Defenders of the People (DOP) has raised alarm over a long-standing housing crisis affecting approximately 300 households in Winnie Mandela Section, Olifantsfontein, where multiple families have allegedly been allocated to a single residential stand, creating overcrowding, conflict and uncertainty. The party says generations of residents have been forced to live under a controversial "two-in-one" arrangement, while successive administrations in the City of Ekurhuleni have failed to provide a lasting solution. DOP has since initiated discussions with municipal authorities, demanding urgent intervention and greater transparency in efforts to resolve the matter. We spoke to DOP National Spokesperson, Councillor Samuel Mokalapa.

President Cyril Ramaphosa says business played a significant role in ending load shedding in South Africa. IPID has arrested five suspects, including members of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department, SAPS and a private citizen, over the 2022 murder of Emmanuel Mbense. They face charges of murder and defeating the ends of justice, and are expected to appear in the Brakpan Magistrate's Court today. Mbense disappeared after a police raid at his home in April 2022, and his body was later found at Spaarwater Dam in Duduza, Ekurhuleni.

Former Ekurhuleni City Manager, Dr. Imogen Mashazi is expected to apply for bail in the Germiston Magistrate's Court this morning. She and co-accused Linda Gxasheka spent the night in custody after the state asked for time to verify their addresses. Mashazi faces charges of fraud, corruption. The African Christian Democratic Party, ACDP in Ekurhuleni is calling for accountability and swift justice following recent arrests of senior municipal officials. ACDP councillor Palesa Yates says those arrested must have their day in court after the spotlight placed on governance issues by the Madlanga Commission. In the latest edition of The Electoral Road Show, Chris Steyn and elections analyst Wayne Sussman talk about Ekurhuleni finally managing to pass a R71-billion budget thanks to the Democratic Alliance (DA) supporting the African National Congress (ANC). Sussman warns: “...we know the Freedom Front did far better in Ekurhuleni than the City of Johannesburg in 2021. And they could also say, look, the DA and the ANC are the exact same, there's no difference, vote for us. We will stand up to the ANC. So on the one hand, the DA is saying they're acting in the residents' interest, they're acting in service delivery' interests, but critics of the ANC and DA will paint another picture.” Sussman also analyses the results of last night by-elections in which both the ANC and the DA held wards with “the DA laying down a marker to the Freedom Front in the Northwest, and the ANC certainly making a big point with its strong showing in Bushbuckridge”. As for the spate of killings of politicians and activists over the past registration weekend, he says “it is plausible that these might be politically motivated hits”.
