Can Star Trek live on aesthetics alone? Brady says no, Ryan says... maybe? Kind of? in this iffy but striking outing of the Original Series' infamous third season. Come for the comparisons to David Lynch, and stay for the boys' reminiscing on puppet-based children's entertainment (the creator of Lamb Chop wrote this episode!).

This week's theme? Frustrating world-building.Mystery of a Thousand Moons feels like a latter day George Lucas episode: a follow-up ep shoehorning in unrelated thematics that never gel. It also features a young boy. Filoni and co. seemingly grit their teeth during the Filoni Zoni for the BTS, so you know we talk about it.For Lights of Zetar, we talk about the gaslighting of our protagonist in the ep. Which is funny, because the episode is literally about empowerment. And Kenny meets his new favorite character.__________________________________Get early, extended episodes on our Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/trekwarspodWatch us! https://www.youtube.com/@trekwarspodTheme by Tosin AwofesoSocial Media:https://www.instagram.com/trekwarspodhttps://bsky.app/profile/trekwarspod.bsky.socialWant to ask us questions? While en route to the Federation's galactic research station on Memory Alpha, the Enterprise encounters a mysterious space anomaly that impacts each of the crew members in different ways -- especially Lt. Mira Romaine, who passes out from the experience. That's of particular concern to Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott, who has fallen head over heels in love with her. Turns out these lights are the last remaining survivors of an ancient race, and they have chosen Lt. Romaine's body to live out the rest of their lives. After the one-two punch of weaker episodes like "Whom Gods Destroy" and (especially) "The Mark of Gideon," "The Lights of Zetar" represents something of a return to form for "Star Trek," at least by late 3rd season standards. The pacing is relatively brisk, and the impressive visual effects still hold up after more than 5 decades. "The Lights of Zetar" still suffers from lapses in logic, and Scotty once again loses all sense of control by thinking with his heart instead of his head, but it still qualifies as an entertaining-enough episode of "Star Trek." In this episode of Trekking Through Compliance, we consider the episode The Lights of Zetar, which aired on January 31, 1969, and occurred on Star Date 5725.3. On its way to the Memory Alpha planetoid, the storehouse of all Federation's cultural history and scientific knowledge, sensors detect a strange storm. The storm travels at a speed of Warp 2.6, indicating that it cannot be a natural phenomenon. The storm heads right for the Enterprise, penetrating the shield and attacking different brain centers of different crew members. Lt. Mira Romaine, aboard to oversee transmission of data newly gathered by the Enterprise to Memory Alpha, seems the hardest hit. The storm then heads for shieldless Memory Alpha, killing all those aboard and burning out the central memory core. Mira beamed and warned everyone to return to the Enterprise because the storm was returning. Scans from the Enterprise confirm this, and the landing party returns to the ship. To rid Mira of the alien influence before the aliens attack again, Kirk rushes her to a gravity/pressure chamber. The aliens attack too soon, however, and Mira becomes completely possessed. Speaking through Mira, the aliens identify themselves as the last survivors of the planet Zetar. They have had to discard their bodies and have been searching for a millennium for one such as Mira's in which they can live out their lives. Before Mira's consciousness can be completely subjugated, Scotty puts her in the pressure chamber. Here, the aliens are killed, and Mira is freed. The Lights of Zetar was the eighteenth episode of Star Trek's third season to air, with the last remnants of a destroyed civilisation causing difficulties for the Enterprise. In this episode Gerry and Iain discuss whether Scotty's behaviour ought to raise more concerns. On the way to the Federation's primary information hub at Memory Alpha, the Enterprise encounters an unusual entity characterised by it's coloured lights. After Lt. Mira Romaine (Jan Shutan) is strongly affected, Kirk tries to investigate but makes little progress thanks to Scotty's interference. It becomes apparent that Romaine's mind is being hijacked by the lifeforms from the light entity and McCoy must implement a radical solution to save her. Later, Kirk and McCoy impress upon Spock the value of Scotty's attention to Romaine's survival. The Lights of Zetar was directed by Herb Kenwith, his only work for the show. The story was by Shari Lewis, with an assist to Jeremy Tarcher. In this episode Gerry and Iain considered agency and its importance. The discussion continues in the comments below and please keep in touch with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram where we're @trekpodcast. You can listen to the show here on the website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Pocket Casts, TuneIn, Stitcher, Google or wherever you find your podcasts. The Lights of Zetar was released in 1969. It is 50 minutes long and originally aired on the NBC network. It can be viewed on Paramount+ in the United states, Netflix in the UK and is available on DVD and Blu Ray in other countries, including a comprehensive remastered set of all three seasons released by Paramount Home Entertainment.

