No, this isn't a dream (or even a nightmare): The Sandman, the iconic Vertigo comic book series created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Keith, and Mike Dringenberg, has finally been adapted for television. Paul, Arlo, and The Deli Counter of Justice co-creator Eric Sipple are all huge fans of the comics, and they use their familiarity with the Dreaming to dive deep into the first season of the Netflix TV show. The gang discusses the show's mostly spot-on casting, whether it captures Morpheus as well as Roderick Burgess did, how the filmmakers modernize some of the books' more outdated elements, and so very much more. This week we're talking about Netflix's 10 episode adaptation of the DC/Vertigo comic book series Sandman, by Neil Gaiman and a variety of artists (co-created by Sam Keith). This series is sometimes stunningly faithful to the comic, but there are some changes - some subtle, some aesthetic - that stick in our craws. We also talk about my tragic history of shoplifting, some comic book movie news and whether or not Derek wants a pet. The main discussion begins at 23:07. You may have noticed this episode is dropping on a different day of the week than normal - that's because Marvel is going to be releasing She-Hulk: Attorney at Law on Thursdays, which means our whole recording schedule bumps back a day. We are discussing a brand new series with our chat about Neil Gaiman's The Sandman Chapter 1 "Sleep of the Just" on Netflix. We will be discussing each episode of the series in spoiler filled detail. The Sandman Chapter 1 "Sleep Of The Just" Details Episode Directed by Mike Barker Teleplay for this episode written by Neil Gaiman, David S. Goyer and Allan Heinberg In 1916 in the Realm of Dreams, Morpheus, the king of dreams and nightmares, learns of the escaped nightmare “The Corinthian” and travels to Berlin to confront him and stop his murdering spree. Meanwhile in Wych Cross England, Roderick Burgess makes a pact with Dr John Hathaway to capture one of the Endless, Death, to compel her to return their lost sons. But the incantation doesn't work as expected and they trap another of the Endless, Morpheus. Dragged from his confrontation with the Corinthian and trapped, Dream silently vows vengeance on Roderick Burgess. With guidance from The Corinthian, who wants to keep Dream trapped, Roderick uses the power of Morpheus's powerful Helm, Ruby and pouch of sand to make his dreams come true. Over decades Roderick bargains and rages with Morpheus to bring back his son. Failing that to give him power, wealth and immortality. But Morpheus remains silent. Roderick's younger son, Alex Burgess, will do anything to impress his father, including killing the Raven guardian of Morpheus, Jessemy. This is unforgivable but still Morpheus remains silent. As the years pass, the frustration in the Burgess family overflows and Alex accidently kills his father. But in the aftermath Alex finds a new love, Paul and they spend many more years trying to convince Morpheus to leave without hurting them. But Morpheus remains silent. After a century in captivity and without a word spoken, Paul breaks the incantation which bound Morpheus and, before finally returning to his realm, he punishes Alex, forcing him into eternal sleep. When Morpheus arrives back to the land of dreams he is met by his librarian, Lucienne, who reveals that the realm has changed without the King of Dreams. Most of the dreams and nightmares have left and the land is in disrepair. But Dream built this place before and he is resolved to build it once again. Today's storyteller is Dr Clay Tucker! Clay is a tree ring scientist, also known as a dendrochronologist, and his specialty is related to hurricanes and climate change. I could have called this episode "Dendrochronology" but probably most people have no idea what that would mean and I didn't want to detract from this fabulous episode!! So trees grow and add rings every year, so by taking a small core of the tree you get a visual representation of that tree's life, essentially. And you can see the impact of droughts, hurricanes, and disease on the growth of that tree over time. In Clay's research, he's used tree rings from pine trees across the southeastern US to understand the impacts of hurricanes. It's fascinating research and why I asked Clay to be on the podcast! Clay and I are both in Baton Rouge, and know a lot of the same people, and so we talk about that and relationships within science, about how technology in this era allows for collaboration across continents and time zones, about what I call the "Louisiana Quicksand Conundrum", about learning to read the landscape, and of course about trees and wetlands and research. This is such a fun conversation and Clay is great and I hope everyone enjoys it! --- You can find Rachel Villani on Twitter @flyingcypress and Storytellers of STEMM on Facebook and Twitter @storytellers42. https://linktr.ee/oopsallmonsters Gavin unleashes  MTV's cutest cannibalistic trauma baubles, the impish minions of Mr Gone. They're relentless, they're multitudinous, they're unscrupulous, they are: THE ISZ.  In the mid-90s illustrator and comic artist Sam Keith scraped together the chance to create a graphic novel of singular personal vision. In THE MAXX he depicted a twisted, grim-dark America populated by nightmarish creatures lurking in every shadow, and sensitive souls trying to navigate deadly villains, as well as the hallucinatory invasions of their own trauma and mental illness.  Gavin posits his theories as to the ultimate meaning of The Isz, and the complexity of communicating psychological injury through media, as well as juxtaposing the mental anguish of Keith's THE MAXX with David Cronenberg's CRASH, even as Hess describes David Spader as "the guy from Mannequin".

The series revolves around the story of Lucifer Morningstar (played by Tom Ellis) the Devil, who was condemned to rule hell for all eternity after attempting to stage a rebellion in Heaven... until he decides to take a vacation in Los Angeles where he runs his own nightclub named 'LUX' as well as becoming a consultant for the LAPD. The series also focuses of Lucifer's connection and his relationship with Dectective Chloe Decker (played by Lauren German) and the mystery of why she is not susceptible to his gift of drawing out peoples' hidden desires. The series also stars Kevin Alejandro as Detective Daniel "Dan" Espinoza, D.B. Woodside as Amenadiel, Lesley-Ann Brandt as Mazikeen, and Rachael Harris as Dr. Linda Martin. The series first three series premiered on Fox, until it was cancelled - but now all three seasons can now be streamed on Amazon Prime in the UK, and all the seasons afterwards can be streamed on Netflix worldwide. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

Today’s Hook: You are pursuing a vigilante who is killing city guards. The guards all have the same tattoo. (Game Hook #326 by Critical Dice on Instagram) Admittedly, most Adventure Hook episodes are kind of Halloween episodes. Nevertheless… this time it’s actuallyHalloween! So let’s get right to the spooky… The Adventure Hook guys start this holiday episode off with some delightfully campy old skool slasher mayhem and follow that up with a dose of some secret society creepy criminal cultish chaos… and then skip right past all that stuff and go darker than ever before by delving into some seriously real concepts of horror. A few of them end up becoming so intense that the guys end up needing a pallet cleanser, and so circle back around again to a much safer (yet still quite spooooky) Trick-or-Treat scenario for a charming Halloween themed game… again, at least to start with! Yet long after the episode ends… those horrors imagined in the town of South Alem will likely linger on with the listener still… Did Adventure Hook finally go too far this time? For some people, it’s quite possible. Whether it’s a True Detective inspired Southern Gothic-style the Crucible meets Cthulhu or an 80’s satanic panic kids on bikes-style Willy Wonka meets Halloween III, you’re in for the most nightmarish of mashup episodes imaginable. But, then again… too much additional explanation here simply risks spoiling the show. Banter Topic:  Our favorite holiday is here once more, and to celebrate the spookiest of days we skip right past the stacks of pennies and raisin boxes of bantering, and crunch right through such superficial candy coatings to get right to the teeth-rottenly sweet nougaty center of the Adventure Hook show… story development.
