Four former Transnet executives are appearing in the Palm Ridge Magistrates court, in Ekurhuleni after handing themselves over to police this morning. Their appearance is linked to an alleged fraudulent 93-million-rand locomotive tender. In 2012, Transnet went on a tender for the acquisition of the more than one-thousand locomotives deal. The executives are charged in connection with an irregular payment of R93,4 million to Trillian Asset management for organising a R30 billion loan to help buy locomotives. It's alleged it was a double payment as Transnet had already paid another transaction advisory firm - Regiments. Trillian allegedly did nothing to earn the fee but invoiced Transnet.

The Gauteng Provincial Government has been tapping into a vast CCTV camera network to fight the high levels of crime in the province. In this interview with BizNews, Michael Varney, the Chief Commercial Officer of Vumacam, details the size of the network which has spread throughout Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, Tshwane, Mogale - and now even into the Western Cape where it has planted its first network in conjunction with the Saldanha Bay Municipality. He details the “multitude of successes” achieved with the public-private partnership in Gauteng where it has been able to reduce response times from 18 to 30 minutes down to five to 10 minutes. As for the technology, apart from number plate recognition cameras, there are also overview cameras that pick up suspicious behaviour as well as smoke in a city notorious for building fires. “…the minute smoke is picked up, we're able then to create an alert and dispatch appropriately, leading to enormous successes in the prevention of the loss of life.”

This evening on Legal matters we look at father's right to get access/custody to their children and this is sparked by the recent case of Pastor Mboro's son forcefully taking his kids from their primary school. On Monday morning, 7th August 2024, Mboro, his son and his bodyguard went to Matshediso Primary School in Ekurhuleni wielding a rifle and pangas, intimidating teachers and traumatising learners. The pastor is involved in an ongoing custody dispute, which is proving to be messy, after the mother of the children died earlier this year. It's been reported that Mboro covered some of the funeral costs.