Tread Perilously's annual Star Trek month begins with a look at the Original Series episode "The Lights of Zetar." Love blooms on the Enterprise as Scotty finds himself a lass. But will her sensitivity to a phenomenon the ship encounters while en route to Memory Alpha end his rare moment of romance? Also, will Captain Kirk abide not being the center of attention this week? And while we're asking questions, will Lt. Mira Romaine -- Scotty's girlfriend -- get manhandled once she exhibits signs of "space sickness?" Meanwhile, the space phenomenon shows signs of sentience, but its motives are unclear as its speech tends to sound like a mouth full of Pop Rocks. Erik and Justin immediately talk about former Doctor Who Peter Davison. They also debate the merits of Star Trek: Discovery. The Southern California air threatens to strangle them both. A mention of episode co-writer Shari Lewis leads to the nearly forgotten Nickelodeon program Turkey Television; but, somehow, not to Lewis's most famous creation, Lambchop. Captain Kirk turns into a romance writer. Scotty and Kirk's patriarchal attitudes are criticized. Erik decries the need for strict series-to-series continuity. John Harrison gets a namecheck and Justin announces he will write a script requested by Patreon subscribers.

Everyone is trying to get some on this week's SSHB. First up, both Mister Scott and a colony of disembodied alien spirits have eyes only for Lieutenant Romaine in "The Lights of Zetar." And then Kirk and an immortal battle it out for the love of a robot (while another robot looks on forlorn from the sidelines)in "Requiem for Methuselah." Also this week: alienating any British listeners, alienating fans of "The Man from Earth" (which, by the way, we spoil the CRAP out of, so maybe turn off after "Zetar" since the discussion is during "Methuselah"), and alienating fans of Keiko O'Brien. CONTENT WARNING: Spock delves into some ethically-horrifying mind-melding this week, which leads to a brief discussion of some of his non-consensual actions in the series. synopses: 0:56; The Lights of Zetar: 7:45; Requiem for Methuselah: 30:48; announcement of a fun thing: 1:02:11

You probably already know that it’s not a good idea to stare into a bright light. When there are many lights—and they’re multi-colored—doing so becomes an even worse idea. You could damage your eyesight, or perhaps have you brainwave replaced by that of a group of alien minds searching for a body to call home. That’s what happened to Lt. Mira Romaine in “The Lights of Zetar,” the third-season TOS episode that plays with character personalities, limited financial resources, and has a connection to a beloved children’s show. In this episode of The Ready Room, we’re joined by Larry Nemecek and Brandon-Shea Mutala to discuss Memory Alpha, Scotty in love, how you can blame anything on space, and why horses might not make the best engineers. We also delve into some Season Three trivia, production shortcuts, and remastered TOS elements. In our news segment, Chris and Larry discuss whether the ascension of Les Moonves to Chair of CBS Corp. will have an impact on Star Trek, when we’ll hear first details about the Star Trek 2017 series, and the future of Star Trek on streaming services not called CBS All Access. Creating The Standard Orbit Canon: Season Three. The time has come to confront the toughest choices ever made on a podcast: which episodes of The Original Series' third season are worthy of being included in our canon? In this episode of Standard Orbit, Mike and Drew put each episode of Season Three on the scales to see how many weigh enough to make the cut to create the "Standard Orbit Canon". A surprising amount of episodes stand our test of continuity, play an important role in the future of Star Trek, and eventually lead to the finale of The Original Series, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. After we take or leave Season Three, we talk about the recently announced director of Star Trek 13, Justin Lin. We discuss the titling of his previous movies and what we think of what we've seen of his work. Horror on Enterprise. Star Trek has a great tradition of taking classic elements of horror and putting a spine-tingling, futuristic twist on them. The Original Series did this especially well, whether riffing on vampires in “The Man Trap,” possession in “The Lights of Zetar,” or even Jack the Ripper in “Wolf In the Fold.” As a prequel to TOS, Enterprise frequently dipped into horror as well—no doubt thanks to a fondness for the genre in series creator Brannon Braga. In this episode of Warp Five hosts Christopher Jones and Kate Walsh discuss seven specific episodes of Enterprise that take classic elements of horror and put our crew through the frightening realities of exploring deep space.
