There are a lot of ways to answer this question and the Brothers consider them all during a tribute to the late movie star, who passed away recently at the age of 65. The Brothers dig into the appeal of Kilmer as an actor and explore his most memorable and unique performances, his contributions to 1990s cinema, his approach to method acting, and his theatricality as an actor. Finishing Passover and Easter this month, I reminisced the first movie I heard of Val Kilmer as he passed away 4/1. Dreamworks released animated religious film The Prince of Egypt in 1998, based on the Bible's Book of Exodus - 40 Chapters, and 1956 movie The Ten Commandments. Along with an all-star cast, Val Kilmer starred as Moses and the voice of God. I summarize the epic movie and soundtrack in this episode. Send us a textStepping back into ancient Egypt, we explore DreamWorks Animation's biblical epic "The Prince of Egypt" (1998) – a film that masterfully blends breathtaking animation with powerful storytelling to bring the Exodus narrative to life. This cinematic journey through Moses' story features a truly remarkable voice cast that surprised even our hosts. Val Kilmer pulls double duty as both Moses and God (creating a fascinating dynamic during the burning bush scene), while stars like Ralph Fiennes, Jeff Goldblum, Patrick Stewart, Sandra Bullock, Helen Mirren, and the comedy duo of Steve Martin and Martin Short bring depth and personality to this ancient tale. The revelation of who voiced which character had our hosts pausing the movie in amazement! What truly sets this film apart is its visual artistry. Twenty-five years later, the animation still captivates with its blend of traditional 2D techniques and subtle 3D elements. From the haunting sequence of baby Moses floating down the Nile to the spectacular parting of the Red Sea, the film's artistic vision creates moments of genuine awe. We discuss how specific scenes – like the transformation of water to blood that spares Moses himself – demonstrate the filmmakers' exceptional attention to detail and creative interpretation of biblical miracles. While the film takes creative liberties with its source material (Moses was supposedly 80 years old during the Exodus!), we explore how these changes serve the narrative while maintaining the spiritual essence of the story. We even delve into fascinating historical theories about which actual Egyptian pharaoh might have ruled during these events – was it really Ramesses II as depicted, or perhaps the mysterious Dudimose whose reign coincided with Egypt's decline?Have you revisited this animated masterpiece recently? We'd love to hear your thoughts! Leave us a five-star review or join the conversation about biblical adaptations, animation techniques, or which scene still gives you chills decades later.Twitter handles:Project Geekology: https://twitter.com/pgeekologyAnthony's Twitter: https://twitter.com/odysseyswowDakota's Twitter: https://twitter.com/geekritique_dakInstagram:https://instagram.com/projectgeekology?igshid=1v0sits7ipq9yYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@projectgeekologyGeekritique (Dakota):https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBwciIqOoHwIx_uXtYTSEbATwitch (Anthony):https://www.twitch.tv/odysseywowSupport the show
"Let my people Goooo!!" — the iconic words from the chosen one, Moses. This week on Episode 149, we're diving deep into The Prince of Egypt. Huge shoutout to our homies Furb and Jada for pulling up and joining us for this one. We tackled some wild questions during the discussion — like, who actually built the pyramids? Would Pharaoh have let the slaves go after the work was done? And here's the real curveball: Was Moses the true villain of the film? From the powerful message to the unforgettable soundtrack, we break down what made this animated epic so impactful. We also dig into whether the story was truly based on real events. Things definitely got dark — plagues, famines, frogs everywhere — but we survived it all and even walked through the ocean (okay, metaphorically) to get to the heart of it all, "Was It Good Though?"
Noget så særligt som en dansk-udviklet, international musical; det er lige hvad "The Prince of Egypt" er! Men lever den op til den fænomenale tegnefilm, dem er baseret på? Det undersøger vi i dagens afsnit.

Just in time for Passover, hosts Harry and Daniel are joined by Stephanie Butnick—creator of Golda, the Jewish culture guide—for a spirited conversation about The Prince of Egypt (1998), DreamWorks' dazzling and dramatic take on the Exodus story. The trio dives into the film's stunning animation, unforgettable music, and deeply Jewish themes, while also paying tribute to the late, great Val Kilmer—who voiced both Moses and God (talk about range!).Along the way, they unpack midrashic moments, sibling rivalry, and why this animated epic remains a Seder-season staple for so many Jewish households. In timeless prose, Jane Yolen shares the story of Moses, "The Prince of Egypt". In the divided land of Egypt some are masters and the rest are slaves, While the queen and her handmaidens bathe in the water gardens, the Hebrews toil under the hot sun, building a great empire. Pharaoh's sons race their chariots through the city, destroying a month's work in a careless minute. And ruling over them all is Pharaoh, a man of dreadful power. Prince Moses is proud to be Pharaoh's son and Rameses' beloved brother. But soon he will discover that his life is a lie. He will learn how a Hebrew slave -- his birth mother -- set him adrift in a basket to save his life. And in this truth, Moses will find his destiny. For God has chosen him to lead the Hebrew people out of Egypt.to freedom.

Grab your popcorn! "The Prince of Egypt" is an epic animated adaptation of Moses's story, and we're about to dissect it scene by scene. This film has stood the test of time, from casting to cinematography to music, all of which we discuss in depth. We wrap up the episode by reflecting on the theological implications of the Exodus story: our fear of becoming who God wants us to be, our inner turmoil when processing an Old Testament plague-sending God, and the ever-present dangers of hardening our hearts as Pharaoh did. Traditionally, Egyptian princes are almost invisible. The pharaohs downplayed the presence of their sons, to reduce political competition and maintain religious order. Sety I (c.1300 BCE) changed this habit. In art and monuments, he promoted young Ramesses II to a position of prominence and power. The exact nature of this promotion is slightly controversial among Egyptologists. In this episode, we explore Ramesses' rise and some of the thorny issues. Additionally, Prof. Peter Brand joins us to discuss some of the harder questions on these period. Peter Brand, The Monuments of Sety I (2000), available free at Academia.edu. Katie and Bridget hide from the plagues as they re-watch the movie: The Prince of Egypt! It's a story all about how God is voiced by Val Kilmer and while he can do wonders, he can also be really friggon scary! Come along as we meet Moses, the original baby floating down the river, who gets adopted by the Pharoah queen and raised as Egyptian royalty alongside his new brother Rameses. When Moses grows up he learns that he's actually one of the Hebrews that was saved from his adopted dad's baby slaughter - seriously there was an entire giant mural all about it! This leads him to abandon his life, go get married in the desert, raise some sheep, and eventually talk to God via burning bush (hold ya jokes please!). Moses sets off to save the slaves in Egypt via lots of messed up stuff and deaths. Lots and lots of deaths... But thankfully, the songs are bangers! Released in 1998, it stars an insane cast including: Val Kilmer, Ralph Fiennes, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sandra Bullock, Jeff Goldblum, Danny Glover, Patrick Stewart, Helen Mirren, Steve Martin, and Martin Short.
