Welcome back to "Mayoral Mondays!" We're asking all four mayoral candidates why they're the right person to lead Pittsburgh. This week, Host Megan Harris is talking to Thomas West, the only candidate who's a newcomer to politics. West has owned TRIM, a clothing store in Lawrenceville, for 11 years, and he's also worked as a producer for WPXI and WTAE. This episode is the third installment in our "Mayoral Mondays" series. Next week, we'll be talking to the final mayoral candidate, former police officer Tony Moreno. Plus, listen to our previous installments. Incumbent Mayor Ed Gainey makes his pitch for why he deserves a second term, and Democratic challenger Corey O'Connor explains why he wants to be Pittsburgh's next mayor. Running the business with the end in mind improves its future saleability and also enhances how the business operates today.Laurie Barkman, is the CEO of The Business Transition Sherpa, adjunct professor of entrepreneurship, and podcast host. She is the former CEO of a $100 million revenue company that was sold to a Fortune 50. Her expertise in business transition, succession, entrepreneurship, marketing, and M&A has been spotlighted in various media like Newsweek, Forbes, Yahoo! Finance, WTAE/abc, and more. After going through an acquisition herself, she recognized the importance of helping business owners with succession planning and building value proactively. Many business owners don't consider exit planning early enough and that is a crucial step not only for later-stage companies. The usual scenario is selling when the company is in bad shape is the worst option. Lori offers examples of how business owners can make their business more attractive to buyers and some might be weird to most owners. But the process of preparing your business for sale allows you to leave on your terms, ensuring your legacy continues while you reap the rewards of your hard work.Show notes:

SS Director Rowe, why was Thomas Crooks walking around unabated? #secretservice #thomascrooks #trump For at least an hour before the shooting, Crooks was seen walking around near the rally area. Crooks was seen in video obtained by Pittsburgh ABC affiliate WTAE pacing just beyond the boundaries of the Trump rally at 5:06 p.m., around one hour and five minutes before shots were first fired. He was also seen walking around near the magnetometers minutes before the shooting, according to law enforcement sources. Some witnesses reported him as a suspicious person, law enforcement sources said. He then made his way to a nearby building, climbing up air conditioner units until he was able to get on the roof of an adjacent building, according to sources. From there, he moved onto a taller building next to it. Just before Crooks opened fire, rallygoers spotted him on the roof and tried to alert the Secret Service. In an unclassified briefing Wednesday, law enforcement officials said 20 minutes passed between when Secret Service snipers first spotted Crooks on the roof and when he opened fire on Trump. He was identified as a person of interest 62 minutes before the shooting, they said. (ABC News)

