Let's talk about a mistake that I see far too many virtual assistants making. It's one that can significantly slow down your business growth and keep you stuck working with the wrong clients, or even no clients at all. That mistake is: avoiding networking. A lot of VAs underestimate the value of building relationships and connecting with others, both peers and potential clients, because they think that networking is just about sales, or that it's only necessary if they're “desperate” for clients. In this episode, we're going to talk about why avoiding networking is such a huge mistake, what happens when you rely solely on passive marketing, and how to shift your mindset around connecting with people so that networking becomes something you actually enjoy as part of your regular business routine. I'll also share some of the most common myths about networking that I see holding VAs back. And of course, I'll plant the seed for how you can work with me if this is an area you want to get better at. Ask yourself this: where do I need to show up more? Who can I reconnect with this week? What small networking habit can I build into my routine? If you need ideas or want some support making networking feel natural and easy, I'd love to help. Come find me on social at https://YourVAMentor.com/links, or better yet, jump into one of my live trainings where we can work on this together. I'm here to help. Rik, with a brain the size of a planet, challenged everything, and after a gruelling couple of pints it was decided we should see if we could do it. We brought in another brain, Max Paukovs, overseer of our crack coding team of Kristaps, Ritvars, Martins, Atis and Valdis. They worked on proof of concept code. The code worked. We moved on.  Over the next two years, we raised investment, both institutional and private, launched and tested the beta version, got things wrong, made them right, got more things wrong, heard feedback (some harsh, some amazing) and developed Kirmada to become the app small businesses need to organise their client workloads, boost productivity, and increase billable revenue. Everyone who saw the concept during development “got it” and we were able to build an impressive cap table of investors which includes an Australian investment fund and the legendary ex-CFO of Google, Patrick Pichette. Now our team has grown to include Fran, Genevieve, Tim, Callum and Mills and we're pushing ahead with an exciting development roadmap to deliver our goal of the ultimate business and personal productivity tool. What is the illusion that readiness creates? Let's get something clear right from the start: “Feeling ready” is a myth. It's not a real thing. It's a feeling. But it's not a milestone you suddenly arrive at. It's not a box you check off. It's not something you get handed after watching 10 webinars or reading a few books. It's an illusion. And the longer you wait for it, the longer you stay stuck. What you actually need is courage and a decision. That's it. It's easy to think you need more training, a better website, more confidence, or even more time before you can truly start your business or move it forward. But what you're actually doing is using “not ready” as a shield. A form of protection. If you never launch, you never fail. If you never promote yourself, no one can judge you. But the flip side? You never grow. You never help anyone. And you certainly don't build the VA business you say you want. I've seen it over and over again with the VAs I coach, and I've experienced it myself. I remember struggling to have the VA business that I wanted. I took every course I could find (free of course), and I kept adding to my arsenal of learned stuff. I didn't really set goals, because I didn't feel ready. I didn't do any networking, because I didn't feel ready. I didn't promote my business, because I wasn't quite …. ready. Well, I'm here to tell you now that the longer you stay your own little secret, the more you will struggle. Stop waiting, and start being a ridiculously good virtual assistant. Today I want to talk about what to focus on in your first 90 days as a VA - and what to ignore (for now!). And even if you are already in business, this episode will serve as a reference to you to ensure that you are focusing on the right things. When you're just starting out as a virtual assistant, everything can feel urgent. You might have a mile-long to-do list, a dozen tabs open in your browser all the time, and your mind might be spinning - trying to figure out where to begin. It's really easy to fall in the trap of doing all the things, all at once, but that's exactly what can slow you down. Let's walk through what your first 90 days should really look like. Because there are just a few things that matter in those early weeks, and a whole bunch that can absolutely wait. The biggest mistake new virtual assistants make in those first 90 days: focusing on the wrong things. In this episode we'll talk about what's important to get you started, get you moving, and what will help you start to get great clients.  I can help you set up your plan to get it done. It's the only reason I'm here at all, is to help you become a ridiculously good Virtual Assistant. Reach out to me on social media to chat. Make me one of your daily conversations this week! One of the biggest mistakes I see VAs make is trying to do everything at once. Social media posts, cold emails, joining every networking group, tweaking their website… sound familiar? You're not alone - I do the same thing! While those are all great strategies in the long term, they can dilute your energy and results when you're looking for a VA client quickly. The key is choosing one strategy and going all in. Why? Because focus brings clarity, and clarity brings results. By narrowing your efforts, you can: Give your strategy the attention it deserves. Track your results effectively. Avoid feeling overwhelmed. So, what strategy should you choose? That's up to you and your strengths, but I'll guide you through an example here to help you decide and take action.   