General David H. Petraeus (US Army, Ret.) joins Patrick this week to discuss a framework that leaders at every level can use to develop, refine, and improve. In addition, they discuss how to effectively develop leaders by combining academic and hands-on experiences with role models and inspiration. Patrick reflects on a time some twenty years when then Colonel Petraeus had a direct impact on a young Captain Leddin. Learn more about the leadership framework discussed in this episode at  Harvard's Belfer Center https://www.belfercenter.org/publication/david-petraeus-strategic-leadership General Petraeus Bio General Petraeus is a Partner at KKR and Chairman of the KKR Global Institute, which he established in May 2013. He is also a member of the boards of directors of Optiv and OneStream, a Strategic Advisor for Sempra, a venture investor in more than 25 startups, and engaged in a variety of academic endeavors. Following retirement from the military and after Senate confirmation by a vote of 94-0, he served as Director of the CIA during a period of significant achievements in the global war on terror, the establishment of important Agency digital initiatives, and substantial investments in the Agency's most important asset, its human capital. CFO Thought Leader

The following is a bonus replay of one of 2022's popular episodes. When Herald Chen was growing up in a town not far from Pittsburg, he dreamed of someday running the small town's steel mill. Years later when he was graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, the steel mill no longer occupied Chen's maturing career aspirations. “My two job offers were to either go make soap for Procter & Gamble at a manufacturing plant in Baltimore or go to Wall Street,“ remembers Chen, who adds that the offers for the seemingly different jobs came as a result of having graduated from UPenn's Management and Technology program—a curriculum that offered a dual degree in engineering and finance. Chen chose Wall Street and in 1995 landed at KKR, the private equity firm that had feasted on leveraged buyouts in 1970s and 1980s. Recalls Chen: “I had a front row seat for meeting many CEOs and CFOs and invested behind a couple dozen of them, so I learned a lot about what the good, the bad, and the ugly look like in these companies.”   Twenty-seven years later, KKR can arguably be seen to have been the mother ship of Chen's finance career, a place that over time he would leave and then return to as the investment house provided him with the wherewithal to open new professional chapters—the longest being from 2007 to 2019, when he headed KKR's Technology, Media, and Telecom practice. Along the way, Chen demonstrated a rapport with C-suite members and company boards that distinguished him from other investors, a trait that led to a growing number of invitations to sit on different company boards. “I had figured out that I wanted to be building businesses, but I also knew that I wasn't the smartest or brightest or most charismatic person in the room, so maybe the best way for me wasn't actually sitting in the CEO seat but instead was investing and sitting on boards and helping CEOs,” comments Chen, who has held a number of board seats, as well as served as board chair for such companies as Internet Brands/WebMD, Optiv, Epicor, BMC Software, and Mitchell International.  With a boardroom track record that few of his CFO peers can match, Chen attributes his success in part to being a good listener.  “I would invest behind CEOs and CFOs whom others just didn't understand—they just didn't comprehend what these people were trying to do—because I would find that I could create a lot of value with them just by taking a little extra time to hear them through,” remarks Chen. When asked to offer advice for CFOs seeking to lower the temperature of certain boardroom discussions, Chen shares a story involving notable KKR financier Henry Kravis: “When I was at KKR, I made a mistake in some of the numbers one time. It was late in the transaction, at the point where on Wall Street you'd expect to get yelled at and there would be this big blowup—but I remember Henry Kravis just getting very calm and saying, ‘Hey, we'll get through this and come out the other side.'” –Jack Sweeney

