When Russia's Dowager Empress was pregnant with the future Tsar Nicholas II in 1868, she dreamed that a peasant would one day kill her son. The idea terrified her, and for the rest of her days she lived under the fear of this prophecy. It may have come true with the arrival at court of a mysterious, barely literate wandering monk from Siberia, Grigori Rasputin. He had a pale face, long hair and penetrating eyes gave him an almost hypnotic quality. Though he had no official position at court, Rasputin’s hold over the Romanovs became the stuff of legend. Exaggerated accounts of political and financial corruption swirled around him, to say nothing of the stories of his debauchery with the Empress and even her daughters. The consequences of the rumor and conspiracy theories were devastating—when the February revolution broke out in 1917, hardly a sword was raised in the Tsar’s defense. Today's guest is Antony Beevor, author of Rasputin: The Downfall of the Romanovs. We look at how Rasputin was able to wield such power, mostly by tricking the Royal Family into thinking he could heal Tsarevich Alexei’s hemorrhages. We also look at his legendary assassination, in which conspirators allegedly fed him cyanide-laced cakes, shooting him twice, and throwing him into the freezing Neva. Despite his death, nothing changed, as the Romanov dynasty collapsed three months later in the February Revolution and the entire family was murdered by Bolsheviks a year after that. De families Churchill en Kennedy konden nauwelijks meer van elkaar verschillen in achtergrond, politieke opvattingen en familiegeschiedenis, maar werden als magneten tot elkaar aangetrokken. Conflicten, politieke heibel, spionage, zakelijke deals, vriendschappen en liefdesaffaires vullen dit boek over die 'brullende leeuwen'. En als derde hoofdpersoon op de achtergrond speelt president Franklin D. Roosevelt een cruciale rol. Verrassende figuren komen in het boek naar voren, zoals Pamela Digby die van geliefde schoondochter van Churchill uiteindelijk via allerlei affaires en huwelijken een van de invloedrijkste politieke fundraisers werd voor de Democraten in Amerika. Haar 'ontdekking' was Bill Clinton. En de Griekse reder Aristoteles Onassis was een vriend en reisgenoot van de oude Winston Churchill en op zijn jacht reisde niet alleen Maria Callas mee, maar ook het jonge echtpaar JFK en Jackie. Later zou zij hem trouwen. Derde boek: 'Maria Theresa - Empress' van Richard Bassett (Yale University Press, 520 p.) Nog een dynastie en persoonlijkheid van de buitencategorie. De Habsburgse keizerin Maria Theresa - zij regeerde van 1740 tot 1780 - was een van de machtigste en boeiendste vrouwen van haar tijd. Zij moest als 23-jarige letterlijk vechten om haar vader te kunnen opvolgen en zijn erflanden te regeren. Daartoe behoorden Oostenrijk, Hongarije, grote delen van de Balkan, Bohemen, Moravië en Silezië, grote delen van Noord-Italië en het huidige België. Maria Theresa overleefde die strijd met panache en werd een belangrijk hervormer van het bestuur, de wetgeving, economie en financiën en zeer in het bijzonder het onderwijs aan haar onderdanen. Een van haar opvallendste eigenschappen was haar bijna onfeilbaar oog voor talent. En daarbij was zij allesbehalve eenkennig. Zelfs een Hongaarse wees die haar als roeier opviel, protegeerde zij en liet hem zijn talenten ontdekken, waardoor hij een van haar belangrijkste raadsheren werd. Haar politieke gevoel deed haar aan het eind van haar leven grote zorgen hebben over de Amerikaanse revolutie tegen koning George III. Indringend waarschuwde zij haar dochter Marie Antoinette voor wat zij in Frankrijk zag opdoemen. Had zij maar beter naar haar moeder geluisterd. Vierde boek: 'De Groote Vrede' van Wim de Wagt (Boom, 446 p.) Na de val van dynastieën als de Habsburgers en Romanovs werd Europa in Versailles geheel heringedeeld. Dit leidde tot grote onrust over de toekomst van die nieuwe staten en hun oudere buren. Dat werd de bron van een golf van idealisme om in die toekomst een verenigd Europa te laten ontstaan. Juist vanuit het neutrale Nederland werden vele impulsen daaraan gegeven. Opmerkelijk was de rol van captains of industry die zo'n eenwording als de oplossing zagen voor de economische ravage die Versailles had veroorzaakt. Hendrik Colijn was de meest gezaghebbende vanuit die kringen en werd nimmer moe wereldwijd te pleiten voor een douane-unie, afschaffing van handelstarieven en de belemmeringen van de nieuwe grenzen op het Europese continent. Een hoofdpersoon in dit boek is de Franse staatsman Aristide Briand, die vurig werkte aan verzoening met de Duitsers en een soort Interne Markt probeerde te vormen als een Jacques