Your identity is your ignitor and your commitment to yourself is your fuel to endure. If you decide to procrastinate then you're making a conscious choice to delay your contribution to progress and potential we can all capitalize on. Luckily according to CBS News: Most Americans are not procrastinators, at least when it comes to how they view themselves. 69% of Americans say they tend to think of themselves more as people who like to get things done right away, rather than put off doing things. But just over a quarter of Americans – 27% - say they tend to put off doing things. Eric M. Twiggs is a founding partner and president of The What Now Movement. Eric is a founding partner and president of The What Now Movement. His mission is to build high performing entrepreneurs, authors, and career professionals, who are prepared for life's unexpected curve balls. As a coach, podcast host, and author (The Discipline Of Now: 12 Practical Principles To Overcome Procrastination) Eric has spent a lot of time on himself and in working with others to try to figure out how to help people find clarity on their vision and then develop a realistic plan to get there. We got off to an interesting start as Eric chose "family" as his most important value. As Eric stated, family was not always the most important value. There was a time when achievements, building his business, and grinding was what it was all about. So we spent some time digging into that to understand how/why he shifted to value family more and frankly to understand if he did actually change or just wished he could. How do we ever really know that we are being honest with ourselves about what drives us, what we want out of life, and how we prioritize our time? Eric had some interesting thoughts on all of this. For him, it is about doing the work to find clarity and confidence in your vision for life. It all has to start with your vision because it is too easy to fall off course if you aren't grounded in a vision you truly believe in. For many people that all makes sense and we've heard it before, but the question is how do you actually do it? How do I overcome my fear, ego, and insecurities to find my vision? How do I have the confidence to know that the vision I think I want is actually the right vision for me? How do I actually change my mindset so that I can go stop self sabotaging myself? A big thanks to Eric for talking through these unbelievably complex questions with me and providing his personal experiences and journey along the way.

Start now because tomorrow could be too late. Eric Twiggs is a founding partner and president of The What Now Movement and is author of The Discipline of Now: 12 Practical Principles to Overcome Procrastination and that is the topic of today’s show. Find out how to get motivated, maximize your time, and make yourself accountable. KEY TAKEAWAYS One of Eric's core values is Excellence. The earlier you start on a creative project, the greater chance it has of being excellent. There is a link between innovation and preparation. Valuing excellence motivates him to start earlier. If you get into the habit of making appointments with yourself, it is 40% more likely to happen. Don’t just say that you’ll do something. Put it in your calendar, give it a time and place. Make yourself accountable. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is saying yes to too many things. Success brings opportunity, but not every opportunity is the right one. Too much on your plate can lead to less time with your family and less time to focus on your important work. There are only 24 hours in a day, so try saying no until you know more about what you’re saying yes to. As human beings, we want completion. We get satisfaction from it. Fear is one of the leading causes of procrastination. This can be fear of failure, fear of the unknown, fear of change. Your attitude is at the foundation of your success. Within the average person 80% of our thoughts are negative. If you’re a pessimist, you’re more likely to procrastinate. The only way to get rid of a habit is to start a new one, replace the negativity with gratefulness, what are you grateful for? We all have times of day where we have more energy, and this varies from person to person. It’s all about awareness. We all struggle with it from time to time, but for some of us, procrastination levels can become overwhelming. That's where Eric's tips come in. If you find yourself simply unable to tackle the tasks on your daily to-do list and don't know where to start, this is the episode for you. Eric has tons of actionable tips up his sleeve. When you listen to our conversation, you'll not only learn how to get down to the source of your procrastination and uncover its triggers, but also how to overcome those triggers, set better goals, and finally accomplish those goals when you want to. In this episode[1:49] Eric introduces himself, gives us a look at his work and background, and explains how he got interested in finding solutions to procrastination.[4:18] Eric says the key to tackling procrastination is to first become aware of it, its patterns, and what triggers it - whether it's task aversion, anxiety, or a number of other things. [5:52] Eric discusses some common procrastination triggers, from your circadian rhythm to perfectionism. [7:48] What's the next step to take after you identify a possible trigger? Eric says to focus on the process rather than the outcome.[9:11] Eric says the most basic thing you can do is get into the habit of making an appointment with yourself. Putting a task on your calendar increases your likelihood of doing it by 80%![11:40] Eric introduces a technique he calls the Twiggs top five: each night, write down the five most critical things you need to do for the next day.Support the show (https://jeffmendelson.com/onebigtip)

Now on to my guest for today, Eric Twiggs, a speaker, coach, and author of the book The Discipline of Now: 12 Practical Principles To Overcome Procrastination. Eric first realized he needed to find his purpose and stop wasting time after a college friend died in a car accident. After becoming successful in his career, he had another epiphany: he wanted to make a difference in people's lives. So he became a speaker and author, inspiring people to make change in their own lives. In April, he and three partners started the What Now Movement, a platform on Facebook to empower people to pivot in response to the pandemic. When it comes to procrastination, Eric offers a three-part framework in his book, The Discipline of Now: what's the cost, what's the cause, and what's the cure? Eric also shared many insights into what it takes to be a successful speaker, from being prepared and showing up early to get to know people before the talk, to never ending on a Q and A session. Cultivating a positive mindset by reframing thoughts, counting wins, and learning from failures are three principles Eric espouses and lives by. Now let's get better together. Actions to Try or Advice to TakeTwiggs offered many pieces of advice in our talk; here are just a few tips he gives when preparing a presentation: Remember the rule of three. People remember best when information comes in three. Think of yourself as the messenger; “you're just the mailman,” Twiggs says. This will help you be less invested in how the message is received. Focus on the positive. Whether it's appreciating the good things in life, or just looking at what you can learn from mistakes or failures, always look for the positive.
