This week Aaron and Tracy chat with Patrick Cain of Patrick Cain Designs about his interesting path to becoming a furniture designer, and the business side of being a maker.   LET’S CHAT! You can always call and leave your questions and comments on our voicemail! 978-709-1040   NOTABLE MOMENTS : Patrick attributes his success to having a curiosity and learning. He started mid-century modern and moved into minimalist design. He’s currently working on a brutalist vibe with a little touch of Memphis.  Patrick’s company employs people from every continent.  The shop’s process is super collaborative. Patrick has everyone in the shop give input.  In addition to his main site, Patrick sells his second hand concrete pieces on Etsy, and also at the Rose Bowl Flea Market.  “Do what you like, save what you love as a hobby”.  Patrick looks at selling at the flea market as free A/B testing. He can tell if he’s doing the right thing by who approaches him to hear more. “I believe in open cabinetry because you can’t hide things!” The dogs in Patrick’s photos are from Angel City Pitbulls. If you’re thinking of starting a business, focus on a product that’s safe and then expand.   THINGS TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING FURNITURE: If it’s MDF or particle board it’s not going to hold up. The heavier the better. Look for furniture that is environmentally friendly. Things that are made from new materials are better if they’re going to last 10 years.   ENVIRONMENTAL FOCUS: Patrick uses recycled styrofoam in his concrete pieces. Their team looks for fallen trees and materials that can be reclaimed.    SOME CHALLENGES OF RUNNING A BUSINESS/MOST REWARDING: One of the biggest challenges is, Los Angeles doesn’t make it easy to run a business. Being able to pay yourself is tough- it goes to employees and getting reinvested. Having steady work. Finding employees! Finding reliable people is so difficult. Having a happy customer is really rewarding.  FIND PATRICK: Website | patrickcaindesigns.com The Gram | @patrickcaindesigns Facebook | facebook.com/PatrickCainDesigns Pinterest | pinterest.com/PCD_Furniture   FOLLOW US on Social Media: Website | https://howtohome.com/ Instagram | http://bit.ly/2WqVfSp Twitter | http://bit.ly/2RRyYij Facebook | http://bit.ly/2MC3Hdc Youtube | http://bit.ly/2SifqTH SUBSCRIBE to the How to Home Podcast: Itunes | https://apple.co/2DL0lSp Android | http://bit.ly/2B9k7Fm Stitcher | http://bit.ly/2DM0W6c Spotify | https://spoti.fi/2GcRCKo   THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSOR FILTERBUY.COM

This week Aaron and Tracy chat with Philip Shen about tips for creating a great sleep environment in your home.   LET’S CHAT! You can always call and leave your questions and comments on our voicemail! 978-709-1040   WHY SLEEP IS IMPORTANT: We spend ⅓ of our lives sleeping, so it’s critical for health. The body restores and repairs itself during sleep. Good sleep also supports your memory.   HOW TO CREATE A BETTER ENVIRONMENT: Make sure your room is cool and quiet. Get the proper mattress for your alignment. Block out noise and light. No tv or electronics in the bedroom. The bedroom should be for sleep. Comfortable and soothing colors. Hot showers, massage and warm beverages/hot water (non-caffeinated) are great before bed. Tracy suggested blue light cancelling glasses.    WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A MATTRESS/PILLOW: For youngsters, the mattress requirements aren’t as important- but it’s important they’re cool. Philip recommends mattress protectors for health. 80 percent of the sleeping population are side sleepers, and side sleeping creates the most pressure points. It’s important for side sleepers to get the correct firmness. Philip recommends mattresses with zoning technology. Mattresses should last 8 years. If you have broad shoulders you need a bigger pillow. Body pillows are great for support.  Philip likes the Snuz mattress, specifically the hybrid bed.   SOCIAL QUESTIONS: Q: If you have a cooling mattress and put a mattress protector over it, are you negating the benefits?   A: Yes, but they make cooling mattress protectors as well. Also, with the zipper top mattress protector that’s available, you can actually unzip and clean without buying a mattress protector.      FIND PHILIP: Website | www.sleepchoices.com The Gram | @sleepchoices   FOLLOW US on Social Media: Website | https://howtohome.com/ Instagram | http://bit.ly/2WqVfSp Twitter | http://bit.ly/2RRyYij Facebook | http://bit.ly/2MC3Hdc Youtube | http://bit.ly/2SifqTH SUBSCRIBE to the How to Home Podcast: Itunes | https://apple.co/2DL0lSp Android | http://bit.ly/2B9k7Fm Stitcher | http://bit.ly/2DM0W6c Spotify | https://spoti.fi/2GcRCKo   THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSOR FILTERBUY.COM

