For almost thirty years, Susan Minard Lund's children believed she'd run away and abandoned them; after she disappeared on Christmas Eve of 1992 in Clarksville TN, a search was launched, but late the next year, her missing-persons report was closed. That's because a woman in Alabama claimed to be Sue, and authorities accepted the claim. Her siblings and parents never believed it, though, and they were proven right. Her story, and the story of Ina Jane Doe, are the throughline of Laurah Norton's book, LAY THEM TO REST, and Sue's family joins us to tell a piece of the story not covered in the book: what it's been like to deal with the aftermath of knowledge of what they learned—and what the rest of the justice they are waiting for.  Season 18 covers four unsolved homicides in four states and across three decades: all are in need of local and national attention to be resolved.    Laurah's book LAY THEM TO REST:  https://www.hachettebooks.com/titles/laurah-norton/lay-them-to-rest/9780306828805/   Sources at our website: https://www.thefalllinepodcast.com/sources Submit a case here   Join us on Patreon to fund therapy initiatives: https://www.patreon.com/thefalllinepodcast   We have partnered with AdvertiseCast to handle our advertising/sponsorship requests. "J'vais chercher l'pain !" Welcome! and Thank you for listening.  Today I have a guest, Dr. Matt Minard.  He is a physical therapist that specializes in running injury prevention and running mechanics.  There is a high incidence of runners that get injured.  Some would say that that is an excuse not to run.  However, the benefits of running markedly outweigh the risk of injury. In fact, runners have a less frequency of joint replacement than non-runners.  Running has been associated with a decreased risk of not only cardiovascular disease but cancer and cancer recurrence.  This is most likely from the anti-inflammatory benefits as well as the long-term reduction in sympathetic tone as seen in decrease blood pressure and heart rate.  The sense of well-being or perhaps runners high is associated with anti-depressant effects, and studies have shown that running can be a healthier alternative to medications.  The problem with running is that we tend to do too much too quick whether that is volume or speed.  The most common injuries come from early stress to the small tendons, bones and ligaments that support our weight.  The biggest fallacy is permanent knee injury.  Most knee injuries are again associated with ligaments and tendons and not destruction of the joint.  Most injuries arise from or are exacerbated by faulty mechanics.  A child runs perfect until we put clunky shoes on them.  Because we become more sedentary as we age, we are prone to more injuries when we suddenly take to running at a later age.  Enter Dr Matt Minard.  He will share with us today some ques for more efficient and safer running with the goal of extending our running longevity for many years to come.   He has a podcast for those who like to listen, but I would suggest his Instagram clips and YouTube videos for excellent training tips and demonstrations.  He also does private analysis of running form and coaching if you become interested.   I hope you enjoy the podcast.   https://youtu.be/7zEQSEnEcMo?si=ZugQQx-6rHBdNRNy Instagram: Learn.2.Run https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjRiZ3qje6CAxVJQzABHaibCVMQFnoECBAQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.l2rsmartersaferfaster.com%2F&usg=AOvVaw2BaRAli3JQQ74wrzIlVa9g&opi=89978449 doctordulaney.com Jami@doctordulaney.com https://www.amazon.com/Plant-based-Wellness-Cookbook-Generations-Cooking/dp/1733967702/ref=sr_1_3?crid=1U4J4U0SZUXUF&dchild=1&keywords=plant+based+wellness+cookbook&qid=1621083696&sprefix=plant+based+well%2Caps%2C173&sr=8-3

Over 200 women sculptors have been uncovered in the research of Sophie Johnson from Bristol University. She describes some of their creations and discusses the challenges of working with the incomplete personal archives of these artists – including Mrs Goldsmith, Patience Wright, and Catherine Andras, who created wax portrait miniatures and effigies, and Anne Seymour Damer, who carved in marble. Kathleen Collins died in her 40s and left un-filmed screenplays and unpublished stories which Alix Beeston from Cardiff University has been researching. Collins' finished film Losing Ground didn't get a theatrical release when it was made in 1982 but it was restored and reissued in 2015. Now her work is finding a new audience. But how should we approach her unfinished works? Joan Passey hosts the conversation. Producer in Cardiff: Fay Lomas Dr Joan Passey teaches English at Bristol University and is a New Generation Thinker working with the BBC and the Arts and Humanities Research Council to share research on radio. Sophie Johnson is a PhD candidate at the University of Bristol researching eighteenth century European women sculptors. Her research focuses on women wax modellers and their entrepreneurship. Links to her articles are available at https://research-information.bris.ac.uk/en/persons/sophie-johnson Dr Alix Beeston is a feminist writer and academic based at Cardiff University. Her most recent book is Incomplete: The Feminist Possibilities of the Unfinished Film. More details of her work are available at https://alixbeeston.com/ With special thanks to Michael Minard, who provided the song ‘It Might Be' – written by Minard and Kathleen Collins, performed by Jenny Burton, intended for use in an unfinished film project by Collins – which we hear in the podcast.

By facilitating conversations with young people like the one I did on the Podcast with 19-year-old Minard, a college student from Philly, will we get the youths more involved in local government and politics. I asked Minard: are you aware that there is a Mayora's Race coming up in Philly and who the candidates are? No not really, just from the ads I see on TV or on YouTube. I know that one guy is running, but no I am not really involved. That's according to a young college student I spoke with today about youth involvement in Politics and local government. This is the first in a series of podcast episodes we will do up to May 16th about Philly's Mayor's race and popular opinion among the various demographics and generations. Runners have been told that heel striking is bad.  Or at least, it's not nearly as good as a runner who hits the ground on the midfoot. But what if that advice is completely wrong?  What if heel striking is actually superior and can help you run faster? On today's episode, I'll be talking to Dr Matt Minard about why he thinks most runners will actually run faster when they heel strike.  You'll learn: why the way we walk has a lot to teach us about how we run, about the part of your running form that's way more important than where you land, and how a simple trick, using something you probably have lying around the house, can give you the feedback you need to learn how to improve your running today. Matt is a doctor of physical therapy and runs the company,  Human Movement Optimization, which encompasses his Learn 2 Run brand and continuing education courses.  With a passion for human movement and fitness, he is driven to help others learn how to move their bodies strategically and efficiently to reduce the risk of injury and increase longevity. I think you'll find his passion for helping runners like you is clear in this conversation.  And of course, you'll also want to be sure to stay tuned all the way to the end of the episode where I'll share another Mental Strength Minute to fortify your mind in 60 seconds or less. Cryotherapy has been shown to improve mood, reduce anxiety, and reduce inflammation. It can reduce pain and blood flow to jump start the recovery process. Cold plunges are great for when you need extra recovery, like if you accidentally ran a lot longer or faster than planned.  But the real reason I love a good cold plunge is because of the profound mental benefits. It's been shown to reduce depression and anxiety, improve mood and brain function, and even 5 minutes gives you a great shot of dopamine afterward. If you can sit in an ice bath up to your shoulders, you won't have any mental issues with racing a negative split and finishing strong!
