The events of last week's thrilling episode have taken their toll on Paul & Eli this week. They're so tired out, they forgot to plan something to do and to make things worse, they are not in “the zone”! Thankfully (or not), Eli has something up his sleeve to “enhance” their “performance” and it may end up giving them both a false sense of confidence. If the stuff works at all! It's a snack packed episode anyway, with the Cheap Chaps munching through hot habanero potato rings, Japanese Kit Kats, Cheesy Takis and a fair few hot sauces too! And finally, after MANY MANY threats to the Coca Cola company, Eli has got his mitts on some Orange Cream flavoured cans! Oh, lucky day! It's time to get our munch on. A man throws up in a taxi on his way to an interview. He is nervous because he is about to make an argument. It's an argument that would change politics forever. His name was Keith Joseph. And this would be the start of a radical journey - from conventional conservative politician to ideological warrior and guru for Margaret Thatcher. Joseph set out on a tour of the country. He had eggs thrown at him, Marxist flags waved in his face. He was spat at. Heckled. All because he was arguing for one thing - the free markets.David Dimbleby traces the history of an idea that spans his life. It started on a chicken farm in Sussex, gained traction in the shadows of post-war London and rose to heights of excess in the new champagne bars of the City. It's 2025 and this once radical idea now defines every aspect of life in Britain. An idea that transformed the economy, politics and, ultimately, society itself. But how did it happen? Who are the little-known people behind it? What did they want? And - as Donald Trump threatens to overturn the global economic system - is the free market here to stay? Or are we entering a new era?Presenter: David Dimbleby Producer: Jo Barratt Executive Producers and Story Editors: Joe Sykes and Dasha Lisitsina Sound design: Peregrine Andrews Commissioning Editor: Dan ClarkeA Samizdat Audio production for BBC Radio 4
At the age of 16 Joe Lynskey joined a monastery with the intention of becoming a Cisterian monk. He spent six years in Mount Melleray monastery in Waterford but he decided to leave the order. He joined the IRA instead. He became a founding member of the Provisional IRA and the intelligence officer for the Belfast Brigade. They called him ‘the Mad Monk' but he also reclaimed the youth he had abandoned to the monastery and pursued women. On Free State today, Joe and Dion tell the story of how Joe Lynskey went from monk to becoming the first of The Disappeared. They look at how Joe Lynskey's love affairs led to an extraordinary sequence of events that sealed his fate. They examine the role of Dolours Price in the story and the trauma and bonds that tied her to Joe Lynskey. Lynskey's family suffered from the cruelty of his disappearance and murder, as well as the stories spun to keep the truth from them. But more than 50 years since Joe Lynskey's killing, how many knew the truth?Free State with Joe Brolly and Dion Fanning is a Gold Hat Production in association with SwanMcG.For more on Free State: https://freestatepodcast.com/ Hosted on Acast. In our third Halloween-themed episode this month, Varun (playing podcast host) and Dhruv discuss a sub-genre of British horror films best characterized as a cross between classy and exploitation horror. (Think, as Varun says, "somewhere between the B-movie camp classics made by the Ramsay Brothers and Edgar Wright's "Last Night in Soho"). Treating this episode as our introduction to this sub-genre of films produced under the Hammer Production banner (which gives it the name - Hammer Horror!), we first talk about the origin of their horror films in the 50s. Then, we specifically talk about two films (out of a gazillion) that they made in their glory days of the late 50s and 60s. The first, actually very good one is Terence Fischer's adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, titled "Horror of Dracula" in the U.S; the second is Don Sharp's rudderless "Rasputin - The Mad Monk," which both Varun and Dhruv call one of the most "boring" horror films you could make on a character whose life is so full of incident and excitement. Listen to the full episode to hear us talk about why one of them works while the other doesn't and what exactly is the appeal (and limitation) of Hammer Horror films today! In today's episode Ben and producer Andrew Jacobs enter the dark and mysterious world of Rasputin the "mad monk", the mystic who wielded unearthly influence over the Russian royal family and became one of history's most infamous figures. Rasputin's rise from a Siberian peasant to the confidant of the Romanovs shocked the Russian Empire and fueled countless rumors of sorcery, scandal, and seduction, all leading up to the dramatic plot to end his life—if only he'd stay dead. Brace yourself for a tale of faith, power, and the collapse of an empire, centered around the man who seemed to defy fate itself.