Have some very specific categories, but also some more broad ones. - When things are labeled people are more inclined to put things where they belong. - People often pre-shop for product, but Kat recommends taking everything out first and grabbing what you need next. - Have donate bins in your home that you take out regularly. - If you haven’t worn something in a year (and it’s not for a special occasion) let it go! - Keep like seasonal items together in grabbable bins. - Go room by room (no more than 3 spaces at a time). - Clear drawer organizers are great for the bathroom. - Get rid of old makeup and products you no longer use. - To make a deep shelf efficient try not to stack things behind others. Use containers that serve as drawers. Kat recommends the deep Linus bin. Linked below.   TIPS FOR KIDS TOYS: - Kat loves the shoebox bins because they’re clear and kids can see what’s in them. They’re also stackable. - Label everything, but not crazy specific. (For example: “Friends” could be stuffed animals and figurines.) - Have extra labels on hand. - Small pieces and art supplies can be maintained in clear plastic bins as well. - File folders/holder for coloring books (genius!!!).   TIPS FOR THE CAR: - Keep a basket or tote with handles in the car, fill it up and then bring it in every day/set it back by the door. - Have a bin that’s only car toys.   TIPS FOR THE CAR: - Clear everything out, let go of things, map out the system and put everything back in. - Get things off the ground. This week, Aaron and Tracy chat with Tess and Baba of Epic Renewal. We cover composting basics and touch on some common misconceptions people have about the process.   LET’S CHAT! You can always call and leave your questions and comments on our voicemail! 978-709-1040   Composting Facts from Tess and Baba: - The benefits of composting:1. Reducing the gas used by trucks on the road.2. Creates self reliance and jobs.3. Composting creates soil health- it acts as a booster shot to the soil.4. By changing habits in our kitchen and our home we can make a big difference. - You don’t want to compost things that contain pathogens (like meat). There are a ton of resources online for what you can compost and we’ve included them below. - How do you find the right composting method for you? Take into consideration: your space, the speed you want the process to be & the money you’re willing to spend. There are home tumbling composters that take about 2 months, or you can just make a pile outside and eventually it will turn into finished compost. - You can avoid the pests by using closed containers or working to balance your piles right. - Industrial composting can break down pathogens (meat, eggs etc), but home composting can’t. - In a healthy teaspoon of soil there are more microorganisms than there are people on earth, and that works in tandem with our plants to make our earth better.   About Epic Renewal: - They are a curbside composting company in Los Angeles. - Inspired by not being able to compost in their LA neighborhood. - You can do this type of composting (Bokashi) in any size home. - Epic Renewal provides you with a clean container, you fill it with organic waste and they pick it up and compost it. - Containers are airtight and don’t produce a smell (unless you open them).   Changes You Can Make To Create A More Sustainable Lifestyle: - When you’re cooking start scraping scraps into a bowl on the counter to create that habit. Once you’ve created the habit you can start moving scraps to a bin. - Bring to-go coffee containers and straws with you. - Cook at home more, eat out less. - Carpool and/or optimize routes. - Swap out staples with reusable items. - Meal plan. - Think about the meat and produce you buy. - Be patient with yourself. Building habits takes time. - Source from local farmers markets. - Tracy suggests reusing items as art supplies for kids.   Resources: The How & Tips to Get Started - US EPA - NRDC - Find composting options near you: 1. Even if you pick just one, you're making a difference! PHONE CALLS/SOCIAL: Q: What was the turning point in your life that motivated you to start this business? A: Not having access to composting in LA (as renters).   Q: What’s the most exciting development in sustainability you’ve seen recently? A: Package free restaurants. They have containers you return. A lot more companies are also leaning towards more options that don’t require plastic packaging (refill stations etc).   Q: What are tips I can apply to my life to become more sustainable TODAY? Surviving a Remodel | HTH 014

