https://www.facebook.com/groups/dailystridespodcastRight now, it's tempting to turn to AI for everything, even in the saddle! Ask a question, get an instant answer. But when it comes to training horses and improving your riding, is that really helping you grow? In this episode of Sunday Strides, Lorna shares a straight-talking perspective on how more riders are using AI as a shortcut, and how that shortcut can quietly take you off course. If you've found yourself relying on AI-generated plans or “quick fixes” to solve riding problems, this is your reminder: riding isn't about perfect answers - it's about awareness, feel, and growth. Lorna also shares 3 smart and intentional ways you can start using AI this week to support your riding journey, and why it's all about asking better questions, not getting the perfect answers.
In this Strides Revisited episode, we're returning to one of the most powerful mindset shifts in riding - the moment when you stop trying to control your horse's every move… and start asking with clarity instead. This episode takes a fresh look at leg yielding; not just as a lateral movement, but as a powerful training tool to refine how you use your aids and communicate with your horse. Whether you're rebuilding your confidence or looking to sharpen your lateral work, this is where the shift begins. In this episode, you'll learn: Why pushing = resistance - and what to do instead How to create “open doors” with your seat and reins to show your horse where to go The importance of timing your aids with how your horse is actually moving How feedback builds a conversation (and trust) between you and your horse
Have you ever felt like you're doing “all the right things” in the saddle - yet not really making progress? Chances are, there might be a few riding shortcuts sneaking into your sessions. And if you're training without a regular instructor… those shortcuts can go unnoticed for weeks or even months. That's where Pivo comes in. In this episode, I'm sharing three of the most common shortcuts riders take—and how using Pivo to film short clips of your rides can help you spot, fix, and finally move past them. Whether you ride alone or just want to get more from your time in the saddle, this episode will show you how to turn video into your most trusted training partner.
Have you ever wished you could fast-forward three rides ahead to see exactly what you'd do differently? In this week's Sunday Strides, Lorna turns that fantasy into a practical tool: using short video reviews as your “time-travel” coach. Learn how to pause your ride, watch it “from the future,” then hop back in the saddle and apply those insights immediately—so every session becomes a step toward smarter, smoother progress.
Struggling with unbalanced, rushed, or messy canter transitions? You're not alone. And the good news is, it doesn't have to stay this way. In this episode of Strides Revisited (from 2020) of the Daily Strides Podcast for Equestrians, I'm sharing 3 practical steps you can implement on your very next ride to dramatically improve your canter transitions. Whether you're riding alone in a back paddock or schooling in an arena, these simple mindset and position shifts will help you plan better, ride with more clarity, and finally allow your horse to move freely into the canter. This is a must-listen for any rider who has ever felt like they were catapulted into canter… or worse, ended up rushing into it with no balance or connection.
Ever feel like your riding instantly improves when someone's watching? You sit up straighter, ride with more intention, and suddenly even your transitions are cleaner… But what if you don't have anyone to watch you ride? The good news? You do. Your camera and your future self are ready to become your new training partners - starting today. In this episode of the Daily Strides Podcast, we're diving into the power of video, not just filming your rides, but reviewing them in a way that gives you clear, honest feedback and a clear next step. This isn't about judgment. It's about awareness, growth, and making your time in the saddle truly count, especially if you're training alone without a regular instructor or coach.
This week's Sunday Strides is a personal one. Lorna reflects on how a smaller riding space at her new farm initially felt limiting but ultimately sparked creativity and growth in her training approach. Whether you're dealing with time constraints, health issues, or limited resources, this episode encourages you to view these challenges as opportunities to explore new facets of your riding journey. Because real riders aren't the ones with perfect conditions - they're the ones who adapt, innovate, and keep moving forward.
This Strides Revisited episode from 2020 calls riders out (lovingly!) on wasting time in the saddle and challenges you to make every moment with your horse count. Whether you're riding solo, stuck in a rut, or returning after time off, this episode will help you reignite your purpose, get clear on your riding goals, and build a plan that fits your life. Not someone else's (or potentially a past version of you?) expectations.
