Networks of Power: Building Resilient Communities in an Era of PushbackIn this episode of the Elevate Women in Tech podcast, host Kellie Kwarteng sits down with Dr. Vanessa Vallely, OBE - pioneering founder of We Are the City and We Are Tech Women - to explore how resilient networks are empowering women and underrepresented groups in tech during a time of significant social and corporate pushback.Key Topics Covered:Shifting DEI Landscape: Vanessa discusses the rebranding of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives as organizations face cultural and political resistance. Despite changing terminology, the need for support and safe spaces for underrepresented groups remains critical. The Importance of Networks: The conversation highlights why women's and gender networks are more vital than ever, providing safe spaces, mentorship, and opportunities for connection beyond the workplace. Vanessa emphasizes the power of mixed-gender events and the crucial role of male allyship in driving progress.Challenges in Tech and STEM: The episode addresses concerning trends, such as declining numbers of girls in STEM subjects and the underrepresentation of women in AI and cybersecurity. Vanessa and Kellie underscore the importance of early inspiration, diverse role models, and accessible pathways into tech careers. Mentorship vs. Sponsorship: Vanessa argues that while mentorship is valuable, sponsorship - where leaders actively advocate for and open doors for women- is essential for real advancement. She shares practical examples of how sponsorship accelerates careers and builds future leaders.Building Resilient Communities: The discussion covers strategies for sustaining momentum in gender equality work, even as organizations face economic and political pressures. The role of Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), in-person events, and cross-industry collaboration is explored as key to collective resilience.Actionable Advice: Listeners receive concrete tips for building career strategies, expanding networks, and leveraging both mentorship and sponsorship. Vanessa encourages continuous learning, amplifying quieter voices, and fostering a culture of allyship across all levels of tech organizations.Featured Initiatives:We Are Tech Women's global events, including One Tech World, Tech Women 100 Awards, and Women in Tech Week, are spotlighted as platforms for connection, learning, and recognition.Ongoing research and advocacy to address barriers to women's progression into senior tech roles, with a focus on the economic benefits of gender diversity. Why Listen:This episode is essential for tech professionals, DEI advocates, and organizational leaders seeking to understand the evolving challenges in gender equality and how resilient networks can drive sustainable change. We need to talk about diversity and equality! This is a worldwide issue right now, as we're all very aware. Specifically, we are talking about inclusion in technology, which we at TechPixies are passionate about. It's clear from this livecast that Vanessa Vallely is not a 'sit back and take it' kind of gal! In the early days, whilst working at the same company as her husband, she noticed that his career "massively accelerated" and hers didn't. She doesn't believe this was down to their gender differences."-it has nothing to do with that. It has to do with the fact of the way that we operated at work... I was creating this busy brand that was doing me no favors, whereas he was getting out he was networking he was telling his story. He was gaining sponsorship, people would open doors for him... so all of that exposure worked for him....and you think I'd watch that and go Okay, what's he got that I haven't? That network, that sponsorship, that confidence to go and say what he wants to do -and I still didn't pick it up!"So go get it! Vanessa Vallely is considered by the Financial News as one of the most 100 Influential Women in Finance, by Brummels as one of the 30 Top Women in The City and was crowned as the Champion for Women at the 2011 Banking and Finance Awards. In addition to her flourishing corporate career, Vanessa is an entrepreneur, mentor and charity champion. Vanessa is known to some as the Queen of the City and to others as The City's most connected Womanâ yet to everyone she is known as someone with energy, flair and above all passion. Key messages from Vanessa: Personally, this is one interview that I've gone back to listened to about three times to give me the opportunity to absorb the volume of information that Vanessa shares with us. One of my favourite parts is right at the start when Vanessa says how she could see the Tallest City Buildings from her bedroom window and that one day she was going to work there. That is clearly a very powerful memory for her, even now all these years later. From a personality perspective Vanessa is another person who refers to the importance of passion, enthusiasm and determination - coupling this with the importance of keeping a mind that is constantly open and seeking out new ideas. Planning, asking questions, investing in yourself - the advice just kept coming and coming. Here are a few highlights: Just give me a chance - just give me an opportunity Impossible is nothing You can achieve anything you want if you truly put your mind to it Don't conform and don't be scared to be different Being innovative and creative around what you can and can't do A life without passion is a dull one indeed Hard work and determination - I definitely think that's the key Listen to the interview: Click on the following link: http://www.maximisepotential.co.uk/vanessa-vallely/ Connect with Vanessa plus other relevant links: WEBSITE: We Are The City.com WEBSITE: Careers in the City WEBSITE: Learn about the Pearly Kings and Queens of London LIVE EVENT - see Vanessa speak in person: WOMEN IN BUSINESS - Step Up & Be Heard Rate the Maximise Potential Podcast on iTunes: http://bit.ly/itunes-maxpotential Interview Transcription: Transcript: Vanessa Vallely - The Queen of The City (Max#47) Sponsors: Jenrick Recruitment - specialists in Engineering, IT and Commercial recruitment services Xerxes Music