This week, Aaron and Tracy talk about their tips for surviving a remodel. Renovations can be stressful, but with a lot of planning and clear expectations, things will be easier.   LET’S CHAT! You can always call and leave your questions and comments on our voicemail! 978-709-1040   Set expectations: Before you make the decision to start a renovation, talk about your expectations. Who is going to handle what? A lot of time is spent tied to the home while people work- who is going to “babysit” the workers? What are your schedules like? Are you comfortable with giving up A, B and C while the house gets done? What is your timeline? Talk about everything! One thing Tracy and her husband agreed on before they started was not complaining. Also, be very clear about what you want to hire out and what you want to DIY. Have a clear vision of the big picture: This one is HUGE! Before you start ripping anything apart, sit and talk about your vision for your ENTIRE home. It’s so important to get on the same page about the look and feel of your home, so as you pick away at the little things, you both have the same vision for big picture. Know which things you’re willing to let go: Everything is give and take. Know the things you’re willing to bend on, and allow your partner to make those choices. One person cannot control everything. If you can’t agree on something, keep looking: There is no formula for decisions being less frustrating- but if there are things both parties feel strongly about, sometimes the only option is to keep looking until you find something you’re both ok with. Some purchases take time. Pick out the little details at the beginning: We assume the little things like knobs and fixtures can be last priority, right? But by the end of your project you will have made so many big decisions, that the little decisions will make your brain melt. You will want to light the entire hardware section on fire. When you’re sitting down and going over those big picture plans, take note of the little details you like and decide on them then.   Don’t let things snowball: This is HARD! Renovations have a way of getting out of control. You get in a groove and just want to keep going. Make a list of what you’re doing, or create a budget- and stick to it. Inevitably surprise costs will come up- so save any extra cash for those expenses and avoid financial stress.   FOLLOW US on social media: Website | https://howtohome.com/ Instagram | http://bit.ly/2WqVfSp Twitter | http://bit.ly/2RRyYij Facebook | http://bit.ly/2MC3Hdc Youtube | http://bit.ly/2SifqTH SUBSCRIBE to the How to Home Podcast: Itunes | https://apple.co/2DL0lSp Android | http://bit.ly/2B9k7Fm Stitcher | http://bit.ly/2DM0W6c Spotify | https://spoti.fi/2GcRCKo   THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSOR FILTERBUY.COM

This week, we chat with the phenomenally talented, Ben Uyeda. We talk about his incredible undertaking of building a shipping container home in the middle of the Joshua Tree desert, his design process and some of his favorite materials to work with currently.   LET’S CHAT! You can always call and leave your questions and comments on our voicemail! 978-709-1040   FAST FACTS ABOUT BEN (FROM BEN): - Started out as a professor at Cornell University speaking about sustainable design. - Started a design firm called Zero Energy Design- https://zeroenergy.com - Started a tech company called Free Green where he gave away free blueprints with eco friendly housing, and sold advertising on the actual downloadable blueprints, and eventually sold it. - Launched Homemade-Modern.com where he started creating DIY projects.   Show Highlights: - Ben takes a lot of cues from food media. They don’t need a lot of fancy stuff or gadgets, just understanding the elements. - Plywood and concrete are two of Ben’s favorite materials. Concrete because it’s accessible worldwide, plywood because even if it’s not the same globally, people are at least familiar with sheet goods. - If you’re going to buy furniture try to find the cheapest basics and then splurge on the things you’re going to keep forever. - You can have a creative career that’s not dependent on patronage. - You can be more forgiving: Everything doesn’t have to be perfectly flat, people actually like things that look more homemade. - Tracy asked Ben about the future of architecture and he talked about the trends of smaller homes and more urban type living situations like lofts. Open floor plans becoming the norm, building performance, thermal comfort and smart homes are all trending. - Ben doesn’t like analytics but he values them. When looking for new property he searched areas where Whole Foods were popping up.   