If you're a rider working without a trainer or instructor, this episode is for you. Because yes - you can absolutely improve your riding while training alone. In this episode of the Daily Strides Podcast, we're moving on from our Rider Basics series by getting deeper into strategies to use when riding alone. Today, we're diving into five simple yet powerful strategies that will help you make consistent progress, even when you're riding by yourself. These tips are practical, accessible, and completely doable — whether you're in a proper arena or just making the most of your back paddock.
This week's Sunday Strides is a personal one. Lorna reflects on a recent experience that reminded her just how uncomfortable it can feel to learn something new - especially as an adult. Whether it's learning how to use new tech (hello, Pivo
If you feel like something is “off” in your riding, but you can't quite put your finger on it, this episode is for you... We're going back to basics and revisiting the key areas of your riding position that may be holding you back. The reality? Even just one small fault in your seat, leg, or upper body can create a domino effect that impacts your entire ride—and your horse's ability to understand you. This is a foundational episode for every rider. Especially if you're returning to riding, feeling stuck in your progress, or working without an instructor. Get the FULL article and all of the links HERE https://stridesforsuccess.com/episode1026 In this episode, you'll learn: ✅ Why your position matters more than you think — especially when training alone ✅ How your seat bones influence communication with your horse ✅ The common leg faults (like gripping and clamping) and how to correct them ✅ The head–shoulder–hip–heel line and how to use it to assess your own alignment ✅ A simple trick for spotting tension in your knees ✅ How your head, shoulders, and arms can either stabilize or sabotage your ride ✅ The importance of the elbow–rein–bit line for soft, effective communication ✅ Why rider fitness plays a bigger role than you realize—and what to do about it You'll walk away with actionable insights you can take into the saddle today to feel more balanced, more secure, and more effective in your riding.
Feeling overwhelmed in the saddle by everything you think you need to fix? Whether you're a novice rider or returning after time out of the saddle, this episode will help you break free from the frustrating cycle of overthinking and overcorrecting. Instead of trying to improve everything at once, what if you focused on just one thing — the first domino that, when shifted, creates a ripple effect throughout the rest of your ride? In this episode, I'm sharing how to identify your own “riding domino,” why mastering the basics isn't just for beginners, and how one focused ride can do more for your progress than weeks of scattershot effort.
Have you ever felt frustrated because what used to work in your riding, your training, or even your schedule - suddenly just… doesn't? You're not alone. In this episode of Sunday Strides, Lorna shares why it's normal (and even a positive sign!) when old systems stop fitting your current life - and why learning to adapt is the key to lasting progress in your riding journey. Change isn't a problem - it's a signal that you're growing. Whether you're adjusting your training approach for your horse, your own riding schedule, or your life outside the saddle, embracing new strategies can help you find flow, confidence, and joy again.
If your horse's trot feels a little "meh" - and not the light, airy, expressive movement you dream of - you might unknowingly be the one getting in the way... In this encore episode, we're revisiting one of the most powerful conversations you can have with your horse: how your seat can either create space for better movement - or accidentally block it. Many riders think that once they master the basic rising trot, they can move on. But if you want true influence, softness, and connection, you need to dive deeper - starting with how you move with the trot, not against it. In this episode, you'll discover: Why a trot is never just a trot — and how to unlock its hidden potential The "bit in the middle" you must feel and create for more space and suspension 2 easy exercises ("Up, Up, Down" and "Down, Down, Up") to reveal whether you're influencing or blocking Why more energy doesn't mean faster — and how to manage tempo without losing balance Signs that your seat might be the bottleneck in your horse's progress Simple off-the-horse steps to improve your suppleness, balance, and influence
There's nothing quite like the satisfaction of finally 'getting' the rising trot as a beginner rider… But what if the way you first found success—your trusty “up downs”—is now what's holding you back? In this episode, we're exploring how the rising trot evolves far beyond rhythm and balance. I'm breaking down how posting to the trot is actually a tool—one that can either help or hinder your horse's movement and training, depending on how you're doing it. Because yes, there's a better way—and it all starts with YOU.
This week didn't go as planned. And if yours didn't either - you're not alone. In this episode of Sunday Strides, I'm sharing what I do when life throws everything off course. From illness and exhaustion to just plain overwhelm, we all face moments where our riding plans feel impossible to follow through on. But here's the key: One bad day doesn't mean the whole week is a write-off. Sometimes, the best thing we can do is regroup instead of retreat.