This week, Nick talks about PlexTrac's unique software integrations, practical purple team collaboration, and differentiating between his experiences in red teaming and pen testing in offensive cyber.   Timecoded Guide: [00:00] Getting involved in tech through the Army & continuing as a civilian  [07:02] Transitioning from security analyst into pen testing & offensive security [14:41] Explaining the difference between red teaming & pen testing [36:11] Collaborating red & blue to make the perfect purple team [43:16] Using PlexTrac for purple team engagements  [50:07] Avoiding burnout & disengaging from hacking after work   Sponsor Links: Thank you to our friends at Axonius and PlexTrac for sponsoring this episode! The Axonius solution correlates asset data from existing solutions to provide an always up-to-date inventory, uncover gaps, and automate action — giving IT and security teams the confidence to control complexity. Learn more at axonius.com/hackervalley PlexTrac, the Proactive Cybersecurity Management Platform, brings red and blue teams together for better collaboration and communication. Check them out at plextrac.com/hackervalley   What was that transition like for you from security analyst to pen tester? Nick describes his transition from being a security analyst who looked at pen testing reports to becoming a pen tester as nothing short of fascinating. After struggling to re-engineer the reports he was seeing at work as an analyst, Nick took his chances on becoming a practitioner through getting certified, expanding his education, and working for a small pen testing consulting company. Working in that boutique environment gave him an overall appreciation for the nuance and knowledge needed to be a successful pen tester.  “I've gotten lucky to see both sides of the coin, meaning that raw boutique with six folks where you're the entire pen testing practice. And also, I've been in a pen testing practice with dozens upon dozens of team members supporting me.”   People misunderstand purple teaming. Can you talk about what purple team collaboration really looks like? Many perceive purple teaming as the red team and the blue team just working together. In reality, Nick explains that an actual purple team requires a lot more than occasional proximity and communication— it requires strategy, established procedures, and set goals and outcomes. Instead of forcing proximity without the proper leadership or planning, a program like PlexTrac needs to be in place to further facilitate and create that complete purple team integration.   “Folks still have their day job. During a purple team engagement, the blue team still has to protect the fidelity of the environment, they have a day job they're doing. So, establish rules, establish a procedure, and then, really come up with outcomes that you want to see.”   How does red vs blue team collaboration translate into PlexTac's application? Purple team collaboration starts with having a clear plan and communication strategy. Enter PlexTrac, a program designed to be a place for collaboration. The best part of PlexTrac in Nick's opinion? They're the pane of glass to look through, not the replacement for other programs. Being able to integrate programs like SCYTHE into PlexTrac not only maximizes collaboration opportunities, but also avoids issues of conflicting technology.  “It's a place for collaboration. It's a place where the data lives and you work on it together. Whether you're starting your purple team journey, or you have an established purple team and you want to derive more value, a platform like PlexTrac can go a long way.”   What do you do outside of cybersecurity to avoid burnout? In his years of working with pen testers and practitioners, Nick has seen a lot of burnout and a lot of overworked cyber professionals. To avoid the burnout that feels all too common during the industry's current labor shortage, Nick hikes, plays pool, and tries to keep his screen time down. No matter what your hobby is, be it the media you consume, the content you create, or the games you enjoy, having an outlet outside of the industry will save you from burning out. “I'm not saying screens are bad. I'm just saying to find something that can disengage your mind from the hacks and the cracks, from the tech debt that your brain is incurring, is absolutely important. If you don't find a way to have balance, your brain is going to fry.” --------------- Links: Keep up with our guest Nick Popovich on LinkedIn and Twitter Learn more about PlexTrac on LinkedIn and the PlexTrac website Connect with Davin Jackson on LinkedIn and Twitter Watch the live recording of this show on our YouTube Continue the conversation by joining our Discord Hear more from Hacker Valley Media and Hacker Valley Blue

Ransomware insights with Andrzej Kawalec, Vodafone's Gobal Head of Cybersecurity

Increased digital dependency means that ransomware is the next global pandemic, and this time there is no vaccine that can act as a silver bullet to prevent it. The last twelve months have witnessed an explosion of ransomware incidents across the world. These incidents have also started to have real life consequences, with the attacks on both the Colonial Pipeline and Ireland's Health Service Executive highlighting that ransomware can impact the public's everyday life. As society becomes more reliant upon technology and digital systems, driven by the pandemic and the advent of remote working, Andrzej Kawalec Head of Security at Vodafone Business, believes ransomware is set to become the next global pandemic. Much like the COVID-19 pandemic, ransomware is a global problem, and we even see different variants of ransom across the world. The nature of modern cybercrime means that these attacks are now targeted, with cybercriminals undertaking research to understand exactly how much money to demand as ransom. In the future, Andrzej believes we will see misinformation used as a ransom. With an individual or organisation's brand more important than ever, cybercriminals will look to hijack social media profiles in exchange for a ransom payment. This is the future of extortion. Ronan talks to Andrzej about this and why the focus should be to minimise the impact of an attack and ensure that those businesses that are hit are able to survive without too much damage. More about Andrzej Kawalec: Andrzej Kawalec is the Head of Security Portfolio at Vodafone Business. Andrzej manages Vodafone Business' global portfolio of security offerings. He is widely recognised for his expertise in cyber security and digital change. A former CTO himself, he has a vast amount of experience working at the board-level across public and private sectors, helping to define and promote cyber security strategy. He believes that Security is the enabling layer for innovation. From autonomous driving to digital healthcare, the technologies and societies of the future will not reach their full potential without secure digital foundations. Prior to joining Vodafone, Andrzej was Global CTO for security and Director of Security Research at HP, as well as head of Strategy and CTO at Optiv the world's largest security Systems integrator.