We Mentioned: The Spiral Staircase Made With CNC- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hd-Z7OTAjJ0 The Bucket Stool- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npPRWDgpduI The Lounge Chair- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QHbp2bwUyA   Ben’s Shipping Container Project: - Ben felt like there was a lot of misinformation about container construction, so he decided to just show the process and enjoy the fun challenge. - He wanted to show the regulation intensive process of building in California. - You might think a container is a great deal, but take into account the labor cost and how intensive each step can be.   Homemade Modern: - Driven by the underserved DIY population of people who wanted to build things in a smaller space with minimal tools. - You can build a ton of stuff with an orbital sander, circular saw and drill.   PHONE CALLS/SOCIAL: Q: How long did it take to cut all of the plywood for spiral staircase? A: It was actually cut with a cnc machine (https://www.inventables.com/technologies/x-carve) , so about 30 hours of cnc time. Q: Is there any difference in insulating a shipping container as opposed to a house? A: Yes and no, the only part that’s really different is if you have to insulate between floor beams. Wood isn’t as conductive of heat as steel is. They insulated between steel beams and then continuous insulation above the plywood and from the metal in. Q: Were you building things and taking things apart when you were young? A: Ben loved the way that making could lead to adventure. He was inspired by Swiss Family Robinson and Huckleberry Finn. Q: Besides permits what was the biggest challenge of building the shipping container? A: Just not having clear answers for the workers on how to do things. They’d ask questions about how to do things and Ben had to research and figure things out as they moved forward. (And holding his temper in the comment section of the videos…) Q: What’s the cheapest place to get a shipping container? A: It depends on where you are. In CA they have to be a one trip condition container. In SoCal it’s https://containersdiscount.ca   Find Ben’s Quickfire video on our Instagram! @howtohome_guide   Ben’s INFO Website | https://www.homemade-modern.com Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/benjaminuyeda Twitter | https://twitter.com/BenUyeda Pinterest | https://www.pinterest.com/BenUyeda/ Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/ben.uyeda Youtube | https://www.youtube.com/HomeMadeModern The Modern Home Project | https://www.youtube.com/themodernhomeproject   FOLLOW US on social media: Website | https://howtohome.com/ Instagram | http://bit.ly/2WqVfSp Twitter | http://bit.ly/2RRyYij Facebook | http://bit.ly/2MC3Hdc Youtube | http://bit.ly/2SifqTH   SUBSCRIBE to the How to Home Podcast: Itunes | https://apple.co/2DL0lSp Android | http://bit.ly/2B9k7Fm Stitcher | http://bit.ly/2DM0W6c Spotify | https://spoti.fi/2GcRCKo   THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSOR FILTERBUY.COM

This week, Aaron and Tracy discuss their go-to list of spring projects. Maintaining your home is key to avoiding costly repairs down the line- and spring is the perfect time to get out and make sure any damage caused over the winter is taken care of.   LET’S CHAT! You can always call and leave your questions and comments on our voicemail! 978-709-1040   1. Replace air filters. - Subscription services like Filterbuy.com are a great way to stay on top of the maintenance. 2. Do a check of the roof, exterior walls and foundation for any weather related damage that occured in the winter months. - Any missing or damaged shingles should be replaced- you should also keep an eye out for leaves or debris that have gotten in under them. This is also the time to take care of any leaks you may have given a quick fix during the rainy season. - On the exterior you want to focus on areas around gutter spouts, or places that take the brunt of weather wear and tear. - For the foundation you’re keeping an eye out for large cracks. If you see anything substantial, consider having foundation specialist come out to make sure it doesn’t need something more than caulk. - Spring is also a great time to insure your windows and doors are sealed. - Also keep an eye out for trees that need to be trimmed near roof/windows. - The driveway is also something good to take a look at and repair/seal. 3.Make a day out of cleaning all of your patio furniture and the grill. - Tracy likes to clean the furniture with ½ cup castile soap, 1 cup vinegar and water. It works really great on pretty much everything and knocks out any mildew. - For the grill she uses vinegar, lemon, salt and foil. 4. Be proactive with lawn maintenance and pruning. - Focus on raking and clean-up, weed control, fertilization and seeding. It’s important to know whether you have warm or cool season grass, because that will affect your fertilization schedule- but either way- spring is about strengthening your lawn for those hot summer months. - Prune your flowers, bushes and trees. 