EP 145: Will The Real Slim Lady Please Stand Up? In this episode, I sit down with Kate, a weight loss warrior who has been navigating her journey for years, learning from every experience along the way. Kate shares her evolution from dieting as a teenager to losing four stone with Slimming World—only to regain it—and then finding a sustainable approach with calorie counting. We discuss the emotional side of weight loss, the food noise that many struggle with, and the importance of changing your mindset rather than just focusing on the number on the scale. Kate's story is incredibly relatable for anyone who has ever felt stuck in the cycle of losing and regaining weight, dealing with the all-or-nothing mindset, or struggling with self-worth on their journey. She also shares how she's made weight loss easier, why she loves using Gousto for meal planning, and how she now enjoys food without guilt. Key Highlights: From Slimming World to calorie counting – The lessons Kate learned from both approaches. Food noise & restriction – Why labelling food as “good” or “bad” can lead to an unhealthy mindset. How calorie counting gave Kate food freedom – Allowing flexibility while staying in control. Mindset shifts for lasting change – Why perfectionism is the real enemy of progress. Enjoying the journey – How to lose weight without feeling miserable or restricted. It takes effort, discipline, and dedication. For many, staying motivated and making running a consistent habit can feel like an uphill battle. So, how do you turn running into something positive that sticks? Pete Cooper believes he's cracked the code. As the co-founder of Coopah, a personalised run coaching platform, Pete has made it his mission to make running more accessible, enjoyable, and sustainable for all. Pete's journey to launching this app is deeply personal—rooted in grief, mental health struggles, and profound loss. At 23, Pete faced the unexpected loss of his mother and best friend. Two tragedies compounded by his struggles with OCD which caused him to suffer grief and depression. His battles were so intense that he came close to taking his own life. But Pete's story is also one of transformation, where he turned his own pain into a source of inspiration for others facing their own battles. In this episode Pete opens up about living with suicidal thoughts, managing his OCD, and navigating life with a heart condition, all while finding solace in running and community. Pete shares his recent experiences running with communities in Pakistan where running is an expensive sport, and he reminisces of the profound joy he had when he was younger, watching his mum blossom into a great runner. Beyond his personal story, Pete discusses how he was able to build the Coopah running app with no prior tech experience, his mission to encourage more people to take up running, and his role in establishing a refugee run club - a testament to his belief in running as a force for connection and healing. In loving memory of Dean Jones, a much beloved member of the Midnight Runners Community who sadly passed a few days after this recording. Ben Palmer joins the podcast in the first of a new regular series of check-ins where we dive into his and Tom's latest adventures—and misadventures. As a highly skilled runner and founder of Trailside Coffee, Ben brings the perfect blend of insight and humour to which I know will be a great addition to the podcast. Together, we'll take a lighter view on life, while also digging into topics that matter to us deeply. In this inaugural episode of the series, Ben shares his secrets to breaking the 2:40 marathon barrier and reveals what makes a truly great coffee. We also discuss Tom's recent cycling tour across Europe, where he passed through 9 countries across 29 days. But while his photos and videos may have looked great, did he really enjoy it? Pelumi Nubi might just be the inspiration you need to go on your next adventure alone. She is proof that you don't need much to go far, and doing it solo can build strength and resilience. Recently, Pelumi drove from London to Lagos, connecting the two places she calls home. She undertook this 6,200 mile journey in her tiny, 12 year old, Peugeot 107, passing through 17 countries, taking on some difficult border crossings and regularly sleeping in her car. It's time Brand Builders stop buying into the hype cycle of personalization, and get back down to branding basics. Personalizing for your community is one thing, but a personification of their individualization is now key. Join us in welcoming David Mannheim, the guru of personalization and Founder of Made With Intent, to this episode of Building Brand Advocacy. In a far-reaching conversation, Paul and David discuss why retention doesn't equate to loyalty, how brands can prioritize care over competency (for the sake of their community), and the art of building for long-term goals at the expense of short-term gains. From breakdowns of marketing initiatives at Amazon, Disney, Netflix, Gousto, and Bloom & Wild, you'll learn what to do (and what not to do) to win in today's brand landscape. On a technical level, personalization comes down to two things; segmentation and recommendations. David knows it's much more than that, though. From his Six Pillars of Personalization – acknowledgement, familiarity, intimacy, authenticity, care & listening – there's plenty to be learnt.Master these, and you'll be on your way to Building Brand Advocacy. And connect with David here:David's LinkedInThe Person In PersonalizationMade With Intent Hosted on Acast. This podcast conversation featured Laura Bull, Digital Marketing Manager at Gusto. She discussed the messaging used to drive sales for Gusto, a recipe box delivery service. It was noted that the messaging used to get people interested in the product is different from what drives them to purchase it. Usability, anxiety and motivation all play a role in getting people excited about recipe boxes and then converting them into customers. Three main sources of ideas are used for CRO: customer interviews and surveys, moderated user testing, and behavioral data. The conversation also discussed the importance of balancing quick wins with bigger optimization tasks when it comes to marketing. Finally, it was noted that copywriting can have a dramatic positive impact on conversion rate if it makes people feel like they are part of something which increases trust and confidence in the product. This podcast conversation discussed the use of social proof to increase conversions on a website.
