Die Historikerin, Pfarrfrau und Mutter Christine Christ trifft bei Michèle Schönbächler auf den Musiker Balthasar Streiff Christine Christ, Historikerin, Pfarrfrau, Mutter Christine Christ von Wedel wuchs in Reinbek bei Hamburg auf – in der Atmosphäre der deutschen Nachkriegszeit und geprägt von den Werten einer preussischen Adelsfamilie. Gemeinsam mit ihrer Zwillingsschwester und zwei älteren Brüdern erlebte sie eine behütete Kindheit. Früh zog es sie in die Welt des Wissens und der Musik: Als junge Frau ging sie nach Basel, studierte Geschichte, Philosophie und Kirchengeschichte und bildete gleichzeitig ihre Stimme zur Sopranistin aus. Mit dem reformierten Pfarrer Hieronymus Christ ist sie seit vielen Jahren verheiratet, gemeinsam haben sie vier Söhne. Jahrzehntelang prägte sie das Leben im Kanton Thurgau – als Pfarrfrau, in Konzerten, in kirchlichen Institutionen und als engagierte Stimme für historische und theologische Themen. Wissenschaftlich folgt sie ihrer Leidenschaft für „historische Rätsel“, wie sie es selbst nennt. Besonders intensiv hat sie sich mit dem Humanisten Erasmus von Rotterdam auseinandergesetzt und mehrere Publikationen über ihn veröffentlicht. Aktuell arbeitet sie an einem Buch über Sebastian Castellio, einen frühen Verfechter religiöser Toleranz – ein Thema, das eng mit ihren Forschungsschwerpunkten verbunden ist. Für ihre Arbeit in der Reformations- und Humanismusforschung erhielt sie 2015 den Wissenschaftspreis der Stadt Basel. Und bis heute verbringt Christine Christ von Wedel fast täglich mehrere Stunden in der Bibliothek – besonders in der Handschriftenabteilung. Dort liest und übersetzt sie lateinische Texte, getrieben von einem Wissensdurst, der bis heute ungebrochen ist. _________________________ Balthasar Streiff, Musiker «Marta», «Charlie», «Adonis», «Shen». Seine Instrumente tragen Namen und haben alle eine eigene Geschichte. Schwungvoll gebogen sind sie, die Kuh-, Schaf-, Geissenhörner, die Balthasar Streiff zum Klingen bringt. Der gebürtige Zürcher hat sich auf das Spielen von Hörnern und Zinken spezialisiert. Neben den tierischen Hörnern beschäftigt er sich auch mit dem traditionellen Schweizer Alphorn. Er gilt dabei heute als einer der wichtigsten Erneuerer des Alphorns. Mit seinem künstlerischen Forschergeist verbindet er Tradition und Avantgarde und erschafft einen unverwechselbaren, zeitgenössischen Klangkosmos. Der ausgebildete Lehrer studierte nach seiner Erstausbildung an der Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel und besuchte dabei die Bildhauerfachklasse, gleichzeitig besuchte er Kurse an der Jazzhochschule in Luzern. Selbst beschreibt er sich als «professioneller Dilettant», der auch mal etwas liegenlässt, weil daraus – wie bei einem Kompost – Neues entstehen könne. Gleichzeitig tüftelt er in seiner Werkstatt in einem Wohnhaus in Basel an neuen Klängen, aus Hörnern, Muscheln und Algenblättern. The cross proves that this shepherd is willing to sacrifice everything, and the resurrection confirms that God's 'yes' is complete in Christ. As we enter this Christmas season, we're reminded that the same faithful shepherd who fulfilled ancient prophecies is still seeking us, still healing us, and still keeping his promises today.

We're reminded of our calling to be 'salt and light' in the world. Drawing from Matthew 5:13-16, we explore how Christians are meant to preserve goodness and illuminate truth in our communities. Just as salt preserves and enhances, we're called to fight moral corruption and share the wisdom of Christ. As light, we're meant to reveal what is good and point others to Jesus. This isn't about shining for our own glory, but about serving for souls, not for show. We're challenged to examine our motives - are we living to be seen by others, or to glorify God? The message encourages us to share our faith journey through both action and words, reminding us that even small acts of integrity can open doors to share the gospel. As we go forth, let's consider: How can we be salt and light in our daily lives, preserving what is good and illuminating the path to Christ for others?

