9-42 is the podcast from the team behind The Guitar Show, the UK's biggest annual guitar event. I'm Jason, and when I am not co-hosting this podcast I am trying to organise the next Guitar Show. The other co-host is Ant, we've known each other for years and he's the fella that pressured me in to doing this. Each episode we will endeavour to bring you the stories behind the gear, to talk to the artists, the influencers and the manufacturers that keep us playing and loving the guitar. The one where we chatted with the bass player from Thunder. As Chris says himself there is very little he hasn't done in his time as a professional musician. Known to many because of his work in the aforementioned UK Rockers, he has had a varied career covering a number of musical genres, in a eclectic mix of locations. And you know what, it makes for an entertaining chat. So if you want to know how to get from Chelmsford to Halesowen, via Welsh television, Then Jericho and an Eagles Tribute Band you are in the right place.Chris FacebookThis podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
The one where we talked all things acoustic with Rosie Heydenrych.A passion for music, and an outlet for self-expression, is what brings a lot of people to the guitar, particularly in your late teens. In that respect what drew Rosie to the acoustic is not especially ground-breaking or unique. What is somewhat unique though is the determination and drive to channel that passion into building some really fine instruments, that look and sound great. And that is exactly what Rosie has done with her brand, Turnstone Guitars. We get the full story behind that journey, from her first guitar and her early musical influences, to the hard hours necessary to master the art of acoustic guitar building before you can even begin to turn your vision into reality.Turnstone Guitars Website9-42 is the podcast from the team behind The Guitar Show UK, an annual event held in Birmingham and loved by guitarists young & old. The one where we had to change our plans a bit.Think of this as a bit of a festive bonus, like a little twinkly adornment for your tree, or an extra satsuma in your stocking. So if you need a brief respite from the Christmas Day shenanigans, here is 25 minutes of 9-42 blather wrapped a few little updates and need-to-knows.There is very little extra to add, other than to wish you a groovy Christmas and a hard-rocking New Year.9-42 will be back in January. The Guitar Show Website9-42 is the podcast from the team behind The Guitar Show UK, an annual event held in Birmingham and loved by guitarists young & old. The one where Jared cut a lot of long stories short. To call Jared a 'guitarist in the blues-rock tradition' would technically be fairly accurate, but also would do him a bit of a dis-service, there is a lot going on with both him and his music that pushes back against that kind of labelling. Indeed you don't need to spend any more than 49 minutes with him to get how consumed he is by both music, and the guitar. His passion is as honest, as it is infectious - as you will hear as he talks us through the voyage of discovery that brought him to the guitars he cherishes, his work with Gibson and his own signature Epiphone. This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
The one where Ant surprised everybody with his knowledge of Ableton...According to Bass Guitar magazine Steve is 'Britains most innovative bass guitarist'. According to Steve he is a Bassist, Journalist and Academic. According to us he is a very fascinating, very passionate, very lovely bloke.Over the course of the episode we (of course) delve into Steves career, but mainly through the prism of trying to establish what the hell it means to be a 'Solo Bass Player' and more importantly how do you turn it into a career. This brings us in turn to his early session and touring work, how he began writing and his fascination with innovation that has knitted these pieces together. We also grapple with the slightly surreal notion of his recently diagnosed cancer being a positive career move.Steve WebsiteSteve Bandcamp9-42 is the podcast from the team behind The Guitar Show UK, an annual event held in Birmingham and loved by guitarists young & old. The one where we scatted about all over the place with Doug Kauer.Even though we chatted for well over an hour, it will take you no more than a few moments to realise that Doug is a real character. Firstly up is the fact that he bounds into the conversation with all the energy of Tigger, and all the breathless delivery of Jim Carrey. And secondly is that infectiousness of a man who doesn't take what he does too seriously, whilst absolutely taking what he does really, really seriously...But we digress. Lets start at the beginning with his early life building furniture in his fathers workshop and his deep love of all kinds of guitar music. And when with chatted about that, then we can move onto The Simpsons.