Jerry Garganeous, 31 year veteran firefighter and fire investigator, tells us about major fire risks and how to avoid them. Jerry shares stories from his time as an investigator, including what it feels like to be so close the death. Below is a story produced by KTHV, channel 11 in Little Rock back in October, 2013. PINE BLUFF, Ark.(KTHV) - A group of Pine Bluff firefighters are credited for saving the life of another firefighter after a fire on October 19."Me and the other lieutenant we had got somehow separated in there," said Lt. Jerry Garganeous, a 26-year veteran with the department."It's dark and it's smoky and you really can't see anything," said Garganeous. He said with no light in the home, he felt his way through the structure; Garganeous said he then ran out of oxygen."I ran out of air trying to find my way out," he said."When it runs out of air it literally sucks to your face," he adds. After making a "may day" call over the radio, which indicated that a firefighter was in distress, Garganeous loss consciousness. He said his fellow fighters rescued him within a minute."I'm glad I was there. Any one of the guys here would have done the same thing," said firefighter Brody Channell. Channell has been with the department for two years and is one of the firefighters who rescued Garganeous. "It's an amazing thing. Without the State: Self-Organization and Political Activism in Ukraine (U Toronto Press, 2022) explores the 2013-14 Euromaidan protests - a wave of demonstrations and civil unrest in Ukraine - through in-depth ethnographic research with leftist, feminist, and student activists in Kyiv. The book discusses the concept of self-organization and the notion that if something needs to be done and a person has the competence to do it, then they should simply do it. Emily Channell-Justice reveals how self-organization in Ukraine came out of leftist practices but actors from across the spectrum of political views also adopted self-organization over the course of Euromaidan, including far-right groups. The widespread adoption of self-organization encouraged Ukrainians to rethink their expectations of the relationship between citizens and their state. The book explains how self-organized practices have changed people's views on what they think they can contribute to their own communities, and in the wake of Russia's renewed invasion of Ukraine in 2022, it has also motivated new networks of mutual aid within Ukraine and beyond. Based on ethnographic fieldwork, including the author's first-hand experience of the entirety of the Euromaidan protests, Without the State provides a unique analytical account of this crucial moment in Ukraine's post-Soviet history. Matt welcomes back Kyla Channell and Stevie Lyn Smith, for Part 2 of a discussion around nutrition for female athletes and fitness enthusiasts. Part 1 is HERE. Both Stevie and Kyla bring with them a wealth of expertise, passion, and decades of experience in this particular area of fueling for the female. Stevie Lyn Smith, MS, RDN, CSSD, CDN, is one of the lead dieticians with our partner, InsideTracker. She's an experienced Registered Dietitian, board-certified in Sports Nutrition, with a history of working with both individuals and groups in clinical settings. She is wonderfully skilled in sports nutrition, weight management, and, through her work at InsideTracker, brings a great backbone of understanding biomarkers as a tool to help people focus and hone in their nutrition needs. Kyla Channell, MS Nutrition & Human Performance, is also the owner and founder of Nutritional Revolution, where she specializes in elite athlete fueling for each unique sport and sex differences between athletes. She is a longtime nutrition partner of Purple Patch and has worked with countless athletes of all levels from beginner to pro. Episode Timestamps 0:00-012:30 Introduction and Matt's Personal Picks Purple Patch Blog -How to Turn Stress into an Advantage Purple Patch Podcast - Stress is not a Dirty Word Hop on the Interest List for our Upcoming Fall Training Camps, including St. George - email: info@purplepatchfitness.com Purple Patch Website and Newsletter 12:40- The Meat and Potatoes - Fueling for the Female Athlete and Fitness Enthusiast, Part 2 Matt, Kyla, and Stevie provide guidance on: Definitions and distinctions between oligomenorrhea and amenorrhea Are these symptoms exclusive to women with eating disorders, or is it more broad than that? "Many times, we'll see the loss of a menstrual cycle or just irregular cycles in our endurance athletes because there is an energy deficit to some extent, and that could be unintentional, meaning maybe they're in a bigger training block and they're pushing out a ton of calories to hit longer sessions, harder efforts, etc. But they're not matching the the energy intake." The (unintended) difficulties women often feel with not fueling enough based on training load and intensities Why these are often red flags and symptoms of greater problems "Anytime we're getting irregular cycles or losing the cycle for a period of time, it does result in low estrogen and that's a big player in our bone health, of course, among many other physiological functioning things we need going on in the body." What biomarkers or blood test results can be used to identify potential red flags in overall female health and performance? "I've never seen an athlete with overtraining