In this episode Marty talks about Dan Wheldon, Chris recommends some Drive to Survive episodes, and there are flying dildos. But first, Dan Wheldon's life and legacy is coming to the documentary Lionheart. Chris has watched Drive to Survive, and Marty hasn't. Is it worth a watch, and which episodes are worth your time? But both have watched Grand Tour presents Sand Job. In 'What has Henry Catchpole been upto this week?' it's the F.A.T Ice Race in Aspen - or Goodwood on Ice - with some bizarrely rare and special cars raised up and given studded tyres. For some reason, we're been drenched in interviews this month, with Ben Collins chatting with Top Gear mastermind Andy Wilman, while Dan and Andrew of The Intercooler talking really inside baseball with James May. However, we couldn't avoid talking about Red Bull's challenge to build a drone that can keep up with an F1 car, which may change the way we see Formula cars on the limit. It's deeply impressive and looks like a flying dildo. They also talk about Colin Braun and the possibility of him competing at IMS. They also talk about Callum Illot filling in for David Malukas at McLaren, and the reason Kevin thinks Illot will be the one in the seat come time for St. Pete.  Later in the first hour of the show, Kevin and Curt talk about where some engineers will go next season. They talk about how teams must keep up with Arrow McLaren in engineering. Kevin also talks about the Indy 500's motto being stolen by F1, using a similar phrase: “the greatest spectacle in motorsports.” Kevin talks about how he thinks the errors in using IMS's motto were probably caused by someone in an entry level social media position may have done without thinking.  Kevin rounds out the first hour previewing the second hour of the show.  In the second hour of the show, Curt and Kevin talk about the new Josef Newgarden commercial, and the banning of the snaking maneuver that Newgarden used to win the Indy 500 last year. They talk about the nuance of the new rule, and how severe the punishment could be for the driver who goes below the line. They also talk about new video boards and other improvements coming to the track.  During the second hour, Kevin talks about the Dan Wheldon documentary, and how Wheldon's sons are doing in racing. They also talk about a platform to sell tickets for IMS at face value without losing seniority.  Kevin ends the show talking about an announcement Jackson Lee made today. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dan Wheldon, Kyle Kirkwood, J.R. Hildebrand, Jay Howard, Sage Karam, Oliver Askew, Spencer Pigot, and Rinus VeeKay. Beyond the fact that all of these drivers are either past or current competitors in the Indy 500, what do they have in common? They all competed in the USF2000 series, which is one of the feeder series to IndyCar. Al Morey IV is 17 years old and a rookie in the USF 2000 series, competing for Indianapolis-based team Jay Howard Driver Development. He lives in Fishers, and ever since he started racing karts at the age of 9, he has had his sights on the upper rungs of professional racing. But the road to IndyCar is never easy, in part because it is so expensive. Running an open-wheel car for a full season in USF2000 can easily run several hundred thousand dollars for the driver. That includes tires, engineering and mechanical services, parts and labor, track testing and travel, food, and lodging. Drivers can defray some of those costs with sponsor dollars, but they typically must arrange those relationships themselves. Al Morey's father, also named Al Morey, says the cost of this season could be anywhere between $400,000 to $700,000, depending, for example, on how often the car is damaged. In the latest edition of the IBJ Podcast, the father and son team talk about what it's like in the trenches of professional racing, the costs involved, and how they work together to secure sponsors. Moyer is a 30-year veteran of IndyCar racing, beginning in the 1980s when he swept the floors at Gary Bettenhausen's race shop in Monrovia, Indiana. Moyer was with Galles-Kraco Racing from 1989-92, working with the great Al Unser, Jr. when that driver won the Indianapolis 500 in 1992. Moyer had an extremely successful tenure at Team Kool Green, which ultimately became Andretti Autosport. Moyer played a key role in the team that include Indianapolis 500 victories by Jacques Villeneuve in 1995, Dan Wheldon in 2005, Dario Franchitti in 2007 and Ryan Hunter-Reay in 2014. The team also won IndyCar Series championships with Villeneuve in 1995, Tony Kanaan in 2004, Wheldon in 2005 and Hunter-Reay in 2012. For most racing drivers, the chance to step up to Formula 1 is the opportunity of their careers, but Anthony Davidson says that his first grand prix start is something he still regrets to this day.Speaking to Chris Medland in the final episode from the current My big break series, WEC champion Davidson talks about the turning points in his career, which included more than a decade in top-level racing.Along the way, he brings his thoughtful views on why F1's points system should be revamped, the challenges facing female racing drivers, and his current commentary role.He reveals how an impromptu visit to Brands Hatch was the key to moving out of karting — where he raced alongside the likes of Dan Wheldon and Jenson Button — and into Formula Ford. Within two years, Davidson was a Formula 1 test driver and he eventually got his chance to race