Wonder and awe of the beautiful is essential to the human experience. Our souls are often shaped and formed by the aesthetic experiences provided by the Creator. When we neglect this aspect of our lives, we fail to realize how God has created us uniquely to not only enjoy beauty, but to also create the beautiful. A distinctly Christian vision of these realities opens our eyes to see how God has enchanted our world to draw us toward Him, the source and substance of beauty, for a deeper experience of the Christian life. On this episode, Jared Wilson talks with pastor and author Matt Capps about his new book Drawn by Beauty and the place of awe and wonder in the Christian life. We even talk about Christian movies!
Pirates catcher Joey Bart joined the show. Joey mentioned his family members that have Pittsburgh ties. Joey talked about the activities he gets into during the offseason. He described the strategy of competition bass fishing and the events he has taken part in. Joey said Kevin VanDam is the best bass fisherman of all-time. Joey said there's nothing like being in a lake with 100 other boats. Joey talked about his journey to baseball when he expected to be a football player in high school. Joey told a story about catching for Matt Capps when he was 15. Who is the one pitcher from all-time that Joey wishes he could catch? Joey told the guys about meeting and working with Barry Bonds while he was part of the Giants organization. He said Bonds was on a level of hitter that he doesn't think we will ever see again. He thinks Bonds, even at 50+ years old, would be a threat at the plate in today's game.
Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk joined the show. Mike thinks Russell Wilson would be a mistake for the Steelers in 2025, leaving Justin Fields as the better choice. Mike doesn't think the Steelers have interest in Aaron Rodgers unless he's their last option. Mike doesn't buy into the dots being connected between Wilson and the Raiders. Mike described Russ' game as a one-club golf bag and said all he has is the moon-ball. Mike doesn't think Wilson is a player that will accept a backup job. Mike is surprised by DK Metcalf requesting a trade. Mike thinks DK could be had for a 3rd or 4th round pick. The guys asked Mike about what the Falcons are going to do with Kirk Cousins. How will the new deal for Saquon Barkley impact guys like Najee Harris as they enter the open market? Mike believes Davante Adams is the best WR of the available group. The guys asked Mike how the Maxx Crosby contract will affect what the Steelers offer TJ Watt later this offseason? Mike isn't sure what the strategy is for Myles Garrett and if he stays in Cleveland. How will the Bengals make all of their financials work with the young stars on offense? Pirates utilityman Jared Triolo joined the show. Jared won a gold glove last season and said that thing is heavy. Jared talked about how often he practices at the various positions on the field since he plays all over. The guys asked Jared about some of his early moments in the majors. Jared tried to build his all-defensive team. He said learning 1B is a lot more difficult than people think. ALL ACCESS w/ Aditi – Aditi gave her latest thoughts on the Steelers QB situation. She doesn't think there is a robust market for Russell Wilson. If Justin Fields isn't in Pittsburgh, she thinks there are ‘several' teams looking for his services. Aditi said it's hard to blame a player for testing the waters, especially if it's their first chance to really do so. Aditi does think there is a QB in the draft that she thinks the Steelers would take outside of the 1st round. The guys questioned the Jalen Milroe hand size that went up significantly since the Senior Bowl. Aditi loves Nick Chubb and thinks he's the antithesis of a few guys in the Steelers locker room. Aditi can see DK Metcalf going to Vegas. Pirates 2024 1st round pick Konnor Griffin joined the show. Konnor said he played 3 sports in high school – football and basketball along with baseball. Konnor said he had a love for all 3 sports, but baseball ultimately won out. What positions did Konnor play in football and hoops? Konnor comped himself to DK Metcalf as a football player. Konnor talked about what gets his body in game shape. Konnor said Henry Davis is often the first guy in the room every day. Konnor said Ronald Acuna, who is 27-years-old, is the player he watched the most growing up. Former Pirates pitcher, turned broadcaster Matt Capps joined the show. If this is their trade deadline approach, Poni said this organization is lost. What do some other MLB scribes think the Pirates will do in about a week? Do you want to see the Pirates go more all in or just add a bat? Pirates analyst Matt Capps joined the show. Hour 1 with Joe Starkey and Paul Zeise: Mitch Keller is throwing his fastball a mile per hour slower than the last two years. He allowed five runs (four earned) in the Pirates first loss of the season. How concerned should we be with Keller? He has an ERA of 5.11 in his last 23 starts. Matt Capps wants Mitch Keller to use his fastball more. It's one of his top pitches, but Keller only threw it 26% of the time last season with the cutter and sinker right behind. Happy Birthday Kenny Pickett. Mandatory minicamp starts tomorrow. What will it take for Pickett to start week one? The guys think it's a battle between Pickett and himself as the summer goes on. Mitch Trubisky is there, but with Pickett being labeled as “pro ready” during the draft process, he should be ready to roll as the season starts. The big deal made of his age, he's 24, will be exploited because he's considered “old” for a rookie QB. Former Pirates reliever Matt Capps joined the show. Matt talked about showering 4 times per day before he jumped into the baseball talk. Matt said Poni is “out of his mind” for suggesting the Pirates trade David Bednar. He said the team is listening and entertaining calls because that's what front offices do, but he doesn't believe the team will trade Bednar. Matt said Bednar has better stuff than he did, along with others like Joel Hanrahan and Evan Meek. He talked about the bulldog mentality that Bednar brings to the table.
