The deputy Chief of Police in the City of Ekurhuleni Brigadier Julius Mkhwanazi was at the centre of the Madlanga Commission yesterday. This for his links with attempted murder accused and alleged cartel member Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala. Testimony before the Madlanga Commission has demonstrated that Brigadier Mkhwanazi signed two memorandums of understanding with Matlala's security company. This was done without the authority of suspended Ekurhuleni police Chief Jabulani Mapiyeye. Mapiyeye took to the stand on Thursday to testify about the challenges encountered in the City of Ekurhuleni during that time. The Ekurhuleni City Council met yesterday to decide on the suspension of EMPD Deputy Chief Brigadier Julius Mkhwanazi. The motion follows allegations that Mkhwanazi supplied police blue lights to alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala, which were installed on Matlala's personal vehicles in 2023. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate recommended disciplinary action against Mkhwanazi over a year ago, but no action has been taken. In a landmark clash over land rights, the City of Ekurhuleni's 2019 expropriation of a 34-hectare plot in Driefontein, Boksburg, will head to court as South Africa's first major test of expropriation without compensation. The municipality reportedly seized portion 406 of Driefontein Farm, valued between R30 million and R64 million, to build social housing for landless residents. The DA in Gauteng has expressed concern over Alra Park Primary School in Nigel, Ekurhuleni, where learners have missed three weeks of school due to protests over unsafe conditions. The Gauteng Department of Education has been criticized for its slow response.