Do you ever feel like your hands are sending mixed signals to your horse? If you've been trying to improve your contact, connection, or communication in the saddle - but things still feel off - this Strides Revisited episode is for you. Originally aired in February 2025 as Episode 1137, this conversation dives into four of the most common (and sneaky!) ways your hands may be unintentionally causing confusion while you ride. Whether it's fidgeting, flapping, or just plain floating... It's time to find your ‘Goldilocks' hands - just right
Do your hands seem to have a mind of their own when you're riding? You're not alone—and the good news is, unsteady hands aren't usually the real issue. They're often a symptom of deeper balance, stability, or position problems in your riding. Whether you find yourself constantly shortening your reins or unintentionally using your hands for balance, this episode will help you understand what's actually causing your unsteady hands and how to finally develop steadier, softer communication with your horse. Read the full article on this HERE https://stridesforsuccess.com/episode1365-steady-hands-as-you-ride-your-horse In This Episode of the Daily Strides Podcast, You'll Discover: ✅ Why steady hands are essential for clear, kind communication with your horse ✅ How your elbows directly influence your hand stability (and what to do about it!) ✅ Why relying on your hands for balance is causing bigger problems in your riding ✅ Practical off-horse exercises to build core strength and hand stability ✅ How improving the connection between your seat and hands will transform your riding
Welcome to the very first episode of Sunday Strides – the new weekly series from the Daily Strides Podcast designed to get your mindset right before the week begins. These episodes are short (under 5 minutes), unscripted, and packed with the motivation, truth, and tough love you need to get back in the saddle—even when it's not perfect. In this episode, we're talking about the trap of waiting for the “perfect time” to ride and why that's costing you real progress with your horse. Because here's the truth: You don't need a perfect plan. You need to just get on.
Do you ever feel like the more effort you put into canter, the worse your seat becomes? You're not alone... In this encore episode of the Daily Strides Podcast, we're revisiting a popular lesson: Developing Your Seat in the Canter. Originally aired in March 2020, it's packed with timeless insights for riders who feel stuck, disconnected, or frustrated in the canter. This episode will help you: Understand the difference between following and forcing in the canter Use the "clothes hanger" analogy to create true postural alignment Recognize how shoulder tension and over-efforting are sabotaging your seat Learn why carrying yourself is step one in developing a supple, effective seat Discover how to use the half-halt with your seat—without blocking your horse Whether you're a returning rider, a bit rusty, or just ready to upgrade your seat… this episode is your starting point. Have you ever noticed your lower leg swinging like a windscreen wiper while you're trotting or cantering? You're not alone—and here's the good news: your swinging lower leg is not the real problem. It's a symptom of something deeper going on in your riding. Whether your horse is tuning you out… or rocketing off when you didn't mean to ask for more—this episode will help you understand what's actually causing the instability and how to finally fix your swinging lower leg in a way that lasts. Read the full blog post HERE https://stridesforsuccess.com/episode1364-securing-your-swinging-lower-leg-in-trot-and-canter In This Episode of the Daily Strides Podcast, You'll Discover: ✅ Why your lower leg swinging is rarely the actual problem ✅ What to check in your rising/posting trot technique that could be causing the swing ✅ How your shoulders in canter are secretly sabotaging your leg stability ✅ What to do instead of "holding" your leg still (spoiler: that doesn't work!) ✅ The missing link between your seat, balance, and leg aids that could change everything

Have you ever found yourself mid-ride thinking, “Wait… what am I doing right now?” Maybe your heels are creeping up, your reins have slipped, or your posture's gone missing… You're not alone. And more importantly - you're already riding on autopilot. The key is making sure that what's on autopilot is actually moving you and your horse forward. In this episode of the Daily Strides Podcast, I'm breaking down how to reset your riding habits, step by step. These are simple shifts you can start using right away to ride more intentionally — and confidently.