Delors avant la lettre. Het idealisme en de inzet werden niet beloond. Autoritaire heersers en wraakgevoelens zouden Europa nog een tweede keer verwoesten, maar na 1945 werden de lessen uit dat eerdere ideaal concreet gemaakt. Vijfde boek: 'A Village in the Third Reich' van Julia Boyd (Pegasus, 412 p.) Dat stadje is Oberstdorf in het zuiden van Beieren. Klassiek Alpendorp van boeren en burgers, behoudend, rooms en gehecht aan tradities. Maar dankzij de wintersport ook economisch, cultureel en menselijk verbonden met heel Europa, vooral de rijke toeristen. Hoe het nationaalsocialisme in die gemeenschap doordrong, de dictatuur ging overheersen en angst en wegkijken domineerden wordt in menselijke lotgevallen zichtbaar. De mensen leerden bidden "Lieber Gott, mach mich stumm, daß ich nicht in Dachau kumm.' Het stadje was niettemin ook trots op de overwinningen van zijn bergjagers in de Wehrmacht, al kostte hun alpinistische stunt in de Kaukasus hen bijna het leven, omdat Hitler woedend was. In Oberstdorf poogde men de dictatuur te overleven door elkaar waar mogelijk te beschermen, ook de joodse dorpsgenoten. Een unieke rol speelde daarbij een Nederlandse gravin, die verbonden was aan Koningin Wilhelmina. Haar kindersanatorium werd een schuilplaats voor vervolgden. Zesde boek: 'Dissonanten in het Concertgebouw' van Albert van der Schoot (Noordboek, 560 p.) Politiek en Klassieke Muziek, de luisteraars van Betrouwbare Bronnen zijn wel vertrouwd geraakt aan de innige relaties tussen die twee. Dit boek zit vol fascinerend verhalen, momenten, figuren en incidenten in die kunsttempel van onze hoofdstad. Want het gebouw wordt vaak benut voor alle mogelijke manifestaties, die ook recent nog tot heftig gedoe aanleiding gaven. Een paar voorbeelden slechts: de communistische herdenking in 1924 van Lenin bij zijn dood of het 25-jarig jubileumfeest om paus Leo XIII, de man van Rerum Novarum, in 1903 te vieren. De manifestatie voor de 70e verjaardag van Domela Nieuwenhuis in 1916 en die van de NSB in zomer 1944 om ‘trouwbetuiging aan den Führer’ te tonen na de bomaanslag op zijn leven. Ook de muziek zelf kon politieke heftige controverses opleveren. Zo weigerde het rode koor Stem des Volks in 1934 het Wilhelmus te zingen en was er een epische ruzie met Cosima Wagner die de opera 'Parsifal' van haar echtgenoot weigerde te laten uitvoeren in Amsterdam. En het is echt heel slecht geschreven, vond ook de Italiaanse journalist Benito Mussolini. Maar Mein Kampf is opnieuw actueel. De wordingsgeschiedenis, de titel, het verdienmodel en de worstelingen ermee na 1945 zijn een boek op zichzelf waard. Zonder de Britse sociaal-darwinistische schrijver Houston Stewart Chamberlain was het boek er nooit gekomen. Zijn schoonfamilie regelde zelfs dat Hitler in de cel het schrijfpapier ervoor kreeg. Jaap en PG duiken in diens merkwaardige leven, werk, netwerk en impact rond 1900 en in diens hysterische verering voor de jonge Führer. 2] Benjamin Duerr – De Droom van Den Haag (Atlas Contact, 2024) Het tweede boek gaat over de dromen van wereldvrede rond 1900 en de unieke rol daarin van Den Haag. Het begon met een jonge tsaar die zichzelf een vredesvorst waande. Zijn ministers hadden heel nuchtere, geopolitieke argumenten om decennia geen oorlogen te willen. Zijn nichtje, de net ingehuldigde koningin Wilhelmina, vond dat mystieke pacifisme maar lariekoek. Haar minister Willem Hendrik de Beaufort zat klem tussen deze twee Romanovs. Tegen vele klippen op kwamen er twee vredesconferenties op rij en Den Haag werd juist vanwege de saaiheid opvolger van Wenen 1814-1815. Niet alleen de tsaar spande zich in. Ook president Roosevelt van Amerika, zeker nadat hij een Nobelprijs kreeg voor vrede tussen militaristisch opkomend Japan en de door hen de verwoestend verslagen Russen. Die conferenties bleken verrassend productief. Het Vredespaleis kwam er. En nieuwe regels voor oorlogsrecht. 3] Sergey Radchenko – To run the world, the Kremlin’s Cold War bid for global power (Cambridge, 2024) De tsaar snakte naar vrede, maar hoe zat dat na zijn ondergang met de heersers in het Kremlin? Sergey vertelt het fascinerende verhaal van de ambities van de Sovjet-Unie en haar leiders na 1945. Over honger naar erkenning door Amerika, over de obsessie met Mao en Deng en over vrede met West-Duitsland om de EEG te breken. Het boek put uit vele archieven en inzichten die hier in het Westen nooit bekend waren. To run the world is ook een boek over duo's: rivalen die partners wilden zijn. Stalin en FDR. Mao en Chroesjtsjov. Chroesjtsjov en JFK. En vooral Nixon en Brezjnev. Met als apotheose hoe Reagan er in slaagde met Gorbatsjov aan de pretentie van zulke duo's een eind te maken en hoe Deng daar het meest van profiteerde. 