with Minardi, driving what he calls a "beast" of a car that he wasn't physically prepared for — and paying £250,000 for the privilege. But Davidson bided his time and was rewarded with a drive for Super Aguri, where he came agonisingly close to scoring world championship points. With the withdrawal of the team, he turned to sports cars, racing for Aston Martin before joining Peugeot's effort and then moving to Toyota, where he admits he's still "grieving" the 2016 Le Mans win that never was, when his car broke down with a lap remaining.Frank, funny, and insightful, Davidson takes you through the highs and lows of his eventful career. Team Penske driver Will Power is a two-time winner on the streets of St. Petersburg with victories in 2010 and 2014. He is also an eight-time pole winner at St. Pete, most recently in 2020. The most revealing aspect of Pit Pass Indy host Bruce Martin's interview with Power is the driver's description of the horrific crash at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on October 16, 2011. The 15-car pile-up sent Power's car airborne 25 feet into the air and into the fence. Power suffered a broken back in the crash, but when his car came to a stop, it was facing the damaged car containing Dan Wheldon, who was killed when his head hit one of the fenceposts supporting the wheel-fence after his car had also launched into the fence. Power admits how that sight continues to haunt him to this day and still causes panic attacks. As for the 2022 season, Power believes he can return to championship form and also looks to the future, after his racing career is over. With 40 career wins and 62 career poles, the series championship in 2014 and an Indianapolis 500 victory in 2018, Power has firmly established himself as one of the great drivers in INDYCAR racing. Pit Pass Indy host Bruce Martin conducted an in-depth and revealing interview with Power from his home on Lake Norman, North Carolina as the Team Penske driver prepares for this weekend's Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg the latest episode of the Pit Pass Indy. The 2021 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season is underway after a spectacular debut weekend for a new driver at Chip Ganassi Racing.  Alex Palou of Spain became just the third driver to score an IndyCar win in his Chip Ganassi Racing debut when the 24-year-old from Sant Antoni de Vilamajor, Spain led 56 of the 90 laps in the race to win Sunday's Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park. The other two drivers to win in their CGR IndyCar debut were Michael Andretti in 1994 and Dan Wheldon in 2006. Last year, America got to know Alex Palou when the then-rookie driver from Spain had an impressive season with Dale Coyne Racing with Team Goh. It certainly impressed team owner Chip Ganassi, who hired Palou to replace Felix Rosenqvist in the No. 10 NTT DATA Honda. In the first race of the 2021 NTT IndyCar Series season, Palou got to know Victory Lane. This was a race where so much attention was placed on a first-time driver for Chip Ganassi Racing. But instead of seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson in the No. 48, it was Palou in the No. 10. He defeated a charging Will Power by 0.4016 seconds. Palou was able to use a consistent driving style to keep Power at bay, as the Team Penske driver had nearly half of his 200 seconds of push-to-pass to use in the final 10 laps. Because Power was able to hit the push to pass button, he tightened the gap to just 1.2300 seconds to the leader as they raced around the picturesque road course outside of Birmingham, Alabama. Palou was able to fend off the pressure and stay 1.8311 seconds ahead of Power's Chevrolet beginning the final lap. He drove to the first checkered flag of his career as he scored his first NTT INDYCAR SERIES victory. Palou was one of three Chip Ganassi Racing drivers in the top eight. Six-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Scott Dixon was third and Sweden's Marcus Ericsson was eighth. Pit Pass Indy caught up with Palou Friday at Barber Motorsports Park to talk to the popular Spaniard about joining one of the elite teams in INDYCAR. The featured interview for this week's episode, however, is Jimmie Johnson. The seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion is the first to admit he has a lot to learn and a long time to get there as he switches gears from a legendary career in NASCAR to an IndyCar rookie.  Although he struggled with the results over the weekend, he kept the expectations low. He qualified 21st in the 24-car field, avoided a first-lap crash that was triggered when Team Penske driver Josef Newgarden spun, and was able to finish the race 19th, three laps down. Pit Pass Indy had a lengthy interview with Johnson a few weeks ago and he talks about the reason he parked his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet in NASCAR to begin a new career in the No. 48 Carvana Chip Ganassi Racing Honda in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. Finally, Pit Pass Indy caught up with McLaren CEO Zak Brown, who skipped this past weekend's Formula One race in Imola, Italy to support his IndyCar effort at Arrow McLaren SP, that includes Pato O'Ward of Mexico and Felix Rosenqvist of Sweden. O'Ward won the pole and was one of the leading contenders in the race. All of that, and more, on this week's edition of Pit Pass Indy. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