Has the Time Come for Passwords to Take a Back Seat to Security

The majority of breaches today no longer come through delivered malware as our systems have become very strong with detecting and blocking these resulting in more effort than value for the attacker. Instead, it's easier, faster and more economical to just try and steal your password, or better yet have you provide it yourself. This podcast takes a look at the security risks that are actually derived from one of our more important security controls… passwords; and look at what we can do to minimize those risks moving forward. Questions Dave will ask the speakers: A recent study by Verizon found that more than 80 percent of breaches through hacking involve brute force or the use of lost or stolen credentials. Microsoft estimates that there are 921 password attacks per second. We've been educated for years by the security industry and our awareness programs that passwords are the most crucial component to protecting our environments and our information. How is it that this sacred key to our kingdom is actually resulting in opening so many doors for attackers? NIST has taken steps to try and reduce the bleeding with their new Password guidelines and best practices which encourage passphrases of more characters, less complexity and less changes. Are these steps in the right direction to actually keeping us secure? Many security tools are now providing artificial intelligence around login requests that look to see if the member is coming from a known device and location prior to providing access. Would implementing these types of risk based controls with MFA and a passphrase by the answer to our problems? Biometrics for authentication always seemed to be the next logical step for passwords. We have our basic biometrics on devices however, those are all back supported by a password or PIN. Will we ever get to a place where we're truly only using biometrics for all authentication? I understand that Apple, Google and Microsoft are working on a solution together that will get rid of passwords. Instead, they will just leverage the biometrics on your phone as your access code to everything. With this in mind do we just need to sit tight and all our troubles will soon be fixed? General David H. Petraeus, US Army (Ret.), is a Partner with the global investment firm KKR and the Chairman of the KKR Global Institute, which he established in June 2013. He is also a personal venture capitalist and serves on the boards of KKR companies OneStream and Optiv.  Before joining KKR, he served in government for 38-1/2 years, culminating his 37-year military career with six consecutive commands as a general officer, five of which were in combat – including the Surge in Iraq, US Central Command, and US/Coalition Forces in Afghanistan – and then serving as Director of the CIA, following Senate confirmation by a vote of 94-0.  General Petraeus graduated with distinction from the US Military Academy in 1974 and later earned a Ph.D. at Princeton University.  He has held academic appointments at USMA, the City University of New York's Macaulay Honors College, Harvard's Belfer Center, and the University of Southern California.  He is currently a Senior Fellow and Lecturer at Yale's Jackson Institute for Global Affairs, Co-Chairman of the Woodrow Wilson Center's Global Advisory Council, Senior Vice President of the Royal United Services Institute, and a member of the Trilateral Commission, Council on Foreign Relations, and Aspen Strategy Group.  His many awards include four Defense Distinguished Service Medals, the Secretary of State's Distinguished Service Award, the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, two NATO Meritorious Service Medals, the Combat Action Badge, the Ranger tab, and master parachutist wings. He has also been decorated by 13 foreign countries and is believed to be the only person who, while in uniform, threw out the first pitch of a World Series game and did the coin toss for a Super Bowl. He was also runner-up for Time Person of the Year in 2007, when Russia's President Vladimir Putin garnered that honor. On this episode, General Petraeus shares his journey to the late 19th century for a dinner at the Lotus Club in New York City with then former President and retired General Ulysses S. Grant. He puts forward why and how the conversation would unfold. During our interview, General Petraeus also provides perspective on cybersecurity, why Iran may be the next big crisis, managing China, the war in Ukraine, and our commitment to Afghan partners and refugees. Plus, he offers what he never travels without, why exercise and reading are critical diversions during grinding experiences, and why social media is another war zone. General Petraeus is just one of the exceptional individuals featured on the podcast where Host Steven Shalowitz explores with his guests where they would go if given a one way ticket, no coming back. Their destinations may be in the past, present, future, real, imaginary or a state of mind. Steven's guests have included: Nobel Peace Prize Winner, President Jose Ramos-Horta; Legendary Talk Show Host, Dick Cavett; Law Professor, Alan Dershowitz; Fashion Expert, Tim Gunn; Broadcast Legend, Charles Osgood; International Rescue Committee President & CEO, David Miliband; Former United States Senator, Joseph I. Lieberman; Playwright, David Henry Hwang; Journalist-Humorist-Actor, Mo Rocca; SkyBridge Capital Founder & Co-Managing Partner, Anthony Scaramucci; Abercrombie & Kent Founder, Geoffrey Kent; Travel Expert, Pauline Frommer, as well as leading photographers, artists, chefs, writers, intellectuals, etc.