Join the Returning to Riding Waitlist at https://returningtoriding.com How often have you felt overwhelmed about remembering and doing all of the things when it comes to your riding? Perhaps you find yourself looking at more experienced riders and wondering "How do they do it?". Maybe you feel at a loss because "As soon as I start with something different, it all falls apart.". Or for you it could just be "I just can't remember to do all of the things at the same time!!!". This is a very real part of the riding journey for all riders. It's a phase you have to go through if you want to improve and succeed as a 'rider'. Take a deep breath, because you're definitely not alone. In fact, feeling overwhelmed, especially when you're still learning all of the things is a natural part of the riding journey. Every single rider—yes, even those more experienced riders you admire—has faced these exact frustrations. One of the key differences between struggling riders and those who appear effortlessly successful comes down to one key thing: putting better habits on autopilot - and your thoughts can help you do just that... Join the Returning to Riding Waitlist at https://returningtoriding.com Have you ever noticed how quickly things can shift from good to tense during a ride? One moment you're feeling relaxed and confident, and the next, you realize that your shoulders have crept up to your ears, your hands are gripping onto those reins for dear life, and, maybe, you've forgotten to breath for a few seconds too long! Rather than just accepting that your body is doing it's own thing - and not what you want, this is the perfect opportunity to begin asking yourself "What's going on here?". "What thought caused this reaction in my body?" Because, while you might think that these things just happen; leaning forward on every canter transition, or curling up like a hamster when a dog barks while out for a hack; they are a reaction. Your body is reacting to your thoughts about the situation. Yes, these physical responses aren't random—they're usually triggered by your thoughts. Thoughts that we often don't even realize we are having! Today, we're going to explore how to identify these unhelpful thoughts and, importantly, how you can shift them to create positive change in your riding. Join the Returning to Riding Waitlist:- https://returningtoriding.com Imagine if there was something you could actively ‘do' every moment you're in the saddle that would almost guarantee that you're in the ‘right place at the right time'. There is. It involves abiding by the 'Click Your Fingers Rule' regarding your position. And look, I get it: talking about your position is not fun or exciting. But it is 100% one of the BEST ways to improve your skills as a rider. When you are in the right place at the right time to effectively and clearly communicate with your horse, it stands to reason that the overall connection and quality of the work will improve. Your position is so important, and applying the Click Your Fingers Rule will help you develop true balance and independence in the saddle. It's one of the key elements that allows a rider to transition from being a passenger to truly riding their horse. Join the Returning to Riding Waitlist:- https://returningtoriding.com You hop into the saddle, ready for a great ride. But before you know it, you've spent most of the session adjusting your hands, correcting your position, and just ‘fixing' yourself. All while your horse just plods along! Sound familiar? Don't worry, you're not alone... Ask yourself this: Where is the majority of your attention or focus when you ride? Think back to the very last schooling session with your horse with you in the saddle. Maybe you had a lesson, or perhaps it was just you and your horse working together alone. Who did you focus more on: you and your position, aids, tension, etc., or your horse and how well he was working? There comes a point for most riders when they realize that they spend more time focusing on themselves in each training session. Fixing, correcting, reminding themselves to do or be a certain way... This is the 'passenger' phase of your horse-riding journey. And while all riders must initially go through it, the challenge comes when they unknowingly get stuck there! It's when you're focusing so much of your energy in 'fixing' yourself that you're not actually riding the horse! You're simply 'sitting there'. So, if you've been feeling like 80% of your time in the saddle is spent 'fixing' and correcting yourself - this article and episode will help you to begin making the shift from passenger to rider. 50+ Ideas to do With Your Horse in 15 Minutes or Less HERE https://stridesforsuccess.com/15 Riders stop riding for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes, it's a conscious choice; an injury, a change in circumstances, or a loss of confidence for example. Other times, life simply gets in the way. But whatever the reason, it doesn't have to define your riding journey going forward. You're maybe like many other riders, the reason that you've stopped was just a season of life—a temporary chapter, not the whole story. And yet, it's easy to take that reason and make it mean something about who you are. You, intentionally or not, weave it into your entire identity, convincing yourself that you're no longer a “real rider.” But here's the truth: “The reason you stopped riding is just that—a reason, not a definition. It's a chapter that's now ending - not the whole story! Getting back in the saddle can feel uncomfortable, even when you want it more than anything. And I'm not just talking about physical discomfort. Often the mental challenges are even more real. This can be because your mind has grown used to its old story. The one where riding is no longer a part of your life. But that story isn't set in stone. You can rewrite it—starting today... 