(oh and just a little heads up, we ended up having to use the Zoom recorded audio for this episode so apologies if it doesn't sound quite as clear as usual.)Kauer Guitars WebsiteKauer Guitars Instagram9-42 is the podcast from the team behind The Guitar Show UK, an annual event held in Birmingham and loved by guitarists young & old. The one where we learnt a load about buying & selling Vintage guitars.I think it's fair to say we would all like to be making a living in the same way that Mike Long does. Mike formed ATB Guitars in 1998 and since then he has been half way around the world on the trail of the kind of guitars most of us can only dream of. To date nearly 5000 instruments have passed through his hands, and he has dealt with a great dollop of Rock Royalty along the way.We had a fascinating chat, and as well as a few little tips about where you might go for a 'vintage bargain' he also explained how he he gained his first bit of notoriety in the early days of eBay.ATB WebsiteThe 1960 Burst Story9-42 is the podcast from the team behind The Guitar Show UK, an annual event held in Birmingham and loved by guitarists young & old. The one where CEO Ken Haas tries to overcome his natural shyness. Even though they are celebrating their 25th birthday this year, Reverend Guitars May still be a new one on you. Born in Detroit and raised in Toledo the brand boasts a collection of unique designs and innovative features, and numbers Billy Corgan, Reeves Gabrels and Greg Koch amongst their signatories. The one where Jason has a crack at doing the Intro (and he makes a reasonable job of it...) Before we even getting going, man has CJ done some stuff. The conversation about his career rips along at a fair old pace as there is literally so much to cram in. CJ is probably best known as being one of the founding members of the Wildhearts, which he formed with Ginger in 1989, but we begin the story with his stint as Guitarist in Tattooed Love Boys. As the conversation weaves around CJ's career there is plenty of time to talk about his (very) limited guitar collection and his relationship with hot sauce. https://en-gb.facebook.com/CJWildheart/ (CJ Facebook) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
The one where Guy kicked off a whole new season. You might have been wondering why you hadn't been getting your regular fix of 9-42, well the truth is we had a little break over the summer which gave us time to recharge, regroup and plan a whole new second season. And what a way to start, with guitarist and singer Guy Griffin. Guy is well known as a long term member of The Quireboys, as well as playing with Joe Elliott in the Down 'N' Outz and his own band Glimmer. As with a lot of out conversations it covers a lot of ground, and takes us into some uncharted territory including how to decide what football team to follow when you live in Bedford. http://quireboys.com (The Quireboys Website) https://www.instagram.com/griff69pix/?hl=en (Guy Instagram) 9-42 is the podcast from the team behind The Guitar Show UK, an annual event held in Birmingham and loved by guitarists young & old. The one where we finally got around to chatting about the music. From the age of five Sophie knew that the guitar would play some part in her life. During her teens she established herself both on stage and in the studio, as well as a renowned guitar teacher. Just prior to the pandemic she shifted her focus to the online world, amassing a huge following across Youtube, Facebook and TikTok. The one where we talk chord positions & voicing. If you have been to The Guitar Show over the last couple of years you will probably have seen Billy play, And if you have you will have been blown away, not just with the incredible ability but the richness and musicality of the arrangements of the songs he performs. In 2016, he reached the grand final of ‘Guitar Star' – a guitar based talent show open to all ages and genres for Sky Arts TV, which was broadcast in Europe, Australia and South America. We had a really lovely natter about his inspirations, how he goes about writing and arranging, and how he is shaping his guitar journey both personally and professionally (which includes a signature model at the age of 21). https://billywatman.com (Billy Website) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYeZhUzmHqI (Billy - Another Brick in the Wall Video) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
The one where Ant grabbed Danish Pete just as he got off stage. Pete Honoré probably didn't realise to what extent his life would change when he accepted a job with Andertons in 2015. As a well regarded touring musician he has played with the likes of Tom Jones, Paloma Faith & Girls Aloud and never really expected to end up as Youtube personality & influencer. The one where (amongst other things) we chatted about what it was like having an ex-Police Man as your boss. Rufus was in Paris when we spoke, just finishing rehearsals for a six month stint on the road with Sting, his first major road-trip since lockdown. The one where we both got a bit over-excited about Tom's house. The main reason we wanted to get Tom onto 9-42 was to talk about his new EP, finally recorded and finished during lockdown, and due out this week. And we did indeed talk about that quite a bit, but even before that point, it got a little out of hand. The one that got all eighties-tastic. Well this was a blast. When he isn't messing about with Metal Detectors (and playing in far too many bands to keep track of) Rich will normally be creating content for his Youtube channel 'Session Heroes'. Rich has been fascinated with this community of behind-the-scenes guitar virtuosos for quite a while, and has been producing content on the subject for about five years. This if course is perfect for Ant & Jason as it allows them to bang on about the eighties and look over the discographies of players such as Michael Landau, Dan Huff & Steve Lukather. https://www.youtube.com/c/RichardWatson/videos?view=0&sort=da&flow=grid (Session Heroes - Youtube) https://www.richardwatsonmusic.com (Rich - Website) 9-42 is the podcast from the team behind The Guitar Show UK, an annual event held in Birmingham and loved by guitarists young & old. The one where Jason had a very intellectual chat with the guitarist from Sleeper. Jon completed his PhD in 2018, and over the last few years has been working on expanding his thesis into a book. The result is Dylan, Lennon, Marx & God which was published late in 2021. In this extended chat Jon talks Jason through his academic journey, how it has been influenced by both his childhood years in Sheffield and then by his university life in Manchester in the last eighties. Along the way they touch on living in LA, working with KD Lang & Mel C, and of course his work with Sleeper. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dylan-Lennon-Marx-God-Stewart/dp/1108489818/ref=sr_1_3?adgrpid=52787847305&gclid=CjwKCAiA9aKQBhBREiwAyGP5lSeCDj9x9pmkcYwKymZHwoXMoVmyjiWW6igzzM2RyFaUHH4lACaHphoCMJAQAvD_BwE&hvadid=259063257989&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=1006815&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=3361768340196699540&hvtargid=kwd-303949058348&hydadcr=24402_1748874&keywords=jon+stewart+book&qid=1644772942&sr=8-3 (Dylan, Lennon, Marx & God) https://sleeperband-merchandise.myshopify.com (Sleeper Website) https://twitter.com/jonsleeper1?lang=en (Jon Twitter) 9-42 is the podcast from the team behind The Guitar Show UK, an annual event held in Birmingham and loved by guitarists young & old. The one where stayed up late whilst Frank sorted his internet connection. Frank Bello has been the Bassist with Anthrax since the early days, joining just after the release of the bands first album. Other than a short stint with band Helmet, he has been an ever present with Anthrax contributing extensively as a songwriter. We had a very open and honest chat with Frank, and he spoke with great candour about some of the difficult experiences he has worked his way through. But at the same time it's an uplifting conversation that is full of warmth and humour. Oh, and you might pick up on the fact that he has a book out... The one where we literally couldn't get a word in with Rhino. Well it had a fairly unorthodox start, a whirlwind middle and an update on Brentford FC at the end. As you would expect we jumped at the opportunity to spend some time with the bass player of Status Quo, but I don't think either of us expected it to be quite as full-on as it turned out. Rhino is an absolute legend of a musician, and a total sweetheart of a human being you scarcely pauses for breath as he bombards you with story after story, and anecdote after anecdote. We talk about his experiences of the pandemic, his solo project Rhino's Revenge, his time with Dexy's Midnight Runners and of course his thirty plus year stint with national treasures Status Quo. Pauls talks us through his back story, including his early career as a session player, learning from one of the masters (Ray Davies), life on the road and what the future holds as he embarks on a tour with James Blunt. https://thetemperancemovement.com (The Temperance Movement) https://twitter.com/paulsayerguitar (Paul Twitter) https://www.instagram.com/theguitarshowuk/ (9-42 Instagram) https://twitter.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Twitter) https://www.facebook.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Facebook) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCozetpXDzhNSAELq6wnoLhQ (9-42 Youtube) https://www.theguitarshow.co.uk/ (9-42 Website) https://www.facebook.com/ashortstoriespodcast/ (ashortstories Facebook) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
The one where we learned about the various basements of Patrick Eggle. If you had any interest in guitars through the 1990's then you will be aware of the impact that Patrick Eggle guitars had, when models such as the Berlin and the New York were launched. Players such as Rory Gallagher, Tony Iommi, Brian May and Midge Ure were early devotees and the brand amassed both commercial and critical success. Pat takes us through his fascinating back story including the dramatic rise in the nineties, turning his back on the original incarnation of the business and relocating in the U.S. He brings the story up-to-date with his move back to Oswestry, working with Faith Acoustics and helping to relaunch the Shergold Brand. We ever get a bit of an exclusive about a new prototype. http://www.eggle.co.uk (Patrick James Eggle Guitars) https://www.faithguitars.com (Faith Guitars) https://www.shergoldguitars.com (Shergold Guitars) https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5JrflBAfeHV3SdvI39Pnkb?si=9djS7H8NQq-3MIfH9f8Z0w (Episode 24 Playlist) https://www.instagram.com/theguitarshowuk/ (9-42 Instagram) https://twitter.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Twitter) https://www.facebook.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Facebook) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCozetpXDzhNSAELq6wnoLhQ (9-42 Youtube) https://www.theguitarshow.co.uk/ (9-42 Website) https://www.facebook.com/ashortstoriespodcast/ (ashortstories Facebook) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
