Sarah Watkins v. City of St. Louis, Missouri
In collaboration with the University of Auckland, Catherine and Jesse bring us an exciting programme which comprises four-hand piano works and solo performances, ranging from the mid-eighteenth century to the twentieth century. As a duet, they present Mozart's Sonata in D major K.381. Composed in the Galant style, it features elegant melodies, simplicity, and clarity. They will also play Mendelssohn's Andante and Allegro Brillante, salon music graced with polished elegance and craftsmanship. This duet is almost never played in the piano four-hands repertoire - a hidden gem for sure! The concert will also explore solo performances, including Ravel's Ondine, Prokofiev's Piano Sonata No. 7... and more! Catherine and Jesse are both students from the University of Auckland. Jesse is currently under the tutelage of Sarah Watkins and Bryan Sayer, and Catherine is studying under Richard Liu. At the University, Jesse is a recipient of the Kathleen Mary Reardon Memorial Music Scholarship and the Carl and Alberta Rosenfeldt Prize in Chamber Music. Other awards include Llewelyn Jones Prize in Music for Piano (1st Prize) and First at the Sixth Virtuoso International Competition in Korea. Additionally, he is a member of the APO's Aspiring Musicians Program. Aside from piano playing, Jesse is also a passionate violinist and violist. Catherine was awarded Runner-up and Peoples' Choice at the National Young Performer of the Year Award and also 'Best Performance of a NZ work' at the National Piano Competition in 2022. Catherine gave her debut solo recital last year as part of the Lewis Eady Charitable Trust Emerging Artists' Series, and is a current APO Haydn Staples Piano Scholar.

In this duo concert, Polly Sussex and Sarah Watkins present two beautiful and unusual works for cello and piano. The two composers, Ethel Smyth and Melanie Bonis were born in the same year on opposite sides of the English Channel. They were both destined to suffer the poor public profile of female composers in the early twentieth century, regardless of the high quality of their work. Both works show an intimate knowledge of the instruments and are a welcome addition to the repertoire. Today, two established Auckland performers present, for what is thought to be the first time in New Zealand, the first cello sonata of English suffragette Ethel Smyth, and the only cello sonata by the French woman Mel. Bonis. A heartfelt artistic collaboration, The 33, brings together award-winning poet Anne Kennedy and leading New Zealand pianist and Juilliard graduate Sarah Watkins in a tribute to life, grief, writing and music. In 1973, after the death of her brother Philip, the then 14-year-old Kennedy consoled herself lying on a red rug in the family living room listening to Beethoven's Thirty-three Variations on a Theme of Diabelli Opus 120. Now, almost 50 years later, comes the stunning 2020 Ockham NZ Book Award shortlisted collection 'Moth Hour', 33 variations on a poem by Philip. Kennedy reads, interspersed with 16 of the musical variations, in an exquisite hour of words and performance. AUCKLAND WRITERS FESTIVAL WAITUHI O TĀMAKI 2021
Today on Feminine Roadmap we are talking about the gift of self-discovery with life coach Sarah Watkins. As we head into midlife we are often overwhelmed with ideas about health, aging, and fear of the future. In this conversation we flip that mindset and change the dialogue into hope, empowerment and possibility. Sarah shares how experiencing a sudden, life changing autoimmune disorder at 45 years old took her on a journey of healing, self-discovery and renewed purpose. She found herself coming face to face with ideas and limiting beliefs that were not supporting her or helping her live a life that reflected who she wanted to be. Through that experience she found the gift of self-discovery. Sarah began to listen to her own body, to create quality, supportive habits for her mental and physical health. She began to develop a strong relationship with herself, trusting herself and through that living with a renewed sense of purpose. One of the greatest tools she found was to look for ways to create little shifts every day, especially in awareness. Once she began to understand that thoughts create feelings, feelings drive actions and actions then form the life we live, she could make those intentional shifts. If you are feeling that sense of disconnection with yourself and want to find connection again by rediscovering you, join us. Grab a cuppa something wonderful, a good friend and listen to this practical, uplifting and potentially life changing conversation. Please remember to subscribe, rate and share this podcast! Thank you!
Los Angeles-based Sean and Sara Watkins (of GRAMMY®-Award-winning Nickel Creek) share how their musical neighborhood has contracted and expanded over the past year. The brother-sister pair (their album "brother sister" came out in 2020) has taken Watkins Family Hour—their well-loved variety show in residence at Largo for the last 20 years—to Sean’s backyard, where they’ve livestreamed intimate, socially distanced concerts via Patreon. They discuss holding communal space for their Largo family while opening the doors to new friends outside LA and muse on the ways in which lockdown has afforded us a deeper capacity for feeling (are we all crying more?). Finally, they offer a tender reflection on their dear late friend, drummer Don Heffington.

