"It's lovely to think of being able to walk into a situation with 20 years of hindsight now...I really felt a part of it...I was able to bring my own ideas, right from the start" — Michael Johnston20 years ago, keyboardist/songwriter Michael Johnston was—like so many of us—a Skydiggers fan. However, being a sideman in one of his favourite bands hadn't occured to him, since—at that point—he was performing his own material and working mostly as a solo artist under his own name. Then one day Andy and Josh asked him to sit in for a few songs, and he gradually found himself living in what he refers to as an "imaginary dream state". Working from scratch, he developed keyboard parts that complemented the songs he'd come to know and love. Today, he's an integral part of the Skydiggers sound, and also a co-writer on several tracks. This interview was recorded at The Tragically Hip's Bathouse Studio in Bath, Ontario, during the recording of Skydiggers new album Dreams and Second Chances (available everywhere May 9, 2025). This conversation is a must-listen for anyone looking to unlock their full potential. IMHO, the best kind of humans can access deep joy and light because they have sat in their darkness and shadows. Olivia is exactly that! We talk about the path from anger, pain, shame and addiction to living from a quiet mind and safe body. Olivia shares how breathwork blew her heart open and invited her to follow what she calls ‘the yellow brick road home to myself'. Breathwork is such a mysterious and deceptively simple practice. Olivia describes how peaceful, soft, and undefended she feels, how she is able to lean into challenging experiences, in particular, grieving for her mother right now. It's so lush to hear her describe this. Now, Olivia is a breathwork practitioner; she holds women's circles and the most divine retreats (on my bucket list for when we return to the UK).Listen in for the richest conversation about what self-love looks and feels like. What it means to let go of labels of ‘good and bad', to feel our feelings, to build our capacity to be in the mess of life.I found our first date so healing, I just know you will love Olivia.Connect with Olivia:Website and Instagram.Self-belief School with Sas This is a public episode. In today's episode, I chat with Tom Jones, the founder of Cricket Coach 365 and the University of Manchester Men's Cricket First Team Coach. Tom goes on to ask me many questions about mental toughness, the role of the environment, how we can help cricketers play to the best of their ability more often and a whole lot more. By listening to this episode you'll learn more about how I work as a Sports Psychologist, and my thoughts on how cricket coaches can better support their players. Key Learning Points: As a coaches seek to understand your players have environmental preferences that help or hinder their focus and concentration. Music can be a positive warm up tool for some cricketers however individual needs should be respected. Coaches should tread with caution when you mention the words “YOU MUST WORK HARD.” All players are coachable despite what many people assume. Playing and coaching cricket is awash with changing emotions that can have a huge influence on decision making. Episode Notes “To live with OCD is to be vulnerable to the machinations of your own mind...It is an Affliction that lives in me as a powerful, painful intimidation.” So writes John Andrew Bryant in his award-winning book A Quiet Mind to Suffer With: Mental Illness, Trauma, and the Death of Christ, a book in which he recounts how a mental breakdown, a stay in a psychiatric ward, and being diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder led to a life-changing understanding of who Jesus is and what following him is and isn't about. He and Dr. Keith Plummer talk about his ongoing journey marked by affliction, mercy, and hope. They also discuss how the church can better serve those with mental illness.
One of the trickiest aspects of new technology is that it can sometimes destabilize parts of our lives that we didn't even realize existed and are important. In this episode, Cal talks about one such idea: the quiet mind. Our constant phone usage is eliminating this critical cognitive state, and by doing so is diminishing our humanity. Cal makes the case for the importance of the quiet mind, and then gives concrete ideas for cultivating it in a distracted world. He also answers questions from listeners and reviews the five books he read in June.Below are the questions covered in today's episode (with their timestamps). Get your questions answered by Cal! Quiet your mind as you listen to this guided meditation led by Julie Potiker. She completes the meditation with her poem, "Garden Dreams"."Garden Dreams", by Julie PotikerJasmine, roses - lavender flowers dot the rosemary hedge.I'm in a clapboard house, sleeping over with other women, some sort of retreat.Roni is there too.Grasping at imagesFragments of feelingsSnippets of conversationsTrying to hold onto the story-lineas it disappears in a wisp of vapor as I open my eyes,3 minutes before my alarm bell.I think it was a good dream.I think so … yes, a good dream, as I uncurl my body under the comforter, still hugging the warm soft fabric up over my shoulders.I was researching little pansy flowers called Johnny Jump Upbefore falling back to sleep in the early morning light. That flower is the star of a poem by Jill Hallthat I plan to share with my meditation groupI got so into researching them that I imagined planting them in lush beds under some of my old growth trees - bright lemon yellow and violet facessmiling in the partial sun.Maybe I should always read about