50+ Ideas for when You've 15 Minutes or Less with Your Horse FREE HERE Have you been allowing your goal of 'doing things right' to suck the joy and fun out of horse riding for you? Maybe you've been wanting to get back into riding after a long break, but you stop yourself because things are not 100% perfect. There's a time and a place for perfection. Every single moment that you're interacting with your horse is NOT that time! Today, I want to encourage you to let go of perfection. Release the pressure you're putting on yourself and your horse for everything to be amazing. And just be present and enjoy the moment - warts and all! Have you ever watched children playing and noticed how much pure fun they usually have? They are not worried about 'playing the correct way' or 'doing it the right way'. They are simply there, at the moment, enjoying it as it all unfolds before them. Here's how to begin approaching your riding and interactions with your horse the same way... 50+ Ideas for 15 Minutes or Less with Your Horse - Download for Free HERE As riders, we can often have a very negative association with tension. Yet, without it, neither you nor your horse would remain upright! Take away the tension and both of you will go limp and become a 'dead weight' immediately. So, instead of seeing tension as the enemy - it's key to begin reshaping your understanding and your 'practice' of tension. You must begin managing your tension. Tension is absolutely 100% essential for both you and your horse. It's the presence of too much or excessive tension that causes the issues... Tension management is often called relaxation when it is related to horses and riding. And, just like tension, many riders don't really understand the concept of relaxation as it pertains to riding and training horses. I don't want to go too deep into relaxation today (there is a previous post and episode on that HERE). What's important to understand about tension and relaxation is that it's not just about the horse. This principle is equally as important for the rider to understand and develop throughout their own body. In this episode of the Daily Strides Podcast, I will help you to begin developing more tension management throughout your body by beginning with creating 'calm' for both you and your horse. You will do this through your own actions and thoughts while working with your horse. Read Full Article & All Links HERE https://stridesforsuccess.com/episode1352-has-tension-been-holding-you-back-in-your-riding The Energy Connection There are so many different ways and exercises you can use to help develop a more positive energetic connection with your horse. Get the FREE audio guide to help you and your horse successfully lunge in 3 days or less HERE If lunging is just not working for you and your horse, there is a whole element that you are missing out on when it comes to your training and your work together. In the previous Daily Strides Podcast episode and post, I spoke about 5 ways that you, the person lunging, might be struggling. In this post, I want to explore this from your horse's perspective. Riding is a team sport, lunging is the same. If your horse does not understand the concept, the questions, or the expectations around lunging, he will struggle... And you will most likely as well! Here are 10 reasons that your horse might be struggling with lunging and why this is blocking any progress for you both in using this method in your work together. Read the Full Article HERE https://stridesforsuccess.com/episode1350-5-reasons-youre-struggling-with-lunging-part-2 Help Your Horse Enjoy Lunging Our horses can't 'talk' to us. They often communicate through their behaviors. It's important to take the time to try and understand why your horse is reacting or responding the way he is. When you can figure out what's going on, you can help him to understand lunging. Addressing any of the struggles that show up will require clear, consistent communication, patience, and commitment with time to building your horse's confidence and understanding. This way, lunging can become a really helpful part of both of your journeys. Hands up if, at some point in your riding journey, you've been guilty of thinking that lunging was a simple matter of your horse going in circles. Don't feel bad, I've been there too. Most riders have, and so many still are! Lunging is so much more than just running in circles. It is an amazing way to connect with your horse and compliment or continue with your training when riding. Like most worthwhile things, it takes time, practice, and improving your skills to get the most from lunging. It's not something that just magically 'happens'. Between getting tangled in the lines to missed communication between you and your horse, lunging is an art. It's like riding. So when you approach it that way, you can begin to improve :) In this episode and post, I will focus on 5 common challenges that riders have when it comes to lunging. Now, Obviously, I say riders; I mean 'lungers', as in you on the ground in the circle with your horse trying to lunge :) Read the Full Article & Listen HERE https://stridesforsuccess.com/episode1349-5-reasons-youre-struggling-with-lunging-part1 Stop Struggling with Lunging! Get Information on Virtual Horse Riding Lessons HERE Working alone without a regular instructor or trainer is tough. And often it's the 'little