I hope this framework gives you the focus and confidence to find your next client. Remember, it's all about taking consistent, intentional action. You've got this! You CAN get a client in a week. When it's your main focus and you do the right things, it's easier than you think. If you want to get really focused and move your VA business forward in just a week, you should join me for my 5 Day challenge From Consults to Clients that starts next week! So this isn't an episode where you will learn about mindset, or time management or marketing your VA business. Not really, anyway. In this episode I want to talk about your VA colleagues. A supportive network is vital in any industry, but I really think having a solid community around you is essential for Virtual Assistants. Over the years I have obviously connected with hundreds, maybe even thousands of VAs personally. I have met a lot of VAs - at all stages of their business. When I was a VA myself, we used to connect online in forums and attend live events that the associations ran, as often as we could. We really wanted to get to know one another. We needed to get to know one another. It's not that it has to be lonely to be a VA - but it often is. You are not meant to do everything on your own when you work for yourself - and by yourself. You still need community. And I don't mean surfing the local VA Facebook group for job opportunities. I mean really connecting with people. How many VAs do you actually know and talk with on a regular basis? That's what I'm talking about in today's episode.   You don't have to go far to find your people. We are right here! I am right here. I can help. It's time. I'm here to help. It's the only reason I'm here at all, is to help you become a ridiculously good VA. But it's you who has to take that first step. Every VA journey is unique. Yours is different than mine was, and mine was different that hers was. We try to learn everything we can, and yet still some things don't go the way we want them to, or the way we expected them to. There can be tough moments. Your job is to figure out a way to get our of them - and not repeat them again. Tough situations help us learn how to do things better. Let's talk today about a few things that might go wrong - and how to fix them and move forward. Failure will happen, things will go wrong, and it's how you bounce back from those failures that will help you grow in your VA business. Obviously we hope nothing ever goes wrong - but sometimes it does and we need to handle it. Learning to deal with things in a professional manner, without letting one walk all over you, is resilient. It's the much better way to be! What have you experienced that has made you feel like throwing in the towel, or running away to hide, or dumping a client, or even is just giving you stress of any kind? Fix it. And move on. That's the advice. Jane says you can do it, and I agree with her. You deserve everything you dream of. Let's circle back to today's quote by Sheryl Sandberg: Resilience is not about overcoming, but becoming. It is about finding yourself in the process. Staying in business long term means building that resilience. And it's not about overcoming things, really, it's about you finding yourself as a business person. Not just a VA, someone's helper. But a bona fide expert in helping others. That's you! Seek out support if you can't do it on your own. It will be money well spent. You can do this. I know you can. I can help. It's time. A lot of the marketing for your business will occur when you aren't even talking directly to someone - on social media or in other conversations. But you still can control what is said, when you leverage social proof. Social proof leverages the opinions and feedback of other people to talk about how great your product or service is. For your Virtual Assistant business, being able to share social proof can really help build the know, like and trust with those people that haven't worked with you before. What do I mean by social proof? Wikipedia: Social proof (or informational social influence) is a psychological and social phenomenon wherein people copy the actions of others in choosing how to behave in a given situation. The term was coined by Robert Cialdini in his 1984 book Influence: Science and Practice. Social proof comes in many forms. Some you might have thought of before, and some you may not have. But all of them are effective ways to get the word out about your services. We'll talk about how to collect, create and use social proof in your VA business so that clients will feel more comfortable making the decision to work with you!   I'd love to help you get there. Networking is always going to be the solution that I mention when it comes to finding clients. But networking is also how you grow your business. Your contacts. Your audience. Connecting with the right people can lead to the best clients. Collaborations. Awesome learning opportunities. When it comes to your VA business, the people you know can help you grow in every area. I used to travel to events to network with my clients and their colleagues. And yes it cost me money, but I made much more money from the clients that I picked up there than I ever spent. Luckily we have much more opportunity locally and online now to network but it's all networking. How do you feel about networking? Today I want to talk about how to start networking with new people. If you're like a lot of the artist-clients that I work with at Art Biz Success, you would love someone to help you with social media. Or your website. Or maybe anything else to help lighten the load. Having any kind of help sounds like a dream. It may seem like an impossible dream. You might be looking for someone like my guest for this episode of The Art Biz: Hallie Edlund, a virtual assistant for artists. We discuss how she started doing this work and how she helps artists with social media and their websites. We touch upon how she uses A.I. and her advice for using it in your art business. And you know I couldn't resist asking how she stays organized. Her system of keeping everything for her clients in Gmail folders left me with my mouth hanging open, which luckily you can't witness on a podcast. Hallie has a new Instagram course for artists and generously shares two tips for that platform near the end of our conversation. If you're looking to hire someone to help with your art business, I suggest checking out the related episodes and articles posted below as well.