Zu den Dienstleistungen der Tageszeitungen vor 100 Jahren gehörte es, der Bevölkerung in der Stadt oder Region, in der sie erschienen, Ausflugstipps und insbesondere Wanderrouten zu empfehlen. Diese wurden oft mit Kilometer- und Zeitangaben und genauen Wegbeschreibungen präsentiert. Am 3. April 1925 schickte der Hamburger Anzeiger seiner Leser*innen auf die Wanderroute von Blankenese über Schulau und Wedel nach Rissen. Blankenese war damals schon lange nicht mehr das Hangdorf, in dem Lotsen und Kapitäne ihren Ruhestand verlebten, aber sicherlich noch nicht so sehr bürgerliches Villenviertel. Wie viele dicht befahrene Straßen man heute auf dem beschriebenen Spaziergang überqueren muss und wie malerisch die Naturlandschaft ist, können wir nicht beurteilen, empfehlen aber unseren Hörer*innen aus der Gegend dies zu überprüfen. Als letzte Äbtissin des Fraumünsters fällt Katharina von Zimmern vor 500 Jahren einen mutigen und weitsichtigen Entscheid. Sie übergibt ihre Abtei dem Bürgermeister und dem Rat von Zürich. Und ermöglicht so eine Reformation ohne Bürgerkrieg. Der 8. Dezember 1524 ist ein Wendepunkt in der spätmittelalterlichen Geschichte Zürichs. Katharina von Zimmern besiegelt die Übergabe der Fraumünsterabtei. Um die Stadt vor «gross unruoh und ungemach» zu bewahren. Das Fraumünster geht von kirchlichem in weltlichen Besitz. Mit dem Kloster gibt die Äbtissin auch das ganze Vermögen und alle Ländereien ab. Sie verzichtet auf ihre Position mit allen Privilegien und Rechten. Erweist sich aber auch als geschickte Verhandlerin. Der Rat sichert ihr gute Bedingungen zu für ihr Leben als «normale» Bürgerin. Katharina von Zimmern ist eine bemerkenswerte Frau in einer bewegten Zeit. Als adliges Flüchtlingskind in die Schweiz gekommen, wird sie schon mit 18 zur Vorsteherin des Klosters gewählt – und wird dort zur grossen Gestalterin. Dass sie mit grosser Wahrscheinlichkeit als Äbtissin eine Tochter geboren hat, kann sie geheim halten. This is Part Two of Greg and Ed's interview with Paul and Yuangrat Wedel, returning guests to the show who previously talked about their book “Radical Thought, Thai Mind.” This time around the fascinating couple discuss their two novels, “Beads On A String” and “Dark Karma,” each historical fiction based in Southern Thailand. In this part of the interview, the couple focus on the historical characters and events that are interwoven into the fictional narrative. Greg asks about the sensitivity of dealing with certain high status characters, but Paul and Yuangrat make clear that they very closely followed historical records about public statements and acts.  The interview continues to address such matters as the technology changes that swamped Siam at the turn of the century, the delicate political relationship between Bangkok and the southern sultanates/provinces, and plans for the next episode in the narrative which will encompass the 1932 coup that ended absolute monarchy in Thailand. The two begin with a discussion of the origin of the novels. In short, Yuangrat grew up in the deep South of Thailand with a family of mixed ethnicity, including Thai, Malay, Mon, and Chinese ancestry. This rich family tree provided the raw material for the characters who populate the story. Then the couple did serious historical research on the epic changes that the South of Thailand went through in the late 1800s and early 1900s. With the character and the historical framework, they then wove a fictional story that intersects with actual historical events.  Greg, having dug into the first novel, attests to the pull of the story, which is a fascinating (and surprisingly horny!) look into a part of Thailand that was caught in the middle of a whirlwind of change, and the people that played a role in how it evolved. The discussion looks at topics that still play a big role in Thailand today - royalty, religion, money, corruption, gambling, and complex family dynamics. Against the backdrop of southern Thailand at the turn of the 20th, it's a fascinating look back into the past and the creation of a story that's as layered and nuanced as the real-life details the novels portray.