things' that become the bigger sticking points for riders. Things like staying accountable, using feedback to make tweaks and changes, and creating a regular schedule filled with exercises and activities to move things forward. But all is not lost... It is still possible to move things forward - and reviewing your riding videos is a big part of that. I have already given you the 5 things to look for when reviewing your own riding and performance in a previous post HERE. Today I want to give you 5 things to focus on when reviewing your horse. Creating regular riding videos will allow you to be your own feedback person. The key is to simply document and make note of what's happening - without attaching any judgement Your Horse is Not You... So often, as riders, we can fall into the trap of 'seeing' our horse and our own body as 1 when watching videos of our riding. And yes, the idea is that you are moving and working together as 1. However, in order to make that happen, each individual must first become good at their part of the work. And that requires you to separate the reviewing. Review yourself first and then turn your attention to your horse. This way you will get a clearer overall picture of whats going on and what needs work individually for you both. When you're working alone without a regular trainer or instructor, you must begin to create ways for self-review. Video is, hands down, the best way to do this, especially if your camera follows you. Automated motion tracking software makes this an affordable possibility for many riders now. But even if you don't have this technology, you can still simply use your phone, hit record, and ride. By creating regular riding videos where you are asking similar questions, riding similar movements, and reviewing them consistently, you create your own feedback. Similar to what a trainer or instructor would do in the arena. However, the key to making this technique work for you is to figure out what to look for. Just watching the videos is not enough. Many riders get caught up in simply looking at the video passively. Imagine if your instructor did that in the arena when working together?! I doubt that you would learn a whole lot, improve, or be very happy with the outcome! If you're reviewing your own riding videos, you need to act like your instructor or trainer. Look for specific things, for both you and your horse. And do this without judgment or criticism. In fact, you want to actually 'find' areas to improve, change, or clean up. Just like an instructor or trainer would... When it comes to horses, riding, and training rhythm is often misunderstood and taken for granted. I think this is because horses are generally good at creating a pattern, but also, we tend to simply accept the first version of rhythm that's served up to us! And while that version will certainly be a pattern, it's the quality we need to begin paying attention to. A good quality rhythm can dramatically transform a lot when it comes to riding and training your horse; it's well worth your time, attention, and effort to improve. In this episode of the Daily Strides Podcast, I will help you to understand rhythm as it relates to your horse. How to know if you're simply accepting what's there, and how you can begin to improve it for you both as well. However, this bond, for many riders, takes time to develop and strengthen. This is because building a connection with your horse takes more than just time in the saddle. It requires attention. As well as understanding, patience, and a deep respect for the unique partnership you're creating. In this episode of the Daily Strides Podcast, I want to give you some practical steps you can use to strengthen the connection with your horse. Find out more about Daily Strides Premium HERE https://stridesforsuccess.com/dsp Being on a horse who is determined to run as fast as he possibly can towards every pole, fence, or jump that he sees is nerve-wracking! There are many reasons your horse might do this. And assuming that you have ruled out discomfort or pain, then retraining can begin. Unfortunately, retraining a horse who has become practiced in rushing jumps is a long and slow process. It requires time and consistency. And often requires the rider to make some changes as well. In this episode, plucked directly from Daily Strides Premium, we will focus on you, the rider. My goal here is to help you identify where you might just be 'enabling' or even encouraging your horse's tendency for rushing jumps! I know this sounds a little bananas, but it happens more often than you think! This is an audio horse riding lesson and can be listened to as you ride your horse to help you become more aware of what you are doing in the saddle and how this may be influencing your horse. This episode is the first lesson from a week of audio horse riding lessons titled "Re-Schooling the Basics for Both Horse & Rider on the Flat". In this group of lessons, we begin working towards re-training a horse who is rushing fences by working on the basic aids, responsiveness and, equally as important, how the rider thinks. Remember, re-shooling a horse usually also involves re-training the rider to think and act differently. The horse will respond better if the rider changes their approach and is consistently correct in what they are doing and asking…. These lessons will help you to develop better habits and responses. What would happen if you went 'all in' on one specific area of training or developing with your horse for the next 90 or so days? If you laser focus every interaction to support and strengthen the thing you want to improve or make happen? As I'm writing this, there are about 90 days left in the year, which ties in nicely with goals, etc. However, whenever you're reading or listening to this, I want to encourage you today to begin your own 90-day journey with your horse... Starting today. Two things are absolutely essential for successfully training and developing horses and riders; time and consistency. 