The one where chatted with Hannah, but failed to offer her a brew or a toasted teacake. Talk about packing a lot into the last decade or so. Hannah started her journey as a singer-songwriter trying to build an audience through busking in the centre of her hometown of Leeds. This is where we pick up the story and then follow it through early attempts at content creation, going viral and working out how to make a career in music industry work on your terms. It's a cracking tale, and one that continues to go from strength to strength. And it proves that just because you have a degree in Biology you don't necessarily have to use it. https://www.hannahtrigwell.com (Hannah Website) https://www.instagram.com/theguitarshowuk/ (9-42 Instagram) https://twitter.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Twitter) https://www.facebook.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Facebook) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCozetpXDzhNSAELq6wnoLhQ (9-42 Youtube) https://www.theguitarshow.co.uk/ (9-42 Website) https://www.facebook.com/ashortstoriespodcast/ (ashortstories Facebook) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
The one where Ant & Alister banged on about Marillion. Actually not just Marillion, they got quite excited about Richard Hawley as well. Despite his youthful Clooney-esque (his description) good looks, Alister has been building guitars for well over 25 years. Known mostly for acoustic instruments he pioneered models with aged finishes and has built guitars for a who's who of artists including the aforementioned Mr Hawley, Paul McCartney, Graham Coxon & Chris Difford. We chatted about all the above, as well as his collaboration with the Buddy Holly Foundation and his ring binder full of cease & desist notices. P.S before all the RH fans pile in the song that Alister was referring too is of course called Remorse Code not White Lines - apologies for the confusion - but to be fair that line is repeated as the refrain in the chorus! https://atkinguitars.com (Atkin Guitars Website) https://www.instagram.com/theguitarshowuk/ (9-42 Instagram) https://twitter.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Twitter) https://www.facebook.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Facebook) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCozetpXDzhNSAELq6wnoLhQ (9-42 Youtube) https://www.theguitarshow.co.uk/ (9-42 Website) https://www.facebook.com/ashortstoriespodcast/ (ashortstories Facebook) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
The one where Jason took one for the team and headed to Wales to record a 9-42 face to face. Rob Williams is guitar repairer & luthier who like to do everything by hand. From an early age he became fascinated with dismantling all manner of stuff to understand how things are designed, and more importantly how they can be improved. Rob explains how this fascination translated to guitars and the unique insight he got from his formative years with the likes of Jaydee Custom, Musical Exchanges & Patrick Eggle. https://robwilliamsguitars.co.uk (Rob Website) https://www.instagram.com/theguitarshowuk/ (9-42 Instagram) https://twitter.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Twitter) https://www.facebook.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Facebook) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCozetpXDzhNSAELq6wnoLhQ (9-42 Youtube) https://www.theguitarshow.co.uk/ (9-42 Website) https://www.facebook.com/ashortstoriespodcast/ (ashortstories Facebook) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
You might recall we chatted to Bernard back at the beginning of August, but we weren't able to bring you the whole conversation due to fact that he talked about an upcoming event that turned out to be under a press embargo. Well, Bernard has been back in touch to let us know we are now good to publish the entire conversation, and as such we decided to get it to you as soon as possible. The first part of the episode is exactly the same as the one that we put out in August, and whilst we would suggest listening again to get back up to speed , if you want to forward to the new stuff you will find it at approximately 31 minutes into the natter. Enjoy. https://www.bernardbutler.com/news (Bernard Butler News) https://www.instagram.com/theguitarshowuk/ (9-42 Instagram) https://twitter.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Twitter) https://www.facebook.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Facebook) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCozetpXDzhNSAELq6wnoLhQ (9-42 Youtube) https://www.theguitarshow.co.uk/ (9-42 Website) https://www.facebook.com/ashortstoriespodcast/ (ashortstories Facebook) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
The one where we hooked up with the Head Tabby himself. There was a lot to pack into Episode 43 as the back story to Feline Guitars is quite an epic, fortunately, Jonathan (who runs Feline) is a seasoned pro and he took us through the journey with the kind of assuredness you want from somebody who is about to administer a fret dress to your pride and joy. The story takes in YOP schemes, furniture building courses and Shadow Guitars (remember them) before we get down to a bit of guitar porn. It's what we do. The one where we get an insight into the back-story of one of the oldest Musical Instrument brands in the UK. Rotosound was founded in the late fifties by James How, in this episode we talk to his son (and current Chairman) Jason How about the slightly unusual journey that led his dad to start making strings, and in turn to John Entwistle of the Who knocking on the factory door. It's a fascinating story, and one we bring bang up to date by discussing Covid, Brexit and how Rotosound are striving to produce as ethically and sustainably as possible. https://www.rotosound.com (Rotosound Website) https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4NQyvcBXJSyeYbl4H62fGg (Episode 41 Playlist) https://www.instagram.com/theguitarshowuk/ (9-42 Instagram) https://twitter.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Twitter) https://www.facebook.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Facebook) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCozetpXDzhNSAELq6wnoLhQ (9-42 Youtube) https://www.theguitarshow.co.uk/ (9-42 Website) https://www.facebook.com/ashortstoriespodcast/ (ashortstories Facebook) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