In the darkest hour of our fight against Covid-19, there were glimmers of hope in Clare over the past 24 hours. On Wednesday, the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine was administered to a number of frontline staff at Ennis General Hospital. By the end of the week, it's estimated that around 1,500 staff in the UL Hospitals Group will have received the jab. While, this morning, the first COVID-19 vaccines were administered in a Clare nursing home. The HSE has confirmed that the jab was offered to 22 residents and 49 staff at Regina House Nursing Home, Kilrush, today. On Thursday's Morning Focus, Gavin Grace spoke to Sarah Watkins, advanced nurse practitioner in Acute Medicine at Ennis Hospital who was among the first to receive the vaccine in the hospital and to 87 year-old Sheila Robertson, the first nursing home resident in Clare to be vaccinated. Pianist Sarah Watkins is my guest for this episode. She spoke to me from post-Covid New Zealand, where she's been busy working and performing (remember that foreign concept?) Along with violinist Andrew Beer, she's the winner of the Aotearoa Music Award for her album "11 Frames". We chatted about the state of composition in New Zealand and how multi-culturalism continues to influence New Zealand's musical voices.I've been watching lots of sports matches broadcast with artificially generated crowd noises. If you begin your day with coffee, or end it with a cocktail, you know that plants can pack a punch. Plants have been medicine throughout human history, and even today, many medications are derived from plant compounds. Yet power always includes danger. There are plants in West Texas that can cause sickness, and even death. We can appreciate these plants – even as we exercise caution. Dr. Sarah Watkins is a professor at El Paso’s Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, and a toxicologist with the West Texas Regional Poison Center. “Luckily for us there aren't too many poisonous plants we have to worry about in our area,” Watkins said. As an ER physician here, Watk... Hosted by for KRTS
Come & listen now to Sarah Watkins's story and hear how she escaped a toxic relationship & juggles single parenting to build her spiritual empire!
There's an old saying that everything in Texas either sticks, pricks, stings or bites you. It's an exaggeration, but West Texas is a thorny land, and, from cacti to tarantulas, our region's iconic inhabitants tend to have a certain edge to them. For many, it's part of the region's appeal. Bites and stings from spiders and scorpions generally aren't a serious hazard here. But these creatures can trigger a visceral fear, and we can't help but wonder about them. Dr. Sarah Watkins is a professor at El Paso's Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. From the medical vantage, she's the source on all things creepy-crawly. “I have always been interested in toxicology,” Watkins said. ... Hosted by for KRTS
We are talking to two very brave people, Sarah Watkins and her Father Bart Watkins, that stepped up and their training took over and responded to a situation. So I would like to ask you would you know what to do if a 5-Year-Old Girl Drowns in a pool that you were attending while it was guarded by lifeguards? This is what every parent with children that can or even can't swim needs to know. "Listen to Sarah and her father Bart tell their full story of the events of this day in a public lifeguarded pool with others standing around. It's what you need to know and check what you think you may know how to keep your children safe." I would like to thank our sponsor of this episode Safeswimminglessons.com. If you would like to learn what it will take to teach the little ones to swim and to self-rescue check out their website, The program is closing on March 15th to save 50% on their program. Let me tell you a quick story about a 5-year-old girl who drowned and a daughter and her father that took action. At the time Sarah and her daughter were enjoying swimming in the pool while her father Bart was swimming laps in the indoor pool. Sarah noticed what was happening when she saw the lifeguards just standing around, talking and pointing at the little girl and asked if anyone has checked on her?. Sarah was getting more and more upset at their lack of ability to respond to this situation in the manner that she was trained when she was a lifeguard and an instructor. Then the bottom fell out from under everyone and Sarah knew she had to take action and started to perform CPR, as they just weren't doing it right until she could go on no more. Sarah then ran to get her father, Bart to take over CPR. This meant she couldn't keep going, performing CPR can take a lot out of you after what seemed to be a long time and she just couldn't go on. As you can imagine, this situation was going from bad to worse and becoming a desperate situation but they weren't ready to give up. They had to keep going to save this little girl. She was transported to the hospital where she didn’t survive this drowning even after all they had done. Earlier the girl was wearing a puddle jumper similar to the picture. She had removed this life vest (Puddle Jumper) while her grandfather went to the restroom. She then entered the pool not wearing her puddle jumper. For children of this age group accustomed to wearing these types of PFD's, they do not understand that this is what keeps them afloat. Then we discovered, after this drowning, we had started to ask questions and they were surprised at what we found out. At that point, everything changed for Bart and Sarah! They discovered that this facility was: Unprepared to handle an event like this little 5-year-old girl The rescue equipment was not present or and even their AED machine was locked up in the office That they do not perform the type of training that would prepare them for this. Plus, not to mention that they spent time on their cell phones and talking with one another instead of scanning and watching the patrons in the pool Because what Bart and Sarah had discovered, after this drowning, they had started to ask questions and were surprised at what they found out. After this event, it has energized Bart and Sarah to take action in their community and begin to educate parents and children of the dangers around water and these pools If it was going to happen then they were going to have to get involved in their community that is based in a low-income area, as the education is just not available to the public Sarah started to reach out to others in the water safety and drowning prevention community via social media, plus sharing their story. They both now have begun to hear from so many others that have had similar stories of non-fatal drownings and others that ended up just like this little 5-year-old girl. So Sad Now,

Kim Buie got into the music business through college radio. She's worked in New York, Los Angeles and Nashville at a variety of record companies including some industry giants and some important indie labels. And she's touched a lot of genres, working with artists as diverse as Tom Waits, the Butthole Surfers, Etta James and Richard Thompson. Starting about 15 years ago, she settled into the Americana/roots world as head of A&R for Lost Highway Records, home to Ryan Adams, Lucinda Williams and the historically pivotal O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack. From there she moved on to the multi-faceted music/talent company Thirty Tigers and then to her current home, Americana benchmark label New West, with John Hiatt, Shovels and Rope, Buddy Miller, Sarah Watkins, Nikki Lane and Rodney Crowell. With Crowell, Kim Buie recently made the leap from A&R to producing, helping to shape the sound of his 2017 album Close Ties. Later in the hour, a visit on the go with Nashville roots rock hero Will Hoge as he launches two very different things - an album called Anchors and a new business - a ride service with an all electric fleet and dreams of expanding beyond its successful launch in Nashville.