4] Max Boot – Reagan, his Life and Legend (Liveright, 2024) Dit boek werpt nieuw licht op de oud-president van de VS. Een noodzakelijke biografie. Want in dit post-Reagantijdperk in Amerika en zijn Republikeinse partij is een nieuwe, gedistantieerde kijk op zijn betekenis en leven zeer welkom. “Mister Norm is my alias”, zei de man die voor iedereen óók een ster was met aantrekkingskracht uit de gouden jaren van Hollywood. Niemand kende hem daarom echt, op zijn Nancy na. Hij had politiek succes doordat hij uitermate pragmatisch was, verliezen kon slikken en toch als held van hoge principes en idealisme kon blijven stralen. Zo kon hij bijna moeiteloos het Kremlin als 'the Evil Empire' beschimpen en met Moskou samen de voorraad kernraketten fors verminderen, terwijl hij eveneens hightech fantasieën uit zijn oude films werkelijkheid wilde laten worden. Ook hier realist, pragmaticus en visionair tegelijk: “Trust, but verify!” Zijn verbindende warme stijl en zijn aura van idealisme zorgden ervoor dat hij beginselen als vrijhandel, kansen voor vluchtelingen en immigranten en respect voor bondgenoten glans gaf. In het Trump-tijdperk lijkt Reagan inmiddels iemand uit een vergeten verleden. 5] Anne Somerset – Queen Victoria and Her Prime Ministers (William Collins, 2024) Meer dan zestig jaar wereldmacht, dynastie, intriges en een flamboyant karakter. ‘She reigns but does not rule’ was volgens Anne Somerset een fraaie verpakking voor heel veel complexe en soms heftige politieke toestanden. Ze versleet maar liefst tien premiers. Ze verfoeide Lord Palmerston - die haar manipuleerde - en William Gladstone nog meer. Ze was dol op haar leermeester, ‘Lord M’, en nog meer op 'mijn coauteur' Benjamin Disraeli. Zij manipuleerden elkaar en genoten er schaamteloos van. Ten diepste was de vorstin gewoon dol op politiek, hoe zwaar ze tegen die heren ook zuchtte en klaagde. Somerset toont nog iets. Victoria was buitengewoon toegewijd. Van haar man, 'darling Albert', keek ze af hoe je focust op de essentie, daarbij desnoods koppig bent en ministers te overrompelt met visies en memo's die al klaar lagen voordat die een probleem zagen aankomen. 6] Jasper Dekker, Alexander van Kessel en Afke Groen (red.) – De minister-president, een ambt in ontwikkeling (Boom, 2025) Buitengewoon instructief is de analyse door Jelle Gaemers van de effectiviteit van Willem Drees als minister president. Voor de opvolger van Dick Schoof essentiële, onmisbare lectuur. Ook de gedurfde poging door Ronald Kroeze tot een eerste summa van veertien jaar premier Mark Rutte maakt de bundel de moeite waard. Op de gedachte dat Rutte wel degelijk visie had, maar deze liefst verborg omwille van het VVD-belang, kan nog wel een tijdje gekauwd worden. 7] Thomas Mann – Achtung Europa! Een eigentijdse waarschuwing (Arbeiderspers, 2025) Thomas Mann - favoriet van Mark Rutte - is 150 jaar geleden geboren. Zijn furieus, literair briljant verzet tegen die auteur van Mein Kampf trekt aandacht, mede dankzij de eerste Nederlandse vertaling van zijn bundel Achtung Europa!. Voortreffelijk hoe Arnon Grunberg daarbij ook de eigenaardigheden van de grote schrijver niet veronachtzaamt. PG haalt nog iets erbij: de eerste druk uit 1938 uit zijn persoonlijke collectie. En nóg zo'n letterkundig juweel, want deze nieuwe vertaling biedt meer voor de lezer - zelfs nu nog - en dat komt uit een ander boek van Thomas Mann. Meest verbluffend is hoe Mann zich durft te verdiepen in en vereenzelvigen met Adolf Hitler. Zag deze zich niet vooral ook als een kunstenaar, een bohemien? Zat in niet elke artistieke geest wat vertekend en duivels verziekt in deze politieke extremist zit? Geen tijdgenoot heeft zo briljant, zo ijskoud en ook zelfkritisch durven kijken naar 'Broeder Hitler', de tiran als verwante ziel. En wat verbindt Victoria, Mann, Rutte, Stalin en Hitler? Operaliefde. Trump is their dirty little secret, the forbidden fruit, the dance with the Devil.The first version of Trump sold to us was that he was a raging racist because of the Obama birther story and other myths that helped create an existential crisis that required a “hearts and minds” effort to eradicate:That version led to violent attacks against Trump supporters in 2015.The next version was that he wasn't a playboy from the 1980s who could get any woman he wanted; no, he was a “rapist” thanks to the Access Hollywood tape and the multiple women who came forward to tell their stories, none of them believable.That led to the #MeToo movement, where due process and the presumption of innocence were disregarded, as once accused, forever guilty. You weren't accused of something; you were accused