The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police has made major changes to its operation as it battles staffing shortages - including no longer responding to 'in-progress emergencies' and limiting the number of officers on the night shift. Police Chief Larry Scirotto announced in February that during the earlier morning hours there will be fewer officers on staff and lower priority calls will get sent to a telephone reporting unit rather than a person. The chief said the changes need to be made so his 740 officers can more efficiently serve the community, reported WTAE. According to WPXI, calls for theft, harassment, criminal mischief and burglary alarms will all be handled by the telephone reporting unit. 'When there is an event that is not in-progress, we're going to take an reroute that call to our telephone reporting unit,' said Scirotto. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/darien-dunstan3/message
When his 6-year-old daughter becomes unresponsive, Jacob Weight calls 911. He tells dispatch one of his older children was bathing his 6-year-old when she went limp and suffered some type of seizure. First responders are met by Jacob at the door. He refuses to allow EMS into the house, telling them he must get his daughter dressed. He brings her outside where she can be seen. Police and first responders are taken aback by the conditions at the home. Trash is scattered about. Feces is smeared on the ground, and the smell of urine is very strong. The 6-year-old girl they have been called to treat is covered in open sores and KDKA reports she has extensive bruises and appears malnourished. Once the 6-year-old girl is at the hospital the full extent of her injuries is apparent. According to a medical report, her teeth are broken and rotted, and her feet are swollen. When she arrives at Uniontown Hospital, she is found to be hypothermic, with a body temperature registering at only 88.7 degrees Fahrenheit. Pennsylvania state troopers begin their investigation into the parents of the children in the house, after police note that doctors at the hospital state multiple times, that the little girl could have died as a result of the abuse and neglect. The doctors also say if she returns to her current environment she is likely to die of the abuse and neglect. During the investigation, Weight and Frost's teenage nephew, who lived with them, describes how the young girl's mother would zip-tie her hands and feet, lock her naked in a cage and refuse to wash her. Frost would also starve the little girl, not feeding her for days at a time. The floor under the cage was rotting from feces and urine that was never cleaned. WTAE reports that a 5-year-old child was interviewed and asked if anyone helped the girl clean up her poop and pee. The child responded, "They want her to eat it... my parents." Jacob William Weight, 37, and 33-year-old Mimi Ann Frost are charged with child abuse, involuntary servitude, and strangulation among several other offenses. They are accused of starving their daughter while making sure their other children and dogs, had plenty to eat. In this chapter of the Book of the Dead, we partnered with CJ from Beyond the Rainbow-True Crimes of The LGBT to bring you the story of the Unsolved Murder of Kaylene Oehling on the anniversary of her disappearance. Kaylene Oehling was a 19-year-old Bi-sexual woman who had recently found out she was pregnant when she disappeared on January 10th, 2020 after going to meet her, much older, ex-boyfriend, Michael Manno, to get some of her personal belongings back. That would be the last time anyone would see Kaylene alive. What would follow would be a 3-year-long fight by her father, Jason, to find his daughter, and make sure the man who killed his daughter is brought to justice.Follow Beyond the Rainbow here: https://beyondtherainbowpodcast.comListen Here Connect with us on Social Media! You can find us at:Patreon: The Book of the Dead PodcastInstagram: @bookofthedeadpodX: @bkofthedeadpodFacebook: The Book of the Dead PodcastTikTok: BookofthedeadpodOr visit our website at www.botdpod.com Don't forget to Rate, Review, & Share with someone who would like the PodcastFor a full list of resources, please send us an email :)Promo for: Weird True CrimeWelcome to your weekly source for the weirdest, most questionable cases in true crime. Welcome back everyone to “The Really REAL Real Estate Podcast!” As we wrap up the first week of April, it's time to start a new mini-series here at “The Really REAL Real Estate Podcast.” This month, we are focusing on the different facets of being a landlord and owning income-producing properties. Today, we start with the basic concept of what it really means to be a landlord. Many people love the idea of owning income-producing properties and collecting the monthly rent checks. However, when the reality of owning rental units sets in, many “landlords” loathe the idea of dealing with the difficulties that come with selecting tenants and managing their own rental properties. Today, we talk about some of the key points that need to be given serious consideration before getting into the rental business. TALKING POINTS (3-5): - Introduction ***FIRST DISCLAIMER – WE ARE ONLY DISCUSSING INCOMING PRODUCING PROPERTIES WITH THIS MINI-SERIES, NOT FLIPS!*** ***SECOND DISCLAIMER – THIS IS A GREAT BUSINESS TO MAKE MONEY IN, BUT ONLY IF YOU PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO RUNNING THE BUSINESS!*** - Do you understand that owning income-producing property is a business and you need to make sure the business is profitable? - The job is more than collecting rent checks each month. - Rent is considered income, which means you must declare it on your taxes. - Issues WILL arise (whether you are managing the properties yourself or if you have hired a property management company to do it for you)! - The previous bullet points leads to the question of “how will I make a profit each month?” - What are your qualifications going to be when it comes to selecting tenants? - Decisions MUST be based on numbers and facts ALONE! - Your qualifications must be consistent across the board. - The perfect tenant DOES NOT exist! - You CANNOT be worried about what the neighbors think! - Are you prepared to handle the legal side of owning income-producing properties? - Non-payment of rents - Non-payment of the utilities - Significant damage to the property - Illegal substances found in the home - Evictions - Read Floor collapse at off-campus apartment building near IUP campus – WTAE app - Final thoughts HASH TAGS: #landlord #rental #incomeproducingproperties LINKS: JASON: https://jasonwilcox.cbintouch.com/ https://www.zillow.com/profile/jasonwilcox1987/ https://www.youtube.com/c

Former NFLer and Pittsburgh native AQ Shipley joined the show. AQ talked about the battle he had with Pat McAfee yesterday about legendary WTAE meteorologist Joe DeNardo. AQ said he loved living in Pittsburgh, but he doesn't mind the consistent weather living in Phoenix. Poni asked AQ about the Steelers offensive line and he talked about how they have been a pleasant surprise so far. AQ highlighted a lot of stuff that goes into playing offensive line that not many people realize, especially when it is a group that is still in the early stages of working together. He thinks the Steelers offensive line will continue to get better. AQ said Mitch Trubisky has played plenty of football, but the Steelers are calling plays as if they're protecting him, but it's most important in the NFL to push the football down the field. He said it's very hard in this era to run the ball and rely on your defense and preached the importance of chunk plays. AQ said the Chuks Okorafor splash on a Browns defender was not a dirty play, but players have to be smart about where the game has gone in terms of safety and why it would be viewed that way. Poni asked AQ about being drafted by the Steelers and how much he learned in his short time in Pittsburgh that led to a successful NFL career, with a lot of credit to Casey Hampton. He said Haloti Ngata was probably the toughest guy he faced in a game. He also gave a shout out to some WPIAL guys that were in high school the same time AQ was at Moon.
The Steelers are three days away from the must-win against the Jets. Matt Canada talked today and said the team has made the right changes for the offense. Does that make you feel any better? The excuses are growing thin for Mitch Trubisky and Canada. Also – RIP Coolio. And Aaron Judge hit his 61st home run last night – tying the all-time American League single season HR record, while Roger Maris Jr. thinks it should be THE record once he hits 62. Our girl Tori Yorgey from WTAE had to deal with some drunk fans during a live report Saturday before the game. Aditi talked about the Steelers RB room and if anyone will get added to it. Kenny Pickett played well Saturday night and the Steelers should give him an opportunity against better competition. It shouldn't take a Mason Rudolph trade for the Steelers to make changes in the depth chart. Chris thinks the team is just taking its time a little bit and we could see Kenny move up by this weekend. Chris expects Pickett to be the second quarterback in the game this Saturday in Jacksonville. The guys talked about how impressive George Pickens was in his debut.