5. Get your vegetables started! - There’s nothing better than throwing fresh veggies on the grill, and using fresh herbs in your cooking. It seems like an overwhelming amount of work, but gardening is so rewarding. - Keep in mind that early spring can still be too cold for a lot of vegetables. Some that do really great planted early are: asparagus, lettuce, peas, rhubarb and spinach. 6. Deep clean your home. - Pickupplease.org allows you to schedule donation pick-ups if you want to purge. It’s also great to schedule the day after a garage sale. - Challenge yourself to swap out for more natural products this year. Not only is it safer for your family, but it also saves a substantial amount of money to make your own cleaning products. You can pretty much do anything with vinegar, water, lemon and tea tree oil. - Aaron’s wife subscribed to a service called: Refill Shoppe - Aaron suggested vinegar and water as carpet cleaner. 7. Have your attic cleaned and insulated (or do it yourself!). - Spring is such a great time to take that leap if you’ve been considering it- then you avoid mold growth in the hot months, and you can also clear out any critters that have snuck in to stay warm. They’ll come in and get it super clean, insulated and also make sure it’s properly ventilated which will prevent so many issues down the line. 8. Start preparing your pool area. - The perimeter and surrounding plants. 9. Drain your water heater. 10. Defrost the freezer.   Make your spring to-do list a family affair- it can be fun!!   FOLLOW US on social media: Website | https://howtohome.com/ Instagram | http://bit.ly/2WqVfSp Twitter | http://bit.ly/2RRyYij Facebook | http://bit.ly/2MC3Hdc Youtube | http://bit.ly/2SifqTH   SUBSCRIBE to the How to Home Podcast: Itunes | https://apple.co/2DL0lSp Android | http://bit.ly/2B9k7Fm Stitcher | http://bit.ly/2DM0W6c Spotify | https://spoti.fi/2GcRCKo   THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSOR FILTERBUY.COM

You can always call and leave your questions and comments on our voicemail! 978-709-1040   FAST FACTS: - Over 56% of homeowners have had a problem with ants in the last year - A single flea can lay up to 25 eggs per day while a single rat can have up to 84 offspring per year - Termites cause an estimated $5 Billion of structural damage per year - Many pests including rats, mice, mosquitoes, fleas and ticks can carry potentially deadly or life-threatening illnesses   TIPS: - 20 percent of household fires are caused by rodents. - Focus on prevention: keep trees and shrubs trimmed and house sealed up. - Expanding foam isn’t Pat’s favorite because pests can chew through it, he suggests an epoxy product. - Keep standing water clean and flowing. Mosquitos love humidity. - Pick up pet food after they’ve eaten. - Be mindful of what you’re planning and what kind of pests they attract. - Cockroaches and rodents love cardboard. - Rats attract other rats. - Use a screen with the proper sized mesh. - Don’t wait until your issue gets huge to call in a professional. - Stains on the seams of a mattress or box spring might indicate bed bugs.   SAFETY: - Stay away using products if you don’t have to. Try cleaning up the area first if you only see a few ants etc. - For a children’s structure like a playhouse a vacuum cleaner is a great tool without using chemicals. Also check on irrigation and shrubs surrounding it. - Don’t put bug sprays into the wrong container (not clearly labeled), and store things in a locked cabinet. - Pat doesn’t recommend keeping unused pesticides sitting around.   DIY TOOLS: - Flashlight - Multi tool to open up cabinet or vent - Sealant for small openings or holes   PHONE CALLS/SOCIAL: Q: Traps aren’t working on my rats, but I’m afraid with poison they’ll die in the walls. This week, Javier Ruiz from New American Funding joins Aaron and Tracy to discuss all you need to know about financing a home remodel. We talk about cost estimation, how to decide the best financing options for you and which rooms will hit your budget the hardest.   LET’S CHAT! You can always call and leave your questions and comments on our voicemail! 