One of the earliest foes that Batman ever faced was the vampire known as The Monk who, at the end of his first storyline, Batman killed. With a gun. It was the Golden Age. But death has never kept a comic book character down, and with alternate Earths and reboot, The Monk has returned in very different forms multiple times. Patreon backer Tim Rooney asked us to cover the Bronze Age Monk story, and so we tossed in the original Monk story and another Monk appearance to make this vampirific episode. On this episode we discuss one of the most maligned and mysterious figures from modern history; a man who is as famous for his death as for his life, and someone like him would put the willies up anyone in power because he was an uncontrollable and unpredictable force; this episode is all about Rasputin. Shambling into St Petersburg from the Siberian countryside in the early days of the 20th century; is how most people would view the tale of Rasputin; but the truth is often stranger. As part of a campaign of popularity and spectacle in a turn of the century royal socialite influencer class, Rasputin was invited to the royal court as part of some sort of esoteric oddity and was so charming he managed to become one of the Tsarinas closest advisors. Rasputins massive shlong and love making prowess is also part of the legend and this, along with his unroyal blood made the movers and shakers in Romanov controlled Russia quite nervous. Rasputin was rumoured to be utterly debauched and his strange unkempt appearance, his uncouth charm and his loose morals meant that he was a threat to the status quo. The legendary tale of the assassination of Rasputin probably over shadows anything he did in life and is itself wrought with rumour and inconsistency. Murdered by jealous royal in-laws, Rasputin's legend endures and we go deep and long on it for this episode! ________________________ Joining me for this one are comedians Tom O'Mahony and Micky Bartlett and we get deep on The Mad Monk. The importance of the movie poster is almost lost in this day and age. With the internet flooding social media with trailers, photos, and all sorts of advertisements, the poster art might get lost in the shuffle. But decades ago, it was the first thing used to promote an upcoming feature film. It had to reach out and grab hold of your eyes, telling your brain you need to see this film. Shortly after that, the poster collecting started. Why do we collect posters? What kinds are there? What is it about it that still holds a spell over movie goers? Join us and our special guest, Alan Tromp, as we try to answer all of those questions and more, as we discuss our own obsessions with movie posters, from one-sheets to British Quads to the French Grande size! This is the fourteenth installment in Eric Ludy's epic summer Daily Thunder series entitled Spiritual Lessons from WW1. This episode takes us to St. Petersburg, Russia in 1914 and some strange goings on in the royal palace. It involves an insecure King, a fretful Queen, a sickly boy, and a Mad Monk. It is a story that is both bizarre and powerfully convicting. For like Nicholas and Alexandra, many of us have allowed the “Mad Monk” into our own living rooms under the auspices of crazy justification.
You know what makes for a toxic mix? Political power and spiritualism! Which is right where we land with today's story of a man known as the Mad Monk: fugitive, fortune teller, and self-proclaimed healer. Christine and Em mull over the imperial influence and wild rumors surrounding the ever-controversial figure... Rasputin. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Was Rasputin a depraved occultist charlatan who lied his way in to the Russian royal family, or a gifted holy man with the divine power to heal? On this episode Lee and Nathan try to answer that question, and also spend a surprisingly long time trying to establish how Rasputin smelled.
Bridget tells Mollie about the end of Rasputin - hint: that's a double entendre. Rate & Review us on Apple Want more? Support us on Patreon!

Maria Rasputin eluded capture and certain death in Russia, going on to live many lives, as a cabaret dancer, a lion tamer and even an author. In fact, Grigori Rasputin's daughter may even be far more interesting than the Mad Monk. Staring Noel Willman, Ray Barrett, Jennifer Daniel and Jacqueline ‘Servalan' Pearce, The Reptile is based in the fictional village of Clagmoor Heath in Cornwall where several locals are dying from what is deemed to be the "Black Death". Harry Spalding inherits his late brother Charles' cottage and arrives with his new bride, Valerie. The inhabitants of the village keep clear of the couple and only the publican, Tom Bailey, befriends them. Tom explains that the hostility exhibited by the townspeople is the result of many mysterious deaths in the community. The sinister Dr. Franklyn, the owner of the nearby Well House, is the only resident in the vicinity of the cottage, and he lives with his daughter Anna and her menagerie of ‘pets'. Franklyn treats Anna with cruel contempt, and she is attended by a silent Malay servant. The production was filmed by Hammer, back to back with The Plague of the Zombies, using many of the same sets, including exterior shots in the grounds of Oakley Court near Bray, Berkshire (seen burning in the final frames). As documented in books on Hammer Film's history, Jacqueline Pearce disliked wearing the Infamous Reptile make-up as she suffered from claustrophobia. After this film, she vowed never to wear "creature" make-up in her future acting projects. The film was released in 1966 and in some markets was shown in a double feature with Rasputin, the Mad Monk.$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$Just in case anyone has too much money and wants to give a bit to us to help with our hosting n stuff. This week on Hammer Pub, your hosts will still be sitting down with yet another marvelous Hammer horror film while having a few drinks and providing a running commentary on a gothic horror classic. This week, they're joined by…wait. Hang on a sec. There aren't any guests this week! During this week's discussion, Paul and Jinx find themselves shrinking away from the steely gaze of Rasputin, the Mad Monk! Before their commentary, the guys chat about The Last American Virgin, Massacre at Central High, Clarice, The Cat and the Canary, the Psycho and Cabin Fever remakes, Monster Hunter, and the cinema of Paul W.S. Anderson. Once the film begins, the guys discuss their overall feelings on the film, the true life character and events which inspired it, Christopher Lee's marvelous performance, the recycled sets from Dracula: Prince of Darkness, and the film's surprising raciness. It's something a little different for Scream Addicts, but it's a commentary we hope you'll love!
