Before we get back to the new stuff with the40 Pt.6 (due in March), it's time to have a look over our shoulder at yesteryear and where it all began. Now, it may take a while, but the plan is to have a mix of tracks from every year from 1990 to 2000

I was lucky enough to be a dnb raver in Washington DC and Baltimore during  the late 1990's and early 2000's. It was only years later that I came to realize how extra special that period was for DC dnb and its own roots and culture. This weeks guest played an integral part in building a lot of that. It's really humbling to share this one with ya'll. Please welcome, R4NS0M. Originally hailing from the storied Washington DC drum & bass scene, Boston's R4NS0M has been at the forefront of the American drum & bass movement since its early days. Over the course of his career, He's performed at legendary events like Buzz, Ultraworld, Resonate, Eklektic, Platinum, Respect, Elements, and Cadence, and crafted mixes for Toronto's iconic Prophecy FM and Winslow's Bad Snares Anonymous. As a producer, he's released music on such labels as Moving Shadow, Ohm Resistance, Soul Deep, Detached Audio, 1 More Thing, WiddFam, and 4 Corners Music, and worked with a number of artists, including Sinthetix, Corrupt Souls, UFO!, Ben Rolo, Fake, Dvalue and Metcalf. From our guest Ben Coleman: In London and the surrounding area in 1994, Jungle music was the most exciting thing around, experimental, multicultural, utterly new and totally local. “Jungle Mania 2” encapsulates the moment that this underground scene erupted from the clubs and pirate radio stations of London into the national consciousness (and childhood record collections) of Britain, after the top 40 breakthrough success of “Original Nuttah” by UK Apachi & Shy FX.The details of the release speaks to this underground/mainstream tension: it was released on Telstar, who specialised in compilations and telemarketed major artist compilations like Slade's “Crackers (The Christmas Party Album)” (1985), “Morning Has Broken (20 Religious Favourites)” and (setting a dancefloor precedent) the popular pop/rave “Deep Heat” compilations of the late 80s and early 90s.Evidently, Telstar were fairly agnostic about the content of their releases and were just giving the kids what they wanted, and they wanted “35 Of The Most Cantankerous, Ruffneck Jungle Ryddims Ever”! Jungle Mania 2 album was duly advertised on commercial TV and was available at Woolworths, and I will go out on a limb and say it was probably the double cassette that was rocking most bedroom stereos.The sleeve notes give some indication as to where all of this art has sprung from. The ‘licensed in association with…” section is an extensive list of 25 labels, some of whom are legendary in the breakbeat scene: Aphrodite, Ibiza, Ganja, Moving Shadow, Reinforced, S.O.U.R., Suburban Base. These were the roots of the scene, a totally grass-roots, London based phenomenon that sprang from the ashes of acid house and hardcore rave, fusing breakbeats with dub basslines and ragga MCing to spawn a new, darker dancehall hybrid. At this time the scene was resolutely DIY- a good portion of the artists featured on this compilation owned and managed the labels releasing the music, or worked in the record stores selling self-released white label 12”s, or DJ'd on the many pirate stations that were proliferating across the tower blocks of the city. This is truly Underground music, but packaged by the people who brought you “Rock Legends (12 Timeless Rock Classics)”, and with a funny googly-eyed face on the front.For the “full-on live experience” the sleeve notes advise that we “check Jungle Mania events in the London area”. Jungle Mania was (and still is, 30 years on) one of the biggest and best promoters of Jungle events in the UK, and were perfectly positioned to be the brand name for these compilations.What to say about the music? To this day, for many die-hard listeners and collectors, Jungle (and its more straight-faced twin sibling Drum and Bass) has never topped the 1994-95 era, during which the clash of cultures and styles exploded in black plastic shards of brilliance, experimentalism, hilarity and rhythmic innovation. So, for this month's mix, I wanted to return to one of the first styles I got into as a DJ. Back then, music like this fell under the name of “breakbeat”. This evolved into a much better one: DRUM & BASS. And like many other electronic genres, it has its offshoots. Jungle, Jump-Up, Tech-step, Ragga-Styles, Intelligent, Jazz-step, Atmospheric, Neurofunk, Hard-step, Dark-step, as well as Dubstep. From these we also now have the sultry, jazzy Liquid Funk (lots of beautiful vocals, very dream-like). We are honoured, proud and excited to open our parallel mix series 'Heavyweight Boxers' with the one they call Addiction, who has provided a 30 minute selection of pure bliss. As part of the renowned duo, Carlito & Addiction were at the forefront of the original Drum and Bass movement with Addiction having residencies at two of London`s premier club nights, Speed (later Swerve) and Movement. When not out on the road, they were in the studio producing some the most prolific music in the golden era of DnB. Together they put out material such as “Supergrass” on Defunked Records and “Just Wanna Be” for Fabio`s Creative Source. Individually, Addiction released tunes like “Bodyswerve” and “Tijuana” for Moving Shadow. The duo played a vital role in shaping the more musical side of Drum and Bass and are frequently referenced as a source of inspiration by emerging talent. Il est tombé amoureux assez tardivement des tracks du label Moving Shadows ce qui l'a décidé à se mettre à la production DNB après plusieurs essais dans d'autres genres. Depuis il a signé sur quelques labels de renoms comme Technique ou encore Soul Deep et Liquid Drops. Son styles est clairement caractérisé par des atmosphères planantes ou des mélodies entêtantes. Il a plusieurs releases à venir en cette fin d'année ainsi que plusieurs collab! *English : Dan Guidance, is a DNB producer from Bristol/UK. He is mostly associated with the atmospheric Liquid side of DNB. He takes his music influences from all over, and this shows in his own productions. Blending Drum and Bass, seamlessly with elements of Jazz, Dub, Techno, Trance, House, World, and anything else that interests him at the time. He has started his musical journey, DJing in the mid 90s, working his way through most electronic music genres. Drawing on influences from old Moving Shadow records, Dan produced his first real Drum and Bass track in 2011. To say I was honoured when asked to do this is an understatement. A chance to put a few tracks together for someone special… in support of someone special - Long-time friend and all round legend, James (Dirty Abits)! 3 years ago we lost a special lady, a sister a daughter and a fellow DJ. The tracks range from 1993 to literally this week. I wanted to tip a hat to some of the tracks Sam liked to mix and then play a few that I think she might have liked too. A broad mix of labels and styles to compliment her taste and hopefully something for everyone. Really enjoyed doing this..
