How do you turn a bold idea into reality? How do you deliver when things get really hard? Mark Beaumont might be the expert on this. Anyone can come up with an idea and anyone can talk about performing at a high level. But Mark Beaumont has delivered on both. He holds the world-record for cycling around the world and has now turned his considerable skills to being a venture capital investor. But that is only part of his remarkable story, which also includes capsizing in the Atlantic Ocean, making documentaries for the BBC and writing books. This episode of Business Leader is a story about endurance, setting new standards and getting things done... Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 13, 2024 is: instigate IN-stuh-gayt verb To instigate something is to cause it to happen or begin by urging or goading others. Instigate is a synonym of provoke. // The pair was accused of instigating a plot to oust the newly elected mayor. See the entry > Examples: "The image of John, Paul, George and Ringo waving from the top steps of Pan Am Yankee Clipper flight 101 at 1.20pm on 7 February 1964 is among the most iconic in rock'n'roll history. … That aeroplane steps photo was pivotal in instigating a dynamic in rock music whereby boys played guitars to the wild adulation of girls, a misguided social 'norm' that became so deeply embedded in the music industry that we're only now beginning to untangle it." — Mark Beaumont, The Independent (London), 7 Feb. 2024 Did you know? It's time to investigate the true meaning of instigate. Instigate is often used as a synonym of incite (as in "siblings instigating a fight"), but the two words differ slightly in their overall usage. Incite usually stresses an act of stirring something up that one did not necessarily initiate ("the court's decision incited riots"), while instigate implies responsibility for initiating or encouraging someone else's action, and usually suggests dubious or underhanded intent ("he was charged with instigating a conspiracy"). Coming from a form of the Latin verb instigare ("to urge on or provoke"), instigate stepped into English in the 1500s, roughly a century after incite.

James Newbury, Crossfit Games athlete, explains how a wealth of different experiences growing up has lead to him becoming a successful athlete and how learning the art of delayed gratification is crucial for performance. Dylan Hartley, former England rugby captain, then discusses what it was like to lead his country in such a high performance environment under the coaching of Eddie JonesFinally, Gaz Banford, former Sergeant Major of the SBS, talks about what we can do to adopt a high performance mindset and outlines how, nowadays, it's too easy to see people being successful rather than appreciating the journey that has lead to their success.Expect to learn what it takes to be a high performer. My conversation today will focus on a key crisis skill – endurance. And I'm thrilled to say that we have the perfect guest to help us – record-breaking, long-distance cyclist, adventurer, broadcaster and author Mark Beaumont.Mark is a man who certainly knows what it means to endure. In 2008 he broke the world record for a circumnavigational bike tour of the world, travelling 18,000 miles from Paris to Paris. The new record was set at 194 days and 17 hours, beating the previous record of 276 days. His video diaries of that ride won him a BAFTA nomination.Swapping the bike for a boat, Mark rowed through the Canadian Arctic to reach the North Magnetic Pole, the furthest north anyone had rowed. And then in early 2012 he joined another crew in an attempt to break the world record for rowing across the Atlantic Ocean. But after 27 days and over 2,000 miles into the expedition the boat capsized. Mark's retelling of the terrifying 14-hour ordeal that followed – and the reactions of all involved – alone make this an episode worth listening to.When someone had the nerve to break Mark's circumnavigation record, his reaction of course was to get on his bike. And during the summer of 2017 he smashed the new record with a total time of 78 days, 14 hours and 40 minutes. Mark has also authored a number of successful books including The Man Who Cycled the World, Around the World in 80 Days, Africa Solo and Endurance. In the 2018 New Year Honours he was awarded the British Empire Medal for Services to sport, broadcasting and charity. Cycling fan or not, this is a valuable episode for anyone looking to push the limits of human potential and understand why increasing our endurance can transform our ability to survive and thrive in crisis.Full episode transcript available at: https://www.crisiswhatcrisis.com/podcasts/mark-beaumont-on-breaking-records-cheating-death-and-pedalling-with-purpose Mark's Crisis Comforts: 1. The Bach suites. I'm a cellist, I mastered the Bach suites when I was quite young, and they've always been an absolute go-to. I appreciate that familiarity, that comfort., they give me.2. If you don't like where you are, move. You're not a tree. If you're in a crisis, if things are going wrong. Move. Don't sit with it, don't dwell with it, don't stew with it, move. You've got the choice to move, have the confidence to move.3. My mum's cheesecake. I often say to people, “If you're having a psychological crisis, it's normally connected to a nutritional crisis.” So, if you're having trouble, eat something. That's got me out of a lot of difficult places. It's amazing, the power of food, to reframe your thinking, your stress.Links: Buy Mark's latest book – Endurance - https://amzn.to/3JAWI2N Mark's website - https://markbeaumontonline.com/ Follow Mark on Twitter - https://twitter.com/MrMarkBeaumont Follow Mark in Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/mrmarkbeaumont/?hl=en Follow Mark on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/MarkBeaumontAdventures Stream/Buy ‘Allies' by Some Velvet Morning: https://ampl.ink/qp6bmSome Velvet Morning Website: www.somevelvetmorning.co.ukYour Daily Practice: Sleep by Myndstream: https://open.spotify.com/track/5OX9XgJufFz9g63o2Dv2i5?si=b2f9397c92084682Host – Andy CoulsonCWC production team: Louise Difford, Ed Isaacs and Jane SankeyWith special thanks to Global

