We have a new podcast! It's called Universe Of Art, and it's all about artists who use science to bring their creations to the next level. Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.   Where's The Beef? Lab-Grown Meat Gets U.S. Approval People have been looking for meat-alternatives for decades. Vegetarians avoid animal products for many reasons, from concerns over animal treatment and slaughtering practices to the meat industry's climate impacts. Methane from cows and other livestock contribute about 15% of all greenhouse gas emissions. There have been plant-based alternatives on the market for awhile now, but another method has quietly gained steam over the past decade: meat grown in a lab, using cultured cells. This past June, the U.S. Department of Agriculture approved two companies—Eat Just and Upside—to grow and sell cultivated chicken products in the U.S. Lab-developed beef will likely be next, while some companies are even working on cultivated pet food meat. (Lab-grown mouse meat kibble, anyone?) But will growing tissue in a lab actually reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and … will people even want to eat it? Joining Ira to discuss this beefy topic is Casey Crownhart, climate reporter at the MIT Technology Review, who talks about how this kind of meat is made in a lab, the challenges the industry faces, and what lab-grown beef patty tastes like.   How Rising Temperatures Are Shifting The Ground Beneath Chicago As global temperatures rise, cities are typically hotter than rural areas. Tall buildings trap heat and temperatures don't drop nearly as low at night. Out of sight, just below the surface, it's also getting hotter. Scientists are beginning to document the unexpected consequences of underground climate change. A new study measuring the phenomenon used sensors to track increasing temperatures underground in Chicago and map how the earth has shifted beneath the city as a result. Ira talks with the lead researcher of the study, Dr. Alessandro Rotta Loria, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at Northwestern University, based in Chicago, Illinois.   A Fish By Any Other Name: Inside The Effort To Bring ‘Copi' To Dinner People who live near freshwater rivers or lakes are likely familiar with Asian Carp. The fish are not native to the U.S., but over the last few decades their populations have exploded in waterways like the Mississippi River Basin and the Illinois River. Over the last few years, there's been a major PR campaign to move away from the name Asian Carp, in favor of a new name: “Copi.” The reason is two-fold: First, it joins a general trend of moving species' names away from nationalistic associations, considering anti-Asian hate crimes during the COVID-19 pandemic. The other goal is to make the fish sound more delicious—creating a market that would incentivize fishing the Copi, hopefully reducing their populations. Joining Ira to talk about this is Jim Garvey, director of fisheries, aquaculture and aquatic sciences at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois.   Thanks To A Mesozoic Hot Spot, We Finally Know How Old The Utahraptor Is Sometimes Jim Kirkland wishes he had been alive 150 years ago. That's when the golden age of North American dinosaur discovery began, and early titans of paleontology crisscrossed the Rocky Mountains unearthing dozens of new species that became household names, from the Stegosaurus to the Brontosaurus to the Triceratops. But a close second to that era is what Kirkland gets to see these days in Utah. “I am doing that kind of discovery right now,” Kirkland said. “I'm just lucky to be alive.” Kirkland, Utah's state paleontologist, uncovered and named the Utahraptor in 1993. The deadly predator became the official state dinosaur in 2018. To read the rest, visit sciencefriday.com.   To stay updated on all-things-science, sign up for Science Friday's newsletters. Welcome to the Juras-Sick Park-Cast podcast, the Jurassic Park podcast about Michael Crichton's 1990 novel Jurassic Park, and also not about that, too.  Find the episode webpage at: Episode 50 - Tyrannosaur. In this episode, my terrific guest Dr. Jim Kirkland joins the show to chat with me about: Excavating dinosaurs, traversing the badlands, volunteers on the site, extracting soft tissues (but not DNA) from fossils, ankylosaurs, studying fossils, Utahraptor Megablock, 3D printing fossils,  naming dinosaurs after people, like: Nedcolbertia justinhoffmani, Martharaptor, Gastonia; dromaeosaurs, velociraptor, utahraptor, not naming a dinosaur after Steven Spielberg, Super Slasher, the future of paleontology, The Dinosaurs A - Z song from Dinosaur Train, tail-standing protoceratops, living and dying in dunes, and burrowing dinosaurs, and much more! And The Mesozoic Terrestrial Ecosystems Conference is going to Utah in June. One of Dr. Kirkland's talks on dromaeosaurs: Utahraptor and Dromaeosaurs. Plus dinosaur news about: Ornithischian dinosaurs in Southeast Asia: a review with palaeobiogeographic implications Ontogeny and variation of the pachycephalosaurine dinosaur Sphaerotholus buchholtzae, and its systematics within the genus (Sphaerotholus buchholtzae) Featuring the music of Snale https://snalerock.bandcamp.com/ Intro: Toucans.  