Power of Ten is a show about design operating at all levels of zoom, from thoughtful detail to changes in organisation, society and the world, hosted by design leadership coach, Andy Polaine.  My guest in this episode is Linn Vizard, one of Canada's leading advocates of service design who co-founded Service Design Toronto in 2013. She's the founder of, Made Manifest, a service design consultancy on a mission to make services better for Canadians, whether that's getting a blood test done, visiting City Hall to pay your property tax bill or buying the perfect luxury jewellery gift. Linn and Andy discussed the state of Service Design in a Product world. She argues the case that service design needs to focus on services for real world outcomes — services that actually get made and out there for people to use. Steph Vizard is a Melbourne-based writer who won the 2022 Banjo Prize with her then unpublished manuscript 'The Love Contract'. Twelve months on and that book has now been published by HarperCollins. I have no doubt that readers will fall in love with this charming story about enemy neighbours - Zoe and Will - who reluctantly come to the realisation that they each had the power to help the other one out of a difficult situation.  The question is of course, will they?  And what are the consequences? To find out if they do or don't you'll have to read the book. But in the meantime you can enjoy listening to the delightful Steph and I chat about her debut novel ‘The Love Contract'.   This was SO much fun.

In the news roundup the team asks if Dotdash Meredith's approach to cutting back on print is more honest than Condé Nast's - or whether it is just an attempt at massaging the truth around print decline. In the news in brief we talk about payment models for newspapers that allow people on lower incomes access to news; the impact of going online-only on broadcast channels; and the good news that podcast revenue is growing significantly! Why is it that so many service design projects still get stranded before they have been able to make an impact on customers? In this episode Linn Vizard shares her experience with what it takes to make service design real. Linn has an interesting perspective on how we might start looking at the outcomes of service design. Because the outcome of our work almost never is an actual service... So what are the outcomes we create as a community? And how can we do a better job at communicating those outcomes? Another thing that we explore in this episode is what would happen if we start treating the organisation as our design material? If services are the software that we design then we might see the organisation as the hardware on which they run... and in that sense it's quite important to understand the properties of this design material. If you've ever struggled to get your service design projects beyond the concept stage than this is definitely an episode that you don't want to miss! I hope you'll find this episode helpful as this is a really important topic that need to address in our community. And don't forget to share this episode with fellow practitioners! Today’s guest is the remarkable Linn Vizard, currently an independent service designer based in Toronto. Linn writes and speaks frequently on service design, and has taught on the topic around the world. In today’s conversation, we’ll talk about creating customer journey maps (and other maps), implementation challenges with service design, and accessibility in service design. Linn shares her journey today, including mentioning that she found herself more interested in people than things as she was studying design. When she started bringing together the service design community in Toronto, she encountered some confusion, and she’s enjoyed the process of illuminating the topic for people and creating connections with those interested in service design. Maps, Linn points out, have become a ubiquitous tool and have become a compelling entry point for people. They’re also a powerful tool for getting people excited, and to visually create a shared understanding of the space you’re working in and where the opportunities might be. Linn will also share some powerful words of wisdom about why you should go ahead and create a map as a tool to reveal what we don’t know. In our conversation, we’ll talk about diversity, inclusion, and accessibility in the realm of design. In Linn’s previous work in UX, more time and attention was paid to accessibility, she explains. This exposed her to ways of thinking about how people might be using assistive technology, for example, which has influenced her more recent work. As she transitioned into doing more service and customer experience work, Linn noticed that the conversation about accessibility was almost completely absent. Tune in to hear all about these topics, as well as the idea of double delivery, how designers can position themselves as part of a bigger team in delivering services, how to think about paying attention to soft metrics or less-tangible changes, what it means to be a leader or facilitator of a design process, which references and resources have particularly impacted Linn, and more! This is another episode in our series of interviews with technical startups, this time featuring an interview with Guntur Sandino, founder and CEO of CleVR. This company is building VRET (Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy) systems, which are used to help people deal with anxieties such as fear of flying, fear of heights or claustrophobia or psychotic disorders, such as paranoia. Welcome to Bleach Boys! This week the boys watch ALL of the Turn Back the Pendulum Arc which takes us back 110 years into the past to see what life was like when the Vizards or Visoreds were way less cool and Urahara was kinda a chump. Good news is we get to see Tessai being super cool! Seriously though Tessai seems super overpowered, why didn't he just kill Aizen on the spot? Surely the captains know all of Aizens skills as well so why didn't her just get arrested? SO MANY QUESTIONS and this is all just about the Vizards past. Feels like we almost need a second set of Vizard flashbacks, buuuut probably not as well... Please Kubo just stick to the main battle I can't handle anymore breaks!