The one where we talked sci-fi with Matt Oram of Fidelity Guitars. You may not have heard of Fidelity Guitars, and you can be forgiven for that because they haven't been around for all that long. But they are some of the most individual, & breath-taking designs we have ever seen. So it was great when Matt agreed to come on the podcast and take us through the story so far. And of course, as the conversation progressed all the pieces started falling into place including the inspiration behind the designs and care and attention that went into building such an insta-friendly brand. https://www.fidelity-guitars.co.uk (Fidelity Guitars Website) Episode 41 Playlist https://www.instagram.com/theguitarshowuk/ (9-42 Instagram) https://twitter.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Twitter) https://www.facebook.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Facebook) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCozetpXDzhNSAELq6wnoLhQ (9-42 Youtube) https://www.theguitarshow.co.uk/ (9-42 Website) https://www.facebook.com/ashortstoriespodcast/ (ashortstories Facebook) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
The one where we talked football and music with Bernard Butler. Bernard is a musician, songwriter and record producer. He came to prominence as the guitarist & co-writer of the mercury award-winning band Suede. He left Suede in 1994, working with David McAlmont before releasing the critically acclaimed solo album People Move On. Since then he has worked on a plethora of projects & collaborations including Duffy, The Libertines and Paloma Faith. To be honest, we barely scratched the surface of the things we wanted to ask about, but as you will hear there is more to look forward to a bit further down the track. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/54236WTkO1OxwzRQkXGnGi (Episode 40 playlist) https://bernardbutler.com/home (Bernard Website) https://open.spotify.com/album/2BOlaNQt6WJ1HO5pQcKHGh?si=VnM6L0q7T_ul-zoNUK4C5A&dl_branch=1 (The Wallflowers - Bringing Down The Horse) https://open.spotify.com/album/1RkTr9GuvfSC0syx8EUEHv?si=qMDmJPwxTz-_WkexbLn_nw&dl_branch=1 (Jude Cole - Start The Car) https://www.instagram.com/theguitarshowuk/ (9-42 Instagram) https://twitter.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Twitter) https://www.facebook.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Facebook) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCozetpXDzhNSAELq6wnoLhQ (9-42 Youtube) https://www.theguitarshow.co.uk/ (9-42 Website) https://www.facebook.com/ashortstoriespodcast/ (ashortstories Facebook) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
The one where Chris dropped in and helped us out of a jam. It would be easy to be a little bit envious of Chris. Possibly because his youthful looks means he regularly gets ID-checked even though he has just turned thirty, but mainly because (like many of us) he decided at an early age that he just wanted to be a musician and then he only went and bloody did it. We talked about his YouTube channel, being managed by the chap that broke Guns'n'Roses and being voted Best Blues Player by the readers of Guitarist Magazine. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRcsFKc_8Sjz1chAwC9jWRw (Chris Youtube) https://www.chrisbuckguitar.co.uk (Chris Website) https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1pDECxzMIJC4qxjt87ZgAh (Episode 39 Playlist) https://www.instagram.com/theguitarshowuk/ (9-42 Instagram) https://twitter.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Twitter) https://www.facebook.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Facebook) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCozetpXDzhNSAELq6wnoLhQ (9-42 Youtube) https://www.theguitarshow.co.uk/ (9-42 Website) https://www.facebook.com/ashortstoriespodcast/ (ashortstories Facebook) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
The one where we tried to keep up with Kyle Gass. And in all honesty, I don't think we managed it. You may not be familiar with Kyle, but you will have heard of one of his projects, the mighty power-duo Tenacious D that he fronts with creative partner Jack Black. Kyle is a bit of an enigma, he is an accomplished actor, comic and musician and has been involved in numerous projects so when we got the chance to welcome him to the podcast we jumped at it. It certainly isn't a normal episode of 9-42, and you may have to listen hard to keep up. In our defence, we tried to ask him a few questions, but fairly quickly we gave up and just went along for the ride. P.S Although he didn't mention it at the time of recording, the new 'D' video dropped on the 1st July and it's as bonkers & brilliant as we could have hoped for. The link is below. The one where Jason nattered to Chris, whilst Ant went out for Tapas. Of course that hadn't been the plan, but what with one thing (Ants birthdays having been during