Outro: Shelter Dog. The Text: This week's text is Tyrannosaur, spanning from pages 288 – 298. Synopsis: Muldoon and Gennaro locate the Big Rex and head out to tranquilizer her. Meanwhile, Lex, Tim and Grant plummet over the waterfall where the Big Rex has been waiting to eat them. The tyrannosaur loses them in the water, but finds the life vest. Meanwhile, Grant snags the kids, resuscitates Lex from drowning and leads them up a path behind the waterfalls to hide from the Tyrannosaur. Behind the falls, Grant finds a secured maintenance facility, golf cart, and juvenile velociraptor, but unfortunately, he gets separated from the kids by a locked door. He tranquilizes the raptor, discovering that it's a male that was bred in the wild. The kids, on the other hand, are locked out and the tyrannosaur bursts through the waterfalls, uses its tongue like an elephant trunk to catch Tim, and is about to eat him, when it falls asleep.  Discussions surround: The Dinosaurs, Timeline, Believe Me! I know!, Crichton Tropes, Contrivances in Plot, Park Management and Movie Adaptations.  Corrections: Side effects:  May cause you to threaten lawsuits to any and all people who use the word "Jurassic," and cost you having Utahraptor named after you.  Find it on iTunes, on Spotify (click here!) or on Podbean (click here). This week we meet the executive producer of a Discovery Channel show about the RV Life… who tells us how RVing has changed his life in the most unexpected way… Our guest is Anthony Nalli, who shares a behind the scenes look at the popular RVers TV series, as seen on the Discovery Channel and the PBS network…. Plus we have RV news, tips, your questions and a very interesting off the beaten path report from our friends, the Burketts. Show Notes for Episode #282 Feb. 19, 2020 of The RV Podcast: WHAT MIKE AND JENNIFER ARE UP TO THIS WEEK We’ll…here we go again. We’re off, this time on a trip that will probably last about three months. This is a crazy busy week for us, getting the RV serviced, topping off the propane, packing it and then taking off across the south and southwest U.S. We hit the road right after this episode is released. We've got lots of great adventures planned, starting with a big circle tour of Florida. Speaking of Florida, we'll be doing a meetup at the Ocala RV Show in Ocala, FL Saturday Feb. 29 from 11AM to 1PM at the Sunshine State RVs display. We look forward to meeting our Florida followers and snowbird friends wintering down there. We plan to also visit the Space Coast, Key West, the Everglades and Naples. We also will be checking out a brand new RV resort that just opened for the over 55 crowd in Summerfield, FL (Sunkissed Village RV Resort). And then on up and along the Gulf Coast, first to Texas and then heading all the way to New Mexico. We'll have videos, blog posts and lots of social media updates on our travels, meetups, adventures, and plans by sharing regular updates on our travels, especially on Instagragram. You can follow us on Instagram by clicking https://www.instagram.com/rvlifestylemike    If you have some suggestions of things we should see and do and report about. Just send them to us via email. You can email us anytime at mikeandjen@rvlifestyle.com.... This part of the podcast is brought to you by Dish Outdoors, which lets RVers pay as they go and watch HD satellite television from wherever they are camped with easy to set up gear made with the RVer in mind. RV LIFESTYLE NEWS OF THE WEEK California state parks building new campground with stunning, ocean side views California state parks are in the process of building a new, 110 site ocean-side campground at Fort Ord Dunes State Park. The state park opened about a decade ago off Highway 1, near Seaside. It is a former army base with four miles of breathtaking coastline on the Pacific Ocean. Currently the land is a favorite of surfers and beach walkers. The state plans to start construction on the campground this fall, and open it in 2022. Utah officials want to create new state park near Arches National Park Speaking of new state parks, Utah state legislators want to create a "Utahraptor" state park that will recognize Utah's dinosaur discoveries and provide a second entrance to Arches National Park. The Mayor of Moab spoke in favor of this, saying the community has had problems with people boondocking in areas where it is not allowed, causing community problems. The spot of the proposed park is 15 miles north of Moab where the Utahraptor was discovered. The site was also an internment camp in WWII. Some large RV parks hiring RV service technicians to help customers, provide new revenue source Long time readers know we have reported at length over the years about the shortage of RV service technicians. (click here or here). So it was with interest we read a story in RVBusiness about RV parks hiring their own RV technicians as a side revenue source- and a way to help campers. Hiring RV technicians and employing them at a large campground makes sense to us. To read the story click here. Owner of Newmar RV successfully sues under lemon law