978-709-1040   FAST Facts: 1. According to HomeAdvisor, the average kitchen remodel in the US ranges from $12,000 - $30,000 or around $150 per sq. ft 2.To hire a handyman the average cost is $390 ph 3. The average cost of a bathroom remodeling project is approximately $10,000, although this includes minor, partial, and small bathroom remodeling costs. A comprehensive bathroom remodel is likely to cost $15,000 or more; a large master bath remodel can easily go over $50,000. 4. Most people planning a house upgrade aren’t doing it in order to put a “For Sale” sign in the yard. In fact, only seven percent of homeowners are renovating to prepare their homes to be sold, the lowest percentage since 2015. (marketwatch) 5. The majority of homeowners (62 percent) plan to pay for projects, at least in part, by using savings. Other home improvement financing options include credit cards, 30 percent of homeowners say they’ll pay for a project using plastic. While credit cards are also a popular option for millennial homeowners, it is significantly less so than last year, down 16 percent. 6. Payment example: Monthly payments for a $25,000 loan at 7.99% APR with a term of 12 years would result in 144 monthly payments of $270.48. (lightstream) 7. A landscaping project can cost anywhere from $5,000 to over $100,000. When deciding on a budget keep in mind that investing in professional landscaping will greatly add to the value of your home. A general rule of thumb is to spend 10% of your home's value on landscaping.   JAVIERS’S TIPS: - Find out what the value of your home is currently, and what you owe, to get a good idea of what you can get financially. - Cash out refinance option can be a little pricier. - Refinancing is getting a new loan that pays off your existing loan. Pro of refinancing is the liberty to spend the money the way you want.A drawback is rising interest rates. - There’s a Fannie Mae financing option called Home Style- it’s a renovation loan that allows you to use the maximum value of your home to purchase and/or renovate a home. https://www.fanniemae.com/singlefamily/homestyle-renovation Pros: You’re increasing the value of the loan. You can add luxury items. - Home equity line of credit is another option. The rate is a bit higher but gives you the flexibility to access equity in your home. Good for a small project where you can pay it off quickly. - Your most affordable rate will be through a bank or mortgage company vs. a credit card or in-secure line of credit. - Find a trusted loan officer who’s experienced in home loans. - The bank isn’t necessarily the best place to start. Googling “construction loans” or “renovation financing” is a great place to start. - Credit cards have very high interest rates. - If a loan is going to create financial stress, consider splitting your remodel into smaller projects.   TO RECAP OPTIONS - Cash-out refinancing. - Fannie Mae, Homestyle. - Home equity loan - 203k - Unsecured loans - Credit cards - Cash   HOLLER AT JAVIER: Email | Javier.ruiz@nafinc.com Website | https://www.newamericanfunding.com   FOLLOW US on social media: Website | https://howtohome.com/ Instagram | http://bit.ly/2WqVfSp Twitter | http://bit.ly/2RRyYij Facebook | http://bit.ly/2MC3Hdc Youtube | http://bit.ly/2SifqTH   SUBSCRIBE to the How to Home Podcast: Itunes | https://apple.co/2DL0lSp Android | http://bit.ly/2B9k7Fm Stitcher | http://bit.ly/2DM0W6c Spotify | https://spoti.fi/2GcRCKo   THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSOR FILTERBUY.COM

This week, Thyda Sim from Keller Williams Realty joins Aaron and Tracy to discuss whether buying a home is still the best option in the current market. We find out whether you really need to save a 20% downpayment, if renting is just throwing your money away, and what additional costs you should consider before deciding to buy.   LET’S CHAT! You can always call and leave your questions and comments on our voicemail! 978-709-1040   FAST Facts: 1. According to Realtor.com the average US Homeowner is 55 years old. 2. According to Zillow: In 1980, the median price of a home in the US was $47,200 and has risen to over $200,000 in 2018 while the median rental price for a home in the US is $1,650/month 3. According to Zillow the average home value in the US has risen over 7% in the past year. 4. According to Experian, the average mortgage debt in the US for 2016 was nearly $200,000   THYDA’S TIPS: - If you’re renting you’re paying someone else’s mortgage. Look at owning a home as your retirement plan. - Needing 20 percent down is a misconception. There are tons of programs that can get that way down, speak to a lender and/or agent. - It’s attractive to make a clean offer or offer to cover some closing costs. - Writing a personal letter to the seller is a great way to get noticed. - Best time of year to home shop is the Fall/Winter months.   