#LetsTalkWBS: Life As A Freelancer With Temitope C Samuel. In this episode, I have my first interviewe with one of Upworks top rated writers, how he pulls off the entire freelancing "tingy"
Do you know how many freelancers were created during the pandemic? What does it mean for the workforce? Carl shares some trends to watch out for. Read full transcript: Hi everyone, Carl Gould here with your #70secondCEO. Just a little over a one minute investment every day for a lifetime of results. There are fifty seven million freelancers working in the United States right now, that is up according to Upworks well over 20% and there an additional 2 million people who said that they had done freelance work during the pandemic, so here's what we're noticing. People were working remote and hybrid, right? During the pandemic, guess what they started doing? Side hustles from home. Can't go in the office and have your side hustle, so now they're gonna go back to the office, I can't do my side gig anymore, my side hustle. Well now I wanna work from home or I found--I can make equal if not more money at home then I did at my job so I'll quit and start my freelance business or I wanna stay home so I could still work my side hustle, that's happening a lot more than people are realize and we now have a third of the workforce has claim to have done a side hustle or--or a project remotely during the pandemic, think of that a third of the--a third of the employee base. Like and follow this podcast so you can learn more. My name is Carl Gould and this has been your #70secondCEO.
Will decentralized marketplaces built on crypto protocols replace the Ubers, Doordashes, and Upworks we have today? That's what we're talking about on this episode with Braintrust founder Adam Jackson. Braintrust is a decentralized protocol for hiring. It matches tech workers with companies like Porsche, Nike, and Goldman Sachs. We dive into tokens and designing token economies, governance for crypto projects, the potential moats for these projects - or lack there of, and start to scratch the surface on what it takes to bootstrap a crypto project like this. Braintrust is a little bit like Upwork but it's designed as a decentralized crypto project. So there is no single company. Braintrust doesn't make profits and isn't beholden to shareholders. That allows it to charge zero fees to talent and only a 10% fee to companies. Unlike the Ubers and Doordashes and Upworks that charge fees to both gig workers and the end consumer - because they need to make money and maybe one day even a profit - a marketplace run on a decentralized protocol doesn't need to make money. The protocol is just a piece of infrastructure and the people who contribute to the network own the network via tokens. There is no CEO. Decisions are made by a vote. Now this is where the crypto rabbit hole starts to get deep, but suffice to say this was a fascinating conversation, so I hope you enjoy this episode with Adam Jackson at Braintrust.
In this episode, Sheldon give 5 ways that the location independent consultant can make money on the road. 1) OSHA compliance work 2)Gig work 3) SME 4) Products 5) Advertising revenue.

How do we keep track of our priorities? How do we know what we should be prioritizing in the first place? Are there places you can make those priorities more efficient? These are all questions Jill is tackling in today’s episode. Making your business run smoothly while maintaining your sanity is essential. Let’s break down how you can do just that. First things first: organize your task list and identify things that will take you two minutes or less. This time is longer than it seems with it’s hyper-focused. You’d be surprised at how much you can get done in that much time or less. These tasks can quickly fall through the cracks if you don’t get them out of the way first. Once you’ve done that, you can start looking at tasks that you just don’t have the skillset to complete efficiently. These are the things you need to delegate. You can consider looking at members of your existing team who fill the niche you need to be filled. There is a good chance someone who isn’t you is specialized in the work you need to be done. Successful teams have a diverse set of skills so things can get covered and can save you money. If you aren’t able to find someone on your team, try checking out sites like Fiverr or Upworks for a person who can support your business. From an efficiency standpoint, you’re winning here. From a money-saving standpoint, you’re winning. Plus, you’re supporting other small businesses at the same time. Once you’ve narrowed it down to your remaining tasks, Jill suggests blocking out time to ensure you can work uninterrupted. By blocking out time for these things, you make sure you’re on top of what needs to get done. When you’re working on things sporadically it’s easy to lose your train of thought and will lead to tasks being left unfinished or taking more time than they need to. So, by blocking out this time, you’re saving even more money. Keep an eye out for Jill’s downloadable PDF infographic of her Get Clear system! Freelancer and Upworks are sites to do work at home jobs from, using any skills and tools you have at your disposal. They are also sites where you can find qualified workers that can do jobs for you at affordable rates. Both are Excellent platforms to have a second gig or to work fulltime from home. Now, when you wantto learn something new to tighten up your skills, I first start with Youtube. In this episode, Marc answers questions with his trusty sidekick, Elizabeth Rabaey. You can learn about her career pivots in Episode 020. Listen in to this episode for ideas on planning a freelance path, whether you need a Bachelor’s degree when you have the experience, and volunteering and networking at a not-for-profit. Key Takeaways: [2:40] Elizabeth introduces herself. Through an assessment, Marc helped Elizabeth find and connect with her creativity. After pivoting, she is the marketing coordinator for an international company. She uses Adobe InDesign to create marketing materials. [4:14] Q1: I am out of work for two-and-a-half years after surgeries. I am completely recovered. I am an illustrator/designer and have worked in several industries. [4:56] I have been reaching out to my network. I adjust my resume for every opportunity. I am getting no response. There is no human connection in the application process. I would love to work freelance but have no sales ability. How do I find opportunities? [5:42] A1: Marc notes that people in that situation apply for jobs, but graphic design jobs are few. There are lots of freelance gigs. Marc suggests looking at Upworks and other freelance broker sites. They have a rating system, so you need to get some gigs on there and get good ratings. Look for local freelance groups and creative meetups. [7:07] Look at creative communities, such as Adobe users. These will vary by location. If you still want to apply for a job, look for people on LinkedIn who “look like you” and find out where they work. Those are potential employers. The key is to go talk to employees or freelancers about how they get work. Freelance groups have business workshops. [10:32] Q2: I just turned 60. Unless I can find someone to take care of me financially, I will have to return to work. I have a Project Management Planner (PMP) certificate, but every job seems to require a BA. I don’t want additional debt. What are my options? [10:52] A2: A PMP is sufficient. Put on the application, “20 years of experience in lieu of a BA,” or BS, (whichever they specify). That gets you honestly past the applicant tracker. Do not lie. [11:51] Q3: I am not having any luck finding employment. I am qualified to be an HR manager, but I don’t want a management role. I have applied to non-managerial positions in HR and had a couple of interviews but no offers. Money is not a problem. I am willing to work for much less than I have in the past. I would like to work at an Non-Profit. [12:42] A3: There are multiple pieces to this. No one is going to believe that you are willing to work for less money. If you go back into the for-profit world in the second half of life, it’s going to come down to a relationship that you already have or can resurrect or build. To work in the nonprofit world takes completely different skills than for profit. [14:28] Marc suggests first seeking a nonprofit certificate program at a community college. Fundraising is different from sales. Volunteer management is not HR. You will have to build relationships at the nonprofit by serving on a board or volunteering. They are often dysfunctional. Figure out which one you could tolerate with its dysfunctions. [17:07] Elizabeth has worked on nonprofit boards. She recommends building your network by volunteering. There may be a lot of uncertainty and you may need flexibility. [18:01] Marc serves on the board of one nonprofit, Launchpad Job Club, and the President hates to ask for money. Money is necessary for a nonprofit. Marc notes that getting to a size where employees are paid is a big, difficult change for an NFP. [19:03] Marc invites you to record your question for the show using the microphone option at CareerPivot.com. Your voice can be on the show! Or email him your question.