lockdown) and another (Chris leaving his mobile upstairs) it was left to Jason to pose the questions. And what an entertaining & informative chat it turned out to be. So settle down we a family size bag of potato-based snacks and let Chris tell you about his new album, blagging his way on tour with Ugly Kid Joe, buying the perfect 335 in lockdown and the two bands he will probably never leave, The Sisters of Mercy & Eureka Machines. The one where we chatted to Ginger, his manager Jane & his dog Maggie. Ginger is a guitarist, singer and songwriter and boy has he packed a lot into his musical career. He is perhaps best known for his work with The Wildhearts, but he has been involved in a plethora of other projects and is prodigious in musical output. The one where we chatted to Neil Ivison, because Neil is Ivison Guitars. It starts with Status Quo, and that is about as good a place to start as any. Neil guides us through his early career as a Guitar Tech, a journey that took him from one end of the rock'n'roll hierarchy to the other. The one where we talk about hand-crafted guitars from China. You could be forgiven for thinking that was a typing error, but its not and Eastman is a unique brand producing hand-crafted instruments in its workshop in China. We have a enlightening chat with Pepijn t'Hart, about his journey leading the Mandolin & Guitar division, the ethos of the company and what lies ahead for the brand. And in a 9-42 exclusive we even get a sneak peek of their new solid-body. The one where we talk to Doug Sparkes of Auden Guitars It's been quite a ride for Doug, not only is he the driving force behind Auden Guitars, but he has also taken ownership of another classic UK guitar brand in Gordon Smith. We had a great chat with Doug, as he took us through his guitar backstory and the clear ethos that underpins both of these cherished brands. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4GyXXJNFKyWFDvjqz9Eao8?si=T8X4P7W5TByhR-8nhR-Xaw (Episode 33 Playlist) https://audenguitars.com (Auden Website) https://www.gordonsmithguitars.com (Gordan Smith Website) https://www.instagram.com/theguitarshowuk/ (9-42 Instagram) https://twitter.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Twitter) https://www.facebook.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Facebook) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCozetpXDzhNSAELq6wnoLhQ (9-42 Youtube) https://www.theguitarshow.co.uk/ (9-42 Website) https://www.facebook.com/ashortstoriespodcast/ (ashortstories Facebook) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
The one where we talked football & rockabilly with Darrel Higham. It's a bit difficult to know where to start when describing Darrel. As a guitarist he has played in numerous bands, with the likes of Shakin' Stevens & Imelda May. Worked on sessions for artists such as Chrissie Hynde & Robert Plant and appeared in the West End (and on tour) playing Eddie Cochran. He is a Gretsch endorsee and helped Peavey design their first ever semi-acoustic guitar, the Rockingham. Oh, and he was born in Bedford and supports Sunderland football club. All of which probably accounts for the fact we had plenty to talk about. https://darrelhigham.com (Darrel Website) https://open.spotify.com/playlist/349hzbvMuBLBw1XBUCBv0N?si=ZYECdxDDToiQN4sXKdKR6A (Episode 32 Playlist) https://www.instagram.com/theguitarshowuk/ (9-42 Instagram) https://twitter.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Twitter) https://www.facebook.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Facebook) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCozetpXDzhNSAELq6wnoLhQ (9-42 Youtube) https://www.theguitarshow.co.uk/ (9-42 Website) https://www.facebook.com/ashortstoriespodcast/ (ashortstories Facebook) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
The one where Jason chatted to Paul Stanley. Yes, you did read that correctly, the Paul Stanley. Being a lifelong Kiss fan you can only imagine what it's been like since the possibility of talking to Paul was first mooted. Bless him, Jason did his best not to sound too much of a fanboy, and asked Paul about his new band Soul Station. The project explores Pauls love of R'n'B and Soul music and the album 'Now & Then' is released on the 19th March. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzqABNJblpg (Now & Then - Documentary) https://www.paulstanley.com/category/soul-station/ (Paul Stanley & Soul Station Website) https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2qVcwfuteYacYDlJbwvhiM?si=vQfaOO6kTeSUnBvSTBwP_w (Episode 31 Playlist) https://www.instagram.com/theguitarshowuk/ (9-42 Instagram) https://twitter.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Twitter) https://www.facebook.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Facebook) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCozetpXDzhNSAELq6wnoLhQ (9-42 Youtube) https://www.theguitarshow.co.uk/ (9-42 Website) https://www.facebook.com/ashortstoriespodcast/ (ashortstories Facebook) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
