Während in „Get Out“ und auch noch in „US“ der Humor eine wichtige Komponente war, ist „Nope“ wesentlich ernsthafter und dadurch mitunter auch etwas schwerfälliger. Ein großer Film ist dieses Werk dennoch. Nicht nur erweist er Klassikern wie „Unheimliche Begegnung der dritten Art“ und „Arrival“ seine Reverenz, er kann gerade durch diese Verweise seine kulturkritische Aussage unterstreichen. Die Menschen heute begegnen den Außerirdischen nicht mehr mit einem Erkenntnisinteresse, sondern nur noch mit der Frage: Wie kann ich aus dem Spektakel Profit machen? Daniel Kaluuya als OJ und Keke Palmer als dessen Schwester Em wollen auf ihrer Ranch Pferde für den Film trainieren, jedoch ist das Geschäft aufgrund der CGI-Technik schon lange nicht mehr sonderlich lukrativ. Schnell kommen sie auf die Idee, mit Aufnahmen von UFOs reich zu werden. Gefahndet wird nach dem „Oprah-Shot“ – nach der Aufnahme, die einem die Tür zu der sensationslüsternen Talkshow öffnet.