There is tragedy, redemption, summer baseball atmosphere, life lessons and Beth throws a few pitches herself as scenes are captured by photographers Paul Ruggeri and Dave Forstate. Along with her productions at WQED, Beth Dolinar is known widely for her work at WTAE and you can read her weekly column in the Observer-Reporter in Washington, PA.

In case you missed it on the show, some of us are a little more excited about weather than others.. Kristen called in the reinforcement on this one and asked WTAE's Ashley Dougherty to join the Y'd Awake Morning Show for the lowdown on all things weather! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Every morning when we're watching WTAE for the morning news, Stoney can't help but profess his love to the TV about Elena LaQuarta. Since we were already on the phone with WTAE's Ashley Dougherty talking about all things weather, we couldn't help but mention his love for Elena. This is how the conversation unfolded. Multiple Emmy Award winning WQED Producer Beth Dolinar discusses her most recent program "Future Jobs: Starting Over," available for streaming on the wqed.org website and a follow-up virtual event - "Future Jobs: Reskilling" - which takes place July 7th at 7pm. The coronavirus pandemic is among many reasons that millions of American workers are looking to "reskill" or "upskill" as they prepare for different careers. This documentary follows several Western Pennsylvanians in various stages of identifying, training, and working in new jobs - all guided by emerging trends in the workforce. Those sharing their stories: an out-of-work DJ who is learning computer coding; a nursing student turned heavy equipment operator; formerly incarcerated men currently learning the trades; an anthropology student who became an airplane mechanic; a former steelworker now working as a nurse. Beth also fills us in on her column published weekly in the Washington Observer Reporter and her musical upbringing with a Dad who was a band director and a Mom who taught piano lessons. In her ten years at WTAE on camera, what was the one story thought brought tears to the eye? Beth Dolinar reveals it in this conversation with Jim Cunningham.

They talk about the evolution of sports and news coverage during a pandemic and the #BlackLivesMatter movement, what sports, from high school to the pros, have the best chance of success during this pandemic, and Andrew makes a bold prediction about how locker room dynamics will change forever.
Doug Loves Movies returns with a fresh slate of streaming options including an Office reunion that's outta this world on Netflix, PFT Commenter joined us just as the Drew Brees apology broke, Stan Savran and Ryan Recker of WTAE remember a Pitt legend, and it might be better for the Pittsburgh Pirates if the 2020 season just didn't happen.
The things we do for breadsticks... In this installment of the podcast, a full episode's worth of the sort of absurdity that could only emerge from our uniquely absurd times, Kevin Horne recounts his brush with viral social media fame stemming from his blow-by-blow live Tweeting of a very chaotic Mother's Day at the Cranberry Township Olive Garden. Packed with the types of digressions beloved by the Obligatory faithful (and bemusing to all others), from the perils of being named "Karen" in 2020 to the literal interpretation of Giant Eagle, this is an especially lighthearted installment of the show that is sure to make you chuckle. Kevin tells his story and describes the interesting aftermath. Enjoy. Stay safe. Stay sanitized. Stay home. The Hens are finally starting to return to their old form as podcasters. Sure this episode is slightly more "fired up" than most but they talk about serious subjects like "cancel culture" and The Sandy Hook Promise. They talk about less serious subjects too like the 25th Anniversary of the television show Friends and Rose going to see Erasure when she was only 16 years old in Cleveland."My paw was the only part of me in the room with them while they recorded but from what I heard on the other side of the door, this podcast is hysterical. This week's debate involves a despicable type of human: a person who presents themselves as an angel in the public eye, but is secretly heinous. The person? Michelle Carter, who encouraged a boy she was dating to take his life. Is she to blame? Let's ask Charles Manson about influencing people to do things. We also discuss the autopilot Tesla car that crashed, and WTAE news anchor, Wendy Bell who's tired of being discriminated against for saying things only blacks can get away with. I'm joined by Robin Higgins and Mikey Bolts this week. Robin's new book, "We Don't Think You're Racist" is out with a cameo by yours truly. What a hero.