The one where we stayed up late. to talk to Misha, stateside. It's also the one that could have gone on for hours as we had a whale of a time verbally-riffing with the Periphery guitarist about all manner of stuff, including Cricket, QAnon & Top Gear. We do find time to talk about Signature Guitars, working with Tim @ Bareknuckle Pickups and the less than fun parts of recording a Solo record. It's been a few weeks since this episode was recorded, but listening back this week you can't help but be struck by what a top bloke Misha is, and a pleasure to chat to. http://periphery.net (Periphery Website) https://www.facebook.com/misha.mansoor (Misha Facebook) https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5LBJvscZ0afr7R3KSFHlVD?si=Db0DhusoR22ymKdi1EDygA (Episode 30 Playlist) https://www.instagram.com/theguitarshowuk/ (9-42 Instagram) https://twitter.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Twitter) https://www.facebook.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Facebook) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCozetpXDzhNSAELq6wnoLhQ (9-42 Youtube) https://www.theguitarshow.co.uk/ (9-42 Website) https://www.facebook.com/ashortstoriespodcast/ (ashortstories Facebook) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
The one where we got up early to talk to Tim Mills of Bare Knuckle Pickups. Now we could easily have chatted to Tim about his back story as a Session Player and his ten years (plus) as part of the Elkie Brooks band. But that (as they say) was just the start of it. When the time came to leave the touring life behind, Tim spotted an opportunity to revolutionise the way Pickups were designed, marketed and sold to make it easier for Guitarists to capture the sound in their heads. It's a fascinating journey and a testament to the work and passion of Tim and his team. https://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk (Bare Knuckle Pickups Website) https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0BIw5zB8GfuSEezE7DPXbq?si=vQ44EHUpRyuhAah-C7eA1A (Episode 29 Playlist) https://www.instagram.com/theguitarshowuk/ (9-42 Instagram) https://twitter.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Twitter) https://www.facebook.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Facebook) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCozetpXDzhNSAELq6wnoLhQ (9-42 Youtube) https://www.theguitarshow.co.uk/ (9-42 Website) https://www.facebook.com/ashortstoriespodcast/ (ashortstories Facebook) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
The one where we zoomed with Aziz Ibrahim. Talk about a career that's impossible to pigeon-hole. Aziz is a genuine one-off, not only because of the way he plays but also because of the variety of genres he has worked within over the last thirty-odd years. Every chapter of his story reveals another twist, another artist or band he has played with, or another landmark album he has played on. The one where Jason tried not embarrass himself in front of one of his heroes. Bruce Kulick has had one hell of a musical career. For many he is best known as the lead guitarist in Kiss in the non make-up years of the eighties & nineties, but that is just a chapter of the story. Prior to joining Kiss he had toured with Meatloaf, BlackJack & Michael Bolton amongst others and since 2000 he has been a member of Grand Funk Railroad. We had a great time chatting with Bruce about his career, touring with his brother (Bob Kulick) and how Covid has changed how he approaches his work. The hour just flew by, and with finished up with many questions left unasked - so hopefully we can catch up with Bruce again as the year progresses. https://www.brucekulick.com (Bruce Website) https://www.facebook.com/officialbrucekulick/ (Bruce Facebook) https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1z8sq0LBvUODP7MzC9TXmZ?si=ZvWoYR_hQ_aIveO6IoYNCg (Episode 27 Playlist) https://www.instagram.com/theguitarshowuk/ (9-42 Instagram) https://twitter.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Twitter) https://www.facebook.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Facebook) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCozetpXDzhNSAELq6wnoLhQ (9-42 Youtube) https://www.theguitarshow.co.uk/ (9-42 Website) https://www.facebook.com/ashortstoriespodcast/ (ashortstories Facebook) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
The one that got cancelled because of Covid... But that wasn't going to keep a good man down, and we finally got to have a catch-up with Joel in the first week of December. Now you might be thinking 'who the hell is Joel McIver?' but there is a very good chance you have read numerous things he has written, because prolific doesn't seem enough to describe his output. Take your pick from books on artists such as Metallica, Rage Against The Machine or The Sex Pistols, articles for the Guardian, Classic Rock or Bass Player magazine or even as the go-to-obituary-guy-of-choice. Joel is a wonderful storyteller, so sit back, and immerse yourself in ninety minutes of music industry natter as we try and keep up. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joel_McIver (Joel McIver - Wikipedia) https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3pt1OggQahcsu17lERmUuC?si=01egm1C3Qgy2b0U88kGEvw (Episode 26 Playlist) https://www.instagram.com/theguitarshowuk/ (9-42 Instagram) https://twitter.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Twitter) https://www.facebook.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Facebook) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCozetpXDzhNSAELq6wnoLhQ (9-42 Youtube) https://www.theguitarshow.co.uk/ (9-42 Website) https://www.facebook.com/ashortstoriespodcast/ (ashortstories Facebook) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