TOP TIPS FOR BUYING A HOME: - Take a deep look at your finances - How long are you going to be there? - Find a really great agent - Location! You can change your home but you can’t change your location. Do your research.   THE PROCESS: - Speak to a lender to look at your finances and get a preapproval letter. - Find the right house and put in an offer. - Open escrow - Close escrow, sign loan paperwork, sign title and you’re set! (She makes it sound easy, huh?)   AARON MENTIONED: - Have your pre-approval letter adjusted to a price you feel comfortable (if too high). TRACY MENTIONED: - She accidentally referred to this documentary as “Minimalist”, but it’s actually “Minimalism”- https://minimalismfilm.com   VOICEMAIL QUESTIONS: Q: What are the first steps for financing your home? We discuss how to pick the best professional for the job, why permits are often necessary and how to find out if you’ll need one for your home project! LET’S CHAT! You can always call and leave your questions and comments on our voicemail! 978-709-1040   TIPS FROM RICKY: - Visit your city’s website or call Building and Safety to find out if the project you want to do requires permitting. You can also pull records there. - Anything is doable structurally it just depends on your budget. - Once you submit plans to the city you can make changes, but they have to be approved. Tracy suggests having a clear vision and asking lots of questions before submitting plans to the city. - Talk with contractor about costs before submitting plans. - Open up walls or check in crawl space/attic to find out if your walls are load-bearing. - Your contractor will arrange the inspection and make sure it matches the plans. If you have something unrelated that’s unpermitted they may catch it in their walk through. - Cost range depends on the scope of the work. Ryan Kadoi joins Aaron and Tracy this week to share his top home security tips. We discuss the best cameras, sensors and smart home security systems - as well as simple & affordable DIY methods to keep your property safe from intruders!   LET'S CHAT! You can always call and leave your questions and comments on our voicemail! 978-709-1040   PREVENTION TIPS: - Know your neighbors. Be aware of surroundings. NextDoor is a great way to keep an eye on the happenings in your neighborhood. - Be aware of your social media presence. Are you checking in at places and posting pics of yourself away from your home? Are you showcasing entry points in your home? Avoid unboxing videos. - Watch what you’re throwing in the mail. Shred mail and breakdown boxes. - Cameras (fake ones are better than nothing!) - Purchase floodlights - Install camera doorbells - Signage that your house is monitored is great. - Dogs are a great deterrent! - Get locked mailboxes - Place security at all entry points including second level.   EXTRA TIPS: - Smart locks/technology can be hacked, it’s best to have a mix of smart technology and key locks. - Amazon has a great variety of security products. - Keep your homeowners insurance up to date. - Engrave ID numbers onto valuables.   WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO FORK OUT ON SECURITY: Although this is a wide range depending on your needs, typically you can get something from $99-$300.   AARON MENTIONED: Kuna Security- https://getkuna.com   TRACY MENTIONED: ADT- https://www.adt.com Ring- https://shop.ring.com/collections/security-cams Arlo- https://www.arlo.com/en-us/   RYAN MENTIONED: Samsung Smart Things - https://www.smartthings.com Z Wave - https://www.z-wave.com Window Sensors - https://amzn.to/2GNk8T9   RYAN’S TOP 5 DIY HOME SECURITY PRODUCTS (in his words): 1.Smart DoorBell - Ring is my current doorbell of choice but Nest's bell is good as wellhttps://amzn.to/2X7NKQUhttps://nest.com/doorbell/nest-hello/overview/ 2.Blink Cameras - Love these cameras. Battery operated, easy to set up, can purchase both exterior and interior camerashttps://amzn.to/2BF5Pg53.Aeotec Door/Window Sensors - a bit pricey but integrates well with a smart-hub such as Samsung's Smartthings which is listed belowhttps://amzn.to/2DMpXgA4.Wyze Cam - I wouldn't normally recommend two different types of cameras, but for those on a budget these $20.00 cams pack a ton of functionality...https://amzn.to/2X9QPA25.Smart Things - Not exactly a home security product, but it integrates well with security products and ties in home automation into one platform such as lights, locks, etc and is my current smarthub of choicehttps://www.smartthings.com/   AUDIENCE QUESTIONS WIRED VS. WIRELESS? Wiring can be tricky but it’s more stable and recommended by Ryan. Wireless is dependant on charging, but easier to install. Tracy mentioned that her outdoor cameras also offer a solar option. IS THERE A SMARTLOCK YOU RECOMMEND? Ryan isn’t a big fan, because there’s the possibility of it being hacked. He recommends a traditional lock and key, even though it doesn’t have the convenience factor.   