and overreaching, who doesn't have elevated cortisol levels." Consequences of low energy availability on both health and performance "Our strength might decline, we might hit the wall a little bit faster, because again, we don't have those carbs on board. So glycogen stores are inadequate. This increases our risk for injury, you might notice more things like depression or lack of motivation to train, and you might feel a little bit more irritable." Actions for an athlete if they are experiencing elevated stress and biomarker levels? How to help female athletes who have a fear of carbohydrates and clean-eating obsession "Starting small, getting those wins, making the person feel comfortable, and working on helping them trust their bodies a little bit more." Ways to provide validation and proof of success when eating for performance Impacts of birth control on female athletic performance "We might have a harder time recovering from training sessions. We might have a decreased drive to hydrate, right? Being dehydrated absolutely can impact our performance. Some people notice more regular sleep disturbances, or even slight weight gain water retention." Why there is such a negative connotation around perimenopause and menopause and advice on working with this life change. Matt welcomes two powerhouses of nutrition, Kyla Channell and Stevie Lyn Smith, for a deep-dive discussion around nutrition for female athletes and fitness enthusiasts. Both Stevie and Kyla bring with them a wealth of expertise and passion in this particular area of fueling for the female. She is wonderfully skilled in sports nutrition, and weight management, and, through her work at InsideTracker, brings a great backbone of understanding biomarkers as a tool to help people focus and hone in their nutrition needs. She is a longtime nutrition partner of Purple Patch and has worked with countless athletes of all levels from beginner to pro. For decades, everything in female athletics has seemed to be a diluted version of approaches and research studies applied to men. Everything from equipment, gear, training, and nutrition has been conducted through the lens of male-dominated research - "Shrink it and pink it," as you might call it. Fortunately, times are changing, and the gap in gendered research is narrowing. In today's discussion, we hope to shed light on the differences between male and female fueling needs and provide actionable steps to improve performance across work, sport, and life. Episode Timestamps 0:00-010:50 Introduction and Matt's Personal Picks Dig into Purple Patch Blog - Lessons from the Pros Huberman Labs Podcast Purple Patch Website and Newsletter 10:50- The Meat and Potatoes - Fueling for the Female Athlete and Fitness Enthusiast Matt, Kyla, and Stevie provide guidance on: A break of the three macronutrients (fat, protein, and carbohydrate) and their role in your health, sport, and life performance Why protein is so important for female athletes When it comes to protein, we do know that during that high hormone phase, the luteal phase between ovulation and the first day of bleeding, there is an increased protein oxidation, so more potentially muscle tissue broken down or utilized during sport. Best sources for protein uptake Great sources of Leucine do include dairy products so that could be your cottage cheese, it might be milk, orGreek yogurt. Whey protein based powders are also very rich in leucine. There are some plant based protein powders and things like that out there that will are doing a better job at getting some higher leucine content in them as well. Consequences of poor protein intake A lot of times athletes want to improve body composition, and they're not going to be able to do that very well if protein is really low. They might be in a caloric deficit at the end of the day, but they're not supporting their lean muscle tissue, which is obviously a big player in our resting metabolic rate. Protein and other nutrient timing in relation to training Why women should stop fearing carbohydrates If you're doing high intensity training, your body really should have some carbs on board. If you're doing these long distance rides or races, if you want to prevent hitting the wall or that bonk, you need to make sure you have adequate glycogen stores or carbohydrates stored within your muscle and delaying that fatigue. How women use carbs differently in perimenopause Pitfalls of carb restriction via keto or paleo diets for female athletes Why women (especially peri-and-post menopausal) require strength training As we age, we do require a greater external stimuli to get muscle protein synthesis or muscle building because we don't have that anabolic estrogen as prominent as it was when we were younger. Hydration needs How you can measure and assess your habits and health habits - including avoiding the common pitfall of under-fueling relative to your training demands. RED-S. The under-eating relative to training demands. Much of the time this is accidental but results in serious performance and health implications. If we don't have enough energy coming in, the body is going to adapt one way or another and it could be menstrual cycle related. It could be bone density. I think, too, with under fueling, there can be some issues with lipid markers. Purple Patch and Episode Resources This episode is sponsored by our collaboration with INSIDE TRACKER.
