We went to QuakeCon 2019 this past weekend to celebrate Doom's 25th anniversary! We got to see some new details on Doom, actually play Doom Eternal and participate in BYOC! QuakeCon was great and it was nice to see all the community out there to hang out with us. This week in the news, Nintendo is fixing their joy-cons, Overwatch has a new hero, Disney talks on acquiring Activision Blizzard and Star Wars The Fallen Order is like Sekiro. Oh and some valets in GTA Online get their butts kicked, caught on fire, ran over, tortured and more. People aren't nice to these NPC's... In the discussion, we go over a video surfaced by YongYea and a few other YouTuber's about a keynote given 3 years ago at a Helsinki conference. They talk about "Going Whaling" and using what we consider malicious tactics in getting players to spend more and more money using their weaknesses. We take a trip back to Kanto with Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu. This is a new Pokemon RPG game and the first full game for the Switch with Pokemon (aside from Pokken). In this game, it's mostly a remake of the original Red, Blue and Yellow but in full 3D. It's a bit toned down from the originals and not as challenging, but still immensely fun as Brett explains in his impressions. Austin also dives deep into the dungeon with Enter the Gungeon. On sale on the Switch, he talks about how much fun he's having with this game on the Switch and why everyone should pick it up for such a good price. In our news, Remedy's former CEO starts a new studio focused on “underserved” markets and celebrities are frustrated with Fortnite for selling emotes about their dances or moves from tv shows or rap videos. We also revisit women in Battlefield V and share our opinion on how we may agree with them not being in the game but for a much different reason than historical accuracy. Instead, we're talking about the violent treatment to not just men, but women since you can play as both genders in these war zones. Finally, our discussion explores some topics brought up in a great discussion between games journalist Jason Schreier and Youtube Influencer YongYea. The pièce de résistance is Tom’s unfathomably genius ideas on how to solve the obesity crisis gripping the Western world. This week’s homework was of course Predator – one alien’s hunting weekend goes horribly wrong with hilarious and rather gooey consequences. With more sweaty muscles and evisceration than you can shake a well sharpened spear at, the guys sound off on their favourite bits, the silly jokes, the lore of the Predator, the undercurrent themes of machismo and prehistoric man’s history as a hunter-gatherer – it’s all here. Wrapped up in a neat wee Christmas bow, it’s the end of Season 1. We could only quietly hope in the deep dark recesses of our creepy little hearts that we’d stick the first year and it’s all because you, yes you, listen. So thanks for that. And sorry.