flowers before closing my eyesand slipping into sleep, it makes for garden dreams!"Garden Dreams", by Julie PotikerFind out more about using mindfulness in everyday life through Julie's books, "SNAP: From Calm to Chaos", and "Life Falls Apart, But You Don't have To: Mindful Methods for Staying Calm in the Midst of Chaos". Cricket is a unique sport where despite being a team sport it can also be argued to be an individual sport. One of the biggest challenges is batting and dealing with the aftermath of low scores and the walk of shame. In this BITE-SIZED episode, Tom Jones, a highly qualified youth cricket coach and owner of Cricket Coach 365 and I discuss mental toughness when batting and offer you advice on how to deal with the pressures that you will likely face. Key Learning Points: As a batter the walk to and from the wicket can be difficult for youngsters especially when they haven't performed well. The ability to come to recognise that you will fail more than you will succeed can help you. When batting understanding what is within your control and what is outside of your control is useful. The closest parallel to batting when you get out, is missing a penalty in football, in a penalty shootout. Catastrophizing as a batter when you perform poorly is very easy – why not ask yourself the question how can I have a positive influence on the rest of the game? Listen for the place inside that feels like, ‘I have', instead of ‘I want', by: Hearing the thought/desire Immediately shifting to feeling Silent-Love View every desire today as an alarm reminding you to BE Love, again. Reminding you to RELAX, again. To lower your shoulders, again. To smile, again. In this way, each desire is immediately dissolved in Love— the formless essence of both the thought and material form. Love is the formless essence of everything, including you, and when you're aware as That, you lack nothing. You are already whole and when you're conscious of It, you project a wholly and holy abundant world. As desire disappears, fulfillment appears. Be still in This. Trust. Smile. I Love you! It is then known as the mind." -The Yoga Vasistha "Mind is Consciousness in motion. Consciousness is mind at rest." -Rupert Spira "When the mind becomes still, the world begins to disappear (becomes unreal)." -Robert Adams "You're looking for beauty outside of yourself. You have to learn that you are the beauty. You are the joy. You are the flowers that you enjoy so much. You are the trees and the ocean and the sky and the mountains. It's all coming from you. If you really realize that you are that, would you run around seeking things? Everything that you want is within you. You are that. Even relationships. You look for relationship with someone so they can make you happy, so you can enjoy their company, so you can love them, so you can be with them. But I can assure you that within yourself is a greater love, a greater joy, a greater peace than you can ever find anywhere else. True. You've got it all. There is nothing, no thing that you need from the outside. And nothing can ever happen to you, because there is no one to make it happen, except yourself." -Robert Adams in a talk June 1991 "The soul is perfect; what can you improve? You have everything; what is there to gratify? Aum will seek out the man of contemplation; Reveal to him the wonder of great secrets." –The Book of Ashes, Dadaji “If you want to see God, kill desires. ... When you have a desire for something, don't act on it and it will go away. If you desire to drink this cup of tea, don't, and the desire for it will go away.” -Maharajji
We are all "lifelong learners" but we are taught early on to "figure things out." Everyone can remember being told as a child, "Think about it. You'll figure it out." As we move through life, we spend more and more time going over and over life situations in our minds, trying to come up with answers, or asking other people for answers and then trying to figure out how to follow their ideas. This takes us away from the most wonderful resource we have: the ability to have original thought, ideas that occur to us out of the blue in a quiet state of mind. When we are looking for what we don't know, we won't find it in our stored thought (our personal mind), which only contains memories, things we DO know. But we have a safety net, the capacity to stop trying to come up with an answer and wait, in a quiet state of mind, to see what occurs to us. Fresh answers come from before our personal thought; they arise from a deeper wisdom, before thought, always accessible when we have faith it is there for us.Support the Show.

These extracts from Krishnamurti's talks on meditation have been taken from various sources and are intended for contemplation. Jiddu Krishnamurti (12 May 1895 – 17 February 1986) was an Indian philosopher, speaker and writer. In his early life he was groomed to be the new World Teacher but later rejected this mantle and withdrew from the Theosophy organization behind it. He stressed the need for a revolution in the psyche of every human being and emphasised that such revolution cannot be brought about by any external entity, be it religious, political, or social.

What does the Gospel of Jesus Christ have to say to those who wrestle with mental illness? This month's Lexham Press book of the month arrested Matt's attention. It's like Augustine's Confessions in a contemporary idiom as a really profound searching exploration of one man's personal experience of OCD and his identity in Christ. So, today Matt and Alastair talk to the author, John Bryant. You will better understand how to simply be with a person with mental illness in a way that is best for them.