of being something. It was inside of you, spectral evidence, just like the witch trials in Salem. Every time someone was canceled in effigy of Trump, just as the hangings in Salem, it was a celebration for another battle won against an ultimate evil.One version of Trump made it all the way into the highest reaches of government. Imagine, a failed attempt to paint Trump as colluding with the Russians to win an election fell short, so they had to spin a yarn that the racist and rapist was also a Russian asset, compromised by kompromat.I believed it! I'd already bought the books on Putin in late 2016, how could it not be true? Rachel Maddow had told me night after night after night, laying it all out in painstaking detail. Here she is in June of 2016 dropping those breadcrumbs. Of course, I believed it because I believed her. I trusted her. I trusted them. They wouldn't lie to me, would they?The Clinton campaign even said so. They proved it with the changes made to the GOP platform to please Putin. That had to be true, right?No, it turns out. It wasn't true—none of it. Not only that, but it involved Barack Obama and his henchmen. If the lie that Trump was a Putin puppet resulted in Hillary's win, great. But what if she lost? Why not push out the lie anyway? Why not hobble Trump at the outset?Why not make him illegitimate just as he once suggested Obama's birth certificate was? Who wouldn't go along with it? We were all conditioned to follow the breadcrumbs and believe whatever they told us about Trump, so why wouldn't we believe this?It turned out to be a convenient pivot. It didn't have to be that Hillary Clinton was a high-risk candidate with more baggage than the Kardashians on a ski trip to Aspen. She was “likable enough,”up against a once-in-a-generation political talent like Trump.It didn't need to be the Clinton campaign's decision to focus on Georgia rather than Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. After all, the New York Times said she couldn't lose.Someone as powerful as Obama, a man we all treated like a god, could not lose to Donald Trump. He couldn't have stood on stage with Katy Perry and Bruce Springsteen and had an election go that badly. None of them could stand it, not in the FBI, not in the legacy media, not any of us.No, it had to be Putin.In reality, it was actually much less complicated. It was a one-in-a-million strategy laid out by Steve Bannon way back in 2012:They had to manufacture the Russiagate story because they couldn't face the ugly truth about what they had become, how they'd abandoned the rest of this country and insulated themselves in their castle in the sky. By the end, they were no different from other upended aristocracies when the people had had enough.This is not a complicated story if you are living in reality. The 2016 election recalled the infamous quote about the lavish ball held in honor of the 290th anniversary of the House of the Romanovs held in the Winter Palace, Saint Petersburg. But it was a moment that would symbolize the empire's ultimate collapse.While Democrats now have to fend off their own Communist uprising, 2016 wasn't one. It was the populists, a genuine grassroots movement that reflected the voice of a country that was sick of an elite ruling class lecturing them about how to speak, how to live, and what to believe in. Sneering at them. Judging them. Shutting them out.And yet, that couldn't be the reason Trump won. It couldn't be the people who made that decision. The people never decide, at least not when it comes to President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. They live by another quote, one from Citizen Kane:“People will think…””What I tell them to think.”The Russiagate lie was pushed through the feedback loop —a self-contained bubble that went from morning news, through the churn of social media, to legacy media headlines, up to cable news and late-night “comedy.”Those who questioned it, such as Matt Taibbi, Walter Kirn, and Aaron Mate, saw their careers evaporate, and their friends turned against them.Even after the entire thing was exposed and condemned in the Columbia Journalism Review, it hasn't made its way into the bubble. Did you know that Joseph Stalin could sing with perfect pitch? Or that he was so scared of his wife that he would hide from her in the bathroom? Did you know that Peter the Great liked to surround himself with naked dwarfs? Did you know that Catherine the Great—long smeared as a nymphomaniac—was actually a lovelorn monogamist? Or that King Herod's genitals once exploded with maggots? Most historians bore you with dry accounts of battles and treaties, and it's hard to remember any of it.