The remarkable true story of an unrivalled journey to recreate the greatest run in film history: 15,621 miles, five-times across the United States. 'Rob Pope has made his name revelling in challenges that range from the unconventional to the extraordinary.' BBC News Becoming Forrest is the incredible story of Englishman Rob Pope, a veterinarian who left his job in pursuit of a dream - to become the first person ever to complete the epic run undertaken by one of Hollywood's most beloved characters, Forrest Gump. After his momma urged him "to do one thing in life that made a difference", he flew to Alabama, put on his running shoes, and sped off into the wilderness. His remarkable journey covered 15,600 miles, the distance from the North to the South Pole and a third of the way back. Over a grueling 18 months, braving injuries, blizzards, forest fires and deadly wildlife, he crossed the United States five times. During one of the most turbulent periods in recent American history, Rob immersed himself in American life. His time on the open road saw him forever changed, trying to make that difference, in the process of Becoming Forrest. This is a tale of one man who just wanted to make a difference. "Rob Pope is a real-life Hollywood superstar!' - Dean Karnazes, author of Ultramarathon Man "'A simply staggering feat of endurance and storytelling. The tenacity, curiosity and humour of Rob's amazing journey comes through in every page of this wonderful tale about people, discovery and a very, very long road."-Mark Beaumont, author of The Man Who Cycled the World "'With tons of humor Rob Pope takes us into one of the greatest running journeys. Lace up your shoes and enjoy this excellent book!"-Kilian Jornet, runner and author of Above the Clouds "'What Rob has achieved both physically and mentally is mind-blowing, a true feat of human endurance."-Tom Evans, Ultrarunner "'A very readable and entertaining travelogue about an effing extraordinary run."-Damian Hall, author of In It for the Long Run: Breaking Records and Getting FKT "'Most of us watched that scene and thought: cute. Pope watched it and thought: could that be possible? . Like Gump, Pope also experienced what it was like to drift through America when history rears its ugly head. . He brightens people's day. Pope is serious about running, but, just like Gump, he doesn't overthink it. Why should someone run? 'Because you want to,' he says."-The Observer "'A stirring chronicle . What quickly becomes striking - on top of the extreme distance of his runs, often 'forty miles every day without rest' - is Pope's innate curiosity and fascination with the world around him. . This is sure to inspire distance runners as well as those interested in a hearty slice of Americana."- Publishers Weekly starred review

It's easy to think of elite athletes as physical outliers, genetic anomalies who are destined for success. But of course, just because you have the tools doesn't mean you can put it all together. The greatest athletes in any sport aren't the most physically gifted; they're the ones who transcended their physical limitations and became something more. Training, mental fortitude, problem solving, poise under pressure — athletes have myriad skills that have been forged in the crucible of competition. And these skills don't just apply to sports. They're transferable to the courtroom and the law office. To that end, we're bringing you the best insights from our conversations with four of the world's most elite athletes so that you can step up your performance and make your career elite. It's All About Preparation For all these athletes, the wins and records stem from training. But it's not just about hitting the gym; it's the mentality you bring to that practice. George Foreman III never lost a professional fight, in part because he challenged himself in training and took his losses there. By the time he got in the ring, the bout was simple compared to what he had overcome before. For attorneys, so much of the outcome is determined before you set foot in the courtroom. The game is when you show how well you've prepared. Edging the Competition in the Details Each of these athletes also carries incredible competitive spirit. But to turn success into dominance, you can't just rely on best practices — that's what Mat Fraser found. At the elite levels of CrossFit, everybody was training hard. To win five titles in a row, Mat had to find the 1% gains on the fringes — perfecting his nutrition, his sleep, his travel. Stacking these small advantages gave him an edge on competition that led to sustained excellence. Just Keep Pushing And just like law, reaching new heights involves navigating the low points. In their journeys, Mark Beaumont and James Lawrence pushed themselves to the limit. They fought through injuries, exhaustion, and the elements. As they persevered, they found they had reserves of strength they didn't even know about. When James reached his goal of 100 triathlons in 100 days, he ran another, just to show that you can always do one more. Mental toughness isn't simply a cliche. It's a skill, cultivated by consistently challenging yourself. There's so much for game-changers to learn from these athletes. Their competitive spirit is parallel to some of the top attorneys in the field, as is their relentless drive to be great. So pop in your earbuds, click play, and start your training. No montage necessary. In this episode: George Foreman III on taking losses in preparation to avoid them when it counts Mark Beaumont on how to persevere when you're at your lowest Mat Fraser on the 1% gains that separate you at an elite level James Lawrence on developing and using your support system Links and Resources The Game Changing Attorney Podcast Michael Mogill Facebook Michael Mogill Twitter Michael Mogill Instagram Michael Mogill LinkedIn Crisp Website Crisp Facebook Crisp Twitter Crisp Instagram Crisp LinkedIn George Foreman III - Episode 34 of The Game Changing Attorney Podcast Mark Beaumont - Episode 60 of The Game Changing Attorney Podcast Mat Fraser - Episode 63 of The Game Changing Attorney Podcast James Lawrence - Episode 73 of The Game Changing Attorney Podcast
This week we talk to Mark Beaumont after answering two listener questions and getting an update on Nicks' new bike! About Mark Over the past two decades Mark has pushed the limits of endurance, spoken at thousands of events and worked in over 100 countries. Amongst other Guinness World Records he remains the fastest person to have cycled around the planet. Marks passion for entrepreneurship takes him into a range of businesses, backing innovation and advising on growth. He lives in Edinburgh, Scotland with his wife Nicci and two daughters. First Question I have too much junk in my trunk - what do I really need to carry on a 30-180 minute ride. I don't want to have to hire a sherpa but also don't want to have to call AAA for the most minor issue. What is the right size package for group activities? -TooMuchJunkInTheTrunk Second Question "I've come to an impasse with my bike. It's getting older, 105 10speed and aluminum. I like to ride all kinds of surfaces and I am not a racer by any stretch. As my wife says I am frugal, what are some really good aluminum options on the market. I would prefer to keep my organs on the inside and not sell them. Thanks, (Frugal) Fred"

