book: Under My Helmet   Battle of Debeka Pass link (only because Zaphod let is slip, unpurpose/accident) Jeff's claim to Special Forces fame (only to himself and his kids!)   Books about Jeffs uneasy fame prior to the show: Heroes Among Us Roughneck Nine-one War Stories of The Green Berets (Updated Edition) Follow Zaphod:   You Must Be Kidding! Arcturan megagin Three cubes of which are added to panhgalactic gargleblaster. Here's what it might look like, and here's an Instructables piece on the ingredient. Arcturan megagrasshopper Used as a comparative phrase, as in “ankle-high to a…”, so we discuss some of the Dad-based anachronisms from our past. Arcturan megaleach Another large animal that should be small, but since it's spelt “leach” not “leech”, we falsely accuse Danny of emptying our wallets on nights out.