The second half of our conversation with the former Little Angel. We kind of picked up where we left out and talked about the future of music education, before getting onto the changes in the way that bands now fund music production & generate income. Oh, and then we talked about guitars for a bit. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5JrflBAfeHV3SdvI39Pnkb?si=9djS7H8NQq-3MIfH9f8Z0w (Episode 24 Playlist) https://www.instagram.com/theguitarshowuk/ (9-42 Instagram) https://twitter.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Twitter) https://www.facebook.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Facebook) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCozetpXDzhNSAELq6wnoLhQ (9-42 Youtube) https://www.theguitarshow.co.uk/ (9-42 Website) https://www.facebook.com/ashortstoriespodcast/ (ashortstories Facebook) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
The one where we talked to a former angel. Bruces career began as the guitarist in rock band Little Angels. Through the late 80's and early 90's, Little Angels achieved 11 top forty hit singles and 4 Top 20 albums – including a #1 with 1993's much acclaimed ‘Jam'. Little Angels toured across the globe with Bon Jovi, Van Halen, Aerosmith, Bryan Adams, ZZ Top and Aerosmith. After they split, Bruce want on to form the band b.l.o.w releasing two albums. After a stint working for the Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM) in Guildford, Bruce co-founded the much respected and award winning British Institute of Modern Music (BIMM) franchise of music colleges. We chatted about all of the above, as well as his current educational project WaterBear. https://www.waterbear.org.uk (WaterBear) http://www.littleangelsofficial.com/site/ (Little Angels) https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5JrflBAfeHV3SdvI39Pnkb?si=9djS7H8NQq-3MIfH9f8Z0w (Episode 24 Playlist) https://www.instagram.com/theguitarshowuk/ (9-42 Instagram) https://twitter.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Twitter) https://www.facebook.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Facebook) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCozetpXDzhNSAELq6wnoLhQ (9-42 Youtube) https://www.theguitarshow.co.uk/ (9-42 Website) https://www.facebook.com/ashortstoriespodcast/ (ashortstories Facebook) https://www.instagram.com/ashortstories/ (ashortstories Instagram) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
The one where we have a chinwag with Ross Bailey. Ross Bailey is a session guitarist and product demonstrator, and has worked in and around the music industry for the last 25 years. Over that time he has worked in retail, for the likes of Academy of Sound & Sound Control as well as for brands such as Line 6, Peavey & Yamaha. We take a meander through some of the highlights, including his introduction to the world of product demonstration with Line 6 and jumping at the chance to go out on tour with X factor winner Sam Bailey. https://www.instagram.com/theguitarshowuk/ (9-42 Instagram) https://twitter.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Twitter) https://www.facebook.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Facebook) https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3Bb6njlwLMVI4TVw1hmpql?si=nyhPbCMERQOKfv-XEm7FDw (9-42 Playlist) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCozetpXDzhNSAELq6wnoLhQ (9-42 Youtube) https://www.theguitarshow.co.uk/ (9-42 Website) https://www.facebook.com/ashortstoriespodcast/ (ashortstories Facebook) https://www.instagram.com/ashortstories/ (ashortstories Instagram) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
The one where 9-42 came up against a (suspected) case of Covid-19. We knew it had to happen sooner or later, our scheduled guest for this week Joel McIver unfortunately had to cancel at the last minute as he took to his bed with possible Covid symptoms. First & foremost we wish Joel well and hope to speak to him as soon as he is feeling brighter, we understand he is using the time to knock out another couple of books on Thrash Metal. So, in his place, the Reluctant Podcaster himself Jason Hunt stepped up to the plate to update you on plans for the Guitar Show in 2021. The one where Ant chats to a chap he used to work in a music store with (who just happens to now play in Wishbone Ash...!) For most people simply working in a guitar store at some point in their life would be enough, but then going on to own your own store would probably put you in the 'charmed life' category. How about if you did all that, and then got the call from one of your biggest musical influences with the invitation to join the band, and go-on to tour the world? By rights we should all hate Mark a little bit, but it's impossible because he is such a genuine fella - and one hell of a player. Join us as we explore his journey, talk about the future and then get proper nerdy about carry-on films. https://www.mark-abrahams.com (Mark Website) https://www.facebook.com/WishboneMark (Mark Facebook) https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7MEBcRnxBm1bHmKVJYg3l7?si=f607UirCQD2fvCrrMpm4BA (Episode 21 Playlist) https://www.instagram.com/theguitarshowuk/ (9-42 Instagram) https://twitter.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Twitter) https://www.facebook.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Facebook) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCozetpXDzhNSAELq6wnoLhQ (9-42 Youtube) https://www.theguitarshow.co.uk/ (9-42 Website) https://www.facebook.com/ashortstoriespodcast/ (ashortstories Facebook) https://www.instagram.com/ashortstories/ (ashortstories Instagram) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