Mark Beaumont! Many years I lay in my bed dreaming of having my various bands reviewed by Mark. It never happened because we didn't have what it takes! We didn't I tell you! However Mark did and does. He's been there from touring with Blur to breaking some of the coolest most musically inspired bands of several generations. He's had the highs and lows that really makes for a bloody brilliant story. He's currently writing his ass off so find his work! He's got an awesome unique ear. @limehousepod - twitter If you like the title music then check out The DIY Cravings on Soundcloud Take care and enjoy what's left of your sanity. John and Gords head to Teignmouth in Devon (not literally) to discuss the career and discography of power rock trio Muse, ranking their albums and assembling a playlist of their favourite tracks from each. Warning: we overuse the word "bombastic" but we try not to overdo the Radiohead comparisons, so it's not too bad. The Muse Jeffrey Podcast Playlist is available here on Spotify and here on Deezer. As part of the research for this podcast we read Muse: Out of this World by Mark Beaumont and Muse: Inside The Muscle Museum by Ben Myers. Jefflinks Produced David Bottrill ("Origin of Symmetry") also produced top album "The Ideal Crash" by Jeffrey favourites dEUS, as well as their 2011 album "Keep You Close" and a couple of tracks on 2012's "The Following Sea". The late Storm Thorgerson, album cover designer and Hipgnosis co-founder, went to school with Pink Floyd founders Syd Barrett and Roger Waters and was a good friend of guitarist David Gilmour. He went on to design most of Pink Floyd's album covers, and also designed the covers for "Absolution" and "Black Holes and Revelations" by Muse (their best covers by a mile).

And what she learned from nine months at sea in a 8m boat.We touch briefly on the huge and exciting topic of the sports science specifically in women's bodies, training and sport. How to manage good mental and physical wellbeing, spotting the signs of stress, overwhelm and breakdowns, hopefully before you hit rock bottom, but crucially after you have been there to stop it happening again. Then we discuss how she managed herself and her own wellbeing while supporting Mark Beaumont on his astonishing achievement of cycling round the world in less than 80 days. It's a varied conversation and I feel like we only brushed the surface of so many exciting topics. It doesn't matter who you happen to be, whether it's Mark Beaumont, Josie Dew, Alastair Humphreys, Fred Bloggs or even (dare I say) Andrew P. Sykes, if you're intent upon embarking on a long-distance cycling adventure of your own, at some point you need to move out of your comfort zone, push the bike out of the garden gate and set off cycling, however uncomfortable that may feel, initially at least. That's what Abigail Melton and Lilith Cooper decided to do and they've just written about their experiences as first-time cycle tourists in a new book called Gears For Queers.
Mark is an ultra-endurance athlete, he holds the world record for cycling around the world in 78 days. Mark has also cycled the Americas, Africa and has many other expeditions under his belt. It was great to catch up with him and learn about his mindset during these endeavors, how he came to be an ultra-endurance athlete and his current state of mind during the Covid19 crisis. Early on we speak about how having "no boundaries" and being a bit "different" was the spark that Mark needed to try things that were outside the box and that eventually & gradually led him to experiment with bigger and bigger pursuits. Mark Beaumont, record-breaking cyclist who peddled his way around the world in less than 80 days joins us to discuss perseverance- among other things. He notes in passing, early on in the conversation that he had broken bones for most of the trip. But his focus in the interview- as it was then- was to accomplish the ultimate goal. And the ultimate goal was accomplished by achieving the daily goal every day. His focus was on cycling an average of 240 miles each day. He shattered his original record by 44 days, meaning the ultimate goal wasn't about beating the number- it was optimizing his human output.
