IMPRINTS - Reinforced Records (1990-1996) - d mix & Evolve Reinforced Records. Inspired by a night in the Jazz Cafe recently with 4 Hero, Fabio and Grooverider amongst others. I thought it was time to jump into a truly foundational label. One of the first i collected actually! Founded in ‘89 by Marc Mac and Gus Lawrence then joined by Dennis McFarlane. Most of the early releases were combinations of the founders themselves, 4Hero, Manix and Tek 9. Moving towards late ‘92/'93 the label was at the forefront of the darker side of the music. Looking at Goldie with Rufige, the continued work of Doc Scott and Nasty Habits, and not forgetting 4Hero and the techier sample led sound of theirs. You also have to mention the Enforcers Series that was so popular and are still so sought after! I've decided to focus on the earlier music from Reinforced, finishing up just about where the ‘2nd Phase' started. I'll take you right up to ‘96. I'll dedicate a final section to one of my favourite producers, Nookie. Who took the Reinforced energy and added that musicality he's so well known for. Before that is a mix of other artists that shaped the sound of this label. From the craziness of Nick OD, the drums of Ray Keith, the pianos of Manix, the edge of Rider to ruffness of Rufige and the drums of Manix, the feel of Manix, basically Manix… stop saying Manix… Manix. Speaking of M***x, I've included three tracks in the mix from one of my favourite EPs of all time. Tune for tune a winner… the EP is Called ‘Oblivion (Head in the Clouds)'. Find me a better track for track EP… I'll wait… Expect to hear everything from Rivet1201 all the way through to RIVET1293, I've had a lot of fun pulling out my favourites from this weighty back catalogue, I really hope you enjoy it. True Playaz The home of Hype, Zinc and Pascal, back in 96' this label was everywhere. You can hear its influence all the way through Drum and Bass / Jungle history, right up to today. We've included a fair amount of the classics here as well as some of the lesser spotted personal faves. Focusing on music between the years of 1996-2000 and produced by Hype, Zinc, Pascal and their many aliases, plus some well known producers from this time. Wow! Here it is then - Evenin' all! We started this series of shows in 2011, it's been on at least 3 radio stations, a podcast on its own and a massive amount of fun - but it's time for a change up! Our new show The40 will be starting in the New Year - It'll be much the same as Back to the Future, loads of new music mixed, but just the chance to play some new jingles (when i've made them…), we'll have a couple of new features and a bit of a monthly chart for my favourite of the 40 tracks. Up with our next instalment of the Back To The Future Podcast, we return to our ‘Icon Series'. Previous alumni have been Calibre, Break, Rufige Kru and Ivy Lab. As you can see from that quality list, they have to be a bit special to make it… and our next graduates fulfil the brief here perfectly. Having produced some of the scene's most cutting edge music for 14 years, including 3 amazing albums, Delay No More, Mistress and How We Live, the Brighton based duo have been present across many of the best labels around including Shogun, Critical, Exit and Metalheadz. Something different from us here at Back To The Future HQ for this podcast. If you could imagine the two 8's of #88 as two bald heads, well that works pretty good for us follically challenged DJs of a certain vintage… especially myself, Mr Evolve and extra specially for this show DJ Uplift. In fact myself and Uplift have been at this for a minute. We met on a station he ran in London, Addiction FM! .. err.. a few years ago... and It's always been a pleasure to b2b with him. A year ago we got together and played some of our favourite old music but for this show we wanted to do something different… Uplift has been producing and DJing this genre for a while and has music coming out on scene stalwart, Cantina Cuts. He also graces the show with some forthcoming music from others and an exclusive look at a nearly finished track from himself! With all that in mind I felt it best for him to supervise our first trip into this style for the show. What happened next was just like me and him on the radio in the 90's, phone going crazy, beats flying everywhere and a 2 hour show passes in the blink of an eye! A little late but worth the wait… Fresh out the studio with a new show! A show jam packed with nearly 50 tracks, tracks from the last few weeks, tracks from a while back and tracks for an amazing cause. A last minute addition to the proceedings is an 11 minute mini mix of the unbelievable Sofa King Sick IV LP! 14 Tunes from across the scene's best, pushing the boundaries and styles again in true Sofa Sound fashion. Following the success of the all Evolve affair we are back this month with another special show to mark our 80th outing. This month joined by legendary MC, Fokus. Having emerged onto the scene in the early 00's, based in Hertfordshire, Fokus has been building his reputation locally, nationally and internationally for over 20 years. We first met on Hertfordshire's Impact FM around 2000/1. We were also lucky enough to acquire his talents for our Drum Project events. From his time on Origin FM, to London events like Traffic, Renegade Hardware and the legendary Therapy Sessions, Fokus has been learning his craft well. I was lucky enough to watch him at his best at the Sofa Sound event in Bristol in September 2019, he was absolute class. As you can see from his discography, versatility is key. Fokus is at home on a deep rolling beat as he is on the toughest and darkest of drums. Right from his first release in 2011 to now his choices for collaboration are important to him. A long standing partnership with show favourite label, Dispatch Recordings, has been a constant exemplified by last year's release of his solo release the massive ‘Frequencies EP'. Now working with other artists including DLR, Black Barrel, Dub Head, DBR UK, Tephra & Arkoze, Bredren and Ben Soundscape. He has said… “I think it's important for an MC in the Drum and Bass scene to evolve with the music and avoid the clichés. I like spending time on my written rhymes, but I also try to freestyle as much as possible. It's more spontaneous and the crowd can really vibe off it. For me, a radio show is the perfect environment to chat about some deeper rhymes, as people can hear every word and appreciate the story or message within the lyrics”.