90 days is the timeframe for this particular focus or intention. Consistency is how you show up and the actions you take, over and over again. And if consistency is a challenge for you, remember that you are almost certain to be consistent with things. It's just the wrong things or actions that you're being consistent with! This can help you and your horse when you get back into the arena. As with all things in horse riding, the level of training you and your horse find yourself at when listening to this episode will dictate what you can reasonably expect to achieve. In this episode of the Daily Strides Podcast, I am encouraging you to listen while riding and immediately put the training into practice. We will be taking an imaginary ride 'together'... How often do you get out on the trail with your horse? There are no right or wrong answers to this question. However, I find it interesting how most riders fall into 2 categories when it comes to trail riding or hacking with their horse. They see it purely as a way to relax or unwind with their horse. And then you have a smaller 2nd group who understand that it's a great way to work with and train their horse. You can use trail riding to relax 'or' train your horse. The key is to become intentional about which option you choose on any given day when out of the arena. Today, I want to encourage you to begin getting more intentional about your time on the trails with your horse. And to encourage you to see this as an amazing opportunity to build the connection with your horse; regardless of your focus on any specific day... So, let's first look at the benefits you can experience when you include more trail riding into your current training schedule or riding routine. Start being consistent in your riding today with Daily Strides Premium It's always great to get out of the arena, so let's do it today - together! And not just to relax and chill, I want to help you use the energy of being out of the arena to improve the quality of your halt. The halt is a movement that many riders fail to use in their training. And yet it is so versatile and, when ridden well, has so many benefits to the overall training for horse and rider. And of course, being able to stand still while outside of the arena is also really important for both safety and practical reasons... Is there anything as bad as being stuck trying to open or hold a gate? Or waiting for traffic to pass and your horse is refusing to stand still?! This audio horse riding lesson comes straight from Daily Strides Premium. Become consistent in your riding - starting today - with Daily Strides Premium There are a number of things that, when we speak about working with our horses, can feel almost impossible for some riders. This is especially true if your horse is very 'laid-back' or 'lazy'. Other riders are working on channeling energy, etc. and you feel like if you could just ignite a little enthusiasm in your horse, it would be a win! It's always worth remembering that all horses are different. And some will naturally be less enthusiastic than others. However, this does not have to mean that you must give up your hopes and dreams of ever having a willing partner. However, you may need to begin varying your approach or moving the goalposts a little when it comes to your expectations and desired outcomes. Deciding how to proceed forward with a horse who does not seem to have as much enthusiasm or interest will require you to answer this question first:- Is my horse naturally laid back or is he simply ignoring me and being unresponsive? Today, I want to help you begin to decide which of these two is true for your horse - especially if it feels like both of you are going nowhere slowly! Can you remember exactly how this date was last month for you and your horse? What about the month before? Didn't think so... And yet, maybe you're like so many other riders and have a complete aversion to writing things down! Why is that?! I know that I love writing down 'things that have yet to happen'. You know, planning and creating 'to-do' lists. However, when it comes to taking the time to record what actually happened... Not so much! Become more consistent in your riding with Daily Strides Premium There is this lovely place that you will reach with your horse in your training where you are working together. Both of you are invested in creating a desired outcome. This point is usually when you can begin to create and maintain consistent contact. It's like an unwritten agreement between the two of you. And once consistent contact is created and can be maintained for longer periods, you can then begin to think about how that energy will work for both of you from this point… Impulsion is a word that is bandied about a lot when it comes to horses and riding. Many riders, incorrectly, associate it with speed. The faster you're going the more impulsion you're creating. However, this couldn't be further from the truth… And how you influence the channel for this energy is where it all begins… This episode of the Daily Strides Podcast sets up a whole week of 5 lessons titled 'Engaging the Energy in a Correct Channel'. If you would like the rest of the lessons for this training, you can get them inside of Daily Strides Premium.