FOLLOW US on social media: Website | https://howtohome.com/ Instagram | http://bit.ly/2WqVfSp Twitter | http://bit.ly/2RRyYij Facebook | http://bit.ly/2MC3Hdc Youtube | http://bit.ly/2SifqTH   SUBSCRIBE to the How to Home Podcast: Itunes | https://apple.co/2DL0lSp Android | http://bit.ly/2B9k7Fm Stitcher | http://bit.ly/2DM0W6c Spotify | https://spoti.fi/2GcRCKo   THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSOR FILTERBUY.COM

Talking Tile: Top DIY Tips for Your Next Tiling Project - HTH 004

Adam Esparza of Ale Tile joins Aaron and Tracy this week to talk all things tile! Adam shares his winning formulas, top tips and insider knowledge to help make your next tiling project a breeze. LET’S CHAT! You can always call and leave your questions and comments on our voicemail! 978-709-1040 THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSOR FILTERBUY.COM! MOST COMMON DIY MISTAKE ACCORDING TO ADAM: Not figuring out layout TRENDY TILES THAT AREN’T PRACTICAL: Cement tiles are high maintenance (require sealing), consider the same look in a porcelain tile. TIPS: Asses foundation before deciding on your base flooring products. Large format tiles help hide difficult flooring areas. Choosing a cement base as opposed to Kerdi board is a more durable and affordable option, in Adam’s opinion. To deal with different levels of flooring (wood that transitions into tile etc.), the new mats filled with thin set are a great option. Adam urges you to get creative and use a threshold or a T molding if necessary. You really need to back butter plank tiles because they have a natural bow. Always figure out your layout, pick the right tile for the job and start small when you’re learning! Try not to cut corners- be patient. As your learning Adam suggests using the same color grout as the tile. HARD-WOOD VS. HARD-WOOD STYLE TILES Wood gives the warm feeling Tile is more durable (great if you’re considering renting down the line) Heated mats for under the tile are an option Grout maintenance (Adam recommends a thin grout line close in color to the tile) ADAM’S WINNING FORMULAS: WALL MUD:1 shovel cement + 1 shovel lime to 4 shovels of sand. FLOOR: 1 shovel cement to 4-5 shovels of sand.   TILE ON A BUDGET: Do something classic that doesn’t go out of style like subway tile. Big box stores will always be cheaper   KITCHEN GROUT MAINTENANCE: Epoxy grout is great for backsplash. It doesn’t stain or crack. Adam recommends this company- https://laticrete.com   SANDED GROUT VS. NON-SANDED: Non-sanded grout is for grout joints less than 1/8th of an inch. Sanded is for anything larger.   QUICK TILE RUN-DOWN: Porcelain works anywhere and can take a beating. Ceramic is common in showers because of the glaze- it can also chip easily, so it’s better in lighter traffic areas. Glass is great for backsplashes Cement tiles stain easy and require a lot of maintenance- but look great! Marble and stone ages, and requires a lot of maintenance as well.   DIY MUST HAVES: Wet Saw A scouring cutter Trowel Mortar mixer   PHONE CALLS: Q: Is Red Gard necessary?A: It’s a great sense of insurance for crack prevention. Adam highly recommends Laticrete Hydro Ban as well. More expensive but an amazing product.https://laticrete.com/en/tile-and-stoneinstallation/waterproofing/hydro-ban   Q: I’m going to tile my tub surround, how do I keep the bottom row from falling off?A: Adam leaves the first row out and then you can put a piece of stick or a straight edge to create a line to stack on. Once it’s hard the next day you can cut in the first row.   Q: We had a hard time pulling out the “plus sign” spacers. Is there a better product?A: Adam suggests leave in spacers that become part of the thin set, or you can just make sure they’re not protruding and don’t get thin set on them. Push them all the way in. Aaron suggests the horse-shoe shaped ones and the self leveling ones.   ADAM’S INFO Website | aletile.comThe Gram | https://www.instagram.com/aletile FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA: Website | https://howtohome.com/ Instagram | http://bit.ly/2WqVfSp Twitter | http://bit.ly/2RRyYij Facebook | http://bit.ly/2MC3Hdc Youtube | http://bit.ly/2SifqTH SUBSCRIBE to the How to Home Podcast: Itunes | https://apple.co/2DL0lSp Android | http://bit.ly/2B9k7Fm Stitcher | http://bit.ly/2DM0W6c Spotify | https://spoti.fi/2GcRCKo
